A Sitdown With Budweiser ‘Lost Dog’ Executive Creative Director Mike Byrne

Budweiser Lost Puppy Super Bowl Commercial-40

During last year’s Super Bowl, Budweiser debuted their ad “Puppy Love;” the story of an unlikely friendship between an adorable yellow Labrador and the beer brand’s famous Clydesdales. This year they’re back with another installment called “Lost Dog,” following the same puppy and his peculiar friendship with massive horses.

The one difference? This time around we were on set with the Budweiser team and their group of eager animals. In between takes, we sat down with Executive Creative Director Mike Byrne – the mastermind behind the brand’s popular Super Bowl ads – to talk friendship, “Puppy Love” success, and what it’s like to advertise during the biggest game of the year.

budweiser

COED: When the creative came out for the first spot “Brotherhood,” was there any idea that this was potentially going to become a series?

Mike Byrne: The only thing that was episodic – maybe – was the idea of unlikely friendships. “Brotherhood” was the unlikely friendship between the rancher and the horse.  I mean, people have relationships with horses obviously, but in that spot the horse breaks away from the parade and remembers the rancher. So that was an unlikely outcome, scenario. And then the following year, the unlikely friendship was this puppy and this horse develop this bond… which is not too far off from the truth because you always see dogs around stables and stuff like that.  We just sort of amplify that relationship further.  So the camaraderie and friendship has been the staple for the brand, and I think that’s obviously true. What does that have to do with Budweiser?  Well, you drink Budweiser with your friends.  You open up about things that you want to do and accomplish.  It’s a very different thing if I say to you, “lets go have a beer, let’s go have a Bud.”  You know that we are going to talk about stuff as opposed to say “hey, let’s get a coffee.” That seems almost more serious. You know, and a Bud is like, “hey, you’re my buddy, let’s hash sh*t out.”  So camaraderie and friendship is a fundamental part of the brand. I mean, that’s why you get together and drink, and be social, and those things.

So then last year we did the puppy thing. “Brotherhood” did really well in the Super Bowl and then last year “Puppy Love” did extraordinarily well…

COED: Did you see that coming?

Mike Byrne: No, didn’t see that coming at all.  We knew we had a good story.  What’s been successful for the Super Bowl, and obviously in Hollywood, is a strong narrative – a good beginning, good middle, good end.  Both years had a surprise ending, this year it’s the same thing.  This year is more about, your really good friends are the people you can count on; You call up at 2 AM and say “Hey man, I’m in this situation” and they’ll hop out of bed and come help you out. And I think this year is about the lengths that we will go to be there for our friends.

COED:  Do you think that’s why these commercials have been so successful?  That the themes are so in-line with the brand?

Mike Byrne: Yeah, and it’s a different way to talk about friendship.  We’re using animals and the nice thing about using animals is they don’t talk. When you talk to dog lovers or animal lovers for that matter… I always tell people that you can have the worst day in the world and then you come home and your dog is psyched to see you. It’s not upset that you messed up or that you had a bad…

Budweiser has always used the Clydesdales and the Clydesdales always represent the brand.  They’re stoic, they’re strong, they’re workhorses, they’re unapologetic in the sense that they just do what they do and they’re not trying to be anything other than that, and that is a lot like the brand. We brew quality beer and we’re not trying to be anything other than that.  We don’t go with the fads, the trends.  [We’ve] been brewing the same way for 126 years. So there’s just a real timelessness to the brand, to the authenticity of that, to the Clydesdales, to friendship. And I think people like to be reminded of what true friendship is and I think Budweiser plays a big role in that.

budweiser-puppy-love-hed-2014

COED: At what point did you know there was going to be a follow-up for “Puppy Love?”

Mike Byrne: Probably seven days before the Super Bowl, when they launched the spot on YouTube and it just started accruing views after views. We were laughing going, “awe man, how do you follow that up?” And then you go, well what were the ingredients in it that worked?  People go, it was so easy, you used a puppy… Well it doesn’t make it less difficult to write a good story.  In fact it makes it a little harder because it’s a puppy and we’re this big masculine beer brand. So how do you make that puppy somehow… how do you bring masculinity to that puppy.  This year we said, what did we learn from last year, what works, how do we create a story that can outdo last year, but has some of the same ingredients. So we didn’t get rid of the puppy. It’s like, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

COED: From a creative standpoint, do you approach a Super Bowl commercial any differently than you would a regular commercial?

