Fortnite

The video game phenomenon that is Fortnite (and the company that created it, Epic Games) continues to plow on, steamrolling all of its competitors on the way to a $5-$8 billion dollars valuation.

Ever since being released in July of 2017, Fortnite has become video game juggernaut, drawing in more than 125 million players in less than a year and earning hundreds of millions of dollars per month.

And despite the fact that Fortnite is already a massive success, the folks at Epic Games keep rolling out new “seasons” of the game to keep things fresh.

In addition to adding new suits, gliders, and weapons, the latest Fortnite season now has something called Shadow Stones.

But what are these mysterious Shadow Stones and what exactly do they do? And where can you find them? Find out below!

What Are The Shadow Stones?

The Shadow Stones are consumables in Fortnite season six that grants the player various powers and perks.

After consuming a Shadow Stone, the player will have increased damage resistance, speed, jump height, and will have the ability to turn invisible when standing still.

Additionally, players with the Shadow Stone can also phase through cover, allowing them to catch their opponents off guard.

The effects caused by the Shadow Stones lasts for 45 seconds, however, you can turn it off at any time by holding down the alt fire button.

Where Can The Shadow Stones Be Found?

The Shadow Stones can be found all throughout the Fortnite map in areas known as the “Corrupted Areas”.

The Corrupted Areas can be found in all the purple sections of the map:

While it’s possible to find Shadow Stones in other sections of the map, the Corrupted Areas are the most likely place to find them.

WATCH: Brett Kavanaugh & Christine Blasey Ford Testimony Live Stream

CBS

Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, a woman accusing him of sexually assaulting her in high school, are testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the morning of Thursday, September 27.

Ford, who is currently professor of psychology at Palo Alto University and a research psychologist at the Stanford University School of Medicine, alleges that U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982 in what she described as an “attempted rape.”

Watch both Kavanaugh’s and Ford’s testimonies below:

You can read Ford’s full letter below that accused Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault — which was sent to Senator Dianne Feinstein — below, via CNN:

Dear Senator Feinstein;

I am writing with information relevant in evaluating the current nominee to the Supreme Court.

As a constituent, I expect that you will maintain this as confidential until we have further opportunity to speak.
Brett Kavanaugh physically and sexually assaulted me during high school in the early 1980’s. He conducted these acts with the assistance of REDACTED.

Both were one to two years older than me and students at a local private school.

The assault occurred in a suburban Maryland area home at a gathering that included me and four others.

Kavanaugh physically pushed me into a bedroom as I was headed for a bathroom up a short stair well from the living room. They locked the door and played loud music precluding any successful attempt to yell for help.

Kavanaugh was on top of me while laughing with REDACTED, who periodically jumped onto Kavanaugh. They both laughed as Kavanaugh tried to disrobe me in their highly inebriated state. With Kavanaugh’s hand over my mouth I feared he may inadvertently kill me.

From across the room a very drunken REDACTED said mixed words to Kavanaugh ranging from “go for it” to “stop.”

At one point when REDACTED jumped onto the bed the weight on me was substantial. The pile toppled, and the two scrapped with each other. After a few attempts to get away, I was able to take this opportune moment to get up and run across to a hallway bathroom. I locked the bathroom door behind me. Both loudly stumbled down the stair well at which point other persons at the house were talking with them. I exited the bathroom, ran outside of the house and went home.

I have not knowingly seen Kavanaugh since the assault. I did see REDACTED once at the REDACTED where he was extremely uncomfortable seeing me.

I have received medical treatment regarding the assault. On July 6 I notified my local government representative to ask them how to proceed with sharing this information . It is upsetting to discuss sexual assault and its repercussions, yet I felt guilty and compelled as a citizen about the idea of not saying anything.

I am available to speak further should you wish to discuss. I am currently REDACTED and will be in REDACTED.

In confidence, REDACTED.

During her testimony, Ford said she feels ‘terrified’ but feels it is her ‘civic duty’ to testify.

Woman Breaks Into Frat House, Steals A Bunch Of Stuff & Takes A Dump On The Floor

KFOR

Usually, when COED writes about something that involves a fraternity house, theft, and sh*t, the fraternity brothers themselves are usually involved. Nope, not this time. This time it was a one-man, or rather, a one-woman show.

Melissa Lenz, 25, (who is likely a friend of Jesse Pinkman, if ya know what I mean) was arrested on Sunday, September 23, shortly after police were called to the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity in the 2500 block of N. Virginia in Oklahoma City.

