Arizona Senator John McCain died on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 81 years old. Shortly after his passing, his daughter Meghan McCain took to social media to pass tribute to her father, who was an American hero. McCain died following a battle with brain cancer.

“I was with my father at his end, as he was with me at my beginning,” The View host wrote. “All that I am is thanks to him. Now that he is gone, the task of my lifetime is to live up to his example, his expectations, and his love.”

McCain, a Vietnam war veteran and former presidential candidate, is survived by his wife, Cindy, and his children: Douglas, Andrew, Sidney, Meghan, John, James and Bridget.

You can read the full emotional and moving tribute below.

“My father, United States Senator John Sidney McCain III, departed this life today. I was with my father at his end, as he was with me at my beginning. In the thirty-three years we shared together, he raised me, taught me, corrected me, comforted me, encouraged me, and supported me in all things. He loved me, and I loved him. He taught me how to live. His love and his care, ever present, always unfailing, took me from a girl to a woman — and he showed me what it is to be a man.”

“All that I am is thanks to him. Now that he is gone, the task of my lifetime is to live up to his example, his expectations, and his love. My father’s passing comes with sorrow and grief for me, for my mother, for my brothers, and for my sisters. He was a great fire who burned bright, and we lived in his light and warmth for so very long. We know that his flame lives on, in each of us. The days and years to come will not be the same without my dad — but they will be good days, filled with life and love, because of the example he lived for us.”

“Your prayers, for his soul and for our family, are sincerely appreciated. My father is gone, and I miss him as only an adoring daughter can. But in this loss, and in this sorrow, I take comfort in this: John McCain, hero of the republic and to his little girl, wakes today to something more glorious than anything on this earth. Today the warrior enters his true and eternal life, greeted by those who have gone before him, rising to meet the Author of All Things: ‘The dream is ended: this is the morning.’”

Top 10 Best College Marching Bands Of All Time

$

0

There are certain things that make a College Football game better than a professional one. The student section, the school spirit, and of course the marching band. Nothing is better than hearing the band play your fight song before and during the game, and your alma mater at the end. A good marching band can change the game, literally. They set the atmosphere during the game with song choices and fervor and set halftime on fire with elaborate shows on the field. Here are some of the best Marching Bands from around the country.

Trojan Marching Band (USC)

The Spirit of Troy is always ready to put on a show for the school in the Hollywood hills. The active numbers can vary but reports put it at over 300 hundred. Hollywood’s marching band live up to their moniker as well. They are the only marching band to play on TWO platinum records as well, have performed with a litany of movie conductors and musical artists, and a movie list that looks better than most actor’s IMDB pages. Throw in some of the coolest Drum Major uniforms, having them dress up as Trojan Guards, and you have a good time.

The Ohio State University Marching Band

When you have one of the best Football Teams of all time you have to have a great marching band right? That’s the case for Ohio State. The Buckeyes have a band that’s over 200 members strong and is incredibly coordinated. Nothing is a better example of this than when the band spells out “Ohio” on the field. The move is called “Script Ohio” and it’s awesome.

Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band (Stanford University)

Instagram Photo

Calling themselves “The World’s Largest Rock Band” Standford’s marching band focuses much of their repertoire on classic rock songs. Not only do they play awesome songs but they also act like rock stars. They’ve made statements with their shows that have found them banned from other schools, they’ve gotten in trouble for partying too hard, and are apparently banned from Disneyland… The Stanford band plays hard… and lives hard.

Pride of Southland (University of Tennessee)

Instagram Photo

UT calls their band the Pride of the Southland and they should have a lot of pride in their 350 member band. On every game day the band marches to the oldest part of the campus and performs the “Salute to The Hill” before heading to the stadium. At the game you’ll get to see them make their famous T formation, it’s enough to make Payton Manning proud…

Michigan Marching Band (University of Michigan)

Michigan has a staggering amount of members, standing at about 400. The Wolverines have a rich history in sports so it would make sense for the band to follow. They have a similar parade tradition to aforementioned Tennessee and wow crowds with their  M Fanfare formation. They also are known to play “The Victors” extra loud when Ohio State comes to town.

Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band (Texas A&M University)

Another behemoth of a marching band sitting at 400 members, The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band is always ready to send College Station into a frenzy. It is comprised entirely of students from the schools military group, The Corps of Cadets, and is the largest Military Band in the world. At halftime, you can catch the well-trained group running a litany of drills to entertain the crowd.

Marching 110 (Ohio University)

Instagram Photo

Even though the name may deceive you, there are actually 240 members. The 110 is a reference to the original number of members in the band. The Marching 110 shows up in a lot of best bands reviews and are the owners of not one, but two different viral videos. One is from 2011 when they did “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO and again in 2012 when they did “Gangam Style” by Psy. This band is able to respect tradition but also go head first into the future thanks to social media.

The Longhorn Band (University of Texas)

University of Texas Longhorn Band is known for precision. They create a precision “UT” and blanket the entire football field when they do the Wall-to-Wall formation. The best part of it all? They are all dressed like Cowboys… 375 cowboys covering the entire field. The band also has one of the world’s biggest bass drums, named “Big Bertha” in their section in the stadium’s north end zone. You know what they say– everything is bigger in Texas.

Purdue All-American Marching Band

Purdue’s All-American Marching Band shares a lot in common with other bands. Precision formations, energy, even a big bass drum like the aforementioned school. What makes them stick out? Their world-class twirlers. The AAMB is lead by four twirlers, The Golden Girl, The Girl in Black, and The Silver Twins. The tradition of the Golden Girl dates back to 1954 and she is ranked one of the nation’s top twirlers. She leads the band along with her fellow twirling ladies.

Million Dollar Band (University of Alabama)

You would think the most dominant football program of the past 10 years would have one of the best bands in the country right? You would be correct. The Million Dollar Band is a 400+ marching juggernaut. When you support Alabama you are going to end up performing at a lot of Bowls. They lead students in the Elephant Stomp and spell BAMA out on the field and have the announcer lead the crowd in a corresponding chant… also the team they play for wins… a lot.

Sophia Phalen Bertolami is the latest Instagram model to be linked to a professional athlete. In recent weeks, it became clear that Bertolami is dating professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau, who most recently won The Northern Trust in Paramus, New Jersey on Aug. 26.

According to our friends over at Busted Coverage, Bertolami previously dated MLB players Mike Napoli and Danny Muno.

Now, she is cozied up with DeChambeau. The couple first went public in June.

But while Bertolami may be a pretty face who has dated plenty of professional athletes, don’t sell her short. The bombshell graduated from Chapman University with a degree in Kinesiology and Nutrition and is currently studing pharmacology at Belmont University.

Eli ‘Trueboy’ Clayton, a 22-year-old from Ballard, West Virginia, has been identified as one of the victims who was murdered by 24-year-old David Katz at a Madden tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday, August 26.

According to reports, Katz, a player at the tournament who lost earlier in the day who went by the names “BREAD” and “RavensChamp,” has been identified as the lone gunman who carried out the mass shooting at Jackson Landing. He used a semi-automatic hand gun in the attack.

27-year-old Taylor Robertson, aka SpotMePlzzz, was identified as the second fatality.

In videos from the scene (which are disturbing), Clayton can be seen with a laser-pointer fixated on his chest moments before the shooting.

Along with the two fatalities, Katz injured 11 others before turning the gun on himself.

via CNN:

David Katz, a 24-year-old gamer from Baltimore, Maryland, was in Jacksonville for the tournament at GLHF Game Bar, in the back of a pizza restaurant. On Sunday, he brought a gun into the venue and opened fire, killing two people. Then he turned the gun on himself, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said. Police have not released a possible motive.

Katz used at least one handgun in the shooting, the sheriff said. Nine other people suffered gunshot wounds and two people were injured fleeing the area, Williams said. The victims were all in stable condition at local hospitals, the sheriff said.

