Roy Oliver Verdict: Full Story & Must-See Details

Roy Oliver, a former Balch Springs police officer who shot and killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards in Texas, has learned his verdict. On Tuesday, Aug. 28, a Dallas County jury announced that they have found Oliver guilty of murder following more than 10 hours of deliberation.

Oliver was found not guilty on charges of aggravated assault and manslaughter.

“This innocent kid was not doing anything wrong, nothing. He deserved the opportunity to go to college,” prosecutor Mike Snipes said. “He deserved the opportunity to make Odell Edwards a grandfather, and you took that away from him. You murdered him.”

Edwards was killed when he was in a car full of teens leaving a party in April of 2017. Oliver fired a rifle at the car and a bullet struck and killed the 15-year-old.

From the Dallas Morning News:

While talking to the party’s host inside the house, gunshots rang out. The shots were later discovered to have been fired from a nearby nursing home.

The officers ran from the house — Oliver to get his patrol rifle — and toward the nursing home. Within 54 seconds, Jordan was dead.

Gross was trying to stop the Chevrolet Impala that Jordan, his brothers and friends were in when Oliver fired into the car. Oliver said he thought the car was going to hit his partner.

Oliver’s defense claimed that the decision to shoot at the vehicle came out of fear for his partner’s safety. However, video that was reviewed by Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber, shows that the vehicle was driving away from the police.

Edwards was in the vehicle with his two brothers and two friends.

Floyd Mayweather Offers To Help Conor McGregor Train For Khabib Nurmagomedov

WENN

Could Floyd Mayweather help his former rival Conor McGregor? In a recent interview, the undefeated boxing legend offered a helping hand to former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor, who is set to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 229 in Las Vegas this October.

It’s a bit of an odd offer, considering Nurmagomedov has a strong grappling base and McGregor’s main focus should be on stopping the takedown, but regardless Mayweather is there if the Irishman wants.

“I know that UFC has a training facility, but we’d like him to work at the Mayweather boxing club,” Mayweather told TMZ Sports. “From what I know, (Nurmagomedov is) a hell of a grappler, and he can wrestle. But you know, the fans want to see you stand up and fight. That’s what they want to see.

“Conor McGregor’s a tough competitor. Conor McGregor’s not going to back down from anyone. He’s not scared. He’s a warrior.”

It’s a nice offer and some flattering words, but Mayweather offers McGregor nothing when it comes to the upcoming bout. That said, we all know that Mayweather loves attention, so this was likely all just a ploy to get back in the headlines.

And who knows, his next move may be trying to appear in front of cameras when the UFC heads to T-Mobile Arena for the 155-pound title fight. He’s already angling for tickets.

“I’ll talk with (UFC President) Dana (White),” Mayweather said. “I may talk with Conor and get some tickets.”

Remember This Guy From ’40-Year-Old Virgin’? He Just Had His LIFE SENTENCE Commuted

Universal Pictures

File this one under ‘things I did not expect to learn today’.

We’ve all seen The 40-Year-Old Virgin, right? I mean, who hasn’t? It was an instant classic from the moment it came you. Seriously, if you haven’t seen The 40-Year-Old Virgin by this point, your chances of being a psycho/sociopath is quite high.

Anyway, in that movie, Steve Carrell’s titular virgin works at a fictionalized version of Best Buy with a cast of characters that include Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, and Jane Lynch.

However, despite that star-studded list, the funniest character were arguably these two Indian guys who were constantly bickering.

Well, as it turns out, the taller/younger of the two actors has been on death f*cking row for the last eight years for stabbing his girlfriend 20 times. Life comes at you fast, eh?

In August 2008, Shelley Malil’s girlfriend Kendra Beebe was stabbed 23 times at her home after Malil found her with another man. And now, 8 years after being given a life sentence, Malil will be released and remain on parole for five years.

via The San Diego Tribune:

Shelley Malil, 53, who is probably best known for a supporting role in the movie “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” appeared before a panel of three parole commissioners at a hearing at Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in Riverside County.

The panel had convened to revisit a previous ruling, from earlier this year, that Malil should be paroled in part because of assessments that found he posed a low risk of committing violence in the future.

On Tuesday, after hearing comments for more than an hour — including from Malil and the woman he attacked — the panel agreed not to rescind the parole offered to Malil earlier this year. The decision was unanimous.

Malil will be released in about two weeks and will remain on supervised parole for five years, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Now, every time you watch The 40-Year-Old Virgin, you won’t be able to watch it without thinking “Hey, that’s the dude that tried to kill his girlfriend”, so sorry, I guess?

Let’s end this article on a lighter note, shall we?

Parents Of Students Who Died From Hazing Deliver Powerful Speech To Fraternity

The parents of Tim Piazza, Max Gruver and Marquise Braham — young college students who have recently lost their lives due to alcohol-related hazing — delivered a tear-jerking speech to a room of about 500 fraternity members.

