Should DJ Durkin Be Fired? Jordan McNair’s Parents Weigh-In

Maryland football coach DJ Durkin has been placed on administrative leave as the university investigates the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who died following a summer workout. The school has accepted full responsibility for McNair’s death, but the future of the team’s head coach remains in question.

There have been varying opinions on whether Durkin should be fired from the Terrapins, but now one of the most important voices on the matter is speaking out.

On Thursday, Aug. 16, the parents of McNair appeared on Good Morning America and spoke with host Michael Strahan to discuss the entire matter. As far as the parents are concerned, the way that the Maryland staff handled their son’s situation should lead to the head coach’s firing.

“He shouldn’t be able to work with anyone else’s kid. You send your kid away to college for them to be developed into young people — and that’s physically, emotionally and spiritually, and teach our young kids, our young people that we worked so hard to get there, to, ‘Hey, I’m giving my child to you. Keep him safe.’ They did anything but that. So of course he should be fired,” Martin McNair said.

— Good Morning America (@GMA) August 16, 2018

Maryland has already fired strength coach Rick Court following McNair’s death. There is no timetable for a decision on Durkin’s future with the program.

The Terrapins kickoff their 2018 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Texas. Kickoff at FedExField between Maryland and the Longhorns is set for 12:00 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

NYU Offers Full Scholarships For All Medical Students

New York University made a big announcement on Thursday, Aug. 16. NYU announced that all current and future medical students at the university will be awarded scholarships and receive free tuition in an effort to combat the rising costs of medical education.

The cost of the yearly tuition that the scholarships will cover is $55,018.

“Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our trustees, alumni, and friends, our hope—and expectation—is that by making medical school accessible to a broader range of applicants, we will be a catalyst for transforming medical education nationwide,” says Kenneth G. Langone, chair of the Board of Trustees of NYU Langone Health, in a statement from the university.

The ground-breaking decision makes NYU the first top 10 medical school to offer free tuition.

The announcement was made at the end of the school’s annual White Coat Ceremony where new students are presented with their lab coats to officially mark the beginning of their education and training in the medical field.

“This decision recognizes a moral imperative that must be addressed, as institutions place an increasing debt burden on young people who aspire to become physicians,” says Robert I. Grossman, MD, the Saul J. Farber Dean of NYU School of Medicine and CEO of NYU Langone Health.

The scholarships will be awarded regardless of need or merit.

“We believe that with our tuition-free initiative, we have taken a necessary, rational step that addresses a critical need to train the most talented physicians, unencumbered by crushing debt,” says Dr. Grossman. “We hope that many other academic medical centers will soon choose to join us on this path.”

Kudos to you, NYU.

Roller coasters are one of the great adventures a person can experience on any given day. Theme parks invest millions and millions of dollars into these rides because they know it is the surest way to ensure people consistently want to come to your park. People will travel across the country to experience the best roller coasters. Roller coasters are truly the perfect combination of excitement, fear, and adrenaline. With National Roller Coaster Day occurring on August 16, 2018, now seems like a perfect time to rank the ten greatest roller coasters in the United States.

1. El Toro – Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, New Jersey

Getty Images

El Toro is a wooden roller coaster inside the Six Flags Great Adventure amusement park. When it opened in 2006, El Toro featured the steepest drop of any wooden coaster in the world. The track is 4,400 feet long and stands 181 feet high, reaching a top speed of 70 miles per hour. Among wooden roller coasters in the world, it still ranks second it highest drop height and fourth in both speed and height.

2. Twisted Colossus – Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia, California

Shutterstock

Twisted Colossus is a steel roller coaster inside the Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park. The original ride opened as just The Colossus in 1978 as a wooden coaster. However, Six Flags decided to close the legendary ride in 2014 and reimagine the ride as a steel coaster. This ride features a “racing track” meaning two different cars ride the track at the same time. Halfway through one car’s ride, another comes on from the opposite side as the race towards the other end, passing each other in the middle. The track is 4,990 feet long and 121 feet high, reaching speeds as high as 57 miles per hour.

