‘It Follows:’ Must Read Reviews From Movie Critics

It Follows Movie
Indie horror flick It Follows has been getting hype long before its Friday the 13th release, and based on the premise, we can see why. The story revolves around a suburban teen losing her virginity, but rather than the post-coital awkwardness being the worst thing she has to deal with, she’s told by her fleeting lover that he passed on an amorphous zombie demon that will now follow her everywhere she goes. So much for cheap thrills.

The allegory sounds simple – if you have sex, you’re probably gonna die – but based on the reviews, there’s a whole lot more going on, and every bit of it is terrifying.

It Follows Reviews

“It may only be March, but we already have a contender for the year’s best horror film:It Follows, out [today]. Arriving on a wave of hype to which it ably lives up, David Robert Mitchell’s indie revolves around a young suburban girl named Jay (Rebecca Green) who falls for a new boy in town and, after a few dates, decides to have sex with him. In their post-coital embrace, she’s knocked out, and awakens to find herself tied to a chair in a dingy abandoned building, where her beau informs her that she’s now infected with some sort of curse, and that strange, slowly walking ghoulish figures will now stalk her until she passes “it” on to someone else via intercourse. What ensues is an ominous thriller that, in form and content, wears its genre influences on its sleeve.”

Vulture thinks it’s more disturbing than anything else.

“After seeing the indie horror film It Follows, I’m suddenly convinced that there’s nothing more blood-freezing than a lone figure, clear as day, relatively normal-looking, walking at a moderate pace from way back in the frame toward the front… My whole life I’ve been a horror-movie freak, and I’ve rarely been as scared as I was at It Follows. But it wasn’t a fun kind of scare. It was the so-upset-I-feel-sick kind of amorphous dread. I felt sure that there was no way the young director, David Robert Mitchell, could get his heroine out of the situation she was in, and that this would be another of those horror movies that ends on a note of defeat and utter nihilism — or utter cynicism, if you figure that most modern horror films that end with the monster still up and about will turn into “franchises.” (I’ll never not use that word without quotation marks, because when I grew up, a franchise was a 7-Eleven store or a Mobil station.) I didn’t trust him, which actually might be a sign of his skill.”

The L.A. Times believes it conjures up a nightmarish dread nostalgic of its predecessors.

“While it taps that time-honored (especially the ’70s) horror movie trope that presents the “monster” as a cautionary metaphor for teen promiscuity, “It Follows” adeptly layers in creepy subtext and intensely pitched nightmarish dread to nerve-jangling effect. Also welcome are the convincing performances by Monroe and young, fresh-faced cast mates playing relatable characters who don’t fall prey to the bone-headed moves that tend to typify contemporary horror-flick behavior.”

The Rolling Stone says is just plain cool.

“Writer-director David Robert Mitchell (The Myth of the American Sleepover) has clearly studied up on John Carpenter, especially Halloween. But Mitchell has his own twisted gift for letting atmosphere help define character. It Follows creeps you out big-time in that cool way that freezes the blood. With the help of haunting wide-screen images from cinematographer Michael Gioulakis, the tension escalates so high we’re not sure what we’re seeing. The uncertainty breaks the film’s spell near the end. Till then, It Follows shakes you up good.”

IGN thinks it’s original, but it isn’t for everyone.

“It’s a refreshing change for modern horror, which has become far too reliant on jump scares and deafening sound cues, in place of carefully mounting tension. Mitchell prefers a slow burn. The use of wide shots is particularly successful once Jay starts being pursued. It’s almost like a sick game of ‘Where’s Wally?’ – find the plodding killer in the frame before it’s too late… [It Follows is] a hauntingly original and genuinely unsettling take on familiar spooky elements that ultimately doesn’t quite hang together and might even alienate hardcore horror fans. But there’s huge promise here from writer-director David Robert Mitchell and, whatever the genre, it’ll be worth seeing how he follows it up.”

DeMarco Murray‘s girlfriend is Heidi Mueller. Well, really Heidi is DeMarco’s fiancee because the Philadelphia Eagle RB put a ring on her finger two months ago. She’s also the mother of his child, Savanna June.

Heidi used to be a television actor on the soap opera Passions, where she played the role of Kay Bennett. I’m not exactly sure what that show was about because I was in school but she must have done a bang up job to land a stud like Murray.