The horror that unfolded was captured on an online stream of the event, posted the website Twitch. The game abruptly stopped after several shots were heard.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., 911 calls started pouring in about a shooting, according to Williams. Officers were on the scene within two minutes.

According to Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams, nine of the non-fatal injuries were gunshot wounds and two were sustained while fleeing the scene.

The tournament, which was held at a bar in the Jacksonville Landing outdoor mall and was hosted by games publisher Electronic Arts, featured about 150 gamers who were competing for a $5,000 prize. The winner was set to go on to a finals tournament in Las Vegas with a $125,000 prize.

On Monday morning, the Memorial Hospital released the names of four of the victims:

– George Amadeo II, 17, is in good condition

– David Echevarria, 28, was treated for minor injuries and released –

– Alexander Madunic, 27, is in good condition after a gunshot wound to the foot

– Christopher McFarland, 31, is in good condition after a bullet graze to the head

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this time.

Washington D.C. Police

Quentin Michals is the second person to be arrested in connection to the shooting death of 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson in Washington, D.C. Wilson was killed by a stray bullet during a quintuple shooting on July 16 and police have been carrying on a thorough investigation.

On Monday morning, D.C. Police arrested the 21-year-old Michals on a first-degree murder charge after he turned himself into authorities at approximately 5:00 a.m.

Wilson’s mother confirmed the news to WJLA-ABC7.

The arrest of Michals comes just two days after the first suspect, 22-year-old Qujuan Thomas, was arrested. Thomas had taken a plea deal for armed robbery charges, according to FOX 5, and was out of jail at the time of Wilson’s death.

Both Michals and Thomas are due in court on Monday, while investigators continue to search for two remaining suspects.

“I’m glad that they are working on it,” Wilson’s mother, Donnetta Wilson, said after the arrest, via the Washington Post. “Now that some progress is being made, it just comforts me a little more.”

Instagram Photo

While police have yet to identify a motive for the shooting, police has said they are looking into surveillance video of a neighborhood dispute. A stolen black Infiniti is seen approaching a courtyard in the neighborhood before four masked gunmen emerge. It’s at that time that the gunmen — one who had an assault-style firearm — begin open-firing “indiscriminately” in multiple directions. Four people, including Makiyah’s sister, were injured.

“Makiyah Wilson should still be with us. She should have gone to school this week. We won’t be satisfied until we find justice in her murder,” Mayor Muriel E. Bowser said during a news conference.

Police hope to continue gathering information while searching for the remaining two suspects.

Starbucks Is Bringing The Pumpkin Spice Latte Back Earlier Than Ever So Get Excited

Starbucks is ready to bring your favorite fall beverage a little early in 2018, with the Pumpkin Spice Latte getting its earliest release date yet. Generally, Starbucks brings back the Pumpkin Spice Latte — a customer favorite for nearly 15 years.

However, this year, the chain will add the drink back to the menu on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

“We know the Pumpkin Spice Latte is a beverage that Starbucks customers wait for with anticipation all year, and we’re excited to give our fans the opportunity to get their fall fix a little earlier,” Starbucks announced in an email to Business Insider.

Business Insider notes that the decision comes as news surfaces that Starbucks is tracking short of quarterly projections.

This week, Piper Jaffray lowered its rating on Starbucks— from buy to neutral — in part because comparable sales are tracking at 2%, which is lower than the consensus of 2.8%. Starbucks’ next quarter represents the 13-week period that started on July 1 and will end in early October. Making sure that PSL season goes on as long as possible and lasts for as much as the fourth quarter as possible is a helpful way to boost these sales.

It also doesn’t hurt that Starbucks sales have been trending towards customers buying cold drinks, so the decision to bring the Pumpkin Spice Latte back in late-August could encourage customers and get them in the routine of getting their fall fix earlier than usual.

So get your yoga pants ready and strap on your Uggs, because its Pumpkin Spice Latte season.

