Hot Games of the Week Reviewed: April 14th

Mortal Kombat X

A new console generation doesn’t truly start until there are Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games to play on them, and the PS4/Xbox One era takes a major step toward increased cultural reference this week, now that the stunning Mortal Kombat X has dropped. Rounding up favorite characters from the past while tossing in some new blood, as well as movie psychos including Jason Voorhees and Predator, the series is reborn in its strongest iteration yet.

There are a couple other intriguing rehashes out, including Fruit Ninja Kinect 2 for Xbox One and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D on Nintendo’s New 3DS.

Reviews by Phil Villarreal. Phil is an authorblogger and Twitterer. Publishers provided review copies.

Fruit Ninja Kinect 2

Fruit Ninja Kinect 2

(Xbox One, $15, Everyone)

Kinect-exclusive games are almost always terrible, but simple, mobile-style ports like the Fruit Ninja series somehow have found a sweet spot that keeps them from becoming maddening chores like most of the others. It’s a lot of fun to stand in front of your TV and karate-chop tumbling fruits on your TV screen, and an added bonus that you burn a few calories in the process. With a bunch of new modes and levels to tackle, there is plenty of game here to sink your sword into.

The only drawback is a significant one — the price. Fruit Ninja games are available as free-to-play or less than $1 on mobile devices, so it’s tough to justify paying $15 for pretty much the same thing. The multiplayer, party-game aspect may make it worth a look, particularly for those who always have a lot of people over or are looking for something to play with their kids, but otherwise you may want to hang tight and wait for the price to get sliced like a ninja-attacked watermelon.

Four years after the last franchise reboot came out, the arcade staple is reborn once more on new-gen consoles. A quantum leap above the previous iteration in visuals, move sets and online integration, the new Mortal Kombat retains the gratuitously gory feel and rock-solid balance and mechanics, updating them with finer points from rival fighters and advancing the genre with new flourishes. Gruesome fatalities, over-the-top mid-round set pieces and tons of entertaining extras and side-challenges round out an excellent fighter.

The biggest new addition is a faction system, which calls on gamers to commit to groups that wage a persistent war against each other. Every accomplishment you achieve, in single-player or online, contributes to your faction’s progress. That’s only the beginning of the new online additions, with a slew of new modes there to test your mettle against the cutthroat community. There’s a rock-paper-scissors gamesmanship aspect that goes into the setup, with players selecting a fighting style, each of which come with its own attacks and specials. Customization is king throughout the game, with a strong mix of characters, costumes and stages that pays tribute to the franchise’s past while pushing it hard into new horizons. The bar is set high for Street Fighter, SoulCalibur and Tekken to throw down in the new-gen fighter ring.

One of the Wii U’s best role-playing games gets shrink-wrapped and remastered for Nintendo’s new handheld. Confusingly, the game won’t work on the regular 3DS, and was made exclusively for the latest iteration of the handheld, which boosts processing speed, adds shoulder buttons and a nub that acts as a second control stick. With sweeping vistas that serve as the backdrop for massive battles, the game works as an excellent showpiece to show off what the system is capable of. Although the looks can’t quite replicate the splendor of the Wii, they surpass anything that’s been on the 3DS before.

The game plays just as it did in 2012 on the Wii, losing little in translation by doing away with the controller in favor of the handheld button setup. Some archaic JRPG gameplay aspects — such as grinding, unskippable scenes and dialogue-heavy portions that go nowhere — rear their head, which is to be expected given the game originally came out in Japan in 2010. But this is still one of the best-executed specimens in the genre, and the best-looking 3DS game on the market. While it may not be a system-seller that sparks gamers to upgrade to the new system, it’s a hefty bonus for those who have made the switch.

Manny Pacquiao Can’t Sing, Should Stick to His Day Job

Boxer Manny Pacquiao has a music video and the song is rumored to be his entrance tune in the fight against Floyd Mayweather. Titled “Lalaban Ako Para Sa Pilipino” – “I will fight for the Philippines” – you’d expect the song to be a bit manlier than this, but we’re trying to refrain from judgement.

Check it out below.

Stephen Curry Makes 77 Straight 3-Pointers In Practice

Curry 3 Point Shot

When people think about the best three-point shooters in the NBA today, the first name that comes to mind is Warriors guard Stephen Curry. It would appear that he could hit shots from anywhere on the court and during a practice on Tuesday, Curry showed what he can really do. Curry made 77 straight three-pointers and 94 out of 100.

Curry told ESPN that the 77 was the most he had ever made in a row. It is completely insane to think of someone making 77 straight three-pointers no matter what the situation is, practice or no practice and definitely not in a game. Curry has already broken the NBA record for 3-pointers made in a season and is averaging nearly four per game.