Mike Byrne: Absolutely. I guess the fact of the matter is it’s the Super Bowl of football, but it’s the Super Bowl of advertising. Because, you have 170 million people plus watching… they actually watch the commercials. So you’re not going to be this forgotten thing stuck between a Doritos and a Pepsi ad, you’re going up against everyone else trying to get everybody’s attention. So you have to break through.  And, probably, that’s part of the impetus with the puppy again, because we know that was break through. Also that got so much adulation; why not give America back what it wants?  Even in the comments last year, people were already wondering what we are going to do this year.  And I think bringing the puppy back is not going to make anybody upset.

But you absolutely go into the Super Bowl differently.  There is good and bad to that because I think a lot of brands go “well alright, we’re gonna have stuff blow-up and we’re gonna do something totally crazy”… I think what we try to do is tell a great story, make sure the brand is at the center of the story, and try to make that narrative as authentic and emotional as possible. And really think through every scene, really think through the narrative arc.  I think the biggest mistake with ads, with films is that it’s always hard to close it out. And I think we’ve been successful having a good narrative arc… good beginning, good middle, good end, with little moments in between that kind of keep you wanting more.

Lost Dog Budweiser

COED: Do you think “Lost Dog” is going to deliver all that?

Mike Byrne: I hope so (laughing)… I mean on paper yes, but now it comes down to going out and filming it… you’re dealing with animals, you’re dealing with puppies, they don’t always do what you want them to do. What you have on paper is not always what you… you’re dealing with weather, you’re dealing with location, all those intangibles.  But it’s the same crew of people we’ve done the last two Super Bowl spots with, we all know each other, we all have high expectations, it’s massively collaborative. There is no “the director is over there, the agency is over here and the clients’ over there”… these are very unusual productions.

Budweiser “Lost Dog” Super Bowl Commercial: Behind the Scenes [EXCLUSIVE]

Bud Lost Dog

Last year Budweiser struck Super Bowl commercial gold with their adorable ad “Puppy Love,” which told the story of an unlikely friendship between a yellow Labrador and the world famous Budweiser Clydesdales. This year the King of Beers is sticking to the subject of their original success: camaraderie. In their latest installment – the first being their 2013 ad “Brotherhood” – “Lost Dog” follows our favorite yellow lab and his treacherous journey home after jumping out of his owner’s truck.  The pup ultimately finds his way back to the farm, but not before facing a few wild hardships and needing the help of his massive, furry friends.

“This year is more about [the fact that] your really good friends are the friends you can count on,” explains Mike Byrne, Executive Creative Director of Anomaly, the company behind all three ads. “[The friends that] you call up at 2am and say, ‘Hey man, I’m in this situation,’ and they’ll hop out of bed and come help you out. This year is about the lengths we go to [to] be there for our friends.”

The three-day shoot took place on a horse ranch in Los Alamos, California, and we were lucky enough to hang out on set for a day with the Budweiser crew, which included director Jake Scott and his clan of golden labs. Hard day at work, right? Check out behind the scenes photos and the company’s ad below. Needless to say, Budweiser wins again.

Check out our exclusive interview with Mike Byrne here.

It was amazing to see firsthand how well-trained the Clydesdale are. They hit their marks like pros every time.

Director Paul Feig, the man behind the Ghostbusters reboot, announced his all-female cast on Twitter last night:

Joining arms with Bridesmaids stars Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, and SNL standouts Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, Feig also announced that his new film will hit theaters July 22, 2016. While the drop seems lightyears away, at least we can rest assured knowing that these ladies will do the original clan justice. And honestly, we don’t hate that we’d have to call Kristen Wiig in the event of a poltergeist attack.

Resident Evil Remastered

Remember the PSP? There’s a new game out for Sony’s spunky little system that wilted in the shadow of Nintendo’s DS. Compatible with the PlayStation Vita, Brandish: The Dark Revenant brings its Deadly Towers-Dragon Quest-like stylings to the forgotten handheld, managing to become one of the best games released on that system.

Speaking of best-evers, the fondly remembered Resident Evil has clawed its way out of the ground like any respectable spawn of the undead should, powering its way onto current-gen consoles in its most attractive and smoothly-playing edition yet. Sticking with the throwback theme, the Xbox One-exclusive sports game #IDARB brings back memories of Double Dribble and Super Soccer.

