Candler County Sheriff’s Office

Bradley Justin Cochran has been found deceased. On Monday, Aug. 27, the Candler County Sheriff’s Office announced that Cochran, who was a suspect wanted for allegedly trying to abduct three Georgia Southern University students, was located. Cochran was found dead in the city limits of Metter but there was no cause of death at the time of the sheriff’s office’s announcement.

Cochran was 40 years old.

Late Sunday night, the Statesboro Police Department sent out a message regarding the potential abduction of three females who had since been found safe. When the news first surfaced, an alert was sent out for a “dangerous” man who was last seen wearing khaki shorts and a white shirt.

“He is considered dangerous,” the Candler County Sheriff’s Office said at the time he was still on the run. “He was last spotted in the city limits of Metter,” which is about 187 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

The incidents occurred at a Food World parking lot, according to the university.

Cochran was also wanted for offenses in Bulloch and Candler counties.

Where Is Georgia Southern Located?

Georgia Southern University is a public research university in Georgia with multiple campuses across the southern half of the state. The flagship campus is located in Statesboro, while others include the Armstrong Campus in Savannah and the Liberty Campus in Hinesville. The university is home to more than 27,000 students with over 140 academic majors in baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral programs.

Seth Frotman, who has served as the student loan ombudsman at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for the past three years, resigned from his position on Monday, Aug. 27. The top student loan watchdog resigned with a letter that blamed the Trump administration and current leadership of turning its back on the financial futures of students. Frotman led the CFPB’s Office for Students and Young Consumers, overseeing thousands of complaints from students who had received loans while he was in his role.

Frotman says that the current leadership “has turned its back on young people and their financial futures.”

“Unfortunately, under your leadership, the Bureau has abandoned the very consumers it is tasked by Congress with protecting,” the resignation letter read, via The Hill. “Instead, you have used the Bureau to serve the wishes of the most powerful financial companies in America.”

The letter was addressed to CFPB acting director Mick Mulvaney.

NPR had more detail on Frotman’s role at the CFPB.

Frotman has served as Student Loan Ombudsman for the past three years. Congress created the position in 2010, in the wake of the financial crisis, as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. As Ombudsman and Assistant Director, Frotman oversaw the CFPB’s Office for Students and Young Consumers and reviewed thousands of complaints from student borrowers about the questionable practices of private lenders, loan servicers and debt collectors.

Since 2011, the bureau has handled more than 60,000 student loan complaints and has returned more than $750 million to borrowers.

Unfortunately, the Trump administration announced last August through the U.S. Department of Education that it would stop sharing information with the bureau about the oversight of student loans and claimed the CFPB was “overreaching and unaccountable.”

The CFPB has not responded to the news at this time.

Following The Northern Trust tournament held in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Amanda Balionis — a CBS Sports reporter who I’ve frankly never heard of — took to Instagram to fire back at a meme of herself making the rounds on the internet.

The meme features her interviewing the #1 golfer in the world Dustin Johnson. Seems benign enough, until you notice Johnson’s wife, the STUNNING Paulina Gretzky, lurking in the background like a hawk, arms folded and all.

Posing in a photo with Paulia, Balionis wrote: “Our joint statement on a recent meme: Hi Haters ”

Wise move from Baionis to nip this in the bud as Paulia legitimately seems like a girl crazy enough to kill someone.

As if the fact that it’s Monday didn’t suck enough, reports have surfaced that the final season of Game of Thrones will be not premiere until later on in 2019.  The show will definitely be coming to an end next year and had been rumored to be coming out in April, but as it turns out, that will not be the case.

Speaking to the Huffington Post, the visual effects supervisor for Game of Thrones, Joe Bauer, said “We’re going to be toiling away on Season 8 until May of 2019, so it’s eight or nine months away…But the prequel is starting to shoot in February, at least the pilot. So we’ll still have quite a lot to do on Season 8 when they’re beginning.” He also went on to say “So much of it comes down to timing and all that stuff. The situation changes every week. I know I’m not doing anything else but ‘Thrones’ until May of next year.”

