Clemson University Cracking Down On Fraternity Parties

Clemson University has become the latest university to overhaul their Greek life rules and regulations in response to the tragic hazing and alcohol-related deaths that have occurred over the last few years.

According to reports, Clemson University Greek life officials cracked down on fraternity rules last semester (Spring 2018) to reduce the risk of “unsafe” behavior at frat houses.

Among the new rules, fraternity brothers are only allowed to invite three guests to parties, hard liquor has been banned at events, and student IDs are scanned at the door to monitor who’s attending.

The decision comes as universities around the nation attempt to combat increased reports of deaths or injuries at fraternity events and parties.

via Greenville News:

“We had to change our culture. Our Greek community just had a tragedy strike with the loss of a new member at another Greek organization, and after that we knew things had to change,” said Evans Few, a senior and Kappa Alpha Order president. “Since I’ve been initiated, we’ve been making these changes, but last semester we had another incident, another eye-opener.”

Fraternities across the country are enforcing similar safety rules. Other fraternities not interested in changing their rules have severed ties with their respective universities and are operating independently. As a result of the Interfraternity Council decision, students say Clemson fraternity parties now have a mostly Greek attendance because getting an invite can be tough.

Since last spring, two violations have been filed against fraternities: one this fall for alcohol-related disorderly conduct, and another last spring for alcohol offenses. That compares with an average of four violations filed each semester since spring 2013.

Clemson’s Greek life community accounts for 23% of the student population.

This is the latest major fraternity or sorority overhaul in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who was shut down for hazing and the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State, West Virginia University, and Penn State University have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.

You know how they say “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life?” Well, millennials have taken that phrase and run with it, as there is now a major or minor for almost every possible career you can dream of … including making alcohol.

According to reports, wee little Lourdes University in Ohio will begin to offer an undergraduate degree in beer and wine making.

The program, which will begin in August 2019, will feature courses in fermentation, chemistry, nutrition, and accounting. Students will be required to complete three internships, including one through an Irish study abroad program.

Lourdes University officials said that the new undergrad program was developed as a response to growth in the industry, as the number of breweries in the United States increased by over 400% between 2010 and 2016.

According to the Ledger-Enquirer reports that Lourdes University partnered with multiple local breweries, vineyards in California, and distilleries in Galway, Ireland, to support the program.

The new program comes as similar degrees have been developed for the medical and recreational marijuana industry, such as Northern Michigan’s “Medicinal Plant Chemistry” course.

Lourdes University is a private Catholic college located in Sylvania, Ohio, that has about 1,400 students. Established in 1958, the University is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania.

Daily Mail

What would you do if you were caught in class using your cell phone? Chances are you would try to bargain with the teacher in order to keep your trusty device in your pocket before it gets confiscated and you can’t have it for the rest of the day.

Well, a few students in China got caught using their phones during a self-study session and they decided the best plan of action was to smash their phones.

They offered to do so to their teacher, and the teacher happily watched the madness.

From the Daily Mail:

The incident took place at The No. 2 Middle School of Dao County in Yongzhou, southern China’s Hunan Province, on September 5. The two teenagers, He and Liao, were said to have been caught using the phones during a self-studying session on the night of September 4. After their phones were confiscated by a teacher named Xiong, they found the teacher and offered to smash their phone in the classroom to show their resolution to study harder, the Dao County Education Bureau said in a statement.

You can check out the video below:

The students were also humiliated before they destroyed their phones, being forced to read the harm of students using their phones to their classmates.

Unfortunately for Professor Xiong, the school headmaster says the way they dealt with it was “inappropriate.” As a result, Xiong was deducted his bonus salary and the kids were without their cell phones. It’s a tough life.

Police

Marylee Walker, 30, has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash, four years after 27-year-old Jessica Erausquin was found dead on the side of the road in Cocoa Beach, Florida, back in 2014.

On October 16, 2014, Eruasquin was dead found on Rose Street in Cocoa Beach and police said they were investigating her death as a traffic homicide. While medical examiners determined that Erausquin died of multiple areas of blunt force trauma to the head, her killer was never found.

Police said all of their leads had been exhausted until they interviewed a former acquaintance of Walker’s who provided them with information corroborated by witnesses.