3. The Voyage – Holiday World, Santa Claus, Indiana

The Voyage is a wooden roller coaster in the Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari amusement park. The track is 6,442 feet long and 163 feet high. It reaches a top speed of 67 miles per hour and features a 154-foot drop. Amusement Today called the ride the “Best New Ride” in 2006 and the “Best Wooden Rollercoaster” every year from 2007-2011.

4. Iron Rattler – Six Flags Fiesta Texas, San Antonio, Texas

Instagram Photo

The Iron Rattler is a wood-steel hybrid coaster. The coaster first opened as The Rattler in 1992 as a wooden coaster but in 2012 it was announced that Six Flags would be redoing the coaster by installing a brand new steel track on top of the original coaster’s wooden frame. By doing this, the coaster increased its speeds and its drops became higher and steeper. The track is 3,266 feet long, standing 170 feet high and with a max speed of 70 miles per hour.

5. Superman the Ride – Six Flags New England, Agawam, Massachusetts

Getty Images

Superman the Ride is a steel coaster inside of the Six Flags New England amusement park. The ride first opened in 2000 under the name Superman: Ride of Steel. It was also known as the Bizarro coaster for a few years. The name isn’t the only thing about the coaster that has changed, either. Six Flags experimented with implementing a virtual reality system into the coaster in 2016, giving riders the option of wearing a VR helmet during the ride. That plan was ended prior to 2017. Additionally, the coaster has gone through several major safety changes after two accidents, one even leading to a man’s death, in 2001 and 2004. The track is 5,400 feet long and stands 208 feet high, reaching a top speed of 77 miles per hour.

6. Diamondback – Kings Island, Mason, Ohio

Instagram Photo

Diamondback is a steel coaster in the Kings Island amusement park that first opened in 2009. The ride is a hypercoaster, meaning it is a steel coaster that stands at least 200 feet tall and has no inversions. The track is 5,282 feet long and stands 230 feet tall. The ride reaches a top speed of 80 miles per hour during the run.

7. Maverick – Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio

Instagram Photo

Maverick is a steel coaster inside the Cedar Point amusement park. The coaster first opened in 2007, after a delay due to the fact the ride was found to be too intense after completion and changes were forced to be made. The track is 4,450 feet long and stands 105 feet high. The ride features two inversions, a 100-foot drop and reaches speeds as high as 70 miles per hour.

8. Mako – SeaWorld Orlando, Orlando, Florida

Mako is a steel coaster inside of the SeaWorld Orlando park. Mako opened in 2016 and was built around the park’s existing shark attractions. Mako’s track is 4,760 feet long and stands 200 feet high. This coaster features no inversions but does have a 200-foot drop and reaches speeds as high as 73 miles per hour. Mako is the only new coaster built by SeaWorld Orlando since 2009.

9. Millenium Force – Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio

Instagram Photo

Millenium Force is a steel roller coaster inside of the Cedar Point amusement park, the second coaster from the park on this list. This coaster first opened in May of 2000 and was both the tallest and fastest coaster in the world for three months until a new coaster opened in Japan that broke both records. The track is 6,595 feet long and 310 feet high, featuring a 300-foot drop. The coaster reaches speeds as high as 93 miles per hour. Since it opened in 2000, Millenium Force has been voted the best steel coaster in the country ten times by Amusement Today magazine.

10. Outlaw Run – Silver Dollar City, Branson, Missouri

Instagram Photo

Outlaw Run is a wooden roller coaster inside the Silver Dollar City amusement park that first opened in 2013. The coaster is the first wooden coaster in the world to feature multiple inversions. The track is 2,937 feet long and 162 feet high, reaching speeds as high as 68 miles per hour during its run.

High School Student Hacks Apple Servers, Downloads 90 GB Of Data

What were you doing when you were a high school student? Well, one teenager in Australia has accomplished more than you were likely capable of doing at the time… even if it was illegal. According to a report from The Age, a 16-year-old high school student in Australia managed to hack into the Apple servers and then proceeded to download 90GB of “secure files.” The boy was also able to access multiple customer accounts.

