Former Baylor Fraternity President Accused Of Rape Given “Sweetheart” Plea Deal

0

MCLENNAN COUNTY JAIL

Jacob Anderson, a former fraternity president at Baylor University who was indicted on felony sexual assault charges, will reportedly avoid jail time and registering as a sex offender after accepting a plea deal.

In 2016, Anderson was indicted on four counts of sexual assault after a female Baylor student accused Anderson of raping her during a party held by Anderson’s former fraternity, Phi Delta Theta.

According to reports, Anderson, now 24, pleaded no contest to one count of unlawful restraint, which is a third-degree felony. The plea deal stipulates that Anderson faces three years of deferred probation, must pay a $400 fine and be required to undergo counseling.

The family of the accuser and their lawyer Vic Feazell called Anderson’s plea bargain a “sweetheart deal.”

“I don’t get it. I just don’t get. It sends a really bad message at this time to women who are thinking about reporting sexual abuse from the past. He’s a good looking young man, he’s from a very wealthy Dallas family, he’s from a fraternity. So what? That doesn’t give him a free pass,” Feazell said.

Following the woman’s allegations, Baylor University launched an investigation that resulted in Anderson’s expulsion.

via CBS:

“The McLennan County District Attorney’s office is known throughout the state for our aggressive prosecution of sexual assault cases, to say otherwise is simply absurd,” said District Attorney Abel Reyna.

“Let us remind everyone that our oath is to seek justice. In pursuit of that ideal, we must evaluate each case alone on its own merit..This office stands by the plea offered and believes we have achieved the best result possible with the evidence at hand.”

The accuser said Anderson assaulted her during a Phi Delta Theta party in 2015. According to an arrest affidavit cited by KWTX, she said she became “disoriented and very confused” after sipping a drink, and Anderson then led her outside to a secluded area and forced her to the ground. She said she was unable to breathe and lost consciousness at some point during the assault, and woke up lying in her own vomit. The affidavit redacted details about the alleged assault.

Additionally, the District Attorney office’s statement also said that law enforcement could not find evidence to support early claims that the woman was drugged.

A University Of Oklahoma Fraternity Was Suddenly Shut Down & No One Knows Why

The Kappa Alpha Order fraternity at the University of Oklahoma has been suddenly and mysteriously shut down and no one on campus knows why.

The fraternity’s national organization did release a statement, however, it did not specify why the fraternity had been closed. Current members must move out of the fraternity house, which is located at 1501 Elm Ave in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Kappa Alpha Order organization released the following brief statement to The Norman Transcript:

“The National Administrative Office of Kappa Alpha Order has closed the local OU chapter. The Kappa Alpha Order national staff and OU administrators are working together to reach a mutual agreement on a specific return timeframe.”

However, other than that brief statement, fraternity officials have not given any details on why the chapter was closed. The university’s student-run television news outlet reported that the closure was due to an investigation into hazing practices.

OU Police Department officials said they do not have an open investigation into the fraternity. University officials said they will provide affected students with information about alternative housing options.

The closure of Kappa Alpha Order at the University of Oklahoma is the latest major fraternity or sorority lawsuit, investigation, suspension or closure in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who was shut down for hazing and the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State, West Virginia University, and Penn State University have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.

WATCH: 16 Feet Monster Alligator Spotted Again In Florida (Video)

Florida Monster Alligator

Sage Stryczny

Chubbs, the infamous monster alligator, has been spotted again at Buffalo Creek Golf Course on Saturday, October 13.

In a video shared to Facebook by Sage Stryczny, the alligator was seen strolling across the grass about 50 feet away.

Stryczny told WFLA that he was with his dad when they “were about to hit off the tee on a par 3 and we saw him laying right on the green.” He said the first thing that went through his mind when he saw the gator was, “Holy crap, that’s a monster gator on the green.”

Chubbs didn’t scare Stryczny and his dad from their golf game and they continued to play with the monster gator not too far away.

