Does Anyone Care What Color ‘The Dress’ Is? Apparently, Yes

0

The Dress
‘The Dress’–who knew there could be so much fuss over the coloring of a goddamn dress? But alas, everyone seems to have an opinion (presumably because working is no longer a thing/no one has anything better to talk about).

The conversation started/ruined our lives earlier today when Swiked posted the photo on Tumblr. After a slew of frustrating commentators blew up her feed, news that it was an optical illusion finally made it’s way through the depths of blogs, and the original coloring was revealed:

Black and Blue Dress

According to Wired, it works like this:

Light enters the eye through the lens—different wavelengths corresponding to different colors. The light hits the retina in the back of the eye where pigments fire up neural connections to the visual cortex, the part of the brain that processes those signals into an image. Critically, though, that first burst of light is made of whatever wavelengths are illuminating the world, reflecting off whatever you’re looking at. Without you having to worry about it, your brain figures out what color light is bouncing off the thing your eyes are looking at, and essentially subtracts that color from the “real” color of the object. “Our visual system is supposed to throw away information about the illuminant and extract information about the actual reflectance,” says Jay Neitz, a neuroscientist at the University of Washington. “But I’ve studied individual differences in color vision for 30 years, and this is one of the biggest individual differences I’ve ever seen.” (Neitz sees white-and-gold.)

Usually that system works just fine. This image, though, hits some kind of perceptual boundary. That might be because of how people are wired. Human beings evolved to see in daylight, but daylight changes color. That chromatic axis varies from the pinkish red of dawn, up through the blue-white of noontime, and then back down to reddish twilight. “What’s happening here is your visual system is looking at this thing, and you’re trying to discount the chromatic bias of the daylight axis,” says Bevil Conway, a neuroscientist who studies color and vision at Wellesley College. “So people either discount the blue side, in which case they end up seeing white and gold, or discount the gold side, in which case they end up with blue and black.” (Conway sees blue and orange, somehow.)

Thank God that’s over.

Leonard Nimoy
Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock on Star Trek, has died. He was 83.

He passed away this morning in his Bel Air home from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which he announced he had last year. He was hospitalized earlier this week due to complications with the disease.

Despite the loss, his legacy remains, as does one single message:

Was Dan Bilzerian’s Snapchat Account Suspended?

Snapchat

Yesterday we talked about the exciting news that Dan Bilzerian “The King of Instagram” had extended his fiefdom to Snapchat with a video of both a gun and Lindsey Pelas in his bed. Great news, right?

Unfortunately things went downhill quickly as that Snapchat story has since been removed. Sites like BusinessInsider are claiming it’s because his account was suspended.

Other than a blanket community policy from Snapchat which expressly bans “pornography,” we can find no evidence that his account was actually suspended, which leads us to believe that the videos were intentionally removed. Why? We don’t care. We’re just hoping that means Dan’s still able to post more similar content to his story in the future.

The good news is that both Dan and Lindsey got right back to it on his Instagram account with this photo from his private jet.

Yesterday news stations faced an ultimate low when a story about two llamas running wild in Arizona went viral. Granted, it was hilarious, but really Arizona, is there nothing else to talk about?!

Anyways, #LlamaDrama took the Twitter world by storm – similar to how the actual llamas took Arizona by storm – and a slew of entertaining memes were born. Check out our favorites below, and beware of the wandering llama.

Jealous Student Sent Us N00DZ Of A University’s Presidents Daughter, Allegedly

Earlier this morning, a seriously vengeful woman began sending us naked photos of the daughter of the President of a prestigious, well-known school in the midwest. Going only by the name “Kate,” she alleged that this woman had “probably” been sleeping with her boyfriend. Obviously the only way to get even is to email a blog like ours so that we can slut shame her. Unfortunately for Kate, that’s not going to happen.

But here’s what will happen: we will share the email conversation with you, making sure to censor all the images and names.

And since I know you’re curious, we have done our own independent research and can confirm that the person in the photos is in fact who “Kate” says she is.

Now that we’ve laid down the ground rules, here’s our email conversation:

For the record, we receive a lot of crazy emails, but as an unofficial policy I usually never respond to people who BCC me with nude photos and are unable to type coherent sentences. But today’s a Friday and I’m still a little drunk so I decided to see what the hell she was talking about.

So yeah that’s the story about the one time we learned the definition of a woman scorned.

Tröegs Brewing’s HopBack Amber Ale Is What’s On Tap

amber ale review craft beer

Every craft beer drinker has their favorite breweries; breweries that seem to brew beers that fit our pallet perfectly. For me, this week’s beer review comes from a brewery located in my home state, PA, and one who seems to nail any beer they produce. This weekend Tröegs HopBack Amber Ale is What’s on Tap!