This ‘Infinity War’ Theory About Dr. Strange & The Time Stone Is Quite Legit

Marvel Studios

If you’re like me (which, for your sake, I hope you aren’t), then you’ve seen Avengers: Infinity War about twice in theaters and another 5-8 times since it came out on DVD (Blu-Ray? Streaming? What the hell do we call at-home movie releases these days?).

SPOILER ALERTS BELOW

And if you’re like me, then you’ve spent all of those hours watching Infinity War trying to figure out why the hell Dr. Strange would just give Thanos the Time Stone instead of just, I don’t know… using it?

Since Infinity War’s release, much has been made about Dr. Stephen Strange’s role in the bigger picture, or as he tellingly calls it, the “end game.”

Prior to their battle with Thanos on Titan, Strange uses the Time Stone to “view alternate futures” and “to see all the possible outcomes of the coming conflict.” Ya know, time travel shit.

Anyway, of the 14,000,605 possible outcomes that Strange viewed, the Avengers were only successful in one of them, which begs the question: did those infinitesimal odds play into the way Strange chose to handle said battle (which he was the MVP of, by the way, check the tape)?

“There was no other way,” Doctor Strange explained to his new BFF Tony moments before turning into dust.

And the answer seems to be yes, according to this new (and various older) theories.

via Uproxx:

This has sparked plenty of fan theories already and now a plausible theory that ties together multiple little details in Infinity War you may not have noticed.

When Thanos’ henchman Ebony Maw (the Voldemort-looking wizard) tries to snatch the Eye of Agamotto from Doctor Strange’s neck, it burns his hand:

Marvel Studios

Strange explains that he’s already cursed it. “Its a simple spell but quite unbreakable. […] You’ll find removing a dead man’s spell troublesome.” Since Ebony Maw can’t remove the spell, he begins torturing Strange to remove the curse, but he’s ejected into space before that can happen, which suggests — according to Redditor Mynccx — that there may still be a curse on the Time Stone, and no living henchman left to warn Thanos about it.

If there is a curse in place on the Time Stone, this would explain why Strange’s green spell runes show up when Thanos adds it to the Infinity Gauntlet:

If Strange placed a curse on the stone, that might explain why the Gauntlet was so damaged after “the snap”:

Marvel Studios

Mynccx theorizes that Strange’s curse might have been intended “to destroy the Gauntlet after its ‘snap’ or to interfere with the killing of half the universe, maybe by trapping them in the Soul Stone rather than them dying.”

While what exact role Strange plays in the outcome of Avengers 4 is yet to be seen, his role his clearly a significant one as the man with the ability to look into the future would certainly have a reason behind his rhyme.

All that said, as far as fan theories go, I find this Captain Marvel-related one to be more plausible:

Doctor Strange knows what happens in the future, he sets it up in fact. He knew that Thanos had to snap his fingers at that exact right time and under all these certain conditions for them to win. He’s setting up Captain Marvel’s return to Earth. I believe he’ll appear in the CM movie and tell Fury it is vital for him to carry around with him the pager to contact Captain Marvel.

Nick Fury, knowing about Steven Strange, lists him as an ally to SHIELD which, of course, is how Hydra knows about him despite him being a neurosurgeon (anyone who is an ally of SHIELD is a threat to HYDRA).

He (Strange) warns him of an event in the future [referring] to the people turning to dust without warning, this is why Fury’s instant reaction to seeing Maria Hill turn to ash was to run to the pager, but what our good friend Sorcerer Supreme didn’t mention was the fact that he does not survive hence the “Mother Fu…” at the very end. We should also take note that the way he says it isn’t [panicked] or scared, he’s confident that Strange knows what he’s doing.

The currently untitled fourth Avengers film (some suggest it may be called Avengers: End Game) is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.

We’ve Got A Red Lobster (AKA Seafood McDonald’s) Fight!

There’s something about viral fights in fast food joints that is just intrinsically American. Baseball, apple pie, war, comic books, Tom Hanks movies, and fights in McDonald’s foyers: that’s what it means to be an American.