“We were trying to golf, so we were within 50 feet of him after we hit our shots,” Stryczny said, who also believes the gator must have been on his way from a small pond to another larger pond. “He took a lot of rests.”

The Monster Gator Was Seen 2 Years Ago

Chubbs was last seen in 2016 when golfers in Palmetto, Florida were playing golf at the same golf course, while the then witness Charles Helms spotted Chubbs casually strolling across the course.

“People have heard that he is out here and that is all they want to see so they will bring spectators to ride so somebody can get a picture,” golf course employee Wendy Schofield told News 3 in 2016. “He doesn’t bother anybody and they don’t bother him, he’s like a mascot for the course, which is owned by Manatee County.”

“He has been here for a very, very long time, he’s not new at all. There have been guesses that he’s 15 to 16 feet long,” Schofield said. “The word has spread that this is a great place to come and play. He is the highlight, but we are worth the price, too.”

Besides Chubbs, the biggest alligator ever recorded in Florida was 14 feet long and 780 pounds.

The Best Reactions To Canada Legalizing Marijuana

0
0

Canada officially legalized marijuana on Wednesday, October 17, and with it came epic Twitter reactions to our friends from the north officially legalizing the devil’s lettuce.

But before we get to the jokes, let’s run over the facts. Here’s everything you need to know about weed legalization in Canada:

– The purchase/carry limit is 30 grams of marijuana.

– The marijuana must be purchased from a licensed vendor.

– You must be 19 or older to purchase marijuana.

– Marijuana can only be smoked in designated areas, which vary by province and locality.

Now that Canada has taken the next bold step into the narcotic future, hopefully, it’s only a matter of time before the United States follows suit. Because if we did, you KNOW social media would be an absolute party, similar to the one Canada is having right now.

Floyd Mayweather Says He’s Fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov For 9-Figures

Instagram Photo

Floyd Mayweather could be returning to the ring, at least that’s what he says. After receiving a callout from UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Mayweather said that he was willing to take the bout. Now, the undefeated boxing star says that the fight will be happening.

Mayweather revealed his plans to face Khabib in an interview with TMZ Sports, where he said that the fight could net him a 9-figure payday. He is estimated to have made $275 million for his most recent outing against Conor McGregor, and he now claims that a fight with Nurmagomedov could net him an even larger sum of money.

“Oh, we’re fighting,” Mayweather (50-0 boxing) told TMZ Sports. “I’m my own boss. I can’t say what’s going on on Khabib’s end, but on my end, we can make it happen.

“… When I face Khabib, I’m getting a nine-figure payday. It’s more than the McGregor fight – probably $100 million more, guaranteed. It could be somewhere between $110 (million) and $200 million (more) guaranteed.”

In his most recent fight, Nurmagomedov choked out Conor McGregor to retain his 155-pound title at UFC 229 in Las Vegas on Oct. 6, 2018. After the fight, a brawl broke out and spilled into the crowd. As a result, Nurmagomedov is currently awaiting punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

With his win, Khabib advanced to 27-0 in his professional career. His 27 consecutive wins gives him the longest winning streak in all of mixed martial arts. Khabib first won the vacant lightweight championship on April 7, 2018 at UFC 223 when he scored a dominant decision win over Al Iaquinta in Brooklyn, New York. He became the first Russian to win a UFC title. The submission victory over McGregor was his first title defense.

This Is The Astros Fan Who Potentially Interfered With Altuve’s Home Run

0

Twitter

While the city of Houston had a collective rough night as they watched the Boston Red Sox take a 3-1 lead over their beloved Astros, no one in the state of Texas has a worse night than Troy Caldwell.

In the bottom of the first inning — with the Astros already trailing 2-0 in the game (and 2-1 in the series) — designated hitter Jose Altuve belted a ball to the right-field wall that forced Boston Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts to leap into the stands to try and prevent the home run.

As Betts extended his arm over the 7-foot right-field wall, the ball bounced back onto the field of play.