Walker was arrested and charged on Tuesday, September 18.

According to Florida Today, the key information was discovered after private detectives hired by the Eruasquin’s family found that a boarding pass with Walker’s name on it had been discovered near to Jessica’s body.

via Florida Today:

A private investigator hired by her family after her death found a boarding pass for a flight to Ohio with Erausquin’s body. Walker’s name and information were on the boarding poass.

According to her family, the 27-year-old was seen leaving Lido’s Cabaret, where she worked as a dancer, with another woman in an SUV. No details have been released on what exactly happened between 11 p.m. when she left the club and when her body was found.

A press release Cocoa Beach Police Department Tuesday was short on details, saying only that a “former associate” of Walker’s had been identified and interviewed and that those statements matched those of other witnesses and the medical examiner’s findings.

Walker is currently being held at the Osceola County Correctional Facility before being transported to Brevard County. Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call the Cocoa Beach Police Department at 321-868-3251.

What Happened?

On October 16, 2014, Cocoa Beach police responded to Rose Drive where the body of Jessica Erausquin was found. While initial law enforcement reports indicated that Erausquin was killed in a hit-and-run, family members asserted that she could have been murdered, eventually hiring private investigators.

The investigators found that a boarding pass with Walker’s name on it had been discovered near to Erausquin ‘s body. In addition, police interviewed a former acquaintance of Marylee Walker’s who provided them with information corroborated by witnesses that led to Walker’s arrest.

Walker was charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash on September 18, 2018 — almost four years after the murder.

How To Set Your Twitter Account Back To A Chronological Timeline

Shutterstock

After a few years of using an algorithm, Twitter is finally allowing users to revert to a chronological timeline. Twitter announced on Tuesday, September 18, that they are now allowing users to switch between viewing tweets in reverse chronological order or based on the site’s algorithms.

Twitter first ditched the chronological timeline for an algorithm-based timeline back in 2016. Now, they will allow users to decide between a chronological timeline and an algorithm-driven timeline.

Users have been begging Twitter to switch back to a chronological timeline ever since the change was first made in 2016. After years of “feedback” (AKA complaints), Twitter finally decided to make the switch in September 2018.

🆕 if you turn off timeline ranking in settings today, you’ll see all the tweets from people you follow in reverse chronological order…no “in case you missed it” or tweets the people you follow “liked”. https://t.co/F9qOg9aC22

— jack (@jack) September 18, 2018

The social media giant explained their decision on their official Twitter Support account:

We’re working on new ways to give you more control over your timeline. But first, some context: Twitter helps you see what’s happening by showing the best Tweets for you based on your interactions.

We’ve learned that when showing the best Tweets first, people find Twitter more relevant and useful. However, we’ve heard feedback from people who at times prefer to see the most recent Tweets.

Our goal with the timeline is to balance showing you the most recent Tweets with the best Tweets you’re likely to care about, but we don’t always get this balance right.

So, we’re working on providing you with an easily accessible way to switch between a timeline of Tweets that are most relevant for you and a timeline of the latest Tweets. You’ll see us test this in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, today we updated the “Show the best Tweets first” setting. When off, you’ll only see Tweets from people you follow in reverse chronological order. Previously when turned off, you’d also see “In case you missed it” and recommended Tweets from people you don’t follow.

Our plan is to eventually replace this setting when the easier-to-access switch described above is available. We’ll keep you updated and are listening to your feedback – let us know what you think!

How To Turn On ‘Chronological Timeline’ On Twitter

Step 1: Open Twitter & click on your profile picture in the top left corner to open the main menu.

Step 2: Once at the menu, click on Settings and privacy’:

Step 3: After clicking Settings and Privacy, click on Content preferences’:

Step 4: After clicking Content preferences, TURN OFF the ‘Show the best Tweets first’ option:

Step 5: If your ‘Show the best Tweets first’ option looks like this, you’ve successfully turned on the chronological timeline:

#BREAKING: Tippecanoe High School currently on lockdown, according to dispatchers in Miami County. Reason under investigation. More to come.

— WHIO-TV (@whiotv) September 19, 2018

Tippecanoe High School, a public high school in Tipp City, Ohio, is the 95th ranked school in Ohio.

