Phubbing is Ruining Your Relationships/Vocabulary, According to New Study

Phubbing Study
According to a new study, phubbing (which we’ve never even heard about until right now), is ruining all of our relationships. Soooo, that sucks.

For those of you who have a legitimate vocabulary/don’t frequent Urban Dictionary, phubbing is “snubbing someone in favor of your mobile phone. We’ve all done it: when a conversation gets boring, the urge to check out an interesting person’s twitter/ Facebook/ Youtube/ Pinterest/whatever feed can be overwhelming.”

You’re right Urban Dictionary person, we have all done it, and we’re not proud of it. But sometimes checking out your newsfeed at an astronomical rate is way more interesting than listening to your friend’s latest breakup. Right? Am I right?!

According to Baylor University, it doesn’t matter either way – it’s hurting the person sitting across from you.

Researchers found that more than 45 percent of people reported being phubbed by their partner, and more than 20 percent of people reported that it caused problems in their relationship.

They also found that 37 percent of people said they felt depressed at least some of the time (which researchers seem to believe is brought on by phubbing), and only 32 percent of people said they were satisfied with their relationship.

So basically, technology is ruining our lives. What are we going to do about it?!

Hold that thought, gotta go check my Instagram likes.

Listen Will Smith Fiesta
After ten long years of no one really caring or remembering the glory days of the ’90s, Will Smith has put out a new song. And to be honest, it’s kind of great.

The Fresh Prince/Big Willy Style/Agent J teamed up with Bomba Estéreo to remix their Grammy-nominated song “Fiesta,” and it’s a pretty sweet beat. But the best part is that Smith is singing in both English and Spanish, and let me tell you – the accent is on point.

But don’t let that stop you from skipping around and checking out the album which we’ve embedded via Spotify below. And if you like it? Hey, download Stories on iTunes here.

College Cheerleader of the Week: Peyton Mabry from Texas Christian University

With college football in full swing, we’re celebrating one of the most important factors of the game – the cheerleaders. Each week we’ll introduce you to a new collegiate cheerleader to get your head in the game.

This week, meet Peyton from Texas Christian University – a sophomore cheerleader majoring in Strategic Communications, and originally from Frisco, Texas. Get to know her a bit better below.

• How did you choose your school?
I chose TCU for several reasons, first of those being that I fell in love with the campus as soon as I saw it! TCU is considered a smaller private University, so the academic rigors are challenging, the professors are accessible and want to help their students, and the class sizes are smaller which is perfect for me. I also like that it’s only an hour away from home so I am still close to my family. Lastly, the cheer program was a big factor for me when making my decision of where to attend college. The TCU Spirit program and coaches made me feel at home immediately, and I love that TCU spirit focuses on “game day” and supporting all of TCU’s sports, events and traditions.

• Was it easy to adjust to cheering in college?
It’s been a big, but extremely exciting, transition and adjustment for me. I consider cheering at TCU one of the biggest privileges I’ve ever been blessed with.

• Which game are you most excited for this year?
Probably TCU vs. Baylor! It will be our last regular season game and best of all it’s a home game at TCU. We’re huge rivals so it’s always a highly anticipated game!

• How busy does cheerleading keep you?
Cheerleading has always kept me very busy and still does in college! I was a competitive cheerleader for 12 years at Cheer Athletics, 4 of those being on CA’s senior large coed level 5 Worlds team, Cheetahs. The TCU Cheer squads practice 4+ hours per week in addition to supporting all of the athletics programs, charity events and making personal appearances. So yes while it does keep me busy, I wouldn’t have it any other way and I’m thankful for every second of it!

• Are you involved in any extracurricular activities besides cheerleading?
I am a new member of the TCU chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha and am also looking into the different Christian organizations offered on campus to find the best one for me!

Tally Sepot

This past weekend, a tragedy hit the sisters of PSU’s Alpha Chi Omega when Tally Sepot, a sophomore, died in a car accident coming back from a Penn State charity event for children with cancer. Apparently the driver lost control of the car when it flipped and Tally got ejected from the vehicle. She died instantly.

In her honor, alumni of PSU Alpha Chi Omega started a GoFundMe in hopes to raise $1,000 for her family and friends. Not even a week later, $38,749 was collected for Tally.

Penn State Rush 2015: What It's Like To Rush A Sorority

On Wednesday the 30th, Alpha Chi Omega had a candle vigil celebrating the life of Tally, inviting any students who wanted to join. A Penn State a Capella group sang in her honor and a few of Tally’s closest friends spoke on her behalf. Almost 3,000 students showed on the cramped Old Main lawn.