Brandish

Brandish: The Dark Revenant

(PSP, $20, Teen)

RPGs don’t come more basic or pure than Brandish: The Dark Revenant. Bizarrely made for the PSP, which hasn’t had a new game on the mainstream market for years, the swords-and-chain-mail dungeon crawler has you seeking out treasure by moving one space at a time along a grid-like layout, collecting weapons and items and upgrading your attributes as you grind along. After just a few minutes you’ll be able to tell whether the intentionally creaky design charms or repels you. Expect plenty of grinding, frustrating encounters with overpowered enemies and obtuse maps that will make you tear your hair out along the way to escape.

If you find yourself in the former camp, you’ll find your dedication and intensity well rewarded. The game is steeped in adoring references to the best of its predecessors, and its clunky movement and inventory system become an acquired taste. There’s a highly-recommended tutorial mode that helps familiarize you with the grating madness that you’re in for, and it does a solid job of hooking you into the main game. Stubborn and unforgiving, Brandish makes you sweat for every inch of progress, which makes it all the more lovable.

Resident Evil HD Remaster

(Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, $20, Mature)

Capcom has remade its pioneering 1996 survival horror escapade countless times since 1996, so it figures that all that practice is getting the publisher and its developers pretty adept at tweaking, optimizing and building upon the foundation. That’s why it comes as no surprise that the latest remake is the hands-down best version of the game to date. Smoothed out controls, stunning visuals and numerous gameplay tweaks make this not only the best version of Resident Evil, but arguably the best in the entire series.

The tight, restrictive mansion-set locale puts the emphasis on steady exploration and close-quarters combat and evasion. The game still has the ability to shock you and fill you with dread, even if you’ve played through it countless times. The puzzles and save system remain charmingly antiquated, but are more fun to tackle than ever thanks to the removal of choppy animations and tank-style controls. If you miss some of those maddening aspects of the original game, you can revert back to them in the main menu. Old-school classics rarely stand up to your memories of them, but Capcom has seen to it that Resident Evil has improved with age.

IDARB

#IDARB

(Xbox One, $10, Everyone)

Oozing with 1980s-style charm, the annoyingly titled #IDARB takes its hashtag and runs, making for a sports/platforming hybrid that plays like a made-up-on-the-fly sport you played at third grade recess. The mixture of basketball and hockey makes for addictive multiplayer. The adorable 8-bit visuals make it seem as though you are playing some sort of newly-rediscovered classic from the past — something you and your brother used to punch each other in the arm over.

Customization is king. You can draw your own players, use your oddball creations to form distinctive teams, and even compose your own fight songs. Offline and online multiplayer are there to let you compare your skills with all comers. As fun as the game may be, there is no reason to spend good money on it. As long as you are an Xbox Live Gold member, you’ll be able to download it for free next month. Since a Gold membership is replied to play online anyway, those who pay full price won’t get much out of the madness #IDARB provides.

The Real A.A. Ron Rodgers Appears Key And Peele Super Bowl Special

AA Ron Rodgers

Key and Peele have been gearing up for their Super Bowl Special (Friday at 10 PM EST) but no one thought that they’d be able to convince Aaron Rodgers to appear on an all-new version of the East/West Bowl names skit.

But guess what. They did. And Aaron brought along a few more of his NFL buddies.

Truthfully I hope they retire this skit because it’s just getting to be ridiculous. But if you didn’t laugh at Creme de la Creme we’re not friends.

WATCH: The Best Super Bowl Halftime Shows of All Time

Beyonce Half Time Show
The Super Bowl is known for a few things: bad calls, awesome commercials, and their kickass/total fail halftime shows. With only a few more days until Katy Perry takes center stage on the field, we’re going over the best performances from the years past. See if your favorite made the list. Katy, we’re pulling for you (for obvious reasons).

Aerosmith, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige – Super Bowl XXXV

In the days when boy bands were taking over the world, Britney Spears was still hot, and Steven Tyler hadn’t yet felt the effects of his drugged out 1980’s reign, the 2001 show was one to remember.

Prince – Super Bowl XLI

The rockstar has enough personality to take on the show totally alone and thats just what he did, better than most all-star music groups. Rock on, Prince. And that sweet purple guitar.

Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers – Super Bowl XLVIII

We’re man enough to admit Bruno Mars has some catchy songs – even though we may have heard them while our girlfriends had control of the radio – but seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers on stage was the real part of that performance. It goes without saying that Anthony Kiedis is the man, but we’ll say it anyways: Anthony Kiedis is the man.