The lockdown at Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City, Ohio is just the latest in a string of lockdowns, bomb threats, and shootings that have plagued the United States. Over the course of the past few years, shootings and lockdowns such as these have been a scourge upon the country and people have struggled with coming up with a solution. Lockdowns have become all too common as a means of protection when students and faculty are in danger and today is no different.

This incident follows similar incidents at Dodd Middle School in Connecticut, Windham Public Schools also in Connecticut, Pacoima Middle School in Los Angeles, Millennium Middle School in Florida, and US Grant High School in Oklahoma, which are just some of the places where events such as this have occurred.

Nothin’ To See Here, Just A Little Old Lady Killing A 580 Pound Gator

Facebook

Judy Cochran, a 73-year-old grandmother in Texas, is going viral after she shot and killed a 12-foot alligator who she believes ate her mini horse.

Cochran, who is the mayor of Livingston, Texas, killed the 580-pound gator on Sunday, September 16. She says she suspects it killed and ate her mini horse three years ago.

Cochran insists that the hunt was legal, as gator hunting season in Polk County — about 60 miles northeast of Houston — is from September 10 to September 30.

In addition, Cochran said that you must have a permit and a tag when hunting gator, and she had both when shooting the 580-pound reptilian.

via Houston Chronicle:

“We think this is the gator that ate one of our miniature horses several years ago, as big as this gator was, he could’ve easily eaten it,”she said. “Typically the gators don’t bother us, but we’ve been looking for (this one).”

As an elected official, Cochran wants to make sure the public knows this was a safe, ethical hunt.

“There are a lot of requirements to kill a gator in Polk County,” she explained. “We’re one of 12 counties that has a hunting season for alligators, between Sept. 10 and 30. You have to have a permit and tags from a wildlife biologist, and you have to catch it on a hook first. We don’t just go to the ranch and hunt a gator.”

Handlers caught the gator on a hook with a seasoned raccoon Sunday night and alerted Cochran she could proceed with the kill.

Cochran already knows the fate of her catch: “Moye Taxidermy will be processing it, we’ll eat the meat, have the head mounted and have the ridgeback part of the tail in my office. We’ll have the hide tanned to make some boots out of it, you can only make boots from the belly.”

Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) enough, this is not the first time the Cochran family has been in the news for killing alligators. Back in 2009, Cochran’s five-year-old grandson earned himself an appearance on The Today Show after he shot and killed a 12 feet, 7 inches long alligator.

Cody Wilson, the Austin man behind a 3D printed gun company, has been accused of child sexual assault. On Wednesday, Sept. 19, CBS Austin reported that local police responded to a counselor who said a female client under the age of 17 said she had sex with a 30-year-old male. She later told the Center for Child Protection that she was paid $500 by the man after their sexual encounter.

According to the victim, the two met on SugarDaddyMeet.com before exchanging text messages.

After arranging to meet in person and sending sexually explicit photos, the two met at a hotel. The website further details their encounter claiming:

According to the victim, she and Wilson met in person at Bennu Coffee and left together in a black Ford Edge sport vehicle. They later arrived at the Archer Hotel using the hotel’s valet service and walked together into a room and engaged in sexual intercourse and oral sex, police say. After they were done, the victim claims Wilson gave her five $100 bills.

Cody Wilson made headlines in 2018 after his company, Defense Distributed, received the attention of the State Department for distributing a 3D-printed single-shot pistol called the Liberator. The State Department ordered Wilson to pull the blueprints offline. After Wilson decided to sue the government, he reached a settlement which granted him the right to distribute the gun files via flash drives.

Wilson was born on January 31, 1988, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Wilson graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2010. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and was president of the school’s Student Government Association.

Brave/Police

Grant William Robicheaux, a 38-year-old Orthopedic surgeon who starred on the Bravo reality TV show Online Dating Rituals of the American Male, and his girlfriend Cerissa Laura Riley, 31, have been accused of and subsequently charged for allegedly drugging, sexually assaulting and raping potentially thousands of female victims over the last few years.

According to California investigators, Riley and Robicheaux have potentially assaulted victims that they met at restaurants in Newport Beach, Burning Man, the Splash House festival and the Dirtybird Campout festival over the last couple years.

Police say videos found on the couple’s phones lead them to believe they’ve potentially taken advantage of up to 1,000 women.