Producing beer in the middle of Pennsylvania and within a stone’s throw from Hersey, PA, Tröegs is a brewery that is rapidly gaining more and more loyal drinkers. From their Mad Elf winter seasonal to their sough after Nugget Nectar, Tröegs’ seasonals are ridiculously good. But their year-round HopBack is a great brew that I can drink anytime.

What I love about HopBack is there is nothing hidden in it. Meaning the aroma and taste are true to the brew. On the nose HopBack is full of grainy malts, citrusy hops, and a touch of sweetness and true to form, each sip is filled with those same notes. The only real difference is there is a touch of sweetness interspersed with a nice bitterness on the backend. To say this brew is high drinkable would be an understatement.

Given this brews full flavor of the malt hop combination and the lasting bitterness I recommend any dish with bold flavors. This weekend I am grilling a flank steak that has been marinated in HopBack for almost 12 hours. I am going to use a sweet and spicy sauce for the steak when it is finished but the meat and beer will be the perfect pair.

Cheers!

Tasting Notes

Deep amber in color under a huge creamy head. HopBack Amber Ales aroma is very apparent, bold and spicy with a slight floral character. Balanced with caramel malt, this well-rounded amber ale has an up-front floral spice that builds with a flush of sweetness.

Leonard Nimoy’s Last Twitter and More at The Tweet Hereafter…

Leonard Nimoy Last Tweet i

Leonard Nimoy is dead, but he went out as both a sci-fi legend and a giant of Twitter, courtesy of an amazing last Tweet that was incredibly touching. We know that Leonard Nimoy knew that he was dying. Maybe that gave him an unfair advantage, but he still went out with a lot of style. Check it out…

Leonard Nimoy Last Tweet

Now we’re kind of sad that the official Nimoy Twitter account is updating with tributes instead of leaving that standing. They should at least put that at the top.

Anyway, Nimoy’s final Twittering also puts him at the top of the dead folks immortalized at TheTweetHereafter. Yes, it’s what you’re hoping that site name means–a collection of final Twitter moments from dead people. It’s a great idea that can get you wasting several hours of your own life.

For example, check out the last Twitter from Tim Samaras, the host of the Discovery Channel show Storm Chasers who was about to get too close to a tornado…

Tim Samaras Last Tweet

And here’s the last happy thought of Reeva Steenkamp, soon to be shot by boyfriend Oscar Pistorius…

It’s a pretty amazing collection of final thoughts, and maybe with a few YOLOs tossed in the mix. Take a look, and appreciate how there’s now something else that you’re expected to be good at before you die…

Anthony Mason, RIP: Knicks NBA Legend Passes Away at the Age of 48 [VIDEO]

Anthony Mason

Anthony Mason helped to make the Knicks great in the mid-90s, and we’ve lost him way too soon after his sudden death today at the age of 48. That’s after the NBA legend suffered a massive heart attack earlier this month. [photo: Allsport/Getty]

Actually, a lot of cities are going to be mourning Mason as a former player today. He was with six different teams during his 13 seasons in the NBA–but that was a hell of a stint with the Knicks. Pat Riley saved Mason from a wandering career by bringing him to NYC, where Mason joined up with Charles Oakley and Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley to form one of the scariest front lines in the NBA.

It was kind of a shock when the Knicks gave up on Mason in 1996. He ended up in Charlotte, but eventually reunited with Riley in Miami. Mason wan’t shy about expressing his disappointment when he didn’t feel appreciated–but he was also great with the fans. Here’s a video that’ll give you an idea of how Mason didn’t let his seasons as a superstar keep him from being a regular guy, too. We’re going to miss seeing him at the occasional Knicks game…

Karolina Kurkova: 22 Hottest Photos On The Internet

Karolina Kurkova 22

Karolina Kurkova is celebrating another birthday–that being February 28th–that gets her even further into her thirties. She doesn’t seem to know that she’s getting any older, though. The built blonde helped to launch the entire Victoria’s Secret Angels franchise, and has only gone on to become one of the biggest glamour models around.

Karolina didn’t have any problems stealing the Fashion Rocks red carpet last year. The 5’11” beauty is also a regular presence in any roundup of sexy Czech beauties. Also, sadly, she’s one of fashion’s most amazing MILFs, but that’s just a reminder that she’s kind of off the market.