Despite the teen’s best efforts, the Australian Federal Police executed a search warrant on his home after tracking IP addresses to multiple devices in his possession.

“Two Apple laptops were seized and the serial numbers matched the serial numbers of the devices which accessed the internal systems,” a prosecutor said. “A mobile phone and hard drive were also seized and the IP address … matched the intrusions into the organization. The purpose was to connect remotely to the company’s internal systems.”

From MacRumors:

Details of the case are still sketchy, but the boy’s hacking is said to have begun at the age of 16, and included downloading tens of gigabytes of secure files and accessing “authorized keys” that grant login access to users.

The boy is said to have attempted to hide his identity using a number of methods including “computerized tunnels”, a system which had “worked flawlessly” until the teen was caught.

The teen, who allegedly carried out the attacks because he was “such a fan of the company” and hoped to work there, has pleaded guilty and will be sentenced next month.

It’s highly unlikely that his dream job will ever come to fruition, too.

Ball State University Votes To Remove John Schnatter’s Name From Building

Ball State University Board of Trustees have approved a motion that will remove the name of Papa John’s founder John Schnatter from a building on campus. Schnatter, a Ball State alum, resigned from his role as company chairman after it was reported that he used a racial slur during a conference call earlier this year. The University of Louisville has already removed his name from the football stadium and a business school, and now Ball State is following suit.

His name will now be removed from the John H. Schnatter Institute for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise.

“While we sincerely acknowledge Mr. Schnatter’s generosity in providing the 2016 grant funding, it is proposed that the name John H. Schnatter be removed from the John H. Schnatter Institute for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise as well as the related Distinguished Professorship appointment; and the Institute be referred to as the Ball State University Institute for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise,” the resolution from the university read. “Accordingly, the funding from the original grant will be returned to Mr. Schnatter’s Family Foundation.”

Along with removing his name, Ball State has decided to return $3.25 million funding in a grant from Schnatter and the Charles Koch Foundation.

Instagram Photo

Ball State issued a lengthy statement on their decision, via FOX 59.

“The Board of Trustees strongly condemns racism, both implicit and explicit. Our condemnation extends to include John Schnatter’s comments that are the subject of controversy and have no place in our society,” the statement read. “The Board had hoped that the situation would provide a learning opportunity regarding race relations and critical thinking. We respect and appreciate that John desired to engage with our students and campus community and otherwise continue to be supportive of Ball State. From the Board’s perspective, our University was presented with a chance to have a healthy and open conversation that could lead to better understanding of issues facing our society.”

The university continued saying that their decision was to show a full commitment to showing racism and combating the issues facing our society.

“Notwithstanding the Board’s strong belief in the power of conversation, President Mearns has advised us that such discussions with John and other good faith gestures would not be well received or effective, as long as his name remains on the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise. Unfortunately, the response from some on campus and the current political climate in our nation makes the meaningful progress we desire very challenging,” the university continued. “At the same time, the Board does not wish to risk that others will have a false impression that Ball State is not fully committed to a welcoming and inclusive campus for all.

“Accordingly, the Board voted today to remove John Schnatter’s name from the Institute. While the office suite signage in one of our buildings has changed, the troubling issues facing our nation still exist. The Board encourages the Ball State community to engage in constructive dialogue as we collectively work towards solutions.”

Doja Cat: Hottest Photos Of The ‘Mooo!’ Rapper

Doja Cat, born Amala Zandile Dlamini, is no stranger to the music industry. She signed with RCA Records in March 2014, one year after releasing her first single, but it wasn’t until this month that the singer, songwriter and rapper started making headlines.

The reason for the recent rise in popularity is thanks to Doja Cat’s viral hit “Mooo!”

In the video for the song, which has been a hit on YouTube, Doja Cat dances in front of a green screen in a number of ridiculous outfits. The quirkiness of the video was just too much for people to look away from.

