Jordan Holgerson was seriously injured after being pushed off of the Moulton Falls Bridge in Washington. Holgerson was standing on the edge of the bridge preparing to jump, but she showed some hesitation. After the brief moment of pause from the 16-year-old, video shows another person lean over and shove her off of the bridge into the Lewis River.

Holgerson, who is a student at Kalama High School, suffered five cracked ribs, a bruised esophagus, injured her trachea and had air trapped in the lining of her lungs.

“She is lucky she is not paralyzed or dead. We’re lucky she is going to recover and not have permanent injuries,” said her mother Genelle Holgerson, who is a medical assistant at St. John Medical Center, via TDN.com. The woman who shoved Holgerson is an adult. “I’m very upset with her. She is an adult, and I’m sure she should have known better. She could have killed my daughter,” Genelle added.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

“I could’ve died. In midair I think I might’ve blacked out. I was awake and aware when I hit the water. I have five broken ribs, air bubbles in my chest, and I have a punctured lung,” Holgerson said when speaking to KGW. “It could’ve ended a lot worse.”

Holgerson also noted that someone swam out to save her or she fears she would have drowned.

Holgerson has a long road to recovery ahead of her, but she is hoping to return to school where she is on the Honor Roll sooner rather than later. Her mother said she is unsure of just how long the 16-year-old will remain in the hospital as she recovers from the serious injuries. In the meantime, Genelle just hopes the woman who pushed her daughter off of the bridge will turn herself in.

“My daughter’s gonna have a long recovery and I think she should just turn herself in – realize what she did wrong,” she said, via KATU. “This is not okay. She could have killed my daughter.

The 2018 NFL Preseason kicks into full swing on Thursday, Aug. 9 with 12 games officially getting Week 1 underway. After the Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears kicked things off at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game last week, and both teams will be back in action for the second time while the rest of the league prepares to kickoff their preseason schedules.

Baltimore returns to the field at home against the Los Angeles Rams, while the Bears travel to Cincinnati to face off against the Bengals.

Laura Ingraham has been involved in politics for years. Currently serving as the host of The Ingraham Angle on FOX News, Ingraham first got involved in politics in the late 1980’s when she worked as a speechwriter in the Reagan administration for the Domestic Policy Advisor. Ingraham attended law school and served as the law clerk for Judge Ralph K. Winter Jr. of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, New York and also clerked for US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Since then, Ingraham has moved over to television where she has hosted her own show since October 2017.

On the Ingraham angle, Laura has found her fair share of controversy. She was the subject of a call for an advertiser boycott after she attacked Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg. She also came under fire after comments directed at NBA star LeBron James who she told to “shut up and dribble.” Most recently, Ingraham has generated controversy for her comments on immigration.

“Massive demographic changes have been foisted on the American people. They’re changes none of us ever voted for, and most of us don’t like,” she said, citing “both illegal and, in some cases, legal immigration.”

Those comments have led to another call for advertisers to boycott her show.

Sharice Davids is looking to make history. Davids, a former professional mixed martial artist, became the Democratic nominee in the Third Congressional District in Kansas on Wednesday, Aug. 8 after she made the decision to turn her attention to politics. Davids retired from MMA after failing to make The Ultimate Fighter 20: A Champion Will Be Crowned cast which crowned the UFC’s first-ever strawweight champion.

Now, the 37-year-old Democrat is aiming to make a difference in her community by reaching Congress and breaking down barriers as the first Indigenous woman in Congress.

Davids is a member of the Ho-Chunk nation.

“It’s 2018, and women, Native Americans, gay people, the unemployed, and underemployed have to fight like hell just to survive,” Davids said, via Elite Daily. “And it’s clear: Trump and the Republicans in Washington don’t give a damn about anyone like me or anyone that doesn’t think like them. That’s why I’m running for Congress.

“When people see a black woman or a native woman or a Latina or an LGBT person, it should be part of the norm that they look and see a leader.”

Davids will face incumbent Representative Kevin Yoder after winning the Democratic primary. Among those she defeated to earn the democratic nod was Brent Welder, who had support from many of the star politicians on the left like Senator Bernie Sanders and Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

She also used her past as a professional MMA fighter in her very first campaign ad.