According to reports, Lenz is accused of stealing hundreds of dollars of cash, a set of car keys, and defecating in the middle of an Oklahoma City University fraternity bedroom.

However, in typical fraternity fashion, Oklahoma City University Police Chief Jennifer Rodgers said that the fraternity left the front door unlocked, allowing Lenz to enter the home.

“Apparently, they left the front door unlocked and someone from the neighborhood walked into the house and then entered a private bedroom of one of the fraternity brothers,” said Oklahoma City University Police Chief Jennifer Rodgers. “She proceeded to go into his wallet, took over $300 in cash and his car keys. In the meantime, she dropped her ID card onto the floor and he walked in on her as she was doing these things.”

Lenz, according to a probable cause affidavit, “screamed and pulled up her pants and slammed the door.” As police were being called, witnesses said Lenz slipped out a window. She was taken into custody not long after police arrived. Inside the room, police found a “plastic bag that smelled of fecal matter.”

According to court documents, Lenz admitted to police she entered the home because she needed to use the bathroom, saw the wallet on the bed and took the money along with the keys. Those items were recovered and returned to the victim.

Police say burglaries are uncommon on the campus, however, the incident is a good reminder to students to keep homes and cars locked at all times.

While the stolen items have since been returned, there is no indication on whether or not the fraternity was able to get the smell of crackhead feces out of his carpet.

Missouri School Agrees To Pay $423,000 To Student Who Was Stomped By Classmates… In Mud Pit

A Missouri school agreed to settle a lawsuit for $423,000 with a former student who sued the school district in Springfield in 2015, claiming that a muddy well for a back-to-school event was not properly audited in August 2010.

Megan Taylor, a graduate of the Kickapoo High School who filed the lawsuit, also claimed that the school officials could not provide her with emergency help after being pushed into the mud and then being assaulted by classmates.

What Happened?

According to the Springfield News-Leader, in the suit, filed three years ago, Taylor said while attending “How Night,” an annual tradition at Kickapoo High School sponsored by the Student Council on August 26, 2010, she was pushed from behind and fell on her face in a muddy pit on the campus that a classmate later told authorities resembled a “mosh pit.”

Taylor, who was 17 years old at the time, broke her collarbone and injured her heart and surrounding tissue according to reports. She also suffered from four strokes that resulted in permanent brain damage, severe dementia and temporary blindness in one eye that lasted for weeks.

In 2010, Megan Taylor sustained permanent brain damage after she was injured at a school event. She sued the district and principal, alleging he didn't call an ambulance right away. Now, a judge has excused him from the case. Here's why: https://t.co/cCPTBlPJWV pic.twitter.com/0HwG2KGeXp

— News-Leader (@springfieldNL) June 28, 2018

“I started screaming, telling them to get off because I was feeling really crushed. And I felt like everything was kind of just getting squished,” she said during a 2017 deposition. “And then I felt my shoulder pop.”

Taylor, who repeatedly lost consciousness, was dragged to safety by a fellow student.

She was absent for nearly two months of school her senior year following the incident and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the suit, according to the Daily Mail cited the suit.

In the suit, Taylor sought medical expenses and an unspecified amount. The settlement details were not spelled out in the court records available Tuesday, September 25.

The school district did not admit any liability but agreed to settle the suit for $423,106. According to the terms of the settlement, Taylor agreed to reject the lawsuit and can not be revoked.

According to Springfield News-Leader, Stephen Hall, chief communications officer for the district, confirmed the amount, which will be paid by the district’s insurance provider.

“The safety and well-being of our students will always be our first priority. We are committed to their best interests—always,” Hall said. “Any time one of our students is injured, our hearts go out to them, we seek opportunities to provide support, and we work to prevent future injuries from occurring.”

“We are pleased that this case has been resolved and our very best wishes go with Megan as she moves forward.”

Who Is Megan Taylor?

Megan Taylor is a former student at Kickapoo High School who suffered critical injuries while attending a back-to-school event in 2010.

Taylor, now 25, was a 17-year-old cheerleader when the incident happened.

According to the Daily Mail, Taylor wanted to become a physician before she got injured, graduated from Kickapoo in 2011 and is now a student at Missouri Southern State University.

Brett Kavanaugh has faced plenty of objection to his nomination to the Supreme Court, but ahead of Thursday’s Senate hearing about the sexual misconduct allegations against the judge, hundreds of students have been bussed to Washington, D.C. to show their support for his nomination.

Liberty University sent more than 300 students to the nation’s capital to rally in support of Kavanaugh before one of his accusers, Christine Blasey, testifies in front of the Senate Judiciary committee.