The playoffs are drawing near and Curry is going to have a chance to show what he can do on the biggest stage of them all. While he isn’t going to make 77 straight three-pointers, he definitely could make enough in a row to get the Warriors to a place they haven’t been in quite a long time with the NBA Finals.

Spuran Spuran Music Video

Matt Bonner of the San Antonio Spurs just made the weirdest, most nightmare inducing music video we’ve ever seen. It’s by Spuran Spuran (aka Kawhi Leonard, Matt Bonner, Patty Mills, Aron Baynes, and the Coyote) and it’s called “Spurs.”

It’s a play on the Tim and Eric song, “Sports.”

Yeah, good luck getting some sleep after seeing this. The Coyote will 100% send someone to the mental institution.

20 Fake Tinder Profiles That Are Too Good To Be True [PHOTOS]

Anyone on Tinder knows that to get the best responses you have to go above and beyond to stand out. You’re competing against thousands of people who want a li’l action just as badly as you.

That’s why the unspoken laws of Tinder say it OK to brag and show off a little bit.

But every now and then you come across some Tinder profiles that are just too good to be true. Some of them are obvious (“I love d*ckpics”), some are somewhat questionable (“I have no emotional attachment to sex”). That’s why you need to be careful about your swipes. You never know if you’ve somehow stumbled on the woman of your dreams on a dating app or are getting catfished by a 13-year-old boy who just learned about butt sex.

We’ve gone ahead and done you the service of pulling some very fishy profile pictures so that you don’t make any mistakes.

Shout out to all our readers and friends for coming to party with us, Bud Light, and the Miss COED Christy Turner at The Dogwood last night.

No one’s ever doubted if the residents of Austin were #UpForWhatever, but they still showed up in full force to our event last night to audition for their chance to attend Bud Light’s Whatever, USA. In return for giving them the opportunity of a lifetime, our guests got complimentary Bud Lights and tasty, delicious fajitas.

There was a totally chill Austin vibe throughout the whole night (which was the first time the city had seen good weather in forever) and as an added bonus we enjoyed making some new friends. Make sure to tag yourself in the photos on our Facebook page.

Ask a Babe: Christen Dye Answers Your Life Questions

Christen Dye Hot Photos (6)

Look – life can be hard, and sometimes we need help. And who knows how to do life better than you? Hot girls.

Luckily model, real estate agent, and complete stunner Christen Dye is here to help. The Tennessee native contemplated your most pressing questions in between bikini shots and selling those mansions, so be grateful!

Here’s what she had to say about shedding girls, ex-boyfriends, and how the hell chicks get skinny jeans on:

I’ve had my eye on this girl for a while, but she doesn’t actually know me (we’re not in any of the same classes, have the same friends, etc.). Is it weird to ask her out anyway? Will she think I’m stalking her?
No its not weird! Don’t say anything like, “I saw you on Facebook” or “I have been watching you,” and you should be just fine.

I went on a date with a girl who had food stuck in her teeth all night. I can’t see her again. How do I explain this to her?
Don’t. Just let it go. No need to be hurtful – always be friendly. But make it clear you’re not interested. Never mention the food in her teeth though…

Why do I always find girl’s hair everywhere? I’m not even dating anyone!
LOL! Girls shed. We try hard to have that pretty flowing thick hair. We fluff it with our hands constantly and it ends up getting left behind everywhere.

I’m interested in this girl but she keeps talking about her ex-boyfriend. I get it, he’s an awful human being. How do I make her stop? And why is she doing this?
She’s not over him. From the sound of it, he hurt her pretty deep and she’s not ready for anything yet. You’re probably just a friend or a rebound. Not saying it won’t turn into anything, but you can’t “make her stop.” If you tell her you don’t want to hear it, she’ll probably stop talking to you. Your choice.

How much does a beard matter? Do girls find them better looking?
Depends on the girl. I personally like a little stubble, but not that duck commander-style long beard.

Why do chicks always go to the bathroom in groups?
Usually to gossip, or they need something from their friend. No, it isn’t weird if you do it with your guy friends.

How the hell do girls get skinny jeans on? They’re impossible to take off.
By jumping up over and over to get them up over our butts.

Lil Dicky’s New Cut “Classic Male Pregame” Is So True It Hurts [VIDEO]

Lil Dicky Classic Male Pregame

Lil Dicky is one of the realest rappers out there right now. Not “real” like in the sense of how the streets mean, I mean like he is actually spitting the truth. So when he came out with a music video for his new song “Classic Male Pregame” I knew it was going to be right on point. I wish I was wrong.

It’s so true. Sad. But true.

I’ve been out of college for a lot longer than I’d like to admit right now, but the fact of the matter is that my pregame strength isn’t nearly as strong as it used to be. The fact that I have a girlfriend probably doesn’t help either.