Following the controversial moment, replays showed that Betts’ left arm stretched over the wall and into the sea of fans. As he tried to make the catch, Betts’ glove closed a split-second too early, which he says it was because the glove made contact with an Astros fan’s hands.

Mookie Betts was about to rob José Altuve of a home run … until a fan's hand got in the way.

It was ruled an out on review. pic.twitter.com/NLzAnNJ1vj

— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) October 18, 2018

That fan was later identified as Troy Caldwell, who later (jokingly?) requested a security escort out of the game.

Here’s Troy Caldwell. He was the fan who was ruled to have interfered with the Astros potential home run ball. “I’m going to need security to escort me out of here if the Astros don’t come back to win this.” pic.twitter.com/IXE2uEzSoW

— Matt Young (@Chron_MattYoung) October 18, 2018

As for Caldwell, he denies having interfered with the play,  saying: “I didn’t reach over the wall; I was on this side of the line. I don’t understand what happened. I know the rules, and I didn’t reach over the line.”

Luckily, Houston seems to be treating Troy Caldwell far kinder than Chicago treated the infamous Steve Bartman over a decade ago, as a local barbeque joint offered Caldwell free food and encouraged nearby fans to buy him a beer.

Bullsh*t… Hey #Houston if you are at the game BUY THIS GUY A BEER! Did absolutely nothing wrong except be a fan! BBQ on us Troy Caldwell… hopefully this message makes it to him. #NeverSettle #astros https://t.co/OLo1VZG6pP

The Astros and Red Sox will face off for Game 5 on Thursday, October 18 at 8:09 p.m. in Houston.

The Delta Delta Delta sorority and the Sigma Chi fraternity at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have been placed on interim suspensions pending the result of an investigation.

Margarita Perez, the Dean of Students at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette said on Wednesday, October 17, that the University received allegations about both the Sigma Chi fraternity and Delta Delta Delta sorority. Perez did not disclose what those allegations entailed.

“We take all allegations seriously and have paused both organizations’ activities while we thoroughly investigate the claims,” Perez said in a statement.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette officials released the following statement about the Greek life organization’s suspensions:

“Two Greek organizations at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have been placed on interim suspension pending investigations.”

The University will decide on Delta Delta Delta and Sigma Chi’s punishments pending the result of the investigation.

The suspension of Delta Delta Delta and Sigma Chi at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is the latest major fraternity or sorority lawsuit, investigation, suspension or closure in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Wake Forest University, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State University, and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

Getting cold feet before wedding might not be too unusual nowadays, but this bride-to-be not only called off her big day, she also donated the entire wedding to complete strangers.

Kolbie Sanders of Texas, 24, decided to turn the end of her four-year relationship with her fiancé Skylar Cotton. She called off the wedding on Saturday, October 13, only one week before her set-to-be wedding date on October 20th.

Bride-To-Be Gives Out Her Wedding For Free

According to the Daily Mail, the University of Texas at Tyler student told friends on Facebook that she had only 24 hours to find a couple prepared to get married at Belle Vue wedding venue in a week.

“With my engagement ending, I’ve come to find tremendous peace in knowing that I did the right thing for the both of us. With that being said, now I want to do the right thing by others and let some good come out of this decision,” Sanders wrote on her Facebook. “This is a long shot but since my wedding venue has been paid for in full already, I have decided to donate my venue valued at $3,500 to a couple to use for their wedding day!”

“The catch: I have 24 hours to find the couple and they would need to be ready to get married on the date that my venue is booked for which is this Saturday, October 20th!”

Sanders said her hairdresser gave her the idea to give away her big day. “This is for couples who can’t afford a fancy venue or for couples who are spending too much money on their kids to be able to afford a nice wedding,” she added. “This is for couples who love each other and will continue to choose each other for the rest of their lives.”

Sanders said that her fiancé Skylar Cotton is also on board with offering their wedding to another couple and the story of their raffle has since gone viral on social media.

“There was no scandal. We fell out of love and it didn’t feel right to get married,” Sanders said.