On the day that Tally passed, it was only fitting that there was a lunar eclipse.

Friends and family have expressed that Tally was like the sun, illuminating all of our universes with her bright smile and bubbly personality. Even though gone, she will continue to light the way for the people who now need her most.

Rest in the sweetest of peace Vitalya “Tally” Sepot, you will be missed.

Jimmy Fallon Seth Rogen Steve Wozniak Video

Jimmy Fallon sat down with Seth Rogen and the guy who did all the early work inventing the Apple computer empire–and, you know, we kind of wish more talk shows were like this. We know that the Tonight Show is more of a variety show nowadays, and Stephen Colbert is really laboring (unsuccessfully) to change the parameters of late-night television, but we like the idea of people sitting around and smoking and drinking coffee and talking.

But this is the “Truce Confessions” segment of the Tonight Show, so Seth Rogen and Steve Wozniak (who’s played by Seth in the upcoming Steve Jobs) are mixing fun true facts and lies. We’d rather just hear the truth from both of these guys. Still, it’s some pretty interesting television, and always amazing to see Steve Wozniak doing anything that’s high-profile. He’s kind of awkward…

Bone Tomahawk Trailer Video

There were some big-deal coming attractions this week, including the final first look at Spectre, plus Leonard DiCaprio in The Revenant. But there are plenty more great films coming out as we head into the classier part of the movie season. Take a look at the more indie side of things this week, which still promise lots of great viewing at the art houses…

Bone Tomahawk

Here’s the movie that’s kept Kurt Russell wearing a big beard right through Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. There won’t be as much hype for Bone Tomahawk, but this indie Western is getting its own buzz going, with Kurt leading some classic movie stereotypes on a hunt for cannibal Indians who’ve kidnapped Patrick Wilson’s wife. We’re hearing this is a real slow burner, and that reminds us a of a few great classic Westerns. We’ll update this later as a Youtube video…

Ip Man 3

It’s taken five years for martial arts fans to get a new Ip Man movie from Donnie Yen, but this trailer promises lots of mayhem–although one scene seems to be from Ip Man 2. Mike Tyson showing up is sure new, though….

The Forest

Natalie Dormer breaks out of Game of Thrones and becomes a leading lady with this supernatural thriller–based on the notorious Suicide Forest of Japan, where lots of people go to kill themselves. Seems like a great setting–although this Vice documentary is plenty creepy as it details the true story behind the place…

Dangerous Men

And here’s another experiment in salvaging the ’80s from Drafthouse Films, as the distributors piece together a disastrous attempt by Iranian filmmaker John Rad to make an epic action film. Actually, this one started shooting in 1979. Anyway, it looks like fun schlock. Will it be as great as the similar Miami Connection, or ultimately just kind of dull, with the highlights all in the trailer? We’re willing to find out…..

Clemson vs. Notre Dame score updates

Final: Clemson 24, Notre Dame 22: DeShone Kizer throws for 321 yards and two touchdowns with most of them coming in the fourth quarter. Kizer adds a team-high 55 rushing yards for Notre Dame. Wayne Gallman woke up in the rushing game for Clemson in the second half and finished with 98 yards on 22 carries. Deshaun Watson had 97 passing yards and 89 rushing yards. A game that Notre Dame will look back at and wonder what might have been while Clemson should find lucky that they won considering they couldn’t score more off Notre Dame turnovers.

4th Quarter- Clemson 24, Notre Dame 22: Kizer finds Torii Hunter Jr. from one yard out with just seven seconds left which brings the game down to a two-point conversion which is stopped by Clemson as Kizer tried to run the ball in himself. A dramatic comeback from the Fighting Irish in the final 15 minutes that will come out just short and the decision by Brian Kelly to go for two on the first touchdown of the quarter will be talked about for a long time to come.

4th Quarter- 1:13 left: Four turnovers for Notre Dame which they are likely haven’t turned into a ton more points for Clemson. They will get one final chance though after a punt.

4th Quarter- 2:09 left: Wow. Chris Brown makes the catch but fumbles the ball with Clemson recovering at the 5-yard line. Notre Dame gets so, so close and now needs a huge stop with just two timeouts left. Kizer has been a monster in the second half for the Irish with Clemson playing not to lose it would appear.

4th Quarter- 2:19 left: 12 yards away from a chance to tie the game for the Irish as they rush down the field again.