SPOILERS AHEAD

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the final season of the show ever since the incredible finale aired last year. It’s certainly going to be hard to top an ice dragon destroying a giant portion of the Wall and then a zombie army finally making its long-planned invasion of Westeros.

However, as we have learned from watching Thrones, it’s that we will be left guessing until the very end. Huffington Post continued to speak with Bauer on not just technical details and premiere date, but how the show will actually end. He said:

“I think the whole series has aimed toward this. I obviously can’t say what it is. I think there will be divisions because people have grown to identify and like and hate various characters, so everybody has their version of how they want it to end based on those things, but looking at it objectively, I think the way it ends is the way it must end, so I’m just going to leave it at that.”

Season 8 of Game of Thrones will air in the first half of 2019 and will have six episodes. Don’t worry, each episode will be around an hour and a half each, so we’re certainly not getting short changed.

If you’re still hungry for more Thrones, HBO released a teaser for its programming for next year which features a tiny snippet from Season 8.

Taiwanese designer Lure Hsu gained a following online because people couldn’t believe how young she looked for her age. The 43-year-old has the kind of glowing, fresh-faced skin a 23-year-old student might enjoy.

In an interview with Taiwan’s Friday magazine, the middle-aged woman suggested the majority of skin problems could be solved by frequent moisturizing.

She frequently showcases some of her favorite brands – which include SK-II and La Prairie – on Instagram to her 714,000 fans.

Lure’s alabaster-colored skin may seem as though it hasn’t spent much time in the sun, but Lure said she indulges with a small dose every once in a while.

In an effort to combat the sun’s effects, the 43-year-old always applies sunscreen before stepping outdoors.

Look, I don’t know if it’s a healthy diet, great skin care, or witchcraft that’s keeping this chick so young, but whatever it is, I’m all in on it, because Lure Hsu is absolute flames.

Spotify has released its official list of the most streamed songs of summer 2018 and there were plenty of familiar and expected names. These were the songs that dominated not just the Spotify charts but also made plenty of playlists all summer long. Artists like Drake, Maroon 5, and Post Malone make appearances on the list with Drake taking home the number one spot. Cardi B pulled in not one, but two spots thanks to her collaboration with Maroon 5.

Drake’s “In My Feelings” was the clear winner and front runner of the Summer, thanks in no small part to the viral social media challenge it inspired. Spotify reported that the song was streamed over 393 million times between June 1st and August 20th. Considering the fact that the song was released on July 10th, that is a massively impressive feat. The challenge that seemed to take over every single social media platform certainly cranked up the streams of the song, with almost every celebrity under the sun posting videos of themselves dancing along to the song.

Coming in at a distant second place was Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You (feat. Cardi B)” which had nearly 100 million less streams at 293 million during the same period. Also making appearances on the list include Australian pop band 5 Seconds of Summer, Tyga and Offset, Demi Lovato, and the late rapper Xxxtentacion.

Get ready to see a lot of Melanie Collins this NFL season. Collins, who previously worked as a college sports sideline reporter for CBS Sports Network, fill-in host for SportsNation and First Take on ESPN, and Yahoo! Sports, among others, joined the CBS Sports team in June 2018 to serve as a reporter for The NFL on CBS.

Collins will be teamed with Greg Gumbel, Trent Green and Bruce Arians for the 2018-19 NFL regular season.

While at Yahoo! Sports, Collins provided coverage from Olympics, World Cup, Super Bowl and World Series. She also covered the NBA for Turner Sports, college football and basketball for the Big Ten Network, and Major League Baseball. On Monday, August 27, Rick Davis, Senator John McCain’s former campaign manager, read the senator’s farewell letter during a news conference with reporters.

It was the first time McCain’s final words have been publicly read:

“My fellow Americans, whom I have gratefully served for 60 years and especially my fellow Arizonans: Thank you for the privilege of serving you and for the rewarding life of service in uniform and service in public office has allowed me to lead. I have tried to serve our country honorably. I have made mistakes, but I hope my love for America will be weighed favorably against them.