Karolina is still very forthcoming in sharing her hottest pics via social media. Stay on top of Karolina (so to speak), because she’s only going to keep adding to the hottest Karolina Kurkova photos on the internet…

New Movie Trailers: Guilty Pleasure of ‘Superfast!’ And More [VIDEOS]

Superfast! Trailer

It’s time to look at upcoming movies, because there sure isn’t much to get excited about at the multiplexes this week. Focus is a fizzle of a con film, and The Lazarus Effect is the umpteenth revisiting of a dopey something-else-came-back-from-the-dead plot. Also, Donald Glover gets killed off really early. SPOILER!

Fifty Shades of Grey might own the weekend again, even as the audience drops off dramatically. The good news is that we’ve got plenty of new films coming in–although we’re not too proud of our favorite trailer that we saw this week…

Superfast!

The idiots who gave you the useless parodies of Meet the Spartans and The Starving Games are back–but we laughed at least five times during this trailer, which is more than we laughed during all of Meet the Spartans and The Starving Games. The giant taco above was one of those moments, though, so you might question our enthusiasm for the idea of parodying the Fast/Furious movies. At least we can take comfort in knowing this is a cast of unknowns, so most actors know to run from these things…

Insurgent

Maybe it’s really called Insurgent: Divergent, or Divergent: Insurgent, or Insurgent: One of Those Divergent Movies. We’re not sure, but here’s the final trailer, and they’re just giving up and selling it as a superhero movie. …

Nightlight

Here’s an upcoming R-rated horror movie from Lionsgate, and we didn’t really think we’d ever get excited over another handheld shakeycam movie, but this one looks pretty promising. We’d go see this tale of misadventuring teens in a multiplex. Also, bonus points for making the typography bounce around, too. That was disconcerting…

While We’re Young

It wasn’t that long ago that Ben Stiller was still young enough to be pursuing his dreams in Walter Mitty. Now he’s doing another somber indie turn where he’s an aging documentary filmmaker who’s feeling old because of young rival Adam Driver. We’re still a little confused, because the younger characters act more like the New Age types in NYC who are all safely into their sixties–and still into the ’60s…

Love & Mercy

And speaking of the ’60s, here’s something for the music geeks out there who know that the Beach Boys were just as important (and spectacularly screwed up) as The Beatles and The Stones during that turbulent decade. Paul Dano looks really amazing as the emotionally-addled Brian Wilson, who went nicely nuts while leading the Beach Boys through an era of lovable pop hits. This movie looks at his mental breakdown, and tries to give us a breakdown by replacing Dano with John Cusack to play an older Brian later in the movie. We’re not sure that’s working…

Ronda Rousey Cat Zingano Sexy Staredown GIF

Ronda Rousey goes up against Cat Zingano in tonight’s epic WMMA bout for the UFC–and it’s too early to tell you who’ll win. We can report, however, that plenty of guys won with the epic sexy staredown between these two beauties. It’s pretty much up there with the war of words that erupted between Ronda Rousey and Octagon ring card girl Arianny Celeste. Except that we know Ronda and Cat will still be brawling later on.

Take a look for yourself, and expect us to update later on tonight with an actual GIF of the fight–which hopefully won’t be too short and sweet….

SNL Highlight: That ISIS Army Parody Commercial, So To Speak… [VIDEO]

SNL Highlight ISIS ad

Saturday Night Live returned with host Dakota Johnson and musical guests the Alabama Shakes after a long absence, and the writers must’ve forgotten they had to write a show. Last night’s episode was generally a cure for laughter. The pre-taped closing sketch should really go down in history as one of SNL’s worst moments. A lot of viewers probably thought the show had wrapped early and their NBC affiliate had already started running some crappy local product.

Fortunately, SNL also stumbled into some distracting controversy with a parody of the Army’s Father/Daughter ad, where a proud dad drops off his kid to begin her life in the military–except this time, she’s being dropped off to join ISIS so she can burn children alive. We guess the controversy is that some people think SNL was equating the Army with ISIS to make some kind of big political point. It’s kind of obvious that nobody at SNL gave much thought to anything this week.

Anyway, the real SNL highlight was the Alabama Shakes getting back to sounding like the complex band they were back in 2011. The past few years have been disappointing, but they were great last night in their second SNL appearance. We’re stuck with this, instead. But you can get that new song by the Alabama Shakes….

Rousey v Zingano Whole Fight GIF

Ronda Rousey went up against Cat Zingano last night to defend her UFC title, and we think the sexy staredown lasted longer than the fight. It took the brawling blonde about 12 whole seconds to get Cat to submit via a straight armlock. That was after Zingano tried to lead the fight with a flying knee that didn’t work out real well. Ronda caught Cat in midflight, got her down to the floor, and then got that armlock down in a move that was sheer poetry in motion.