She was there when DeMarco signed with the Eagles and posted this photo.

WATCH: Awkward Jeopardy Episode Proves Contestants Are Actually Dumb

Jeopardy
Jeopardy has had its fair share of awful contestants – and even more so, awful answers – but last night’s episode may have been the most awkward one yet.

After two of the three contestants were in the negatives, Alex Trebek was left alone with contestant Kristin in the Final Jeopardy round. Sadly, she was no gem. All three of these people were true disappointments (even Trebek agreed, subtly) which makes the video that much funnier. Check it out below.

UMD Kappa Sigma Newest Email Is Pretty Rapey and Racist

Fraternity brothers: stop emailing people stuff. I mean, most importantly you should teach your brothers about respect and all that, but you should also stop sending emails. [lead image credit John T. Consoli]

Nothing good will come from sending a bunch of people a an email about getting some basement brain, especially when you sprinkle in phrases like “f*ck consent” and “don’t invite any n****r gals.”

Unfortunately a fraternity at UMD, Kappa Sigma, is now learning this advice the hard way. They’re facing discipline after an email they sent in January is now circulating the web.

Here’s the email in full:

“Regardless of the rush shirt let’s get rachet as f*** during rush week. My d**k will be sucked and f***ed in compound basement whether you guys like it or not. Don’t invite any n****r gals or curry monsters or slanted eye chinks, unless they’re hot. Ziggy you’re [sic] girl can come she’s cool. Remember my n***as, erect, assert, and insert, and above all else, f*** consent … d**ks untouched.”

So yeah. Not a good look, bros.

UMD College Park President Wallace Loh issued the following statement:

“The vulgar language in the email expresses views that are reprehensible to our campus community. We have immediately met with the student involved and a University investigation is underway, led by the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct.

We are in contact with the University chapter of Kappa Sigma and they have taken swift and decisive action in this matter. At their request, the University has committed to provide educational training on diversity and respect for the entire family.”

The fact of the matter is that this email was brought to the school’s attention on Tuesday. The photo that’s circulating of the email has the word “n****r” highlighted in yellow, which leads us to believe that someone was searching for that term. Our guess is that someone logged into an email account of a Kappa Sigma brother digging for dirt and posted that. Sh*tty? Absolutely. Still, if you don’t send an email like that in the first place this wouldn’t have happened.

SAE to Sue Oklahoma University for Deeming Them Racist

SAE
Oklahoma University has already had quite a week, and the story continues. After the university expelled the two SAE fraternity brothers who were allegedly responsible for the racist chant video that went viral, the fraternity is now lawyering up.

Apparently the brothers have hired high profile attorney Stephen Jones to represent them in court against David L. Boren and Oklahoma University. Jones essentially believes that the students are being treated unfairly.

According to KFOR News in Oklahoma:

Jones says the two students who were expelled because of the incident have apologized sincerely for their remarks, and now the incident is being exploited.

He said they lacked judgment in a social setting, but they should not be tarred and feathered as racists.

The decision to hire Jones came after an emergency meeting held by SAE members and alumni.

Apparently New Mexico’s got nothing on Indiana. Late last night, police discovered a meth lab inside a Walmart bathroom in Muncie, Indiana.

Employees called police around 11:30 last night after discovering an unattended backpack in the men’s room. After opening it, authorities found an active meth lab.

We have no idea how a meth lab can fit inside of a backpack, but either way, that’s insane. Investigators dismantled the “lab” and cleared the chemicals from the store. Both restrooms were thoroughly decontaminated before allowing customers back inside.

Doctor’s Perform World’s First Successful Dong Transplant on 21-Year-Old Circumcision Victim

penis transplant
Doctors in South Africa have changed medical history after being the first to successfully perform a full penis transplant.

The victim, a 21-year-old dude who had to get his member amputated three years prior after a botched circumcision, had the surgery done in early December. Doctors thought it would take at least two years for him to gain full function, but after four months, he’s feeling good.

Apparently losing your d*ck in South Africa is more likely than we’d like to think about (we’re talking 250+), so this medical breakthrough is monumental. Such surgeries have been tried before, but long-term success had never before been witnessed, and doctors were surprised by the results.

In a report from Sky News, Professor Andre van der Merwe, who led the procedure, stated, “There is a greater need in South Africa for this type of procedure than elsewhere in the world, as many young men lose their penises every year due to complications from traditional circumcision… For a young man of 18 or 19 years, the loss of his penis can be deeply traumatic.”