She explained what went into making the hit in a recent interview.

“It was surprisingly so hard. On Google, you think you can find anything. You can find a cat as a taco. I’m like, “Oh, yeah. This is going to be easy.” I get on Google like, give me a cute cheeseburger gif. F*cking nothing came up. I couldn’t find anything. Couldn’t find any cows that were cute and pink. So I’m like, f*ck it, let’s go the classic route. Let’s get some 8-bit cheeseburgers. Trying to get the gifs from Google to Photo Booth was the only annoying part—other than the lighting. I only have Christmas lights as lighting in my room. I just hammered some bedding to the wall and I used my laptop for Photo Booth,” she said, via Vice.

Lil Pump dropped his newest mixtape Harverd Dropout on Friday, August 17th, 2018. The Miami native announced on his Twitter and Instagram a few weeks back that he would be releasing his new mixtape on his birthday. Pump announced back in January that he was working on new music for his fans. In April he tweeted saying that the mixtape had been completed but he was waiting to release it.

This will be Pump’s first major work being released since he released his debut album, Lil Pump, back in 2017. Many big names were featured on that album like Gucci Mane, Rick Ross, Chief Keef, Smokepurpp, and 2 Chainz. His lead-single “Gucci Gang” gave Pump his first Billboard Hot 100 entry, which “Gucci Gang” reached as high as number three on the charts. Pump has since been working on his latest work and has released a few songs ahead of the release date for his newest mixtape. Pump has already released “Drug Addicts”, “Esskeetit”, and “Designer”. “Esskeetit” peaked as high as number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. “Drug Addicts” has been the most popular so far as the music video has a guest appearance from Charlie Sheen.

Pump’s newest mixtape title Harverd Dropout comes from a famous tweet released by Lil Pump on his twitter account where he had claimed to have dropped out of Harvard University in order to save the rap game. Only being 17 years old at the time of the tweet obviously Pump isn’t old enough to attend college and was joking with his fans.

Florida State Seminoles Football 2018-19: Predictions & Preview

Florida State will finally see a change of the guard after last year’s disappointing season Jimbo Fisher is out. Unfortunate for him that injuries cost him his job, but he will do just fine at Texas A&M. For Willie Taggart, the new leader of the Seminoles, he takes over a very deep talented roster that is a poised for a comeback season this year. If Deandre Francois can play like his freshmen self, these guys will be fighting for a ticket to a BCS game. Playing in the soft ACC will also help and the road to a nine or 10 win season is not out of the question at all.

2018-2019 Summary

Instagram Photo

With Jimbo Fisher’s tenure coming to an end, Willie Taggart will be taking over a talented bunch. The 7-6 record from a season ago could be attributed to many different things, but injuries would be the center point of them. With Deandre Francois looking to return healthy and re-claim his starting spot at quarterback, FSU will have a shot at flirting with a 10 win season. The Virginia Tech opener will be a fun one, and the winner of that game will probably reach 10 wins. The week five to week nine stretch will determine the Seminoles fate with games against Louisville, Miami, Wake Forest, and Clemson. If they get three of the four there, that would be the alternative path to 10 wins assuming they drop the VA Tech game. The weak ACC should allow Willie Taggart to easily reach nine wins, however, and FSU will be right back in the rankings where they belong.

Record: Wins 9, Losses 3

Week 1: Florida State 20, Virginia Tech 31 (L)
Week 2: Florida State 41, Samford 10 (W)
Week 3: Florida State 38, Syracuse 16 (W)
Week 4: Florida State 49, Northern Illinois 21 (W)
Week 5: Florida State 28, Louisville 17 (W)
Week 6: Florida State 20, Miami Fl 27 (L)
Week 7: Bye
Week 8: Florida State 31, Wake Forest 21 (W)
Week 9: Florida State 24, Clemson 41 (L)
Week 10: Florida State 28, NC State 27 (W)
Week 11: Florida State 20, Notre Dame 17 (W)
Week 12: Florida State 38, Boston College 28 (W)
Week 13: Florida State 21, Florida 13 (W)

The College of St. Joseph in Vermont has been placed on probation. According to reports, the New England Association of Schools decided to place the Vermont school on probation because its financial resources are not meeting standards. The College of St. Joseph learned of its probation on July 31, with enrollment and revenue issues becoming more prominent.