4th Quarter- 4:29 left: Huegel misses a 45-yard field goal that would have locked the game down. Notre Dame still has a chance in the coming minutes.

4th Quarter- 6:36 left: That was quick. Kizer intercepted by B.J. Goodson on the first Notre Dame play. Clemson has to score here to finish this.

4th Quarter- 6:41 left: Notre Dame gets the ball back with a chance to tie the game after Kizer has completed three passes in this final quarter for 115 yards. This one isn’t over yet.

4th Quarter- Clemson 24, Notre Dame 16: This fourth quarter has seen a completely different Kizer and Notre Dame team with the touchdown earlier and now this one to make it a one-possession game with plenty of time left as Kizer runs it in from three yards out with 9:03 to play. Clemson needs a long, time-consuming possession to stop the Irish wave of energy.

4th Quarter- Clemson 24, Notre Dame 9: A key field goal from Greg Huegel will make Notre Dame score two touchdowns and get a two-point conversion along the way with 10:56 to play. If the Irish can continue the connection between Kizer and Prosise, there is still a chance for this game to be competitive in the final few minutes.

4th Quarter- Clemson 21, Notre Dame 9: Suddenly, the Fighting Irish are back in the game on a 56-yard pass from Kizer to Prosise out of the backfield. It’s a game in Death Valley as Prosise has found his way in the pass game instead of the run game. However taking a timeout after the touchdown and before the 2-point conversion attempt which failed will likely come back to haunt Notre Dame.

End of 3rd Quarter- Clemson 21, Notre Dame 3: As the fourth quarter starts, Notre Dame needs to score on this possession. C.J. Prosise is running the ball hard and looks better suddenly. It’s going to be a tough task though down by 18 and was very heavy rain coming shortly to Death Valley. Deshaun Watson has 84 passing yards and 78 rushing yards for Clemson while Prosise has 41 yards on 15 carries. The last 15 minutes are going to be very, very interesting to see if the Irish make this a game or not.

3rd Quarter- 1:01 left: Notre Dame finally catches a break as Watson throws a key interception in the end zone. Irish needed that badly…..

3rd Quarter- 1:46 left: Wayne Gallman has shown up on this drive. Running hard and making a key reception early in the possession. Clemson is moving the ball yet again on the Irish defense.

3rd Quarter- 6:47 left: Hunter Renfrow appears to make a catch on a deflection and even with the officials looking at it; it is one of the best catches anyone will see. Clemson appears to be every break even if the play is overturned.

3rd Quarter- 8:56 left: Rain has picked up and is now coming down in buckets. Notre Dame got the stop they needed on defense but can’t get anything done on offense worthwhile. It’s going to be an uphill battle to rally in this one.

3rd Quarter- 14:03 left: Another Notre Dame fumble……this time from Prosise. Clemson can lock this down if they can score again right here.

3rd Quarter- Clemson 21, Notre Dame 3: There goes Watson again. A 21-yard touchdown run on third down for his third touchdown of the night. A disaster for sure for the Fighting Irish and Watson is showing why he could be leading this Clemson team towards an ACC title this season. Notre Dame needs a huge response out of Kizer and the offense now that they are three possessions behind just 46 seconds into the second half.

3rd Quarter: This simply isn’t Notre Dame’s night. A fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half and the kicker is the one who knocked the ball loose. Clemson getting every break and has a chance to put this game away early on in the second half.

Halftime- Clemson 14, Notre Dame 3: The defenses came to play in the second quarter and the offenses were stopped during those 15 minutes. Watson produced just 13 yards of offense in the second quarter for Clemson while Prosise rushed ten times for just four yards in the first half for Notre Dame. It looks like a completely different game from the first quarter. Kizer is 9-for-19 for 96 yards passing with 33 rushing yards and looked better in the second quarter. If the weather continues to go downhill, there may not be much more scoring in this game. It will be key for Notre Dame and Kizer to find his best receiver in Will Fuller more in the second half. For Clemson, Watson has to find the same running lanes he did in the opening minutes of the game. With many upsets in the top ten already on Saturday, this is a chance for both teams to make a big move up the rankings with a win.

2nd Quarter- 4:06 left: Notre Dame is being dominated by the Clemson front seven and the crowd is really changing things on the Irish, who can’t seem to get anything going. C.J. Prosise has been stopped each and every time he has tried to rush it. The Tigers look very good late in the first half with an 11-point lead.

2nd Quarter- 7:31 left: The Irish commit three straight penalties with two delay of games and a false start. That must be driving Brian Kelly nuts on the sidelines. Then Clemson nearly fumbles away the punt. Mistakes galore in the last few minutes from both sides as the game begins to turn sloppy.

