The Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at the University of Louisiana has been suspended due to allegations of hazing.

According to the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, the university’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter was found guilty of hazing.

As a result, University of Lousiana officials placed the fraternity under a four-year disciplinary suspension, meaning they cannot return to campus until 2022.

Dean of Students Margarita Perez said that while a temporary suspension temporarily restricts the fraternity’s ability to operate on campus, the suspension they’re facing removes them from campus entirely for four years. Perez says the fraternity may appeal the decision.

“They don’t exist on our campus for four years. They have no operations on our campus,” Dean of Students Perez said.

via The Vermilion:

According to documents released by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities placed additional sanctions on Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, including loss of privileges and mandatory “Alcohol Awareness and Decision Making” sessions with the Department of Counseling and Testing.

The documents also include an email sent Sept. 27 from Assistant Director of Student Engagement and Leadership Brandon Palmore to Assistant Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities Brandon Turner regarding allegations against Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. They also included allegations that new members were locked in a small room and couldn’t look active members in the eye.

According to the same report, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities found Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity refused to comply with the investigation.

In addition to the suspension of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, UL’s Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities is investigating the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Sigma Chi fraternity for hazing allegations.

The suspension of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the investigation of Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Chi at the Univesity of Louisiana is the latest major Greek life suspension, expulsion, or overhaul in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State, and Penn State have all suspended fraternities for various reasons.

Fraternities have been suspended or expelled across the nation as Greek life organizations and universities attempt to grapple with the pitfalls of hazing, alcohol and drug abuse, and sexual assault.

Schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State, and Penn State have all suspended or expelled fraternities for various reasons.

Mike Tripus, 65, has been identified as the victim in the Paradise Township municipal building shooting that occurred in the Poconos.

According to reports, Tripus was shot and killed by 72-year-old David Green on Tuesday, November 27, in a deadly shooting at the Monroe County municipal building.

At this time, police are investigating if and/or how Green and Tripus knew each other.

After the shooting, Green was taken into police custody without incident.

What Happened?

65-year-old Mike Tripus was shot and killed by 72-year-old David Green inside of the Paradise Township municipal building on Tuesday, November 27.

At this time, local police say that no motive for the shooting has been determined and that they are currently treating the shooting as a homicide.

Additionally, police said that it wasn’t immediately clear how or whether Green and Tripus knew each other.

According to the Paradise Township phone directory, Tripus was a building code official and sewer enforcement officer.

via ABC 6:

The gunman walked inside the Paradise Township municipal building about 8:20 a.m. and opened fire, according to police and township officials. State and local police rushed to the municipal building in the Pocono Mountains, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Philadelphia, arresting the suspect without incident.

State police haven’t said what motivated the shooting, and it wasn’t immediately clear how or whether Green and Tripus knew each other. “That is something we’re still working on right now,” Trooper David Peters told reporters at the scene.

The victim was a longtime township employee, according to Gary Konrath, chairman of the township’s Board of Supervisors. Konrath said he was not in the building at the time but spoke to the township’s executive secretary, who was. Konrath said she told him the gunman is “not someone they are aware of. No one appears to recognize the individual.”

Paradise Township is located in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, which is otherwise referred to as the Poconos.

The reports of Tripus’ shooting death in the municipal building in Paradise, Pennsylvania is the is just the latest in a string of lockdowns, bomb threats, and shootings that have plagued the United States.

Despite all of the shooting deaths in the country, our nation’s lawmakers have yet to make any significant changes to our laws to better ensure the safety of the population.

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Andrea Dorothy Chan Reyes, a 33-year-old woman wanted for an alleged deadly hit-and-run in the United States, has been found living in Adelaide, South Australia.

What Happened?

According to reports, Chan Reyes disappeared from the Los Angeles, California area back in early 2017, just five days after she allegedly ran over and killed 46-year-old father-of-four Agustin Rodirguez Jr.