College president Jennifer Scott says the school is starting a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $3.5 million in the next two years.

“I don’t think this came as a surprise to anyone, given how open we’ve been about the financial struggles that the school has had, given the conversations that were going on in the spring . and given the transition in leadership happening just 10 days before that hearing,” Scott said, via US News. “I don’t think anybody expected there would be any other decision.”

Earlier this year, a vote was held on whether to close the school, but trustees eventually decided to keep it open despite the issues.

“These are not easy decisions for the commission to make,” said Barbara Brittingham, president of the commission. “We are hoping that the College of St. Joseph can do well and get off probation.”

Iredell County Detention Center

Christina Davis Jolly, a North Carolina middle school teacher, has been arrested on statutory rape charges in a disturbing story. According to law enforcement officials, the 43-year-old has been accused of sexually abusing her 15-year-old foster child.

From the Statesville Record & Landmark:

Jolly, 43, agreed to relinquish custody of the boy in July and was ordered not to have contact with him. The sheriff’s office says Jolly continued to communicate with the boy over social media, so deputies searched her home and seized her computers.

Davis was charged late Wednesday with five felony counts of statutory rape of a child 15 or younger and two felony counts of statutory sex offense of a child 15 or younger. She has a $200,000 secured bond on the statutory rape charges and a $75,000 unsecured bond on the sex offense charges.

The acts occurred between last August and July.

Jolly has been suspended by Iredell-Statesville Schools without pay while the case is being investigated. She has worked in the school system since 2002 and taught at Troutman Elementary School and Troutman Middle School.

Jolly’s bond was set at $275,000.

Jolly is just the latest teacher to be charged for an inappropriate relationship with a teenager. Over the course of just a few months, educators across the country were arrested for entering into an inappropriate relationship with their students, Tennessee teacher Janet Smothers, LaToya Parker, Florida teacher Caroline Lawson, 26-year-old Allyson Moran and Katherine Ross Ridenhour were all arrested on similar charges. A woman named Kayla Sprinkles was arrested in North Carolina for similar sexual crimes.

The list goes on to include 22-year-old Oklahoma science teacher Hunter Day, 28-year-old teacher Megan Kotarski, 23-year-old history teacher Michelle Schiffer, 29-year-old Alyssia Marie Reddy, special education teacher Jordan Ondish and 28-year-old Samantha Fitzpatrick have all been allegedly carrying on inappropriate relationships with their students.

In addition, 31-year-old Nicole Marie Andrews, 32-year-old Jessica Langford, 29-year-old Andrea Baber, 27-year-old Robin Dunlap, 27-year-old Jennifer Olajire-Aro have also been charged with these charges.

34-year-old Miranda Nicole Pauley was charged with similar crimes, Nancy Leigh Ann Brann, a former Christian school teacher, was arrested for having sex with a student, Coine Audiat pleaded no contest to having sex with a minor in 2016 and 23-year-old Darci Lake was arrested for an inappropriate relationship. 27-year-old Brittany Zamora from Arizona was arrested on similar charges. Keri Hoffman, 35, was also arrested for an alleged relationship with a student. More recently, 29-year-old Tiffany Ranweiler-Oblander and 33-year-old Maren Oates were arrested on similar charges.

Purdue University Has Set Up “Temporary Dorms”& People Are Horrified By Them

This week, photos first published by Purdue University’s student-run newspaper, the Purdue Exponent, showed the temporary dorms that the school has been forced to set up due to an excessive amount of admitted students. They have raised concerns over whether or not the school should be admitting this many students in the first place.