End of 1st Quarter- Clemson 14, Notre Dame 3: The Irish pinned the Tigers back on a punt late in the quarter but Clemson is driving again as the second quarter starts. Watson has 52 yards passing and 50 yards rushing after one quarter of play. Prosise has rushed six times for Notre Dame but has -5 yards on those carries. If the Irish are going to win this game, they need Prosise to get going and have some long runs. It can’t all fall on Kizer on the road. Clemson looks like the dominant team so far at home in Death Valley with a confident Watson under center.

1st Quarter- 2:12 left: Kizer looking better with the offense, going off for a 26-yard run to get Notre Dame into position where they can get this back to a one-possession game. Kizer has thrown 28 yards and rushed for 28 more so far.

1st Quarter- Clemson 14, Notre Dame 3: Justin Yoon hits a long 46-yard field goal to get the Irish on the board but the possession was kept alive by a pass interference call on third down. Notre Dame’s offense looks stuck in the mud during Kizer’s first road start. If he can’t find his receivers and doesn’t continue throwing the ball 90-95 MPH at them, it could be a long night.

1st Quarter- Clemson 14, Notre Dame 0: Another solid possession from Watson and the Tigers offense against an Irish defense that has been getting off the field quickly. Watson hits Artavis Scott for a 13-yard touchdown and it is a quick two-touchdown lead for Clemson with the heavy weather coming. Watson is 4-for-5 passing for 52 yards and two touchdowns to go with 41 rushing yards on two carries.

1st Quarter- 10:20 left: An awful first possession for Notre Dame with two running plays that go nowhere and then Kizer having to run for his life to gain just five yards before a bad punt gives Clemson great field position to start their second possession. This has the potential to get out of hand for the Fighting Irish very quickly if the Tigers go down the field again just like they did on their opening possession.

1st Quarter- Clemson 7, Notre Dame 0: With the rainy weather, the run game was going to be the most important thing. Watson’s opening 38-yard run put Clemson into scoring territory and once again Watson gets the job done on third down to keep the drive going. Watson finds his man in Jordan Leggett to convert another third down and the Tigers take the early 7-0 lead just 2:41 into the game.

Pregame: The weather is going to be a major factor tonight as the two top-15 ranked teams get together. Heavy rain is expected all game long which will make any sort of offense be a challenge in itself. Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer is still learning on the job after taking over for the injured Malik Zaire. Kizer is completing 67.7% of his passes this season but will be challenged to continue that pace in this one.

C.J. Prosise has 600 rushing yards and six touchdowns for the Fighting Irish as well to lead the team. On the Clemson side, Deshaun Watson has been effective under center with seven touchdowns and three interceptions while completing nearly 75% of his passes. With the rain, it will be up to Wayne Gallman to run effectively and has been averaging nearly six yards per rush. Two hours until kickoff and the heavy rain is still on the horizon.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Trailer Video

It’s a quick look at the COED front page to see that we’ve been really excited over the new trailer for the Coen Brothers’ much-anticipated comedy Hail, Caesar! We’ve also already gotten plenty excited over Scarlett Johansson’s hottest photos from the trailer. But there have been a few other big-deal projects giving us sneak peeks this week. It wasn’t the busiest time for trailers, but we’re having a good time checking these out…

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Here’s our first look at the hotly-anticipated movie based on the greatest public-domain rip-off of all time–with “novelist” Seth Grahame-Smith taking Jane Austen’s classic 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice and adding zombies. We’re happy to see this trailer playing things pretty straight until the first undead comes strolling into the set piece. It also looks like this take really revs up the girl-power angle, which is fine with us. All hands on deck when there’s a zombie invasion…

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2

Say goodbye to Phil Hoffman for what will almost be the last time in this new trailer for the latest Hunger Games entry. There have been so many teasers for this movie that this doesn’t really feel like a big deal, but it’s more actual action than we’ve seen yet. We don’t remember any Abominable Snowmen in the books, though….

Gamera

It won’t get the hype of last year’s Godzilla, but there’s a revamping coming out of Japan that features the country’s favorite giant turtle. Gamera is a good guy, and this really creepy trailer does a great job of getting our interest. We don’t mind low-budget special effects when they’re done in a setting like this….