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake – Super Bowl XXXVIII

The wardrobe malfunction seen round the world. Who could forget the time JT ripped off Janet Jackson’s top? Sure, the performance itself was impressive sans the nipple flash, but the incident was bound to take away any memory of what Justin Timberlake was singing. Those three X’s definitely weren’t a coincidence.

Beyonce – Super Bowl XLVII

Let’s face it: Beyonce is a star. And hot – really, really hot. She never fails to disappoint, so why would she now?

Paul McCartney – Super Bowl XXXIX

“Live and Let Die” and “Hey Jude?” Sold.

U2 – Super Bowl XXXVI

Only five months after 9/11, U2 put on an emotional show that made it hard to settle back in and watch the game. While singing “Where The Streets Have No Name,” a scrolling list of 9/11 victims went on behind him. Upon finishing the song, Bono opened up his jacket to reveal its lining of stars and stripes.

Weather Man Map Malfunction Blooper Video

Here’s a break from blizzard news–it’s 2,960 degrees in Cave Creek, Arizona! Or at least that’s what it said on the weather map on the morning broadcast for Phoenix, Arizona’s  FOX 10. Check out how weatherman Cory McCloskey keeps his cool during the malfunction and just plays along with the Apocalypse. That’s our kind of AccuWeather.

The only way this could be better was if Cory was doing some kind of cosplay as Satan, or made up some crap about nuclear detonations. Although the average age of his audience is probably 94 years old, so that would’ve probably caused a heat wave of heart attacks…

Candice Swanepoel Mother Denim Sexy Photo Shoot

Candice Swanepoel Mother Denim Photos

Candice Swanepoel looks like a ’70s flashback in her amazing new pics for Mother Jeans. Not that the 26-year-old supermodel knows much about the ’70s. That’s also a reminder that Candice Swanepoel is too young to be a mother yet herself, and we’re grateful for that–not that we have anything against supermodel MILFs. They’re just less likely to be single, and you know how moralistic we are over here when it comes to our dream girls.

Anyway, these Mother pics–which feature Candice’s own fashion line–are desperately needed after we’ve spent most of the week staring at Victoria’s Secret models wearing football pads for the Super Bowl. That’s given us very strange feelings. We’re a lot happier to see Candice baring her bod in denim, and even happier to say that we’ve added some hot new bikini pics from Victoria’s Secret Swim.

We guess the company felt bad about only giving us football photos for a while. Not that we’re complaining about beauties like Lily Aldridge, Adriana Lima, and Doutzen Kroes in any form. We’re still going to enjoy Candice’s fine form right now, as part of our training for Super Bowl Sunday…

Richard Sherman Faces Major Decision For Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl XLIX Media Day Fueled by Gatorade

One of the biggest games of Richard Sherman’s career is coming up on Sunday night when the Seattle Seahawks play in Super Bowl XLIX. However, there is a major decision that is facing Sherman that could end up costing him a chance to play in the game. Sherman’s girlfriend Ashley Moss is scheduled to give birth to their son in the next week. If she goes into labor on Sunday, Sherman will have to decide whether or not it is more important to see his son be born or playing in the game. [lead image via Elsa / Getty Sports]

Sherman brought Ross with him to Glendale, the site of Sunday’s game, just in case to make sure that if Ross had the baby before Sunday, he would be there to see it. This is a huge decision though for Sherman and one that seems very logical on the surface of what to do. Sherman should be with his girlfriend if she goes into labor just in case anything goes wrong. It is just a game after all.

This is something that every Seahawks fan doesn’t want to see happen especially with the chance that the team wins their second straight Super Bowl. However, it is very possible as well that Sherman has to leave the game early Sunday due to his injured elbow. It is going to be a very exciting and stressful next few days for Sherman wondering what is going to happen next.

Dollar Beer Night At Cincinnati Cyclones Game Looked Awesome

Dollar Beer Night

The Cincinnati Cyclones know that if you want to ensure people show up to your minor league hockey game, offer them dollar beers. Along with somewhat questionable mascots (a la the Adirondack Flames), cheep brews are a surefire way to get butts in seats. To their credit, hockey fans aren’t really the pickiest of drinkers.

It’s also a pretty outstanding way to get the crowd involved with social media. Take for example these bros just doing their thing and making a beer pyramid. We did the quick math and saw that believe it or not, there are over 150 empties represented in this photo. I count only four bros. You do the math.