Instagram Photo

The photos generated a massive number of reactions on social media, with the dorms being compared to a prison and boot camps. According to Beth McCuskey, the vice provost of student affairs at Purdue, the university had admitted five times more students than anticipated, forcing the temporary housing to be set up.

Buzzfeed News spoke to McCuskey and she was quoted as saying “Every year we arrange for temporary spaces and typically have 100 spaces that are used.” She also said that some people will say they plan on attending Purdue and then simply do not show up.

Despite McCuskey attempting to explain the situation, once the pictures were posted online, social media blew up with people expressing shock, anger, disappointment, and others simply laughing.

Now, imagine dropping your child off and you enter a room called “Auxiliary Housing” and THEY DONT HAVE THEIR OWN FREAKING DORM ROOM W ONEEEEE ROOMMATE. But it’s a freaking SHARED OPEN SPACE.

Purdue tripping tripping. This a hell naw. This look like jail fam. A halfway house. pic.twitter.com/ypSNWrqOF3

Money hungry university valuing tuition money over the quality of where their students sleep at night. @LifeAtPurdue y’all pathetic https://t.co/fKSL3Sx3vB

If @Purdue can't provide safe housing for their students, they have no business admitting that many students. https://t.co/pYj4TecjhR

Purdue housing is $10k and they’re living in open spaces? And you expect me to believe HBCU’s only having housing issues? pic.twitter.com/ZZ2lFmP815

— kourtney j. (@THEROYALKOURT) August 16, 2018

The first picture looks like any normal freshman dorm room, albeit smaller and more confined than one would probably like.

However, once you get to the second picture, that’s when things take a…turn. It actually resembles something of a prison open layout and even though they attempt to separate each sleeping area with desks, you’re still in a giant room with about 100 other people.

In a set up like this, there is about zero room for privacy.

Wanna study? Too bad because Joe is 30 feet away blasting the new Young Thug album at full volume.

Wanna hook up? Too bad because there are five people snoring 15 feet away from you.

The school said that students are free to move off campus at any time but at the same time the director of university residences is attempting to justify it by saying “There are great advantages to living on campus. In term of better grade point average, better opportunities for leadership, more engagement in on-campus activities.”

Absolute WILD statement to make when you’re attempting to convince people that spending your freshman year in an Army barracks. Housing costs $10,000 at Purdue and needless to say I’d be demanding that money back in a flash.

University Of Tennessee To Consider Allowing Alcohol At Campus Events

The University of Tennessee has recommended some major changes to the campus’ alcohol policy. If the measure is passed, the university — which has been a dry campus for years — would be able to sell beer and wine at certain on-campus events.

The Alcohol Policy Task Force, which includes students, faculty, academic deans, staff, alumni, and community members, recommended the changes after a review began in 2017.

“At the conclusion of the review and deliberation of these materials, the members of the Task Force unanimously agreed that it would be in the best interest of the University to revise the current alcohol policy to allow the lawful possession, consumption, and … distribution of alcohol on campus at specially permitted, registered events,” the report read.

As you would expect, the measures and recommendations are strongly supported by students.

From the report:

Part of the task force’s collection efforts included a public survey in February about the issue. Within an hour of putting it online, about 2,000 people responded, according to Carilli. In the weeks following, the number doubled.

University of Tennessee spokeswoman Megan Boehnke said 3,000 of the 4,053 responses to the survey were from University students.

“Students are happy about this (proposed) change,” Kabir said. “They’re looking forward to something happening.”

University of Tennessee Alcohol Recommendations

  • Recommendation No. 1: The University of Tennessee Knoxville adopt a policy in which the distribution, possession and consumption of alcohol by individuals aged 21 or over is allowed at preapproved, registered on-campus events, within the parameters of all state, federal and local laws;
  • Recommendation No. 2: Under this policy, all individuals aged 21 and over, including university students, should be permitted to consume alcohol at approved events;
  • Recommendation No. 3: Beer and wine are the only types of alcohol that should be allowed to be served at university-sanctioned events. Common source alcohol and liquor should be strictly prohibited.