Love, Mom & Dad,, a keynote address given Evelyn and Jim Piazza, RaeAnn and Steve Gruver, and Maille and Rich Braham, was presented at the 83rd John O. Moseley Leadership School in front of a crowd of approximately 500 undergraduate students.

via The Record Online:

As a sign of their promise, everyone stood and recited our creed, The True Gentleman, and committed to:

– Recognizing and admitting when the chapter has a hazing problem and seeking out the resources to help stop the behavior before things go too far.

– Identifying and eliminating unproductive or unhealthy traditions and having an honest conversation to create alternatives to ineffective traditions.

– Recruiting the right people and putting the right people in leadership positions.

– Having more opportunities to provide intentional and open discussion relating to getting to know the “whole self”, the “real self.”

– Respecting every brother, no matter how long they have been a member, and engaging the older brothers to set the example and enact change in the culture.

– Creating positive brotherhood-building activities by bringing in positive alumni activities, increase transparency of brotherhood-building activities, partnering with other fraternities and sororities to create a healthy campus-wide Greek practice.

– Stop minding my own business and hold our members and members of other organizations accountable for their actions, because the actions of one reflect on everyone.

– Taking what I have learned home to our brothers, our chapters, our Greek systems, and communities starting today because it starts with ME.

Following the conclusion of the program, the parents urged those in attendance to understand that “this feeling you have right now will fade” and that “words without action are meaningless.”

Columbia University Administrator Had Illicit Sexual Relationship With Student, Lawsuit Claims

A new lawsuit alleges that a Columbia University Dean used his administrative position and monetary gifts to coerce a “desperate” student into a sexual relationship. With the promise of scholarships, housing help, and cash gifts, Dean Tom Harford allegedly pursued a romantic relationship with a student under shady circumstances. In the court of public opinion, this act likely falls under the category of consent through coercion. Though the plaintiff may have willingly been a participant in this relationship, the power structure of a university dean and student lends credence to the lawsuit’s allegations of misconduct.

What Happened?

The plaintiff, 25, filed a $50 million lawsuit against Columbia University claiming that Dean of Students Tom Harford used financial favors in exchange for a sexual relationship with a younger female student. This student, referred to in the lawsuit as Jane Doe, was in dire straits after housing issues stemming from a separate rape allegation at an acquaintance’s apartment. After reporting this rape to the police, Jane Doe went to her Dean of Students for housing help. Sensing her desperation, Harford offered $500 cash as well as the promise of scholarships and housing to the student in exchange for illicit sexual acts. These gifts and promises allegedly began several months before and continued throughout the summer. Columbia University came under fire in the lawsuit for “failing to protect a student” from the sexually inappropriate advances of one of their administrators. In the suit, Doe claims that the University was aware of the inappropriate texts, calls, and harassment but failed to act on it.

Who is Tom Harford?

Tom Harford is a former administrator at Columbia University where he held the position of Dean of Students in the School of General Studies. Harford was removed from his position before the 2018 fall semester when Columbia University was made aware of these allegations. The official reasoning behind his removal as stated by the University is “unacceptable conduct.” Not much information can be found about Harford, as Columbia has already removed his page from the School of General Studies Online Directory.

Rotten Tomatoes Is Overhauling Its Review System

Rotten Tomatoes

Does anyone remember life before Rotten Tomatoes? I sure as hell don’t.

First off, Rotten Tomatoes has been around longer than you think, having allegedly been founded in August 1998. However, it really took off in 2010 when it was acquired by Flixster, who were later acquired by Warners Bros.

Anyway, about eight years after their first acquisition, it’s the 362nd (per Alexa) ranked website in the world and the 138th ranked website in the United States. Not too shabby.

Well, maybe it is too shabby, as the movie aggregator just announced massive changes to how they’ll be doing things behind the scenes.

via Uproxx:

RT announced on Tuesday that it is shifting its aggregation focus to lean more heavily on individuals over outlets, and to seek a much broader and more diverse base of critics. Real, human critics. The Fandango-owned site will add hundreds of critics to its aggregation pool, raising its underrepresented demographics (notably women and people of color) by a minimum of 20 percent, as previously announced at Sundance and TIFF. Prior to this change, women accounted for 22 percent of the approved critics, while people of color accounted for just 18 percent of the pool. In addition, Rotten Tomatoes intends to launch a demographics study, and to launch an initiative to help critics attend film festivals if they otherwise lack the means.

Some of these new critics will come from new platforms, including non-traditional media formats like critics who deliver podcast and online video reviews of movies. While not every podcast will constitute inclusion in the aggregation pool, it’s certainly a solid means of attempting to combat the stodgy arms-length image of “film critic” that leaves many movie fans turned off.