We know “poetry in motion” is kind of a stupid term, but we were trying to type all that in less time than it took Ronda Rousey to defend her title. We’re pretty sure it took us a lot more effort, too. It’s early on a Sunday, you know. Anyway, check out this GIF that crams in the action twice…

Hottest Instagram Photos Kristy Jones

Hey, it’s snowing outside of the COED offices–and we bet you won’t find any of the sexiest models of Instagram out there, either. That’s because they all seem to be finding some very warm climes. Just consider how comfortable Kirsty Jones is looking above.

She’s not the only bikini’d beauty who’s brightened the daily COED Instagram feed, though. We have all kinds of bountiful babes brightening the week–including Kindly Myers, Sarah Sandin, Sara Jean UnderwoodGalina Dubenenko, and more. We’ve also been able to ogle some beauties of Victoria’s Secret, from Alessandra Ambrosio looking professional to Candice Swanepoel and Lily Aldridge cavorting as part of this week’s VS Swim Special. Lady Gaga Vince Vaughn Taylor Kinney Polar Plunge Photos

Lady Gaga and Vince Vaughn jumped into Lake Michigan today because celebrities never make enough money so that they can just pay people to do horrible things for charity–although Vince Vaughn actually seems to be behind the whole Polar Plunge fundraiser for the Special Olympics.

It’s a hometown event for Chicago-native Vaughn, and then Taylor Kinney, David Eigenberg, and Jon Seda joined in because they all star in Chicago Fire, and the actors want to give back to their filming location. Lady Gaga, of course, is now engaged to Taylor Kinney. That’s the two of them above, and we think it’s a picture of Lady Gaga wishing that Taylor Kinney had waited until April to propose, because then she’d have an excuse to skip this thing.

Anyway, here are fabulous photos of the rich and famous being really uncomfortable in frigid weather. That’s nice to see–especially after ogling the bikini models of this week’s COED Instagram Feed. Check it out, and then maybe the models, and some other Polar Bear Club hotties, too…

Alexandra Breckenridge Reanimates Us On ‘The Walking Dead’ [PHOTOS]

Alexandra Breckenridge Hot Photos Walking Dead Samantha

Alexandra Breckenridge makes her Walking Dead debut tonight, and we hope that means that she’ll be around for a while. After all, the gang of anti-walker warriors are wandering into the town of Alexandria tonight. The place is practically named after our favorite redhead. Or blonde, or sometimes brunette. Alexandra has a lot of different looks.

She’s worked those looks in all kinds of great genre productions, too. We’ve been awed by Alexandria as one of the hot babes of American Horror Story and the vampish vixens of True Blood. We’re not sure why this haunting beauty keeps landing in creepy territory, but we’re not complaining. Maybe there’ll be room for her in an upcoming season of Bates Motel, too.

We’re assuming she’ll need the work. We’ll be really happy if Alexandra is actually a Walking Dead regular now, but we all know what really happens when Rick Grimes and Lauren Cohan‘s Maggie Greene arrive at a perfectly functioning town. They screw it all up for everybody. Take a look at these Alexandra Breckenridge pics, though, and see why we’d be happy if Alexandra outlived them all…

WATCH: The Alabama Shakes Save ‘Saturday Night Live’ [VIDEO]

Alabama Shakes Saturday Night Live Video SNL

The Alabama Shakes were easily the best thing on Saturday Night Live this weekend. They were probably the best thing about this frigid East Coast weekend, in general–and we finally have legit video of the band showcasing two new songs from the upcoming Sound & Color.

It’s all very exciting, too–especially for longtime fans who were a little baffled to see the Shakes getting a little too simple with their debut with Boys & Girls. The record shot them to stardom pretty quickly, but Boys & Girls sounded more like a band playing the simplest songs by The Alabama Shakes. It was a smart move, though. The debut could’ve just as easily sounded like Steely Dan, but the simpler and soulful rootsy songs sure got people excited.

We weren’t as happy to see frontwoman Brittany Howard pandering to the hipster crowds by striking a calculated backwoods pose. We still aren’t going to argue with success. Especially now that the Shakes are ready to show off all of their strengths–as you’ll see with this first video of the band doing “Don’t Wanna Fight.” You’ll have to sit through a commercial first, but that’s not nearly as painful as sitting through Saturday Night Live to see the Alabama Shakes…

And here’s “Gimme All Your Love,” which indicates the Alabama Shakes will always be able to fit into the jam scene if things don’t work out for them as soulful pop wizards…