Riley, 31, and Robicheaux, 38, have been charged with rape by use of drugs, assault with intent to commit a sexual offense, and possession of a controlled substance for sale.

via Orange County Register:

In April 2016 the couple met a 32-year-old woman at a Newport Beach restaurant and invited her to a party on a boat. Once she was intoxicated, prosecutors allege, the pair “escorted” the woman to Robicheaux’s apartment, supplied her with “multiple drugs” and then raped and orally copulated with her while she was too intoxicated to resist.

The 32-year-old woman contacted the Newport Beach Police Department the day after the alleged sexual encounter, and was found through a forensic examination to have multiple controlled substances in her system.

On Oct. 2, 2016, prosecutors allege Robicheaux and Riley met a woman at a Newport Beach bar, and drank with her “until the victims was no longer conscious.” They brought her back to Robicheaux’s apartment, prosecutors said, and sexually assaulted her until she woke up and screamed for help, prompting a neighbor to call police.

On Jan. 9, 2018, police searched Robicheaux’s apartment and found “large quantities of illegal drugs” – described by Rackauckas as ecstasy, date-rape drugs and cocaine – and two “illegal, unregistered assault rifles,” along with four other firearms and some large-capacity magazines, prosecutors said.

Additionally, Robicheaux is accused of possessing two illegal assault rifles, four more firearms, and several large-capacity magazines.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said that the victims “might have felt a false sense of security” around the pair because they are “clean-cut and good looking.”

“We have all heard of a wolf dressed up in sheep’s clothing,” Rackauckas said. “Well, a wolf can wear scrubs or doctors’ clothing. Or the wolf can be a beautiful woman,” Rackauckas said.

Robicheaux faces up to 40 years in prison and Riley faces over 30 years in prison.

Both Robicheaux and Riley scheduled to appear in court on October 25.

Police have released video relating to the Wendy Martinez stabbing. The 35-year-old was jogging in Washington, DC when she was fatally stabbed. A person of interest can be seen wearing a yellow shirt and dark pants with sandals and socks walking down the street from what appears to be the scene of the crime.

According to FOX5DC, Martinez did not previously know her attacker. Police do not believe that robbery was a motive and they believe it was a random attack. Before dying from her injuries, Martinez was able to get to a Chinese restaurant where customers attempted to help her. The suspect fled the scene and left the knife used in the killing.

Martinez was bleeding from the neck before she collapsed and fell unconscious.

She later died in the hospital from her wounds.

“It is more likely a random act than anything else, but we’re going to look at all possibilities,” Police Chief Peter Newsham said at a press conference.

Martinez was the chief of staff for the software company FiscalNote.

“The entire FiscalNote family is shocked and deeply saddened to learn that Wendy Martinez, our Chief of Staff, was killed last night. Wendy was an invaluable member of our team and a vibrant member of the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy’s family and friends,” the company said in a statement released on social media Wednesday.

Martinez had recently got engaged to her fiancé, according to WPTV. Family provided heart-breaking photos that show her celebrating her engagement one and a half weeks before she was murdered.

“We were planning a wedding, and now we have to plan a funeral,” a family member said.

Tommia Dean, a former Kennesaw State cheerleader, made headlines for suing the university over differences regarding her protest against police brutality and racial discrimination during the national anthem. Dean made an appearance on The View to discuss her protest and her reason for taking a knee.

“After seeing the many killings and the many attacks against minorities by police officers, I thought it was crazy to have that many, and I didn’t think that it was right for minorities to have to walk around and be terrified every day,” she said during her appearance. “And to see a police officer and not know how should I act, what I should do, because it’s a burden to have to walk around and be scared all the time. So I just didn’t think it was right at all.”

In the lawsuit, Dean claims that her civil rights were violated by the university and that Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren and former state Rep. Earl Ehrhart attempted to stop the protests because the five cheerleaders who kneeled were black. The school initially decided to keep cheerleaders off of the field, but ultimately changed their decision.

“I never want to come across as disrespectful to the military, that is not what this protest is about. It is simply about standing up for police brutality against minorities. That is simply it,” Dean said.