This comes days after a group of students at Yale forced classes to shut down after a sit-in to protest Kavanaugh’s nomination.

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. supported his students’ decision to head to Washington for the rally which will serve as a counterprotest against students from Yale, Kavanaugh’s alma mater. Videos and photos of the support for Kavanaugh — which was sponsored by the Christian organization Concerned Women for America — have been surfacing on social media throughout the morning.

“We have heard from many of you that you want to support Judge Kavanaugh in the face of these accusations. Please join Concerned Women for America on Capitol Hill this Thursday, September 27, 2018, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at The Park behind the Russell Senate Office Building to support Judge Kavanaugh and Chairman Grassley,” an announcement for the rally read.

You can check out some of the support for Kavanaugh’s confirmation below.

Earlier this month, a woman, Christine Blasey Ford, came forward and accused the Supreme Court judge nominee of assaulting her while in high school. On Sunday, Sept. 23, The New Yorker reported that a woman, Deborah Ramirez, claimed Kavanaugh exposed himself to her while they were students at Yale during the 1983-1984 academic year.

From The Hill:

Deborah Ramirez accused Kavanaugh of exposing himself in front of her and causing her to touch his penis when she pushed him away during a party while the two were in college.

Since then, multiple other allegations have surfaced accusing Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior.

Kavanaugh has vehemently denied the allegations, claiming they are a “smear, plain and simple.”

How To Find Your Own Space In College

College is a stressful place, and because college hates every student that attends they must put every issue or stress pain in their faces. All this built up stress needs to be released, and no screaming will not help. You end up getting weird glares and a talk from the college counselor. That is not a good situation, nor a comfortable one. So, to help you through these stressful situations here are our tips and tricks to finding your own space in college.

Go To The Library

Instagram Photo

If you have piles of homework or just need to finish a small assignment, go to the library. It’s quiet, and no one bothers you in there. It’s literally a place where everyone else around you is working. A library isn’t just to read books, it’s also this magical place to get your work done without getting distracted by friends or roommates. And if you think your friends will go in there and distract you, think again. You have two things on your side, one the fact that it’s a library and some people hate libraries. Second, there is always a scary old librarian that will yell at the slightest noise. So, you are all good in the library.

Coffee Shop

Instagram Photo

There are two reasons why a coffee shop is a college student best friend. One, it’s almost like a library but with background music and the smell of coffee in the air. Two, there’s coffee. The beautiful drink that keeps you awake. You get your time alone to work, and you get the heavenly drink of your choice. And in some way, when you need a break, people watching is very enjoyable.

Text Your Roommate

Instagram Photo

Sometimes some quiet time is all you need to get your focus back together. But, with a roommate that quiet time is never possible. Follow our simple steps to getting that peace and quiet. Take your phone, unlock it. Go to your messages and text your roommate. Tell them you need a half an hour to sleep without them continually asking you about what is for dinner in the dining hall. It’s that simple.

Take A Walk

Instagram Photo

It’s quick and easy, if it’s a beautiful day out, go for a walk. Sometimes taking a small walk can clear your head of any stress. Even if it’s just for ten minutes or even around the block, it’s something. The fresh air is hugely refreshing, and something about taking a few deep breaths of clean air makes you forget about what you are stressed about. And to up the enjoyment of the walk, plug in your headphones and listen to your favorite playlist. But, whatever you do, do not on any circumstances play any John Mayer unless you want to cry on your walk.

Find An Empty Classroom Or Study Area

Instagram Photo

Kind of like the library or coffee shop, it’s a place to get some quality time to go finish your work. It’s also a tranquil area where the only thing that is making noise is you breathing. With that quiet space, you get your job done faster and with fewer distractions. To make your chances of not having anyone come into the classroom you are in, politely put a sign on the door that says how long you will be in their working and to please be quiet. Trust us, it works.

Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor makes his highly anticipated return to the octagon on Oct. 6, 2018, to face off against current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Conor McGregor last fought in the UFC on November 12, 2016, defeating Eddie Alvarez to claim the UFC lightweight championship. At the time of his big win, McGregor became the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles in two different weight classes simultaneously; he was also the featherweight champion at the time.

Since that fight, McGregor was stripped of both belts, welcomed his first child to the world, and dabbled in the boxing world for a superfight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Now, he is finally ready to step back into the cage to attempt to reclaim the title that he believes is still his.

