Last week, COED published a story and video interview regarding Florida and Emory ZBT fraternity members who allegedly spat on US Military Veterans, urinated on the flag, and threw bottles at attendees of the Warrior Beach Retreat.
We (meaning “I”) even went so far as to write the words “sadly for everyone involved, it seems like these allegations are true.” I wrote that because there were firsthand accounts of people who attended the Warrior Beach Retreat, servicemen and women who were quoted as saying these fraternity members “actually spit on me and my service dog as well and that’s just so disrespectful and it hurts.”
Of course, it didn’t help matters that the University of Florida’s ZBT fraternity issued a statement apologizing for their actions in which they wrote “the behavior of some students who attended this event was out of line” and that they had “expelled” members from their fraternity. That sounds a lot like admitting guilt, because it is. At least Emory University flat-out denied that any evidence had been brought forth proving their students had taken part in any nonsense.
The thing is, we are all too aware of the negative connotation that fraternities have nowadays, and as a Phi Delta Theta (PA Beta) brother, I’d like to give the other side of the story because frankly I’m really hoping that this whole situation is all wrong.
So here’s a very well-written letter from Brent Musser that was originally posted on his Facebook wall (we found it on TFM). Brent was at the ZBT trip to Panama City Beach. Read what he has to say below.
“My name is Brett Musser and I am a proud recent alumnus of the ZBT chapter at the University of Florida. Admitting I’m a former member of a fraternity might bring some to believe without ever meeting me let alone talking to me that I’m a wealthy, racist, homophobe, who preys on undergraduate women day and night. This portrayal of fraternity members has been pushed by the national media to the point where no matter what happens, accusations are all that is needed to condemn those who have been merely accused with no regard for the truth. It’s a portrayal that is unfair, inaccurate, and a failure to see people as individuals.
Like most of you who have read the headlines involving my former chapter, I am shocked and disgusted at the accusations being made. I come from a military family with a proud tradition of serving in the United States Marine Corp. My grandfather served in Korea, my father in Desert Storm, an uncle in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and my younger brother is currently serving as a private first class in the USMC. And I am far from alone. Many in ZBT have family currently serving or have served in the US military. A few current members have themselves committed to serve in the armed forces upon graduation.
As someone who was on the trip to Panama City Beach, it’s surreal and not at all surprising how embarrassing our media is and how little facts and the principles of evidence play a role in the world of journalism. I will not comment on the validity of the allegations, others will investigate and decide that. What I do know for a fact is that the members of the ZBT chapter at the University of Florida do not hold any anti-American or anti-veteran sentiment. I personally and everyone I’m associated with would never congregate continuously and purposely with anyone who did hold those views. If any of the allegations are true I would be the first to say good riddance to that person and would be glad to never have contact with them again. What upsets me as someone who knows these young kids is the stimulus response type behavior of the ‘adults’ and ‘professionals’ in the media and our collective social media.
Stimulus: Alleged disgusting and obscene desecration of sacred American symbols by fraternity members.
Journalistic and public analysis: All fraternities very bad. All men in fraternities very bad. All accusations are true.
End of Analysis.
The extreme gap in public credibility between fraternity members and those that have been injured in combat makes it almost impossible for anyone that took part in this past weekend to distance him or herself from it in any reasonable way. As someone who was there at Panama City Beach I can say for a fact that no one I was with nor does anyone I know, know of someone who spit on a veteran or urinated on a flag. This does not mean that it never happened but it also doesn’t mean that someone in the chapter did those things. Facts such as there was a whole other fraternity staying at the hotel on the same weekend and hundreds of other patrons were staying at the resort seem to just skim past some of those in the media, social media and the institutions that govern the chapter. The fraternity issued a general apology under pressure from outside groups at their request even though there has been no formal investigation completed yet because there doesn’t need to be one. It’s quite simple if you’re a member of the media or a social media [user]: All fraternity men are bad people who probably did whatever they are accused of. Due process and full thorough investigations do not need to be made when certain narratives are socially popular. The school and the national organization that represents UF ZBT need to cover their ass, understandably so and everyone in the chapter is supposed to just shut up and take it because being in a fraternity is in itself immoral. It’s unfortunate but it is what it is.
All I would ask, is for those in the media to just do their job ethically and responsibly and for everyone that reads or watches anything by any media outlet to be very skeptical about everything they present to you. Just like those in the media should be skeptical of power and those they report on, the general public should be skeptical of those that report information. As a result of what I would consider a dereliction of duty by those in the media many in the chapter feel physically unsafe due to some events that have occurred over the last 24 hours and the ZBT house itself is under police protection. In addition the President of the chapter has received death threats. A kid any parent would be proud to call son. Someone who would never disrespect another human being let alone a wounded warrior has received death threats from some rightfully pissed off people. The accusations made are horrific and are truly unbelievable to me. I personally want there to be a thorough investigation so if those accusations were in fact committed by certain members of the fraternity they would be expelled immediately with just cause.
The hysteria of our society over controversy is at the very least unhealthy and at worst physically dangerous to those caught up in it. Those that did absolutely nothing wrong are put at risk for a potentially popular story that fits the prevailing theme of fraternities as evil institutions. Taking the time to actually investigate is of secondary importance. It’s yet another sobering reminder to me that you shouldn’t believe everything you read.
I’m tired of great kids that I know being maligned by people who have no knowledge of them, their backgrounds, or the situation. The members are being muzzled for good reason. Whatever they say to defend themselves would more than likely be twisted in such a way that makes the situation worse whether or not it’s what they actually said. They’re easy targets”

