Miesha Tate is going up against Holly Holm tonight in Las Vegas for UFC Fight Night 196 — and it’s Holly’s first match since her spectacular upset against Ronda Rousey to win the Women’s Bantamweight Championship title last year. That makes this match a very big deal. Miesha is kind of the underdog, having already lost a title match against Ronda. Holly still seems to have the right mindset. She’s already said that she doesn’t want to be a fluke champion. “I mean,” said Holly, “I don’t want to be a one-hit wonder. A lot of people are wondering ‘what’s really going to happen now after that kind of a victory?'”

Miesha is also probably disappointed that she isn’t getting a rematch against Ronda — and she’ll also screw up some big money deals if she takes the title away from Holly. A lot of UFC executives are already counting the money they’ll make from a Holms/Rousey rematch.

Don’t believe the hype about bro types being all angry about the new Ghostbusters trailer because they’re all sexists ‘n stuff. In fact, we’re feeling more like Social Justice Warriors at the sight of Leslie Jones — who’s regularly reduced to playing stereotypes on Saturday Night Live — stuck as the sole non-scientist in a trailer that offers absolutely no laughs. (“You guys are really smart about this science stuff,” she declares to her costars.) It’s kind of fun to see Kate McKinnon playing a take on Egon as seen in the Ghostbusters cartoons, but it looks like she believes playing heterosexual means faking an oral obsession. Well, we think her character’s heterosexual. We don’t really care after our first look at this reboot/remake/reimagining…

Nina

Zoe Saldana is getting her own heat in the wake of this trailer for her turn as legendary sultry jazz figure Nina Simone in this biopic — because it looks like the ethnic actress used blackface of sorts to play Nina. Blackface is bad, folks. So is a prosthetic nose. It seems the Dominican actress isn’t quite ethnic enough to make people happy in this movie — which also stars David Oyelowo and Mike Epps. Hopefully, they’re black enough to pass muster…..

Confirmation

Well, here’s one movie that won’t spark any protests. HBO snuck out the first trailer to their film about the Clarence Thomas hearings for his Supreme Court position — with Kerry Washington as Anita Hill, who claims to be the only woman that Thomas ever sexually harassed. We’re not expecting a lot of nuance here. Maybe we’ll get to see how Ted Kennedy was embarrassed into sitting out the hearings, though. We’re also looking forward to Greg Kinnear as a young(ish) Joe Biden…

And this one’s kind of a cheat, since Taboo is really a series coming up on FX that’s set in 1814, and follows Tom Hardy as a prodigal son who returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father’s shipping empire. UFC 196: McGregor vs. Diaz is a mixed martial arts event that will be held on March 5, 2016 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event was originally expected to take place at in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On December 29, UFC announced that the event was canceled and would be moved to a different location. On January 12, it was confirmed the event will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.  A UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship bout between champion Holly Holm and former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate is expected to co-headline the event

The event was expected to be headlined by a UFC Lightweight Championship bout between champion Rafael dos Anjos and UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor. This would have been the second time in UFC history that champions in different divisions would fight for a title.

On February 23, the planned bout suffered a setback as it was announced that Dos Anjos pulled out due to a broken foot. Former featherweight champion José Aldo declined the initial opportunity to replace him due to “lack of time” to prepare for the bout. Former lightweight champion and top featherweight contender Frankie Edgar also declined the opportunity due to a groin injury. Eventually, The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner and former lightweight title challenger Nate Diaz was announced as the replacement and the bout will take place in the welterweight division.

Zoe Saldana is in the news for starring in Nina — a Nina Simone biopic where nobody’s getting credit for making a movie about an important African-American figure in modern music. Instead, Zoe’s getting crap for signing on to play the role despite not being dark enough as a Dominican actress. Also, the first trailer for Nina reveals that Zoe’s wearing a prosthetic nose, which doesn’t seem to be nearly as popular as when Nicole Kidman did the same for The Hours.