Ahead of the bout, nutritionist George Lockhart and chef Eric Triliegi have been bringing some food porn to social media to show off the meal plan for McGregor’s preparation. What does it take to eat like a champ and what can you devour while preparing for a gruelling weight cut ahead of world title fight?

Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, claimed the vacant UFC lightweight title at UFC 223 on April 7, 2018 in Brooklyn, New York. Nurmagomedov scored a unanimous decision victory win over Al Iaquinta in the main event. Khabib was initially scheduled to fight Tony Ferguson for the title, but the bout fell through in the final days leading up to the event and Iaquinta stepped up on short notice.

UFC 229 takes place Saturday, Oct. 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The UFC 229 main card will air on pay-per-view, with preliminary bouts on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Along with the main event between Nurmagomedov and McGregor, other bouts currently scheduled include Sergio Pettis vs. Jussier Formiga in a battle of top flyweight contenders, former Invicta FC champion Michelle Waterson vs. Felice Herrig, Ovince Saint Preux vs. Dominick Reyes, Ryan LaFlare vs. Tony Martin, and Lina Lansberg vs. Yana Kunitskaya.

An Ann Arbor woman has been arraigned on murder and other charges after her SUV slammed into the rear of a disabled school bus, killing two people on May 29.

Michigan State Police said a fugitive team arrested 25-year-old Andre Edwards in suburban Detroit on Tuesday, September 25, according to Ottawa Citizen.

She is now facing two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of operating [a vehicle] while intoxicated causing death, three counts of child abuse and other charges.  Edwards is currently being held on $500,000 bond following her arraignment Wednesday, September 26.

What Happened?

On Tuesday, May 29, 25-year-old Andre Edwards crashed her SUV into a disabled school bus on I-94. The crash had instantly killed 42-year-old Nader Chehadi, a tow truck worker who was behind the bus. 28-year-old Antoinette Butler, who was Edwards’ front seat passenger at the time, died on Friday, June 1, a few days later in hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.

The school bus was empty at the time of the crash.

In the meantime, Edwards’ three children, aged five, four and two, were not properly secured in her car, police say, and all three were hospitalized, MI Headlines reported.

Witnesses said they saw Edwards’ car veer suddenly across all lanes of the highway to the right and drive on to the shoulder before trying to get back on to the road.

At this point, the SUV is reported to have hit the bus, Detroit News reported.

Who Is Andre Edwards?

Andre Edwards of Ann Arbor, a 25-year-old Detroit woman slammed into a disabled school bus while the bus was being towed. The crash ended up killing two people while her three children, all under five, unrestrained in the back.

Edwards was driving on a suspended license at the time of the crash, according to the Daily Mail. Since 2009, she had been disqualified from driving twice, her more recent exclusion for three or more alcohol-related convictions in less than 10 years.

Police allege Edwards was also under the influence of THC and alcohol while she was driving, and she faces multiple charges for both driving and causing injury without a valid license.

Banning Essay Mills: Unethical or Unfair?

$

Shutterstock

Over 40 university chiefs in the United Kingdom have advocated the banning of companies which offer essay writing services, or better known as “essay mills.” As many as 1 in 7 students across the UK might have paid for essay writing services from 2014-2018. Sam Gyimah, Minister of State for Universities, sees this as a problem as he deems it unethical and undermines the integrity of degree courses offered. Gyimah sent out a statement warning students of the price they have to pay if they consult essay mills. “I expect universities to be educating students about these services and highlight the stiff, and possibly life-changing, penalties they face.”

However, many argue that targeting students instead of the companies is the wrong path to take. Many calls for the same banning other countries around the world have imposed. Around 40 university chiefs wrote letters to the education secretary Damian Hinds MP in the hope of seeking changes in this dilemma.

Essay mills are banned in the United States and New Zealand, while in other countries, they are actively developing rules and legislation to reasonably deal with them.

Damian Hinds MP has yet responded.

Instagram Photo

A study done in August by Swansea University held questionnaires asking students if they had ever paid essay mills to complete their work. Reviewing surveys they did in 1978, statistics show a 15.7% rise in the number of students who admitted cheating.

Though buying services from essay mills aren’t illegal, the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), which monitors standards in higher education in the UK, said submitting essays written by someone else is one form of plagiarism that would results in expulsion if caught.

Should universities focus on tackling the issues of essay mills by implementing more rules on the companies or letting the responsibility of that fall on the students?