Word is that Wade Boggs will be singing the next national anthem for the Cyclones next Dollar Beer Night.

Interview With Bud Light’s Real Life Pac Man From Super Bowl Ad “Coin”

0

Riley Smith is a completely normal guy who loves to party and drink Bud Light as much as you or me. The only difference is that he’s in the Super Bowl, and you’re not.

Well technically Riley’s in a Super Bowl commercial, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that his face is going to be seen by the 110 million+ people watching the game on TV, and the millions of others who’ve already viewed his “Real Life Pac Man” commercial for Bud Light’s #UpForWhatever campaign.

He’s kind of famous, so we were excited to learn that Riley wanted to stop by our office to shoot some beer pong and walk us through exactly how he became a life-sized Pac Man. Here’s what he had to say about the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We can’t say enough great things about Riley. As you can see in the video, he’s genuinely stoked on the whole thing which makes the whole campaign even cooler. This guy isn’t a SAG actor. He’s not a paid spokesman. He’s just a guy who’s #UpForWhatever.

Unfortunately in the interest of fair and balanced reporting, we have to divulge that his beer pong game needs a little work. We can’t tell if he lost because he’s been playing too many old school arcade games or if we’re just that good.

Russian Dating FAILs

We can’t blame people for always trying to look their best, but sometimes “sexy” doesn’t necessarily mean “best.”

Let the professionals–the Victoria’s Secret models, the hottest chicks of Instagram, etc.–bring “sexy” back. Otherwise you could end up rocking duck face or, like, something a lot more traumatizing for people viewing your dating site profile page.

So with that being said, here’s a bunch of Russian people ignoring that advice. Don’t blame us if they can’t understand English.

Comcast Plays Hilarious Prank on Unsatisfied Customer

Unsatisfied Comcast Customer
Lisa and Ricardo Brown from Spokane, Washington were the target of a hilarious Comcast prank earlier this month after trying to cancel their account. Lisa Brown called the company’s information line requesting the cancellation, and was instantly transferred to a retention specialist who (of course) tried talking her out of her poor decision and into another two-year contract. After a few f-bombs were exchanged (we assume), Lisa was able to overcome the irritating obstacle and cancel her account, but the couple quickly realized Comcast would have the last word when they received their next bill addressed to “Asshole Brown.” After the prank went public, the company offered the couple a full refund for two years of cable service. What a bunch of clever assholes.

2015 Super Bowl Ticket Prices Explode: Most Expensive Ever

Super Bowl Tickets 2015

As of 2:15 PM today, it will cost you $9,780.25 per ticket just to get in the door at Super Bowl XLIX, making it the most expensive Super Bowl ticket in the history of Super Bowl tickets by 2X. Why are ticket prices skyrocketing to such insane heights in 2015?  Broker Jimmy Williams from International Events says it’s based on three factors that have ultimately created a perfect storm:

• To start with, brokers severely underestimated demand and have sold incredibly short based on past Super Bowls in Phoenix. Historically, Phoenix creates a very cheap ticket.

• The second factor is Seattle. In large, Seahawks fans did not travel well in 2014 due to bad weather and initial high hotel and travel fees to NYC.  This year, it’s a two-hour flight to a warm weather destination and the fans are traveling in droves.

• Third: capacity. The University of Phoenix Stadium holds more than 10,000 less seats than last year’s Met Life Stadium.

According to Bloomberg Business, ticket prices have tended to plateau around the $4,000 mark, then decrease closer to game day when last-minute buyers try to snag leftovers. At this rate, the verdict is still out on whether or not that’s likely to happen this year. The chances of last-minute tickets staying at the astronomical price of nearly $10,000 seems low, but then again, so do the chances of ticket prices getting that high to begin with. You’re better off nursing your Arizona FOMO in the comfort of your own home, with your newly bought 90” TV (saving nearly 10K does wonders) and a shitload of beer. Things could definitely be worse.

Super Bowl Rings: Photos Of Every Ring Throughout History

Super Bowl Rings, superbowl rings photos

Super Bowl Rings are among the most valuable pieces of sports memorabilia in the world, and most of that has nothing to do with the precious gems and metals they’re made of. The rings usually include the team name, team logo, and Super Bowl number (usually indicated in Roman numerals).

These rings represent all the hard work these players put in both inside and outside the lines and you’ll be hard pressed to find players willing to part with them. Of course, sometimes these men go through hard times and are forced to sell them, so we actually know the price of the average Super Bowl ring.