We were fans back in 2003, though, thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. We’ve even been waiting a decade for the long-shelved Temptation to finally get a release. And did you check out Zoe as the lesbian love interest of Mila Kunis in 2007’s After Sex? We did. A lot.

Miesha Tate managed a stunning win at UFC Fight Night 196 last night as she won the Women’s Bantamweight Championship by choking out Holly Holm in a fifth-round submission. That was kind of a lucky break, too. Until the dramatic hold finally happened, Miesha and Holly were heading for the judges to call the match as a draw.

Even that would’ve been a win for Miesha, though. She was already considered an underdog for having lost to fan favorite Ronda Rousey — who Holly beat in a dramatic win last year. We (or, you know, other people) weren’t the only suckers losing money on this match last night. UFC was really looking forward to cashing in with a Ronda/Holly rematch.

But another battle between Miesha and Holly should work out for the UFC, too. A lot of fight fans are ready to watch that epic brawl. Sadly, Holly now (unfairly) looks like a Buster Douglas type in the world of UFC. We still wouldn’t get into the ring with her.

Anyway, here’s the big finish. At this point, it’s just nice to see a Women’s Bantamweight Championship UFC fight that goes on for more than two rounds. Be sure to admire Miesha’s dedication to keeping that choke hold going, too. She knew that was her last shot…

It has been a long and storied career for Peyton Manning. After 18 season and five MVP awards, it appears that the time has come for Manning to take his talents outside of the sport. Sources told ESPN’s Sunday morning that Manning will announce his retirement on Monday morning at the Denver Broncos’ headquarters. It will end Manning’s career on a very high note after winning Super Bowl 50 in February over the Carolina Panthers.

Manning will retire as the NFL’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns with 539, passing yards with 71,940 and will be tied with Brett Favre in quarterback wins with 186. Manning played his first 14 years in the league with the Indianapolis Colts after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft but was cut by the team after the 2011 season which he missed because of spinal fusion surgery. Manning would then take his talents out west to Denver where he would lead the team to two Super Bowl appearances in four years including this past year’s Super Bowl title.

Manning probably has a nice career ahead of him in the broadcast booth with his outgoing personality. Right now, fans around the NFL will wait and see what he has to say about leaving the game that he has carried from the quarterback position for nearly two decades. He has made a ton of money in the process as well and that money will serve him well moving forward into his next career venture outside of being the Papa John’s spokesperson.

Jonah Hill hosted Saturday Night Live last night — and we came really close to finally giving up and saying that there was no SNL Highlight last night. There have been a few times where we’ve had to concede that a predictable sketch got lots of buzz, but that clearly wasn’t going to happen with Jonah Hill. Most of the show (with the writers coming off a long break, even) consisted of tired political gags that made it seem like the writing staff is still terrified of being blacklisted over Donald Trump hosting last year.

Also, The Weeknd made a surprise appearance. That was pretty cool. We especially liked seeing the guy rocking some mink coats. That’s the most politically-incorrect thing that SNL has tried in decades. Except for a pre-taped bit called “The Champ,” which easily stole the show. Jonah, who can still get away with playing a high-school kid, starred in a great short film that goofs on all these feel-good “let-the-school-mascot-score-a-point” news stories. It’s some really solid comedy. No idea how it made it onto this show…

Former first lady Nancy Reagan is dead at the age of 94, and the fine journalists at Washington, D.C.’s Channel 4 had to scramble to get a picture because everyone obviously thought that the former First Lady would live for a few more decades. The picture above is what they managed to finally post on Twitter. And, yes, those are wax figures.

To be fair, it’s notoriously hard to find photographs of former President Ronald Reagan and his wife. They were in the White House between 1980 and 1988, when primitive tintype photography made it difficult to preserve images. Things like Official White House Portraits didn’t exist until 1992, when Bill Clinton was elected and everyone decided that the press corps would really like some nice photographs of the President and First Lady.

In defense of Channel 4, that really is a pretty good likeness of Nancy Reagan. This is also still better than all the idiots on Facebook who think they’re being clever with variations on “Nancy Reagan Just Said No To Life!”