University of South Alabama Student Sends Statement By Tying Noose On Tree

Noose and bike reported hanging in tree on University of South Alabama campus https://t.co/QhYzdV9TVG pic.twitter.com/oafJkxPyH6

— NBC 15 (@mynbc15) September 26, 2018

“I don’t believe we are free in America, we’re haunted by our history of racial inequality, burdened by a legacy created by slavery, lynching, and segregation.”- Bryan Stevenson

Bryan A. Stevenson is an African American lawyer, social justice activist, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, and also a professor at New York University School of Law. His statement on the ideology of black freedom in America is proven as another racist act happened. This time, it was in The University of South Alabama.

On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, campus police received an anonymous tip of a noose and a bicycle hanging in a tree in front of the campus dining hall. When the police officers arrived, what they saw confirmed the anonymous tip that was given. Although the photo sent to USAPD appeared to show a noose, it was found missing when police officers arrived.

According to USAPD, they checked the serial number of the bike to determined whether it was a stolen bike or not and the results came out negative. Upon further investigation, USAPD also found out that the same tree the bike was on is regularly used for hanging sheet signs. It has been a long practice for sheet signs in trees throughout campus to advertise upcoming significant events, such as homecoming or recreational activities.

The tree on the right is a where a noose was hung on the USA Campus Tuesday evening. Campus police claimed it was to hang a banner. Students I spoke to said no one uses rope to hang banners, and some say it was clearly a racist act. pic.twitter.com/Vcq5dVphFp

— Christopher Harress (@Charress) September 27, 2018

Following this situation, school authorities quickly took actions and found the perpetrator to be a campus student whose name was not released. Tony Waldrop, the President of the University of South Alabama, said in a statement posted on the school’s Facebook page.

“A University of South Alabama student has been interimly suspended and banned from campus, pending a formal hearing, after confessing to an incident discovered last night outside the campus dining hall”. It was said that the student acted alone.

The Student Government Association posted a statement the next day stating their intolerable stance against racism and discrimination.

The Student Government Association is sympathetic to the students affected by the recent events and supportive of all students at the University of South Alabama. We do not promote any acts of discrimination, hatred or intolerance towards any students. pic.twitter.com/YKdkCRHfCh

Ihrke, who is 29 at the time of this writing, joined the military when she was just 19-years-old and served on active duty for four years.

Following her active duty service, Ihrke was able to earn a science degree from Elmhurst College in Illinois due to the GI Bill. And after college, she began her modeling career.

Now that she’s off the battlefield and out of the classroom, Ihrke has turned her attention to Instagram, as she now has over 100,000 followers.

via The Daily Mail:

After leaving the Marines, Shannon turned her ambitions to modeling.

“In the military, I was always concerned about being the best I could be for my brothers and sisters in arms. In the modeling world, you really have to push yourself to success because no one is going to do it for you, you have to go out and get it yourself,” she said.

She added: “I owe the Marine Corps my life, hands down. It gave me a reason to wake up, push myself, set goals, and to push myself even harder when things got tough.”

“Had I not had other dreams I still wanted to accomplish in my life I would have re-enlisted without hesitation… and although I am no longer on active duty, I will always bleed green.”

“Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But the Marines don’t have that problem,” Ihrke said.

How To Create A Perfect Cover Letter To Land A Dream Job

$
0
0
Perfect Cover Letter

Shutterstock

Everyone knows that the basis for getting a job requires handing in an organized, professional resume. But in some places, they need you to hand in more. If you’re applying for a traditional office setting job such as Editorial, Marketing, Business, you’re gonna be required to hand in a cover letter.

A cover letter is not so much different than a resume. Besides the bullet points and having different sections that sum out your whole professional life on one page, it’s going to be in an essay format with a twist.

Here’s what a good cover letter should look like:

Cover Letter Structure

Try to imagine your cover letter and your resume to be like twins with different outfits. The fundamentals of it are similar, but the general makeup is different. For example, how weird would it be if you are the employer, and you see two different fonts in the applicant’s resume and cover letter? There is no consistency in the visuals and can come off unprofessional.