Kelsey Martinez is breaking down barriers in the Oakland Raiders organization. This week, Jon Gruden announced that Martinez has been added to his staff which makes her the first female assistant coach in Raiders history. Martinez serves as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, making her the only current female S&C coach in the NFL. The first female strength and conditioning coach in NFL history was Lee Brandon, who was on the New York Jets coaching staff in 1990.

Martinez joins San Francisco 49ers offensive assistant Katie Sowers and Buffalo Bills special teams quality control coach Kathryn Smith as female assistants in the league.

The 26-year-old Martinez graduated from Colorado State.

“Don’t create limits on yourself,” Martinez said, via the Las Vegas Review Journal. “There’s many excuses or whatever that can be made, but at the end of the day, what do you love to do? I was able to find what I love to do, and that’s working for Jon Gruden every day. ‘Do you love football?’ That’s his number one question. Do you love football? Do you love what you do? Why limit yourself or who you are if that’s what you want?

“I didn’t let that try to ever stop me. More than anything, I’m thinking of how young I am coming in here versus me being a girl. You can’t limit yourself.”

The Alabama football program is set to be featured on an all-access ESPN series titled “Training Days: Rolling with the Tide.” The new series will premiere on Thursday, Aug. 9 on ESPN2. The show — which gives a feel similar to the HBO hit series “Hard Knocks” — will follow the defending College Football Playoff National Champions as they prepare for the upcoming season.

“Alabama football is one of the premier programs in all of sports,” said ESPN vice president of production Lee Fitting in a statement.

“The intrigue behind their championship-filled decade and the fans’ appetite for unique access continues to escalate. This series will provide a unique perspective of the Crimson Tide as they build upon a foundation for what they hope is another championship campaign.  We appreciate Coach Nick Saban and the entire Alabama operation for allowing us inside their walls over the next month.”

This month, Nicki Minaj is set to return with her latest studio album titled Queen. The album was initially scheduled to drop on June 15, but was later pushed back to Aug. 10. The album was pushed back yet again to Aug. 17 after Minaj had to clear a song which sampled legendary singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman. It marks Minaj’s first studio album since the 2014 hit Pinkprint.

Queen will be Minaj’s fourth studio album, featuring 19 songs.

The lead single for the album is “Chun-Li,” which was released on May 4. She released a follow-up single “Bed” which features Ariana Grande, who also dropped a studio album on Aug. 17, the following month. Prior to the release of “Bed,” Minaj dropped a promotional single with Lil Wayne titled “Rich Sex” that will also be featured on the album.

Following the album’s release, Minaj will continue promoting Queen by co-headlining the international NickiHndrxx Tour alongside rap star Future. The tour will officially kickoff in late September.

Gucci Mane is staying busy ahead of the release of his upcoming album Evil Genius. On Thursday, Aug. 9, the Atlanta-based rapper dropped his second single from the project titled “Kept Back,” which features rising rap star Lil Pump. The track is just one of many collaborations that Gucci Mane has teased for Evil Genius which could include tracks with Quavo, Offset, and 21 Savage.

“I really just been compiling a bunch of songs, listening to beats,” Gucci said on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show. “I went in with Metro, I did a bunch of songs with Southside, C.N.O.T.E. I just really wanted to just have a chance to almost make a mixtape worth of songs with all the producers that I like.” Gucci has about 60-70 songs to whittle down to a more presentable package.

As college campuses across the country look to find new degrees and certificate programs to accommodate a wider range of prospective students, Ivy Tech Community College’s Fort Wayne campus has decided to add six new programs to their curriculum. The new degrees and programs focus mainly on design, engineering, and technology.

It is a positive step forward for community colleges as they look to provide a more affordable option for students while also offering programs that will set them up for success in the real world well after their schooling is over.

The new majors are Urban Horticulture, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Engineering, Mechanical Design, Computer Aided Design, and Architectural Design.

* Mechanical Engineering Technology: Students earn an associate’s degree in science as part of a Transfer as a Junior program that allows them to transfer after two years to Purdue University Fort Wayne to pursue a bachelor’s degree in that field, the news release said. New courses offered include fluid power, system automation and control, and a capstone course. The degree will prepare students for jobs in manufacturing, quality control, design, materials testing, process and product design, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD).

* Engineering: A new technical certificate and a freshmen engineering certificate will allow students to gain credentials as they study for the associate’s degree in engineering.