Forever and a Day

Here’s a rock documentary that celebrates 50 years of Scorpions, who are both Germany’s most beloved metal act and most painful joke band. We actually feel kind of bad saying that, since Scorpions sure seem to be taken seriously by a lot of respected metal heads, but no other band looked sillier in spandex. We’re still going to take them seriously enough to check out this tribute…

Janis: Little Girl Blue

And here’s a rock documentary with a lot more sanctioned cool, as director Amy Berg tells the story of doomed blues-rocker Janis Joplin. It’s weird to think that it’s taken this long to get a project that really goes into this kind of depth–but Janis is the kind of subject where you won’t feel stupid spending a lot of time staring at the screen and catching up with the story of a drug casualty…

Michigan vs Northwestern score stats updates

Final: Michigan 38, Northwestern 0

The Wolverines move to 5-1 and 2-0 in the Big Ten Conference with the convincing win. The Wildcats fall to 5-1 and 1-1 in the Big Ten while being shutout. Michigan has shut out their last three opponents and is making a case to be the best defense in the entire country.

4th Quarter- Michigan 38, Northwestern 0: Derick Green scores from four yards out as the Wolverines put an exclamation point on this victory with 2:14 left to play. A complete domination from Michigan all afternoon at home as the Wolverines have 382 total yards to Northwestern’s 158.

4th Quarter- 8:30 left: The reserves are in for both sides as the two teams seem content that this game is over which it was 13 seconds into the game after the kickoff return.

End of 3rd Quarter: Michigan has the ball again and is marching towards another score with 15 minutes left in this game as Michigan is about to improve to 5-1 on the season while Northwestern will fall to 5-1 unless some wacky things happen in the final quarter.

3rd Quarter- 3:03 left: Northwestern gets the ball back on a Michigan punt and still looks lost in Ann Arbor. The Wildcats need to show why they started the season 5-0 instead of the game they are playing in this one.

3rd Quarter- Michigan 31, Northwestern 0: Kenny Allen hits a 47-yard field goal on Michigan’s first possession of the second half and the lead continues to increase for the home team. The Wildcats should just focusing now on just scoring some points.

Halftime- Michigan 28, Northwestern 0

The first 30 minutes have been controlled by the Wolverines who had 213 yards of total offense in the first half compared to 95 yards for the Wildcats. Jake Rudock is 10-for-15 passing for 119 yards for Michigan while Clayton Thorson is 9-for-16 for 71 yards and a big interception. It is shaping up to be a long ride back to Evanston for Northwestern unless they have a miracle comeback in them.

2nd Quarter- Michigan 28, Northwestern 0: The Wolverines tack on another score as Clayton Thorson is picked off by Jourdan Lewis who returns it 37 yards for a touchdown. The offense, defense and special teams have now all scored for Michigan in this one. Northwestern’s perfect season is in very serious jeopardy against an improving and dominant Wolverines squad.

2nd Quarter- 7:43 left: The defenses have woke up in the second quarter of play and neither team is moving the ball at all. That is a very bad sign for Northwestern as they try to chip into the Michigan lead.

End of 1st Quarter: Michigan has 149 yards of offense to Northwestern’s 56 and is dominating every aspect of the game through the first 15 minutes.

1st Quarter- Michigan 21, Northwestern 0: Jake Rudock runs one in from two yards out himself from the quarterback position and the rout is on early in Ann Arbor for the Wolverines. Northwestern is facing a must-score drive in the first quarter if they want to stay in this game. Michigan already has 134 yards of offense in the first 12 minutes of this game.

1st Quarter- 5:46 left: Northwestern finally moves the football but decides to try a field goal on 4th-and-1 and Jack Mitchell’s kick flies wide left as the Wildcats remain scoreless. While the decision by Pat Fitzgerald seemed right on the surface, the missed kick may make him wish that he would have went for it try to cut the Michigan lead in half.

1st Quarter- Michigan 14, Northwestern 0: After a short Wildcats possession, Michigan marches right back down the field capped off by an one-yard touchdown run by Drake Johnson just 4:40 into the game. The Wolverines are looking great at home so far against a Northwestern offense that isn’t built for coming back quickly.

1st Quarter- Michigan 7, Northwestern 0: The Wolverines couldn’t ask for a better start than having Jehu Chesson return the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown just 13 seconds into the game. In a game where defense should be key, that touchdown may be the difference already for Michigan at home in the Big House.

Pregame

A perfect picture day in Ann Arbor for those two Big Ten rivals to get together. Defense is going to be the key to this game and 10 points may be enough for the winning team to prevail. Both teams have shutouts on their record defensively this season and will be looking for more of the same on this Saturday afternoon.