  1. Contact Information: Be sure to put your contact information on the top of the page in a nice font and font size that can catch the attention of your employer. Employers shouldn’t need to search your whole letter from top to bottom just to pinpoint who’s application they’re looking at.
  2. Greeting: In a job interview, one of the most important things everyone knows is to switch to your professional tone and choice of words. Do that as well when it comes to starting off your cover letter. Do not start off with the conventional “Hello” or “To Whom It May Concern” as it comes off unprofessional or too impersonal.  “Dear Ms. Jones/Mr. Graham” is fine. If you can’t find a contact person, you can try some of these examples: “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear (Company Name) Recruiter.”
  3. Opening Paragraph: It’s always a good idea to start off direct. Your introductory paragraph should explain:
    • What position you’re applying for.
    • Where you found the job opening at.
    • Why you are qualified for the job.
  4. Body Paragraph: This paragraph is where you prove yourself to your employer. This paragraph should not be a regurgitation of your resume, but a space where you get to write additional information that complements your resume. Write about the skillsets you have and why it applies to this job opening. Explain why you are interested in working for that company and how you think you can help them grow. Let them know you’ve done research and read up about the company and its goals. An important thing to keep in mind on top of this is to not make this too lengthy. Keep it coherent, straightforward, and professional.
  5. Closing Paragraph: Summarize. Summarize. Summarize. Reaffirm the strong points and qualifications in your letter so that it will be fresh in their memory when they put your letter down. Be sure to mind the transitions so that it doesn’t sound redundant and boring. Let them know where they can contact you by putting in your contact information and thanking them for their time to review your application is always an excellent way to end your letter.

Getting a job is hard in today’s world, but with a good resume and a concise cover letter, you are already on the right track to be a step closer to your career.

WVU Bans Five Fraternities From Campus For 10 Years

West Virginia University has banned five fraternities from the school’s campus for at least a decade.

According to a statement from the university that was released on Thursday, September 27, the Alpha Sigma Phi, Kappa Alpha Order, Phi Sigma Kappa, Sigma Chi and Theta Chi fraternities wrote letters of intent to disassociate from the school back in August.

The fraternities reportedly chose to disassociate because the organizations have been upset by regulations implemented over the last three years, primarily a ban on recruiting first semester freshmen.

West Virginia University says that as a result of disassociating, the fraternities can no longer participate in university-sanctioned activities such as Greek Week and intramurals.

Furthermore, the five fraternities are no longer eligible for grants from the college and cannot use the Mountaineers logo for anything pertaining to the fraternity.

This is the latest major fraternity or sorority lawsuit, investigation, suspension or closure in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who was shut down for hazing and the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State, West Virginia University, and Penn State University have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.

A Washington D.C. high school principal captured on tape ridiculing a student who had reported a sexual assault was placed on administrative leave Thursday, September 27 by city officials amid growing calls for the principal’s ouster.

The Washington Post reported that Roosevelt High School Principal Aqueelha James can be heard on tape talking to colleagues about “embarrassing” a freshman who alleged she was assaulted on campus.

The student had approaches James in June 2017 to report that she was sexually assaulted in the school bathroom when a male student came in and forced her into a stall, kissed her and put his hand on her dress. The student said he left a hickey on her neck.

At First, The Principal Acted Supported

According to the Daily Mail, the student and her mother met the principal in her office in July 2017, where James initially sympathetic and supported.

“I’m here to support and be of assistance. I don’t like the idea that your daughter has been assaulted sexually. It is a crime,” as The Washington Post cited James in an audio obtained. The principal also promised a swift and thorough investigation.

However, after the distraught girl abruptly left the conference room where she was meeting with James, followed by her mother, the principal took a different tone with other school officials who were present.

“I’m sick and tired of her and her mom,” James said in the recording, made by the girl’s mother on her cellphone. “This is a bunch of bulls***.”

“This . . . is going to compromise her,” James said on the recording. “So I’m going to call MPD, I’m going to have a long, drawn-out email just so that I can embarrass her.”

The Cellphone Record Left Unintentionally Became The Evidence

The parent had left the phone in the office unintentionally when she went to console her daughter outside, it’s claimed.
The student and her mother then filed a lawsuit against James and the D.C. government in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia claiming that the principal failed to adequately investigate the sexual assault allegations and that she defamed the girl by impugning her credibility to police officers, according to The Washington Post. The record is now evidence in a lawsuit seeking at least $5 million in damages.

D.C. Public Schools said on Wednesday, September 26 that an internal investigation had been launched.

A statement said: “DCPS does not tolerate sexual misconduct or harassment in our schools. We take the safety and security of all of our students seriously, and while we cannot discuss the specifics of personnel matters, when the issue at Roosevelt was brought to our attention we launched an investigation and took action.”

On Thursday morning, a spokeswoman for D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said that the mayor had instructed school officials to re-examine James’ behavior. “The safety of our students is paramount, and we expect all who work with our students to be compassionate and supportive,” spokeswoman LaToya Foster told the Washinton Post.

James earns $147,000 annually and is on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues, according to the Daily Mail. She had been principal at the school since 2016.