No s**t. We feel for all of the victims, literally.

NoDa Brewing Company’s Hop, Drop and Roll Is What’s On Tap

NoDa Brewing Company

Every now and then the craft beer world and stars align and a friend sends you a brew that you have been waiting to try and one that will make for the perfect beer review. The beer I am drinking this weekend is one that is sought after by craft beer drinkers around the country and is the 2014 World Beer Cup Gold Award Winner for American-Style IPA! To say that I am excited would be an understatement. This weekend NoDa Brewing Company’s Hop, Drop, and Roll is What’s on Tap!

Brewing out of the great craft beer state of North Carolina, however NoDa is not from one of the state’s craft beer hot-spots of either Asheville or Raleigh. NoDa Brewing Company is based out of Charlotte and is one of the biggest reasons Charlotte’s craft beer scene has exploded in the past 2-3 years. Their IPA, Hop, Drop, and Roll is a mouth-watering brew that has all of the IPA goodness one would ever want or need.

Hop, Drop’s appearance is classic IPA cloudy yellow-goldenish that immediately gives off an aroma of citrus, earthy notes (mainly grass), and plenty of hops. Hop, Drop’s taste is equally fantastic, full of front-forward hops with a nice blend of citrus flavors; I am getting a lot of grapefruit, that finishes with a nice bitterness. There are some slight malt notes but only to provide a balance to the hops. Because of all of the hoppyness it is easy to think that when drinking this brew it is an Imperial or Double IPA but at “only” 7.2 ABV it is easily one of my favorite IPAs.

My recommendation is to pair this brew with anything and everything. If you can get your hands on one, and I recommend that you do, enjoy it. I almost think the beer is too good to drink with anything else. Pour yourself a pint and savor this great IPA!

Cheers!

Luke Bryan PCB

Luke Bryan has been crushing the Spring Break crowd down in Panama City Beach for years. His shows are probably the biggest concerts of the year for the city, playing for hundreds of thousands of Spring Breakers at Spinnaker Beach Club.

Last year we missed his show by one day but everyone we met couldn’t stop talking about it. Judging from the photos and posts we’ve seen on social media, that’s going to be the same reaction this year.

Unlike other places in PCB, fans at the Luke Bryan shows seemed in good spirits. Instead of throwing fists, they were throwing footballs at Luke.

David Letterman Top Ten Spring Break Video

David Letterman did a Top Ten list last night on “The Top Ten Things You Don’t Want To Hear On Spring Break,” which saved us the trouble of writing one–but we could have, and it would’ve been really funny. Now you just have to take our word for it. Sorry about that. We had the idea, though.

Anyway, it’s a nice reminder that David Letterman’s shows used to be The Daily Show for the college crowd, and it’s nice to see that the retiring talk-show host still has Spring Break on his mind. It’s a pretty good list, too. Check it out, but remember that the one thing you always want to hear during Spring Break is, “Hey, we’re at one of COED’s choices for America’s 20 Trashiest Spring Break Destinations!” People actually say that…

New Movie Trailers: ‘San Andreas,’‘Roar,’ And More [VIDEOS]

San Andreas Trailer Video

Yeah, we’re starting to see a lot more movies for guys coming up here now, which makes us really happy. We’ve already taken a look at Eli Roth’s Clown (although we were expecting his slasher film Thanksgiving first), along with the Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck. But this week also promised some amazing action on both the big and small screens–including Dwayne Johnson singlehandedly stopping an earthquake. Let’s get wound up for the movies…

San Andreas

Yeah, it’s an old-fashioned disaster movie that’s full of so much mayhem that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson doesn’t even have to take up most of the trailer. This one’s looking like a lot of fun, plus you get the shaking and quaking bod of Alexandra Daddario. Also, we like how this movie seems set to prove that The Rock can take a boat right over a tidal wave, unlike that wimpy George Clooney in The Perfect Storm

Tomorrowland

Speaking of George Clooney–he’s playing a former child genius in Tomorrowland. Also, we’re not ingenious enough to keep track of what’s going on with the Tomorrowland trailers. We though there was a Japanese trailer that leaked this week with lots of new imagery, but this one also seems to have all kinds of cool new imagery, even though the plot is still being kept vague…