McCain, an American war hero, served as a United States Senator from Arizona from 1987 until his death.

During his time in the Navy, McCain was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. While on a bombing mission during Operation Rolling Thunder over Hanoi in October 1967, McCain was shot down, seriously injured, and captured by the North Vietnamese and remained a prisoner of war until 1973.

In 1982 — 9 years after his release from Vietnam — McCain was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served two terms. He entered the U.S. Senate in 1987 and won reelection five times, the last time in 2016.

A study from the University of Tennessee’s Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research has shown the incredible impact that the school has on its local economy. According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, the university “was responsible for nearly $1.7 billion in income statewide in 2017, fueling 32,867 jobs and generating $166.4 million in tax revenue.”

The total figure includes employee pay, off-campus spending by students and visitors, and university spending on construction and supplies.

Tennessee’s latest contribution to the economy is up $100 million from 2015.

“The flow of spending through the university, our students, and our visitors has a significant and positive ripple effect throughout the community and state,” Interim Chancellor Wayne Davis said in an announcement regarding the study. “But these numbers capture only a fraction of what UT contributes to the state. Our biggest impact is educating our citizens and preparing Tennessee’s future labor force.”

More from the report:

In fall 2017 UT Knoxville had 28,321 students, more than half the total enrolled in the UT system. The UT Knoxville campus had 9,744 employees, including more than 1,500 full-time faculty. The university also has campuses in Chattanooga, Martin, Memphis and Tullahoma.

Also in 2017 UT paid $575 million in salaries and benefits, according to the study. Another $636 million went for construction projects, maintenance, utilities and supplies, the report said.

That number is not expected to slow down anytime soon.

The seven-page report says that more than $1 billion in construction is underway.

One of the best things you gain from the college experience outside of the obvious education is some lifelong friends and a sense of camaraderie. You are a part of something that is much bigger than you and being an alumnus of a prestigious college or university is something that no one will ever be able to take away from you. But, be sure you don’t fall into the same trap that some popular college alumni groups.

We all know there are your Ivy League grads or fans of a major college football program that walk around with a sense of obnoxious entitlement.

You know what I’m talking about: the ‘Bammers always yelling “Roll Tide,” the people who blindly support their university football team even if their head coach may have been part of a sexual assault cover-up, and Ivy Leaguers who go with the “I have the best education. Trust me,” retorts.

So which universities and colleges have the most obnoxious alumni?

Without further ado, let’s take a look.

10. Penn State University

There isn’t much more annoying than the “WE ARE!” chants that you hear ringing throughout Beaver Stadium. Penn State — rightfully — is recognized as the best football program in its state, but the loyal followers of the Nittany Lions should dial it back a few notches. Oh, and sorry, but Beaver Stadium is old and run down. You can feel the stadium shake as the crowd cheers, so maybe some renovations are in order — preferably before 2023.

And on a more serious note: the Penn State alumni base really saw the public perception of it turn during the Jerry Sandusky scandal. In a trend that we will touch on later on down the list, the alumni base and fans were bending over backward to justify the missteps taken by Joe Paterno as he ignored decades of sexual assault by one of his top assistants.

9. Yale University

And no one wants to hear about how your Ivy League school is better than the other. It isn’t. But silver lining: you aren’t the most annoying.

One of the most annoying things about Michigan alumni is that they happen to be everywhere. Go back to Ann Arbor, no one wants to hear that nonsense.

6. Duke University

Like Stanford, Duke takes pride in their academics which is understandable, but do you remember that whole pretentious thing? Yeah, that fits here, too. For those who follow college basketball, you know that the Blue Devils are one of the most hated programs in the nation, so it’s always great to see the team crash-and-burn out of the tournament to see the smug smiles wiped off the faces of their fans and alumni.

5. University of Notre Dame

Notre Dame alumni seem to groom their children to love the school from birth. You really don’t have a choice. And any chance they get, they will go on a rant about how Notre Dame is the best school in the country, with the most beautiful buildings, and beautiful campus. You know what? Shove it. I’m sick of listening to Mike Golic blabber non-stop about the school every morning on the radio, so he’s ruined it for the rest of you.