At the time of the incident, the Whittier Police Department said that on Monday, January 30, Rodriguez was struck by a car while he was trying to cross Calmada Avenue in Whittier, Los Angeles. The driver, later identified as Chan Reyes, hit him head-on near Ditmar Drive.

Witnesses at the scene say while the first car had stopped to allow Rodriguez to cross, Chan Reyes proceeded to go around that car and then hit Rodriguez.

An international investigation that included the FBI eventually led to Chan Reyes’ discovery in Australia and she now faces extradition to the United States to be brought up on charges.

via ABC:

Documents from the United States District Court allege Ms Chan Reyes was travelling at a “high rate of speed” when she hit the 46-year-old man, who was dragged about 270 metres under her sports car. The court documents stated that she did not stop to help the cyclist, as is required by law, and instead continued driving at an “unsafe speed” on the wrong side of the road.

Later that same day, Ms Chan Reyes took her white Lexus, which had a broken windscreen and damage to the front bumper, headlight and front area of the roof, to a repair shop in California where she told staff she had hit a deer.

She flew to Hong Kong — where she had family ties — five days after the fatal hit-and-run in a move the FBI claimed was “with the intent to avoid prosecution”.

If extradited to the United States of America, Chan Reyes faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run driving resulting in death or serious injury to another person and destroying or concealing evidence.

Chan Reyes is reportedly a United States citizen who was born in the Philippines.

Spotify Releases Live Version ‘Dunno’, One Of The Standouts From Mac Miller’s ‘Swimming’

Despite nearly a quarter of a year passing since the tragic death of 26-year-old Mac Miller, it still feels like something that happened in last night’s nightmare rather than today’s reality.

Gone when you least expected it, Mac Miller — born Malcolm James McCormick — passed away in his home in Studio City, California, on Friday, September 7, due to what was ruled an accidental overdose.

However, despite the fact that it’s been three months since Mac’s passing, his vice grip on the pop cultural zeitgeist has yet to loosen, as new tidbits about and from his life — including music — continue to pour out in the wake of his death.

Spotify has released Mac Miller’s Spotify Singles, a two-track EP that features an acoustic, live-recording of his Swimming hit “Dunno” and a cover of the Grammy-nominated 1974 Billy Preston hit “Nothing From Nothing.”

“Dunno”, one of the many standouts on Miller’s final album Swimming, is considered to be an obvious ode to his ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande, as Miller croons:

We was fuckin’, almost missed my flight
I wasn’t even trippin’, I said it’s all right, yeah
Goddamn, we was hit last night
Wouldn’t you rather get along? Wouldn’t you rather get along?
You was coughin’ when you hit my weed
But I’ve never seen you feel that free
So cute, you wanna be like me
Wouldn’t you rather get along? Wouldn’t you rather get along?

While Mac may be gone from his Earth, his talent shall remain, as it appears his music is going to be far more everlasting than he could have ever imagined.

Rest in peace, Mac. We misss you.

The success and recognition is nothing new for Joyner, who became a viral sensation with his music video for “I’m Not Racist.”

“I never felt like anything was wrong with me other than the fact I was just different and misunderstood,” Lucas wrote on Instagram. “Every school I went to received a IEP, (which is a special folder with all my ‘ADHD’ information) so they can repeat the process all over again. It was basically no different than wearing a sticker on your shirt that said “inmate”. I was judged by other students & even teachers. They spoke to me as if I was stupid and less intelligent than everyone else.

“This project is my big F*CK YOU to any and everybody who never thought I wouldn’t make it this far. My big F*CK YOU to anybody who has ever stood in my way. My big F*CK YOU to anybody who ever sh*tted on me on my way up. That goes to family, friends, enemies, ex girls, teachers, principals, police, judges, or anybody who told me I wouldn’t get here. The kid with “ADHD” did it.”

Ahead of the upcoming album, Lucas has already taken to the internet to share a lead single “I Love.”