Skin Trade

Dolph Lundgren plays a cop from New Jersey who teams up with international action star Tony Jaa, plus Michael Jai White as some kind of Fed, and the bad guy is Ron Perlman–so that’s pretty much a low-budget Expendables right there. We know that most of the country will be getting this via VOD, but we’re really hoping it plays Times Square. And, yeah, the trailer’s been out for a while, but we’re finally getting a release date…

Inside Out

It’s a kiddie film, but it’s a Pixar kiddie film, and we’re excited about any movie that gets people talking about Herman’s Head–which is the really cool old sitcom that this movie is kind of emulating, but that’s okay…

Roar (1981)

No, it’s not a new Katy Perry documentary. Roar is a real Holy Grail to fans of bad movies, with former movie star Tippi Hedren having once decided to make an environmental horror movie about lions going mad and slaughtering people. That was easy for Tippi to make, since she ran a big cat refuge. Roar became legendary, though, because the cast members (including Tippi and her daughter Melanie Griffith) kept getting mauled. The movie sat unfinished, but now it’s getting a release. We wish the trailer was more vintage, though. Also injured, by the way: cameraman Jan de Bont, who got his skull cracked open, but he still went on to direct Speed and sleep with one of our girlfriends…

We’re getting a little worried about the daily COED Instagram feed, since we almost had a heart attack over the winter with babes like Jess Harbour. Now things are actually warming up around the COED offices, and we don’t see how our hearts can handle the strain of proper bikini weather.

We sure have plenty of bikini’d babes parading around this week, with beauties like Anastasia Ashley, Sahara Ray, Brittny Ward, and Dani MathersDanielle Knudson and Cami Li might be in lingerie, but it looks close enough to swimsuits to get us all excited for this Spring Break weather, anyway. Montana vs Northern Arizona End Video

Friday the 13th had a big finish with the 2015 Big Sky Conference Semifinal between Montana and Northern Arizona–culminating in some of the most serious craziness to ever end a conference basketball game anywhere. We have raw video of the whole gory finish that pretty much was a perfect storm of weirdness resulting in a near-brawl.

You’ll need some idea of what’s happening, so here goes: The game gets tied at 59 points, courtesy of Northern Arizona’s Kris Yanku. There are only 8 seconds left in the game, and Montana’s Jordan Gregory goes nuts with a layup that puts his team ahead at 61-59 with 4 seconds left in the game.

That’s all just an exciting game, but then a Montana assistant coach gets a little too carried away and leaps off the bench and onto the court. It’s pretty amazing to watch him dive back across the sideline to try and beat a technical foul. It’s not fast enough for NAU coach Jack Murphy, though. He’s in the dark suit, and pissed off that the refs don’t call a foul over the mistake. Yanku makes a valiant shot to tie up the game, misses, and Northern Arizona loses the game.

Which could still be peaceful, but UM coach Travis DeCuire walks up to shake Murphy’s hand, and that doesn’t go well. It looks to us like Murphy shouts, “You cheated!” while shaking hands, and we know for sure that Coach DeCuire doesn’t appreciate getting that response. We don’t support fighting in sports, so don’t watch if you expect to see the coaches throwing punches–but it sure gets close. Take a look and marvel at this big weird finish…

UFC 185: Roy Nelson Takes A Low Blow, But Might Be The Real Champion [GIF]

Roy Nelson Alistair Overeem UFC 185 Video

UFC 185 happened last night, and there were a few highlights–like new UFC champion Rafael dos Anjos, and a good brawl between Germaine de Randamie and Larissa Pacheco (Germaine won), and we had some good nachos. But the best/most painful came with a fight between Roy Nelson fights and Alistair Overeem in a Heavyweight bout.

We know that Roy Nelson is a real fan favorite because he looks more like Zach Galifianakis making a movie about UFC, but he was pretty much punished by Alistair last night. Specifically, one body part was punished in a shot that nobody was particularly upset about, because it was obvious that Alistair didn’t need to land a low blow to win the match.

Also, you have to be pretty impressed by how Roy manages to not just throwing in the towel like Zach Galifianakis making a movie about a COED editor. And so we ask who the real winner was last night: Alistair Overeem, who just has the adoration of the masses, or Roy Nelson, who (presumably) still has the use of his genitalia and didn’t cry about it during one the year’s biggest sporting events? Judge for yourself…