The University of Florida and the ZBT National Fraternity announced in a joint statement that the Florida chapter of ZBT has been officially shut down. The decision follows accusations from US military veterans that the UF ZBT fraternity brothers spat on vets and urinated on the flag.
Yes, we’re well aware that we just posted an article that gave the fraternities’ side of the story, but those are the breaks.
The thing is, the closure comes after allegations. The UF investigation is still ongoing. Did the school already find something ?

Since EA Sports has been stuck in the clubhouse for the past couple years — it has dropped Tiger Woods and will release Rory McIlroy PGA Tour in July — there’s a void for other golf sims to fill. The Golf Club takes a solid swing at the effort, focusing on the core mechanics while willfully neglecting the style, licensing and presentation refinements that Tiger Woods fans had gotten used to. The result is a stopgap that seems like filler while golf gamers wait for the debut of Rory, but it’s one you can spend hours on, racking up progress in a deep, involving series of offline or online campaigns. What matters most about the game is it feels right.
The Golf Club is strictly for those who enjoy golf for the sport itself, and not the players or authentic courses that make up the PGA. You need patience and precision to time your stick-controlled swings just right for maximum power and accuracy. Just like real golf, you’re punished severely for your inevitable screwups, and are forced to make the best of the messes you create for yourself. Golf has always been one of the sports that eased into gaming with the most sense of realism, and The Golf Club is careful to get the basics right while not going overboard in an effort to stand out. While the solid yet bland main game is nothing special, Greg Norman-backed course designer adds tons of replay value. Myriad terrain, backdrop and texture options let you create and share just about anything you can dream up.

Sick of suffering through story cinematics and bland dialogue in between attempts at lining up headshots? Tower of Guns may be your speed. A throwback to the Doom/Quake era of minimal story and maximum bullet blazing, Tower of Guns tosses aside anything that holds up the action. It’s you, a flashy array of guns and hyper aggressive enemies who take you down with prejudice, sending you back bitter and willing to take another shot at the grind. Even its occasional glitches add a bit to the charm, giving the game a little bit of a bootleg-style shareware title you might have played in the 90s.
Procedurally-generated levels keep you on your heels, unable to get by with trial-and-error repetition. If you liked the rapid fire obliteration of Blood Bowl on Xbox 360, this just may be your jam. Just don’t expect the thrills to last. Good for quick thrills in short spurts, Tower of Guns doesn’t much stick to the ribs. The very thing that makes it stand out also holds it back, with its lack of story leaving you little sense of progression or purpose. It’s a questionable buy for $15 on Xbox One, but a must-play steal are a freebie on PS4 for PlayStation Plus members.

The most humorous and satire-filled strategy franchise makes its current-gen debut, refining its well-honed mix of world-building, crowd control and sleazy under-the-table arrangements that come with being a Third World dictator. You take control of your banana republic, micromanaging everything from foreign policy down to housing. trade and economic production. It’s a balancing act to protect your populace from bullying from superpowers, recovering from natural disasters and fending off usurpers. To survive and thrive, you’ve got to be a good-hearted slimeball who keeps his people happy while also looking out for yourself and your cronies.
While there’s no noticeable graphical improvements from the last-gen Tropico games, and the adjustments to gameplay are only noticeable if you go back and play one of the older games, Tropico 5 is still an easy recommendation. There’s nothing else like it on the Xbox One or PS4, and there’s enough to see, do and tweak for dozens of playthroughs, none of which will play out even remotely alike. A humorous, strategy-minded power trip, the game lets you lord over your own empire, infusing it with not only your thoughts but a required sense of absurdity.

The biggest fight in a very long time is coming up this Saturday night when Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao get together in the squared circle. Tickets for the event in Las Vegas have been hard to come by and very, very expensive. It was reported earlier this week that somebody on StubHub paid $40,955 for a ticket to the fight. The people who were able to get actual tickets for the fight have been trying to make a huge profit off the tickets. As of Wednesday morning, there were some tickets that were priced over $300,000 on the website. That is definitely a bundle of money that would go down the drain if the fight were to last only a round or less.
It is probably more about the experience for some people anyway and spending that much money is worth it just to say that there were in the building when the Fight of the Century went on. Hopefully for those who pay six figures for their tickets, Mayweather and Pacquiao put on a 12-round battle that comes down to a decision so they get their money’s worth.