* Mechanical Design, Computer Aided Design, and Architectural Design: Because of high demand for workers, many Design Technology students get hired for jobs before completing their associate’s degree, the news release said. The new certificates allow students to show a knowledge base on their resumes and encourage companies to invest in helping their new employees to complete degrees, the news release said.

Colleges across the country are tightening restrictions for medical services provided on campus and are working to educate students of their rights on campus with the hope of avoiding sexual assault scandals like those that have plagued Michigan State University, the University of Southern California, and Ohio State University in recent years. In a report from The Chronicle of Higher Education, one of the measures being taken by some universities is ensuring there is an observer present when a medical procedure is being performed.

The tighter restrictions are necessary, with students visiting the campus medical center on average once per year.

Data also shows that a third of rape victims are attacked before they are 17, and that one quarter of girls are sexually abused by 18, and athletic programs have often been the focus of accusations of sexual misconduct.

More serious crimes on campus are documented by the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN),  which reports that women are more than two times more likely to be sexually assaulted than robbed in college and about one quarter of undergraduate females experience sexual violence.

One of the most notable scandals surrounded disgraced former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State doctor Larry Nassar. While Nassar was on trial, more than 150 women and girls said that they were sexually abused by the doctor over the course of his career. Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison earlier this year.

Richard Strauss, who was once a well-regarded physician at Ohio State University, was accused of decades-long sexual misconduct. Strauss, who committed suicide in 2015, has been accused by more than 100 former students, including members of the wrestling team and athletes from 14 other sports, of sexual misconduct. Strauss allegedly used medical examinations as a guise for assaulting male student-athletes.

Jamill Jones, an assistant coach for the Wake Forest basketball team, has been charged with assault following a deadly attack on a Florida tourist who was visiting New York City. Baton Rouge native Sabor Szabo was in town for a wedding when he mistakenly identified Jones’ vehicle for his Uber as he was leaving a hotel his brother was staying in. After knocking on the window of Jones’ vehicle, Jones exited and allegedly punched Szabo in the head.

Szabo fell to the ground and cracked his head off the pavement. He later died from the injuries in the hospital, while Jones sped away in his white SUV.

Jones, a native of Kernerville, North Carolina, surrendered to authorities at the New York Police Department’s 114th Precinct stationhouse on Thursday morning along with his lawyer, according to reports. Jones remains in police custody at the Queens station and is awaiting arraignment.

Jones was hired by the Wake Forest men’s basketball program in May 2017. He had previously served as an assistant coach at UCF, VCU, and Florida Gulf Coast. Every team Jones was an assistant for won at least 22 games and appeared in either the NCAA Tournament, NIT, or CIT.

“Jamill brings new blood to our staff and some new perspectives,” said head coach Danny Manning at the time of Jones’ hiring. “I’ve gotten to know him over the last few years on the recruiting trail and he worked for one of my good friends in Joe Dooley. Jason Mraz dropped his sixth studio album Know. on Friday, Aug. 10, 2018 through Atlantic Records. The album is Mraz’s first studio release since July 2014, when he dropped Yes! which sold 400,000 units in the United States and was certified gold. On the day of his album release, Mraz appeared on the “Today” show in New York City to perform three songs with 20 students from Richmond’s SPARC (the School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community) program.

The lead single for Know. is the hit song “Have It All,” which streamed more than 4.5 million times in the United States following its debut on Live With Kelly and Ryan back in June.

Let me just say — if there is anyone who is feeling bummed out or dreadful because summer is coming to an end — it’s the college students. Especially, the anxious and ecstatic incoming freshmen who will be beginning the next chapter of their lives. So now, it’s time to buckle up and get serious about college.

As some adolescents ponder the question, “What makes some college students successful and others not so much?” Well, it’s either a person’s intelligence or insight. But, of course, there is always sheer luck. Most importantly, though, it’s the habits and skills put forth that will likely determine if you will be successful in college. Here are the five top rules for a college student’s success.

Be aggressive and take control

This rule applies directly to the Newbies. Unlike high school, where a teacher hovers over you and will hunt you down about getting your assignments and papers in on time — well it will be your job to do it on your own. What’s the message? Step up to bat and take responsibility. College is all about being independent and finding yourself.