Two Big Time Marvel Characters Are Set To Star In Their Own TV Shows

Marvel Studios

With the future of entertainment consisting of streaming, streaming, streaming, and streaming, every major company in Hollywood is trying to figure out a way to convert their content to the cloud, including Disney.

Despite making almost a billion dollars on seemingly every Star Wars, Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Pixar film they release, Mickey Mouse isn’t resting on his laurels, as Disney announced in August 2017 that they would be launching their own streaming service in 2019.

That’s right, Disney is launching their very own version Netflix that will be filled approximately 7000 episodes of television and 500 movies, as well as developing their own original shows and movies And two of those original shows are going to be about two of the biggest Avengers in the MCU: Loki and Scarlet Witch.

via Variety:

The entertainment giant is in early development on an ambitious plan for a number of limited series centered on popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These series will likely include shows centered on Loki and the Scarlet Witch, along with other beloved superheroes who have yet to appear in their own standalone movies. Marvel and Disney had no comment.

There’s an important distinction from other Marvel small-screen efforts, however. The actors who portrayed these heroes and villains in the Avengers films and their spin-offs, such as Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, are expected to play them in the streaming shows.

Moreover, though sources close to the production are staying mum on the cost of the programming, the budgets are expected to be hefty rivaling those of a major studio productions. Each series is expected to include six to eight episodes. Marvel Studios will produce the shows and Kevin Feige, the guru of all things MCU, is expected to take a hands-on role in their development.

The news of the MCU spin-offs come after Disney previously announced “multiple” Star Wars shows (with one being helmed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau), a TV show based on High School Musical and a live-action adaptation of Lady and the Tramp film.

All of this original programming plus Disney’s massive library of original content is making this service seem like a no-brainer.

And it’s like, yo, if I would have watched interviews sooner, bro, we were so alike
It’s unfortunate because it’s like, yo, when people die, that’s when you’re there, you know?
‘Cause your remorse kinda makes you check ’em out

[Bridge: XXXTENTACION]

Darling, your love is like walking a bed of nails
And I just can’t keep on fighting

[Chorus: Lil Peep & XXXTENTACION]

Come, let’s watch the rain as it’s falling down
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Sunlight on your skin when I’m not around, yeah
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Shit don’t feel the same when you’re out of town
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
So come, let’s watch the rain as it’s falling down
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh

Victoria Arlen is one of the youngest, brightest stars on ESPN after overcoming plenty of personal adversity to earn a job at the Worldwide Leader in Sports at just 21 years old. Arlen, a Paralympian gold medalist, was hired by ESPN in December 2015 where she covered the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. She has also covered the X Games and Invictus Games for ESPN, while adding coverage on ESPN College GameDay and the SEC Network.

ABC

59-year-old Bruce Rogal of Glen Moore, Pennsylvania, has been identified as the person who shot and killed his elderly parents at the Bellingham Retirement Community before being killed. At this time, police are investigating whether Rogal died of gunfire with police after he engaged in gun battle or if he took his own life.

According to Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan, Rogal had received an order finalizing his divorce that awarded the home to his ex-wife and “that appears to be what set him off today.”

Hogan said Rogal then first went to the house where his ex-wife was staying where he found her in the driveway and shot at her but missed.

Following his attempted murder of his ex-wife, Rogal walked into the Bellingham Retirement Community and fatally shot his parents William and Nancy Rogal, who were in their late 80s.

via ABC:

According to the D.A., around 5:45 p.m. Rogal drove to his ex-wife’s home and, as she was in the driveway changing the oil in her car, he fired six shots at her. She was not hurt in the incident, but police say some of the bullets hit nearby houses.

Hogan says, around 6:15 p.m., Rogal drove to the Bellingham Retirement Community in East Goshen Township and shot his parents, William and Nancy, both in their late 80s, to death in their apartment. He then fled.

Around 6:30 p.m., police issued a lockdown in a two-mile radius of the Bellingham facility while searching for Rogal. West Chester Area School District sent an alert stating that they locked down schools in the area, and members of the band at East High School were being contained as part of the lockdown.

After an intense search through Chester County and surrounding states, authorities found Rogal around 1 a.m. on Thursday, September 20, after he crashed his car into a home.

At this time, District Attorney Tom Hogan will not confirm whether or not Rogal died due to shots fired by officers, he died in the car crash, or he took his own life.