Dominique McElligot is one of the newest characters in House of Cards Season 4 available on only Netflix. Dominique plays Hannah Conway, the beautiful wife of William Conway and First Lady of New York. In our opinion, she’s just one of a million reasons that House of Cards is the most binge-worthy show on television today.

Without ruining anything in the show, its a testament to Hannah’s character that we wouldn’t mind seeing her as First Lady of the United States. Obviously we’re partial to Claire, but still…

Texas Tech Men’s Basketball player Toddrick Gotcher surprised his girlfriend, Kelly McQuaid, by proposing to her after their win over Kansas State on Senior Night.

Kelly, a Red Raider Cross Country runner herself, seemingly had no idea what was going on when Toddrick grabbed the microphone to talk to those in attendance. At first Toddrick thanked the fans for acting as “a village” to raise him as “a child” but then he told everyone that he had a question to ask his beautiful girlfriend.

That’s when he got down on one and proposed. Of course, she said yes.

Victoria McGrath, a student at Northeastern University in Boston, died in a car crash overseas along with her fellow student Priscilla Perez Torres. If Victoria’s name sounds familiar to you, that’s because she was a victim of the Boston Marathon Bombing whose photo was one of the most iconic images of the tragedy.

Prior to the accident, Victoria had been an intern at Goldman Sachs as a Private Wealth Management Analyst.

“Northeastern University has confirmed that two undergraduate students have been tragically killed in a car accident overseas,” the university said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Victoria McGrath and Priscilla Perez Torres in this extremely difficult time.” Other than the fact that the car crash happened in Dubai, not much more information about the accident is known at this time.

Our hearts go out to both Victoria and Priscilla’s families in this time of sorrow and tragedy.

Who Is Victoria McGrath?

Victoria is from Weston, Connecticut. The oldest of three siblings (two brothers), Victoria was smart enough to make it into Northeastern University, a fantastic school in Boston. There she double majored in Finance and International Affairs. But things took a slight turn for the worst on April 15, 2013 when she became one of 170 victims of the Boston Marathon Bombing.

Victoria was a student at Northeastern University who had interned at Goldman Sachs as a Private Wealth Management Analyst last semester (a job we can only assume is much more difficult than during the summer considering the fact she had classwork).

While Victoria was spectating the Boston Marathon, she was standing just five feet from where the bomb went off. Her leg was wounded by the homemade pipe bomb’s shrapnel. Bleeding profusely, she was carried to safety by Boston Fireman Jimmy Plourde, who had also wrapped her leg in a tourniquet. Considering that the shrapnel had hit her artery, that decision to put Victoria in a tourniquet saved her life.

Here’s the scene from CTPost.com, that describes how Jimmy took over care for Victoria:

“There was a guy with a young girl [Victoria], and he’s like, `you’ve got to help her,’ and he just started putting the tourniquet on and I said, `you got to get out of here,’ and he said `you got to take her out.’ And I said `I got this,’ and I tied the tourniquet on. And there was a woman and I said `you gotta leave,’ and she’s like, `this is my daughter, I’m not going anywhere,'” Plourde told News 10.com, an Albany television station.

Once she was taken into a medical tent, Victoria continued to be frantic. That’s when Tyler Dodd, a medic within the tent, lied and told Victoria he was a veteran who had served in Afghanistan. Dodd remembers telling Victoria that he had suffered a leg injury just like his and that she’d be fine after the surgery. That was a lie, Dodd had never served, but nonetheless Victoria was happy to hear that.

Dubai Car Crash

There aren’t any known details as to what Victoria and her fellow Northeastern student were in Dubai, but the University did say that the two were on a personal trip and not studying. Unfortunately we don’t have any other details as to the car crash itself, but GulfNews did report that there was a multi-vehicle crash that killed 18 people.

As a result of completing this course, students will be able to:

Vaguely remember what went on during the week that they were away, only to find outrageous photos of drunken debauchery on their phone a week later while bored in class.