Ector County Jail

Samuel Little, a 78-year-old man who was already serving a life sentence at Ector County Jail in Texas, has confessed to allegedly committing 90 murders, making him one of the most prolific serial killers in the nation’s history.

What Happened?

According to a report released earlier this week by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Little — who was already serving a life sentence for beating and strangling three women to death in Los Angeles between 1987 and 1989 — told investigators that he is responsible for the murder of 90 additional people.

At the time of this writing, the FBI says that they currently have evidence of ties to 34 of the murders he claims to have committed.

Little was originally was arrested at a homeless shelter in Kentucky in 2012 and extradited to California to face drug charges. Once in police custody, DNA evidence linked him to the Los Angeles murders.

He was then tried, convicted, sentenced to life in prison, and transferred to Texas in connection with the investigation into another murder.

According to ABC, when Little was interviewed Texas Ranger James Holland (who was accompanied by Department of Justice and FBI officials) last spring, Little began talking and authorities began “unraveling the true extent of his crimes.”

via ABC:

The FBI said it is now working with the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Texas Rangers and dozens of other state and local law enforcement agencies to “to match Little’s confessions with evidence from women who turned up dead in states from California to Florida between 1970 and 2005.”

Little’s life of crime spanned decades, according to the FBI. After dropping out of high school in Ohio, Little “lived a nomadic life” and was first arrested in 1956, according to the FBI. He displayed a “dark, violent streak” in his many crimes, which included shoplifting, fraud, drug charges, solicitation, and breaking and entering, the FBI said.

The FBI is currently “racing to identify as many of his victims as possible and help close these unsolved cases”, as Little is in poor health and will likely die in Texas prison.

The professor entered her office to find her walls covered in swastikas and an anti-Semitic slur “Yid” in bright red spray paint. The NYPD is investigating the incident which occurred in a building that requires an ID card for entrance.

Teachers College president Thomas Bailey wasted no time issuing a statement on the matter.

As you may already have heard, the office of a Teachers College faculty member has been defaced with swastikas.

We unequivocally condemn any expression of hatred, which has no place in our society. We are outraged and horrified by this act of aggression and use of this vile anti-Semitic symbol against a valued member of our community.

Please rest assured that we are working with police to discover the perpetrator of this hateful act. I also want to reaffirm the College’s commitment – and my own – to providing a respectful and welcoming environment for all, and to protecting the safety and dignity of all members of our community.

It is not the first time that Midlarsky has been the target of this kind of vandalism. In 2007, the door to Midlarsky’s office was vandalized with a swastika while anti-Semitic flyers were left in her mailbox.

But while it was not the first incident, Midlarsky admits that this time around the vandalism did get to her.

“I’m usually not a fearful person, but they got me. I’m afraid,” she told the Washington Post. “I was afraid to be alone. I was afraid to be in my office alone.”

Hopefully the perpetrators will be found and Professor Midlarsky can find some sense of peace of mind.

Natasha Patronsky, a 24-year-old Spanish teacher at Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama, has been charged with engaging in a sexual act with a student under the age of 19.

According to reports from the Montgomery Police Department, Patronsky — who was a first-year teacher at the school — voluntarily turned herself into the police department on Wednesday, November 28.

Capt. Regina Duckett said in a news release that a sexual assault investigation into Patronsky was opened on Friday, November 16. Police say they believe that the alleged incident happened on Thursday, November 8.

After she turned herself in, Patronsky was transferred to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where she is being held under a $7,500 bond.

Patronsky resigned on Nov. 20. One week later, on Tuesday, Nov. 27, Salter said he and Superintendent Ann Roy Moore were unaware of any incident or investigation and would not provide any information regarding employees on administrative leave.

“We have not received any report concerning this event. If there is an investigation and we are contacted, we will certainly cooperate fully,” Salter wrote.