You can read the full statement from Rotten Tomatoes here.

Southern Illinois University Bans Displays Of Activism In Response To Anthem Protests

Instagram Photo

In response to three of its cheerleaders taking a knee during the National Anthem last fall, Southern Illinois University has issued changes to its athletic code of conduct, inserting language prohibiting displays of activism while participating in games and/or events.

Some of the new language states:

“Members of the department including student-athletes cheerleaders and spirit members must remain neutral on any issue political in nature when wearing SIU official uniforms and when competing/performing in official department of athletics events and activities…Any display (verbal or non-verbal) of activism (either for or against) a political issue will not be tolerated and may result in dismissal from the program.”

Speaking to the Daily Egyptian, the student news site of Southern Illinois University, new athletics administrator Liz Jarnigan had this to say:

“We are just not wanting anybody who represents the department of athletics and wears the colors to get involved in heated discourse on one side or the other…It’s not the appropriate place and we are not wanting to make political statements of any kind when were representing the university, the Department of Athletics, any academic institution and southern Illinois in general.”

Alaysia Brandy, one of the cheerleaders who knelt during the fall, had stated that she had decided to not kneel again during the anthem before the new code of conduct had been issued. “It was already decided upon to not take a knee again because we accomplished what we were going for by bringing attention to our cause and now it’s time for change,” Brandy stated.

However, she stood by her opinion of why the protests were made in the first place. She said:

“Background checks on said police officers and when it does come down to them breaking the law and abusing their power they need to be held accountable to the fullest to show other officers you can’t get away with crime, that you can’t hide behind a badge,”

Last fall, as the protests surrounding the national anthem began to become a bigger controversy, Southern Illinois University attempted to hide the cheerleaders from the public eye. They were barred from courtside at basketball games and were brought out after the anthem had been sung.

The Southern Illinois Salukis begin their 2018 football season on Thursday, Aug. 29 against the Murray State Racers.

Meek Mill Donates 6,000 Backpacks To Philadelphia Area Students

It’s been quite the interesting year for rapper Meek Mill. He found himself at the center of the debate surrounding prison reform as many celebrities and public figures fought to get him released from jail. Meek was serving a sentence of 2-4 years for parole violations, following an arrest for assault.

As first reported by Complex, Meek Mill and his Dream Chasers team announced that they were donating 6,000 backpacks to students in need at 12 different Philadelphia public schools. Meek knows what it’s like to grow up without the resources necessary to get a proper education and he’s aiming to make sure that doesn’t happen to the next generation. He said:

“Growing up in Philly, I’ve watched families struggle to make ends meet and buy basic school supplies for their kids…Those memories stay with me and that’s why I’m committed to giving back to families in my hometown, putting smiles on kids’ faces and helping them start the school year on the right note with the right supplies.”

Instagram Photo

This isn’t the first time that Meek Mill has been involved with charity and giving back to his community. For the past five years — including while he was serving time in jail — Meek and his Dream Chasers donated turkeys to hundreds of families around Philadelphia, ensuring that they had a proper Thanksgiving dinner.

Philadelphia school superintendent Dr. William R. Hite said

“We are excited that so many of our students will have brand new backpacks and school supplies for this school year, and are grateful to Meek Mill and the Dream Chasers for giving back to the community. This visit is something our students won’t soon forget and is a wonderful way to kick off the new school year.”

Since getting out of jail, Meek has been involved a variety of foundations aimed at reforming the criminal justice system and how punishments are levied. He has also released some new music since his release, including a four-song EP titled Legend of Summer in July 2018.

DOJ Says Harvard Curbs Asian-American Admissions

$

Back in December 2017, the United States Justice Department concluded that Harvard University’s use of affirmative action was “out of compliance” with federal law.

Now, eight months later, attorneys for the Department of Justice said the record of evidence shows Harvard’s race-based admissions process significantly disadvantages Asian-American applicants compared to applicants of other racial groups.

The DOJ released a 40-page statement of interest on Thursday, August 30.

“The evidence, moreover, shows that Harvard provides no meaningful criteria to cabin its use of race; uses a vague ‘personal rating’ that harms Asian-American applicants’ chances for admission and may be infected with racial bias; engages in unlawful racial balancing; and has never seriously considered race-neutral alternatives in its more than 45 years of using race to make admissions decisions,” the attorneys said.

In addition, The Hill reports the Department of Justice urged the court to reject Harvard’s request to issue a summary judgment in its favor without going to trial.

Affirmative action is the widely known policy of favoring members of a disadvantaged group of people who have suffered from past or current discrimination. It is meant to bridge inequalities in employment and pay, increase access to education, promote diversity, and redress apparent past wrongs, harms, or hindrances.