But I do know that the definition of pregaming with my friends before we leave has completely changed since my college years. Gone are the days of smoking and drinking until 11 PM when we hit the bars until closing time. Make no mistake, I’m still doing that sh*t–it’s just now I don’t actually leave the house or the couch.

But the plaid shirt joke is right on point. The gum reference is spot on. The puke thing… not so much. Get it together dude.

That Dennis Quaid Freakout Came Courtesy of Funny Or Die, Or Did It?

0

Dennis Quaid

Was Funny or Die behind the Dennis Quaid freakout meltdown video? Because although they’ve claimed responsibility for the viral video, I’m now legitimately confused.

But before we continue, first watch the video below.

OK, so you watched it? Great. Now we can get to the parts I don’t understand.

Everything from this point on is based on the fact that a good bit of me still believes the original video is real. Like, that’s some fantastic acting from Dennis if it’s not. So that got me hypothesizing that there’s a chance Funny Or Die got a phone call from his publicist who was all like “We have Dennis available for a skit for you.” And then they shot this.

Obviously there’s some great material to work with “Dopey the D*ck,” “a bunch of pu**ies staring at me,” etc. The only thing that makes me think this was actually a setup is because Dennis yells “AND THIS F*CKING BABY.” He doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy to cuss out a baby.

So what then? Did Funny or Die then approach Croc Blowdriers with Dennis Quaid in hand and be all like, “Yo we have a great idea for a skit that can get people talking about your product.” And then make money from it? Because that blowdrier is really the hero of the whole sketch.

I don’t know. There’s a lot to take in with all of this. I just don’t trust the internet anymore.

WATCH: UK Quarterback Punched By EKU Players [VIDEO]

UK Sucker Punch

A video of UK Quarterback Drew Barker getting sucker punched in the head by EKU Patrick Graffree has emerged today. The security footage shown comes from Telford Hall at Eastern Kentucky University.

Those of you who haven’t pissed away your brain cells will remember that there was another altercation between EKU lineman Colton Scurry and KU players that resulted in Scurry being sent to the hospital with facial fractures. That video was also released today.

The video you see above is more than likely a response to that fight. Patrick Graffree, the guy who comes in obviously looking for a fight (considering he’s in the door and throwing punches within seven seconds) was actually a bummy KU player who wasn’t getting any playing time so he transferred.

The two black guys who are up against the desk are also KU football players who are likely being told to leave because of the earlier fights. They do nothing when Drew Parker is sucker punched.

Clayton Scurry Bar Fight Video

The security footage from the Richmond, KY bar fight involving Eastern Kentucky University’s Clayton Scurry and the University of Kentucky football team was released today. Watch it below:

Some interesting things to take away from this bar fight:

• You can clearly see from the footage that Clayton was responsible for instigating the fight. He got his just dues when he was sent to the hospital with multiple facial fractures.

Clayton Scurry Fight video

• You can also make out Kentucky’s QB Drew Barker riling up Clayton and even getting in a few punches. He’s the guy in the light colored-looking hat above. He was later sucker punched at an EKU dorm lobby later that night.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is officially retiring from the runway after 20 long-legged, glorious years.

Tom Brady’s smokin’ hot wife posted an Instagram photo earlier today celebrating what is expected to be her last runway show at Sao Paulo Fashion Week:

We may never have the opportunity to see her walking alongside fellow lingerie-clad Victoria’s Secret angels again, but we’re hoping we can still find her in similar fashion in magazines. Fingers crossed.

Believe it or not, that massive space is actually ΣX’s backyard. It’s the same house that threw that Heaven/Hell rager.

ΣX and AEPi got a bunch of sororities and friends together to celebrate Kamala Trunks, a clothing brand co-founded by a Junior Sigma Chi brother.

Additionally, the whole thing was sponsored and organized by the social calendar app Toga. If there are more parties like this on Toga, you can bet your bottom dollar we’re downloading that that ish right now.

WATCH: Rex Ryan Makes Fun Of Tom Brady’s First Pitch [VIDEO]

Washington Nationals v Boston Red Sox

There is no time to rest in the offseason for NFL teams and their casual teasing of each other over certain instances. When Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw out the first pitch at the Red Sox game on Monday, Brady bounced the pitch to home plate. [lead image via Maddie Meyer / Getty Images Sports]

This prompted new Bills head coach Rex Ryan to poke fun at Brady and his pitch.

Ryan threw a ceremonial first pitch at the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons’ home opener last week and according to ESPN.com said the following, “My pitch actually made it to the plate. It was a little wide but I understand somebody bounced it. I’m not sure who it was but Tom needs to keep his elbow up a little bit more.”

It was the perfect chance for Ryan to get back at Brady for all the times he beat him while coaching the Jets for many years. Brady will get his chance for revenge on Ryan when the two teams meet on the football field this coming fall. It would be quite fun if they played in the opener to the season and Brady was able to “keep his elbow up” and threw three or four touchdowns.