There’s no need to beat a dead horse.

3. University of Alabama

“Rollllllllll Tide.” It should make your skin crawl even reading it if you live outside of the state’s borders. The problem with Alabama alumni is that they are unabashedly loyal to the school because they’ve never been outside of a 100-mile radius. We get it, the University of Alabama is the only thing your state has going for you. And the football team is pretty damn good, but let’s ease up on the “Roll Tides” for the sake of humanity.

Oh, and don’t even get me started on “Rammer Jammer.” PS: Why is your mascot an elephant?

2. Ohio State University

Remember that whole JoePa-Penn State thing earlier on the list? Yeah, well that applies here. It is fresh in our minds, too, thanks to head football coach Urban Meyer failing to take appropriate measures to address a history of domestic abuse allegations against his long-time friend and assistant Zach Smith. Not only did the Ohio State alumni stand by him, they held a rally to show support, they showed up to meetings to defend him and fight against a suspension, and still believe that he was unfairly prosecuted despite being given an embarrassingly short three-game suspension. This is a bad look on everyone.

Maria Taylor, a member of the ESPN College GameDay crew, is going to be with the network for years to come. On Tuesday, Aug. 28, the Worldwide Leader in Sports announced that network has signed a new deal with ESPN that will keep her around long-term.

“I have been blessed with so many opportunities to grow and evolve as a broadcaster and learn from so many incredible people,” said Taylor in a statement released on Tuesday. “I am excited to start the next chapter of my career with my ESPN family, and to continue working with the players, coaches, and programs that I am incredibly passionate about.”

She will remain in her roles with GameDay, College Football Live, ABC Saturday Night Football, Saturday Primetime and continue hosting for Big Monday, Thursday Showcase and the NCAA Women’s Final Four.

Taylor will also do fill-in duty on Get Up!, SportsCenter, and contribute during coverage of the NBA Draft and NBA Combine.

Before her carer in sports broadcasting, Taylor played volleyball and basketball for the Bulldogs. She was a member of the All-SEC team in each season, while also helping the USA Volleyball Junior National A2 team with the bronze medal during the Open Division of the US Volleyball Championships.

The 6-foot-2 Taylor ranked fourth all-time in Georgia volleyball history in career kills and total points.

Taylor is also the co-founder of Winning Edge, which aims to “educate, foster professional mentoring relationships, provide networking opportunities and enrichment scholarships to ethnic minorities and women who are seeking careers in the sports industry. ”

CMA

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, the 2018 CMA Awards nominations were unveiled. The awards were announced by Luke Bryan Dan + Shay and Sugarland. Leading the way was Chris Stapleton with seven nominations including Album, Male Vocalist, Song, Single and Entertainer of the Year.

The 2018 CMA Awards will take place Wednesday, Nov. 14 in Nashville, Tennessee. The awards show will air on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET. Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley will be hosting the awards ceremony once again — making it the 11th straight year for the duo.

Melanie Collins is a face and name that you should familiarize yourself with now, because the start of the 2018-19 NFL regular season is just around the corner. Collins is one of the newest additions to The NFL on CBS and will be joining the team of Greg Gumbel, Trent Green and Bruce Arians.

Along with her role on The NFL on CBS, Collins is the current host of Big Break and Driver vs. Driver on the Golf Channel.

While she is new to the NFL on CBS, this isn’t her first rodeo.

Collins previously worked as a college sports sideline reporter for CBS Sports Network, a fill-in host for SportsNation and First Take on ESPN, and for Yahoo! Sports. She also covered the NBA for Turner Sports, college football and basketball for the Big Ten Network, and Major League Baseball. She’s also a co-host on the Golf Channel and has hosted online segments for the PGA Tour and NASCAR.

A new study from George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health has determined Hurricane Maria killed a much larger number of people than initially reported in Puerto Rico. The original estimate was just 64 deaths, but the new study finds an estimated 2,975 deaths from September 2017 through February 2018. Elderly men and those who lived in low-income areas were at the greatest risk.