Impress their friends with stories of how much they drank in a day, and how many people they were able to hook up within the week. Most of it will likely be false, but it won’t stop them from making it sound like the craziest spring break ever.

Get some color and come back to campus tanned or burned, instead of looking like the pale ghosts that have been floating around college campuses since November.

Create lasting memories with friends, some of which will be shared and some which will remain between those who were there to experience them. What happens on spring break stays on spring break, right?

Grades:

This course is run on a pass-fail basis. By taking part and completing the course, all enrolled students will have gained valuable experience that can only benefit them in the future. If you feel that this is not the case after completion of the course, please inform your friends that they let you down, as this should be the best course of the year.

Prerequisites:

This is a beginner’s course, but students must have completed the following:

Book a trip somewhere. If you are only doing this now, you are definitely late to the game, but it’s still possible.
Buy the essentials. This means bathing suits, sunglasses, sunscreen, dizzy bats, funnels, etc. You’re going to want to be prepared with all this stuff before going. No doubt the prices for these essential items will be horrendously high wherever you go because shops love taking advantage of drunken college kids just trying to enjoy spring break.

Look for and book activities for the week. Buying tickets to shows, booze cruises, and beach parties will be cheaper if you buy them in advance. It’ll also allow you to plan out your week, which will reduce any indecision you have about what to do each day.

Last but not least, know your limits! Pretty essential to having the most amount of fun, as no one wants you to end up in the emergency room during this week.

Wake up ridiculously early because no doubt you’ve booked the earliest flight out, not only because it’s the cheapest option, but also because it means you have a reason to start drinking at an unreasonable hour of the morning.
Arrive at your destination and take in your surroundings, so that you know exactly which way to stumble home early the next morning.
Commence in the festivities of spring break by breaking out that new swimsuit, forgetting to put on sunscreen, and drinking some sort of brightly colored, alcoholic punch for the rest of the day.

Day 2:
Wake up and immediately regret not putting on sunscreen, so you guilt trip your friend into applying extra to soothe the pain.
Spend the day on the beach or around the pool, getting lit and meeting new people. This will include guys who have been in the gym since spring break 2015, girls who are looking to let loose for a few days, and strange older people who booked a holiday without realizing what they were getting themselves into.
Discuss what the plan is for that night over some rubbery calamari that the hotel/restaurant you have made your first choice eating spot undoubtedly sells.

Day 3:
Hunt for water, because you’ve woken up and you feel like you’ve made out with a vacuum and lost all the moisture in your mouth.
Spend the day on the booze cruise you booked prior to coming, and be unsure whether the boat’s rocking from waves or you’re swaying because of the amount you’ve drank. Find a significant other for the entirety of the cruise, only to forget their name and number after disembarking.
Nap/Pass out.
Rally, and force some drinks down you before heading to the bars to find the person you were getting intimate with on the cruise. You don’t find them, so you grab a few drinks and dance until you drop.

Day 4:
It’s your last day. You wake up early as to make the most of the daily paradise that is spring break. This will include taking one last dip in the ocean, one last game of beach volleyball, and one last tequila shot before 11am.
At this point your body is in a constant state of ambiguity, not knowing whether it’s intoxicated or not. Some may think this is a bad thing, but these people would be wrong, as it allows you to power through all day until it’s time to head out.
You hit your favorite bars one last time, in the hope of making the night one for the record books. However, this is when the alcohol decides to take affect, and the last thing you remember is expressing your undying love for someone you’ve just met.

Day 5:
Scramble to pack your bag because the bus to the airport leaves in 5 minutes and you’ve just woken up.
Take one last glace out of the bus window at the locations where all the memories have been made and forgotten over the past few days.
Sit in the airport wishing that you hadn’t drank that third fishbowl last night, as your head feels like it’s about to explode and no amount of Advil and water can help.
Get home, get into bed, and sleep off your hangover until classes start back up on Monday.

Expectations for Class:

By taking part in this course, you will be expected to have a blast, make some decisions that you will most likely regret, and create some memories that you’ll never forget. Importantly, you must be safe in everything you do, but this shouldn’t stop you from having the best week of your life. SPRING BREAK 2016!