Connect with your professor

I can’t stress how important your most reliable resource in college is your professor. In past years, it used to be that professors were only available during office hours. But that changed. Now, you can set up an in-person appointment or do it over Skype. What should I discuss? Talk about how to strategize and plan for an upcoming test and to go over anything you found confusing or didn’t understand in class. As cliché as this might sound, your professor can sometimes be your best friend.

Study; don’t “study”

Just so you know — most of the college work is done outside the classroom and just a heads up… Nobody quite tells you that. Your best bet is to find a quiet place to study like the library and make a schedule each week with the days and times you’ll be studying. Don’t kid yourself if you think copying over your notes, getting the e-readings, or listening to the lectures from class again counts as studying. It doesn’t. In order to excel in your classes, you need to just keep on studying your work.

Adjust your attention span

One of the most important golden rules, in order to succeed in college, is to give your undivided attention to the professor. Back in high school, you’re used to getting your content in short, entertaining blasts. For instance, 1 to 3 minute YouTube videos or character tweets. Hate to break it to you — not anymore. A professor is generally, in most cases, thinking in terms of a 50-minute lecture, divided into either two or three segments. Make sure you retrain your attention span.

Get to class

The hardest thing for a student in college is not to miss any classes throughout the semester. Most college students have a “cutting budget.” For instance, they will choose how many times they will miss class and still do well. Don’t follow that approach. Let’s just say, a class has 35 meetings, and you missed seven class, then you’ve missed 20 percent of the content. Not only will you likely flunk your class, but you will damage your GPA.

As a storied college football team, Virginia Tech will have another chance to recreate their football dynasty with big opportunities in the 2018-2019 season. With Justin Fuente in town, the talent level of recruits has increased dramatically, and replacing the critical elements of the dominant defensive group from just a year ago should not be a problem. Tremaine and Terrell Edmunds were not only stars but also pioneers for the next generation of Hokies players to be drafted in the first round.

2018-2019 Summary

Justin Fuente’s phenomenal turn around at Virginia Tech will continue in the 2018-2019 season. Sophomore quarterback Josh Jackson will look to build off of the incredible freshman season that saw him throw for almost 3,000 yards with 20 touchdowns to just nine interceptions. Losing six starters on defense will hurt, but for a group that only gave up 14.8 points per game, this dominant defensive group will look to only get better and fill the holes with the new opportunity. The opener against Florida State will be a tester, but the Hokies defense should be too much for the Seminoles allowing them to prevail. The only out of conference game to look at is the matchup with Notre Dame. If the Hokies prevail in that one, 10 wins should be a breeze.

UFC 227 took place last weekend at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and the California State Athletic Commission has finally released its list of medical suspensions from the pay-per-view event. Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is among those who have received lengthy bans, potentially missing six months due to a possible fracture in his right hand.

No other fighters have been suspended more than 60 days without contact.

Among those who will miss the next 60 days are Kevin Holland for a laceration on his eyelid, Alex Perez for a laceration on his elbow, and Wuliji Buren for a laceration on his scalp.

Nicki Minaj dropped her fourth studio album Queen on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018 through Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records. The album was initially scheduled to drop on June 15, but was later pushed back to Aug. 10. The album was pushed back yet again to Aug. 17 after Minaj had to clear a song which sampled legendary singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman. It marks Minaj’s first studio album since the 2014 hit Pinkprint.

The lead single for the album is “Chun-Li,” which was released on May 4. She released a follow-up single “Bed” which features Ariana Grande, who also dropped a studio album on Aug. 17, the following month. Prior to the release of “Bed,” Minaj dropped a promotional single with Lil Wayne titled “Rich Sex” that will also be featured on the album.

Following the album’s release, Minaj will continue promoting Queen by co-headlining the international NickiHndrxx Tour alongside rap star Future. The tour will officially kickoff in late September.

First-year students are the tiny fish that get set back in the ocean full of hungry sharks. They think they can handle it because they are getting off the high of being top dog in high school, but high school is nothing like college. Upperclassmen pray on freshmen; they are the fresh meat that knows nothing about what they are getting themselves into. Upperclassmen get a front seat show into the fear that freshmen are not afraid to show. It’s mainly watching an overdramatic soap opera. But, if you are one of those uneducated upperclassmen who doesn’t know what freshmen look like, here is how you find one.