The same day, Lanier Principal Antonio Williams said he was aware of the investigation. After the arrest Wednesday, MPS released a statement from Moore.

“We are shocked to hear of this allegation,” Moore said in the release. “We support law enforcement in their work to get to the truth in this matter. Any person found guilty of putting a child’s safety at risk, should be punished to the full extent of the law.”

If found guilty, Patronsky faces no less than two years and no more than 20 years in prison.

As for why there has been such a significant increase in instances of teachers having sexual relationships with students, researchers believe that technology is to blame.

According to a report from the Texas Education Association, smartphones make easy for teachers to privately text and talk with students and also make it possible for teachers and students to share explicit images.

SESAME (Stop Educator Sexual Abuse Misconduct & Exploitation) President Terri Miller echoed that sentiment, stating “before cell phones, we knew who our kids were talking to” but today, “kids have their own phones, they’re taking them to bed, and parents need to watch more.”

Altice has been one of many teachers to be charged for inappropriate conduct. Over the course of just a few months, educators across the country were arrested for entering into an inappropriate relationship with their students, Tennessee teacher Janet Smothers, LaToya Parker, Florida teacher Caroline Lawson, 26-year-old Allyson Moran and Katherine Ross Ridenhour were all arrested on similar charges. A woman named Kayla Sprinkles was arrested in North Carolina for similar sexual crimes.

Altice has been one of many teachers to be charged for inappropriate conduct. Over the course of just a few months, teachers across the United States have been charged, tried, and convicted of various abuse and sex crimes.

The list goes on to include 22-year-old Oklahoma science teacher Hunter Day, 28-year-old teacher Megan Kotarski, 23-year-old history teacher Michelle Schiffer, 29-year-old Alyssia Marie Reddy, special education teacher Jordan Ondish and 28-year-old Samantha Fitzpatrick have all been allegedly carrying on inappropriate relationships with their students.

Most recently, teachers such as 29-year-old Haylie Smart, 25-year-old Alaina Ferguson, 26-year-old Amy Nowaczyk, and 32-year-old Laura Bucy were arrested and charged for similar crimes.

LSU Sorority Suspended For “Milk-Chugging Challenge”

The Pi Beta Phi sorority chapter that was suspended at LSU earlier this year for hazing was allegedly suspended due to a milk chugging competition.

According to a report from The Advocate, an investigation found that an active member of the Pi Beta Phi chapter provided a new member of the sorority with a gallon of milk and told her to finish it within a certain amount of time.

The sorority’s national organization — who say that the hazing incident happened on Thursday, October 4 — reported their findings to Louisiana State University Police on Thursday, November 8.

At this time, Ernie Ballard, a spokesman for LSU, said that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

via The Advocate:

The parent organization of Pi Beta Phi sorority suspended their LSU’s chapter on Nov. 8 while officials investigated an allegation of hazing. The national Greek Life organization alleged that a member of their LSU chapter provided a new member “with a gallon of milk and gave her instructions to finish the milk within a certain amount of time,” the initial report from LSU Police says.

The report explains that LSU Police detectives were contacted about the incident from the national headquarters of Pi Beta Phi on Nov. 8. The incident occurred on Oct. 4 sometime between noon and 9 p.m., the report says. The names of both members involved in the milk incident were redacted out in the report. No further details were reported.

The suspension of Pi Beta Phi at LSU is just the latest in a string of hazing or alcohol-related incidents that have occurred at Greek life organizations over recent year.

LSU is one of the biggest recent examples of the pitfalls of fraternity and sorority culture, as 18-year-old freshman Maxwell Gruver passed away in 2017 due to alcohol-related hazing.

In addition to LSU, fraternities have been suspended or expelled across the nation as Greek life organizations and universities attempt to grapple with the pitfalls of hazing, alcohol and drug abuse, and sexual assault.

Schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State, and Penn State have all suspended or expelled fraternities for various reasons.