Elizabeth Garrett, the President of Cornell University, has died after taking over the position just under one year ago. Elizabeth died today at Weill Cornell Hospital while she was undergoing treatment for colon cancer. She was Cornell’s thirteenth President and the school’s first female President.

Elizabeth Garrett, Cornell University’s first female president, died this morning at Weill Cornell Hospital. Elizabeth was undergoing treatment for colon cancer, something that she had announced back in September. Using her words, it was an “aggressive treatment plan,” according to the Cornell Sun. There’s a chance that her death resulted in complications following the treatment.

She had served as President for less than a year when she died. She was only 52.

Elizabeth’s Work Before Cornell

Prior to Elizabeth’s inauguration at Cornell, she had worked at the University of Southern California. There she oversaw USC’s Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences as well as the Keck School of Medicine of USC and 16 other professional schools, according to the USC.

Even before that, Elizabeth had been apointed by George W. Bush to serve on an Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform.

School’s Response

Dear Cornell Community,

It is with utmost sadness that I write to inform you that our president, colleague and friend, Elizabeth Garrett, passed away late last evening after a brave battle with colon cancer. There are few words to express the enormity of this loss.

Beth was simply a remarkable human being — a vibrant and passionate leader who devoted her life to the pursuit of knowledge and public service and had a profound, positive impact on the many lives that she touched. In this regard, she was the quintessential Cornellian. From the moment I met her during the presidential search, it was clear to me that she had the intellect, energy and vision not only to lead Cornell, but to be one of the greatest presidents in our 150-year history. While Beth’s tenure as president has tragically been cut short, her efforts over the last eight months have set the university on a path toward continued excellence. She will leave a lasting legacy on our beloved institution and will be terribly missed.

We will honor Beth’s memory with a moment of silence, followed by chimes, this afternoon at 4:00pm EST. I invite you to mark this moment either by yourself or with colleagues and friends. Plans will soon be made for a memorial gathering on the Ithaca campus in the near future. We will share details as soon as they are available.

As summer gets close you will notice more and more summer beers hitting the shelves. These beers will be lower in ABV, so you can drink all day, and packed with citrusy flavors. The style of beer that is on tap for this weekend is one that is growing in popularity and one that is perfect for the summer. This weekend Leinenkugel Brewing Company’s Summer Shady is What’s on Tap!

A shady is a very popular style of beer, especially in Europe, that is mixed with another type of soft drink, think soda, or even juice. Typically the “base beer” is a wheat beer or, as the Germans call it, weiss beer and then the juice is added. This style and drink is rapidly growing in the US thanks to Jacob Leinenkugel’s line of Shandies. Brewed with natural lemonade Summer Shandy is becoming a staple for Leinenkugel; undoubtedly you have seen someone drinking one at a tailgate, pool, or on the beach.

The trick to a shandy is maintaining the beer / juice balance. With Summer Shandy the lemon that is dominates in the aroma is balanced nicely within the beer’s wheaty flavor. It also can be difficult to manage and balance the tartness of the citrus, which if not done properly will turn drinkers away. As you drink this Shandy you will get some, very little, hoppy and earthy flavor which is off-set nicely by the shandy’s finishing malty sweetness. Throughout each sip you will notice a subtle sweetness, I get a lot of honey, to balance the natural lemon juice.

Anyone who lives in the tri-state area knows that Hoboken knows how to throw down for a crazy party. So who’s really that surprised to learn that the city can’t even wait for the real St. Patrick’s Day before they throw their annual LepraCon Bar Crawl?

For those of you who don’t know, this is an all-day event that puts the word “out of control to shame.” Despite heavy police presence and security, residents and visitors tend to get crunker than a mug. NJ.com reports that “arrests this year increased by four over 2015, and [Police Chief] Ferrante specifically cited the arrest of a former college football player for allegedly breaking a city officer’s ribs and dislocating another’s shoulder.”