Mother-Of-One Is Her Lucky Winner

After her post, Sanders was inundated with messages from hundreds of husbands and brides-to-be desperate to win her big day. After whittling down the applications to a shortlist of 45, Sanders has picked Halie Hipsher as her lucky winner.

Hipsher and her fiancé Matthew Jones will wed on Saturday, October 20, which is a year before they had planned to marry. Hipsher, who is overjoyed, said her ailing grandfather will now be able to see her walking down the aisle.

Insurance worker Halie’s story stood out because her grandfather Edwin Truett Hipsher, 81, is suffering from pancreatic cancer and doesn’t have long to live.

“As he is nearing the closing of his chapter this donation will put us a year ahead of schedule and he will be able to attend,” Hipsher said. “Thank you. I can’t say that enough. I’ll probably be saying it 20,000 times.”

Hipsher also invited Sanders to attend their wedding as the guest of honor.

“She invited me and I am going to the wedding. I wanted to see it followed through. I want to see her get married, it will make me feel complete,” Sanders said.

Sigma Phi Epsilon at Dartmouth College has officially closed after the fraternity’s long battle with both the college and its own board of trustees over issues of local control and alcohol.

According to reports, the national Sigma Phi Epsilon organization suspended the chapter’s charter due to alcohol violations that took place while the chapter already was on alcohol probation.

Diana Lawrence, a spokesperson for Dartmouth College, released the following statement:

“Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity’s national board of directors has suspended the Dartmouth College SigEp chapter’s charter for two years, closing the fraternity effective immediately.”

Furthermore, Lawrence said that the fraternity’s house that is located at 11 Webster Ave. will be leased out and previous members will be assigned college housing.

The fraternity’s house, at 11 Webster Ave., will be leased out, and members will be assigned college housing, according to Lawrence. Over the summer, members said there were 22 members living in 26 beds after a May culling that ousted 80 other members for alleged alcohol violations.

In July, Sigma Phi Epsilon alumni took the group’s board of trustees to court for what it called a “power grab” that took voting rights away from an estimated 1,500 potential and existing alumni members.

The chapter, which was founded in 1909, last disaffiliated in 1967, and rejoined the national organization in 1981.

“With support from the college and the SigEp national office, we are hopeful that the chapter will be back on campus in winter term 2021,” Lawrence said.

The closure of Sigma Phi at Dartmouth College is the latest major fraternity or sorority lawsuit, investigation, suspension or closure in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Wake Forest University, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State University, and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

Netflix

After becoming one of the most successful and talked about Netflix series of all-time in 2015, Making A Murderer is finally back with the latest updates from the Steven Avery case.

The first season — which was originally released on Netflix on December 18, 2015 — chronicled the story of Steven Avery, a man from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, who served 18 years in prison for the wrongful conviction of sexual assault and attempted murder of Penny Beerntsen.

In 2003, after he was fully exonerated due to DNA evidence, Avery filed a $36-million civil lawsuit against Manitowoc County, its former sheriff, and its former district attorney for wrongful conviction and imprisonment.  However, just two years later in 2005, Avery was arrested on charges of murdering local photographer Teresa Halbach and was convicted in 2007, finding himself back in prison.

In addition to Avery’s trials and tribulations, the first season of Making A Murderer followed the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey, who was also charged in the murder. Dassey’s conviction was largely based on his confession under interrogation, which has since become a point of controversy.

Season one of Making A Murderer became such a cultural phenomenon that a 2015 petition to the White House to pardon Avery garnered more than 500,000 signatures, forcing the White House to release a statement that noted “the President cannot pardon a state criminal offense”

Following the massive success of the first season — which was filmed over the course of ten years — Netflix announced in July 2016 that they were filming a second season that would explore the aftermath of Dassey’s conviction and the numerous appeals that have taken place.

Making A Murderer: Part 2, which consists of ten episodes, premieres on Netflix at 3 a.m. EST on Friday, October 19