“Overall, we estimate that 40% of municipalities experienced significantly higher mortality in the study period than in the comparable period of the previous two years,” the report says.

CBS News explains how the study came to the new number.

To arrive at the 2,975 figure, the study looked at historical death patterns from 2010 to 2017 to estimate how many people would have died had Hurricane Maria not hit the island. That figure was then compared to the actual number of deaths from September 2017 through February 2018 — obtained in records provided by the Puerto Rico Vital Statistics Records division of the Puerto Rico Department of Health — to determine what the report describes as the “estimate of excess mortality due to the hurricane.”

“The official government estimate of 64 deaths from the hurricane is low primarily because the conventions used for causal attribution only allowed for classification of deaths attributable directly to the storm, e.g., those caused by structural collapse, flying debris, floods and drownings,” the report says. “During our broader study, we found that many physicians were not oriented in the appropriate certification protocol. This translated into an inadequate indicator for monitoring mortality in the hurricane’s aftermath.”

There is no way to determine the exact number of fatalities stemming from the storm and communication issues between the Puerto Rico Vital Statistics Registry which is involved in the death certification process, but it is clear the death toll is significantly larger than the number that was initially claimed.

Season two of the smash hit Netflix drama Ozark is set to premiere Friday, August 31, 2018 and fans are extremely excited. This new season of the crime drama comes thirteen months after the series premiere which hit Netflix catalogs in July of 2017. Jason Bateman plays Marty Byrde, a financial advisor who finds himself in trouble after a laundering scheme with the cartel goes wrong. Fans of the show have been clamoring for Byrde family drama since the end of the first season, and on August 31, 2018 they will get their wish.

Bateman’s acting resume before Ozark was littered with big and small screen comedies like Arrested Development, Horrible Bosses, and many others. Bateman shines as a criminal money launderer, earning critical praise for his performance. Linney, a three time Academy Award nominee, is no stranger to critically acclaimed dramatic roles.

Demystifying the Hipster

Okay, so maybe that GIF is a little aggressive. However, there is no denying that hipsters are a rare and, often misunderstood, social group. Their love of craft beers, bookstores, and music by “artists you’ve never heard of” can come off of asshole-ish, so how can we get to the bottom of the hipster phenomenon?

It teaches you how to climb, proper rope techniques, and how to boost your self-confidence. Sounds pretty good to me.

You might hate it but there’s no denying that the Harry Potter series has an absolutely massive impact on pop culture. The subject of intense analysis and scrutiny, the franchise has earned author J.K Rowling billions of dollars and, despite it ending years ago, still has resonance today.

EA Sports has decided to cancel the remaining three Madden Class qualifying events following a mass shooting over the weekend at a Madden Tournament in Jacksonville, Florida. The decision was made in order to review safety protocols.

“We’ve all been deeply affected by what took place in Jacksonville,” EA Sports CEO Andrew Wilson said in a statement. “This is the first time we’ve had to confront something like this as an organization, and I believe the first time our gaming community has dealt with a tragedy of this nature.”

It is expected that the entire e-gaming industry will have a look at strengthening and enhancing their security measures.

“I think the eSports industry as a whole is going to have to step back and take a look at further strengthening our security,” CompLexity Gaming founder and CEO Jason Lake told CNN. CompLexity sponsored a competitor who was injured on Sunday.

On Sunday, Aug. 26, 24-year-old David Kats open fired on a qualifying tournament with a semi-automatic pistol after being eliminated in the head-to-head round of the Madden 19 tourney. The shooting rampage killed two gamers — Elijah “True” Clayton, 22, and Taylor “SpotMePlzzz” Robertson, 28.

The tournament was taking place at GLHF Game Bar in Jacksonville Landing. The tournament was the Southeastern Qualifier for the Madden NFL Championship Series. The game was on XBOX One, with third-place winning $1,000 and the first- and second-place winners being flown to the Finals Qualification event.