So, it’s only natural that the next stage of our evolution (devolution) would be taking our dining room brawls from land to sea, or more aptly, from McDonald’s to Red Lobster.

While there is no context behind the fight — the location and participants have yet to be identified — the video remains enjoyable all the same.

via MEAWW:

A video capturing a violent brawl inside the Red Lobster outlet has emerged which shows the moment a woman smashes a glass against a restaurant server’s head after claiming that the latter disrespected her disabled son.

On Saturday, the footage was captured and uploaded online. The video, which has 70,000 views at the last count, has since gone viral. In the video, a female waitress is seen confronting a black mum, who can be heard saying, “You want to throw s*** at me you b****?”

The mother is then seen trying to protect herself from the enraged waitress, who is yelling “Come on, come on.”

Moments later, to everyone’s shock, the woman is seen smashing a glass cup against the server’s head as soon as she grabs hold of her arms.

While Red Lobster has yet to make a public statement about the incident, we definitely know McDonald’s PR team is hyped about this one.

And if fast food restaurant fights are your thing (which they should be), make sure to check out the one for earlier this summer, which I appropriately titled ‘This Is McMerica’:

LIU Allegedly Stole Students From Mercy College

Long Island University in Brooklyn is being sued by Manhattan’s Mercy College in New York State court in a bizarre lawsuit that brings admissions ethics to light. According to the lawsuit, Long Island University was stealing students from Mercy with the help of the school’s dean.

There has yet to be a public response from Long Island University, and it doesn’t seem like there will be one with the school saying “while this case lacks merit, we will address the facts through the courts, not in the media.”

Here are some details on the lawsuit from Inside Higher Ed:

The lawsuit alleges that a former dean of the business school at Mercy, subsequently hired by Long Island University, used his access to confidential information about Mercy’s admitted applicants to lure some of them to LIU. The suit — highly unusual in that it involves one college suing another — seeks damages from LIU and an order that it stop using any information obtained by the former Mercy dean. The suit says damages should be at least $700,000 but that the extent of harm hasn’t yet been determined.

Mercy goes on to allege that the data that was taken included spreadsheets which included data from the school’s two primary strategies for recruiting students. The data included financial offers, the students’ status, and other valuable information.

According to the lawsuit, the loss of one student costs Mercy $32,252.

The dean in question is Edward Weis, who was employed at Mercy’s business school until May 31. In June, he began his new gig as the LIU vice president of academic affairs.

If the allegations prove to be true, Weis will be guilty of violating the Code of Ethics and Professional Practices of the National Association for College Admission Counseling. This is going to be a very intriguing legal battle.

Beyonce, Jay-Z Concert Forces Replacement Of South Carolina Football Field

The South Carolina football field needs replaced thanks to Beyonce and Jay-Z. On Tuesday, Aug. 21, the music industry’s royal couple held their concert at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia and there was enough damage that the entire field needed a re-do after it was all said and done.

Last week, the grounds crew brought in new sod to start the replacement process with the South Carolina staff set to begin installing more than 90,000 square feet of Bermuda grass on Monday.

Despite having less than a week until the Gamecocks’ season opener against Coastal Carolina on Saturday, the school is confident that the job will be done.

“We would not have done this if we believed there was a safety issue,” assistant athletic director Clark Cox said, via ESPN.com. “My job and our entire ground staff’s job, our No. 1 priority in everything we do, is safety and welfare of our student-athletes.”

The university had attempted to preserve the field by placing a hard surface over the turf, but the damage was still done.

The cost of replacement is between $150,000 to $200,000, but was covered by the concert promoters.

Kickoff between the Gamecocks and Chanticleers at Williams-Brice Stadium is set for 12:00 p.m. ET on the SEC Network. South Carolina will remain at home for the following two weeks when they play host to the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs in a big early-season clash on Sept. 8 and Marshall on Sept. 15.