They Are Always Lost

Three types of freshmen get lost. The first is the map, these freshmen are always carrying a map around and continuously scanning every sign like it will be on their next exam. Second, are asking everyone for directions. They will go from person to person asking where everything is, and they will never stop until their sophomore year when they won’t care where anything is. Then there are the runners. The runner’s dart from each building hoping one of them holds the classroom they need to be in.

Wear Their High School Attire

These are the freshmen who live in the glory days of high school. Some of these students were the ones who peaked in high school. But, they never wear their high school clothing in shame. They always have their head held up high. Nothing will stop them from bragging about their time spent in high school. It won’t be a shock if these students are still wearing their high school sweatshirts during their senior year.

Skinnier & Lighter

You can always tell the pretty, muscular and skinny students are freshmen because they have not met the freshmen fifteen. It’s a real thing, and no one is safe from it. Freshmen are nice and skinny looking thinking they will keep their figure, but they are horribly mistaken. No one is safe from the food they will consume in the next four years they attend college. They will watch their weight grow and grow until the idea of the gym comes into their head.

They Dress Like Celebrities

Like every person on the first day of school or picture day, they dress to impress. But from what upperclassman know from past experiences, sweatpants and sweatshirts are the best clothing that was ever created. Freshmen don’t do that, they think they need to dress up to be taken seriously. But, what they don’t know is they could wear a trash bag and still get people to talk to them. Dressing like they are going to a club or wedding won’t make them popular or attractive, it will just make them stand out more as freshmen.

Waits At The Cross Walk

Eventually, they will learn, but all freshmen are too scared to walk on the street when the red hand tells them not to walk. They only walk when the small man lights up and allows them to cross the street. As upperclassmen, you won’t have anyone stopping you from crossing the street. The stop and go lights don’t mean anything to them. But, to freshmen, they feel like the police are watching them and ready to arrest them if they cross when they aren’t supposed to. They will eventually find out that if they get hit at least, their tuition is paid.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for parents, that writes its time for back to school shopping. The day every child and adult in school hates but parents love because finally, the pests they had to deal with during the summer are for teachers and professors to take care of. But, the job isn’t finished yet. You still need to prepare them and yourselves for classes. That means going through the colorful aisle of Target or Walmart to purchase paper that you will probably never use. To help you make back to school shopping quick and easy, take our advice and enjoy your back to school Christmas.

Do Plan What You Need Ahead Of Time

Like a grocery list, list out what you need to get. This helps you save money and not waist mass amounts of paper that you will later figure out were trees, which will eventually make your brain consider you like a tree killer. And you don’t want to be a tree killer. Be smart with your back to school shopping and make a list. And, yes, we realize you are writing a list on paper which is part of a tree, but you are using the paper, and that’s what matters. The trees destiny of being used has been completed.

Don’t Go Shopping At The Last Minute

Don’t be that person who waits until the last day to shop for supplies. Some of the supplies you need will probably be sold out because you were the one that thought taking a nap was better than shopping. You will be lucky to get a small pack of pens and a stack of paper that you found on the floor. At that point, your best option is to go to the grocery store and grab a coloring book to take your notes. So, do the right thing and don’t be the last minute shopper.

Do Get A Flash Drive

Flash Drives are super crucial with high school and college. Most adults who are in school are taking notes on their laptops, but you can’t merely save everything onto your desktop. Having a flash drive can help you transport files to different devices or even help you in moments when your computer malfunctions or you need to print files in class. You don’t need one that holds a bunch of storage, a small 5gb will solve all your problems. Well, maybe not all your problems but you get our point.

Don’t Buy Everything You See

We get it, bright colors, fun pens, and cute notebooks. It’s like a messed up candy store, you want everything. But, listen to the pleading of your wallet, don’t go overboard. Get what you need and nothing else. You don’t need sparkle pens for college, nor do you need a Power Rangers lunch box. Get what you need and if you desperately want that Power Rangers lunch box, go back another day and purchase it.

Do Travel In Groups

Try to get together with friends or other parents. Create a plan and have each person get specific items you all can share. One get’s paper and pads, the other get pens and pencils, and so on. This helps save everyone money and time. It also makes shopping a little fun, especially when you all go out to lunch afterward. And another quick tip about that, find your wealthy friend and make them pay for lunch.
