University of Arizona Shuts Down Kappa Sigma Fraternity

The University of Arizona has shut down their chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity due to multiple violations of the student code of conduct.

According to a press release from Friday, July 27, the university says that Kappa Sigma Fraternity violated the Arizona Board of Regents Student Code of Conduct and therefore “must cease all activity on the UA campus.”

UA says that the chapter will have the ability to appeal the university’s decision until August 14 and will be able to propose a plan to reinstate the fraternity in May 2023 as long as no current members are affiliated with the fraternity.

via KGUN 9:

“This behavior is unfortunate, dangerous and not reflective of the university’s values,” said Kendal Washington White, UA dean of students, in a statement. “Our 600 student organizations play a significant role in the retention and graduation of students via fellowship, leadership opportunities, philanthropy and scholarship, preparing students for the workforce, and continued service in the community.”

This is the latest major fraternity or sorority investigation, suspension or closure in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who was shut down for hazing and the Lamda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.

It wasn’t until recently that being a chef became a potential avenue into worldwide fame and recognition, but as media has progressed an entire section of the entertainment industry has now become dedicated to watching people talk about and make food. The list below comprises of all the people who capitalized on this type of entertainment and rose to the tops of their field both as chefs and entertainers. It is through both their careers as chefs and the restaurants they own, as well as the revenue they make from the shows they appear on that has resulted in these people becoming so wealthy.

10. Tyler Florence Net Worth: $15 million

Instagram Photo

Tyler Florence is a chef and Food Network personality (as you will find almost everyone on this list is) who is known for hosting the shows Tyler’s Ultimate as well as The Great Food Truck Race. While he is sure to have brought in significant revenue from hosting these two shows he also is constantly opening restaurants under his own name as well as writing and releasing cookbooks. In 2009 he also opened a small chain of luxury kitchen supply stores which has, as well as his book sales and royalties from his shows been what has accumulated his wealth so far.

9. Giada De Laurentiis Net Worth: $20 million

Shutterstock

As most if not everyone on this list is, Giada De Laurentiis is an Italian born Food Network star who rose to prominence through the various cooking shows she has had on the channel over the years. She had to put in some work before getting to this point though and studied at a culinary school in Paris before moving back to the states and beginning her career as a chef at various well-known restaurants. Eventually, her work got noticed and she was offered her first show in 2005.

8. Mario Batali Net Worth: $25million

Shutterstock

He’s a weird looking, crock wearing, allegedly creepy guy, and while all of these things might have destroyed another person’s career, Mario Batali managed to create something of a culinary empire for himself. He is a restauranteur who owns twenty-six restaurants which would result in a significant net worth in itself, but that combined with his multiple shows on the Food Network as well as the various cookbooks he has released is what makes Mario so wealthy. Recently due to sexual misconduct allegations against him, many of his assets have been somewhat frozen, but this hasn’t had an impact on what he has already accumulated.

7. Bobby Flay Net Worth: $30 million

Shutterstock

One of the most recognizable names on the food network, Bobby Flay has built an empire of restaurants out of his name and brand. Dropping out of high school early to become a chef, Flay started out working in places like pizza parlors and Baskin Robbins before proving that he had an aptitude for the culinary arts. From there his career took off as he went to France to study cooking, and then returned to the states as an executive chef. His drive when it comes to all things food, as well as outgoing personality made him the perfect candidate to host cooking shows, and the fourteen programs he has appeared on since, as well as the multiple restaurants he owns are certainly a reflection of this.

6. Ina Garten Net Worth: $50 million

Shutterstock

Showing her business acumen early on in her career, Ina Garten was a budget analyst for the White House before shifting her focus to her cooking. This shift happened when she quit her job at the white house and purchased the Barefoot Contessa specialty foods store that was an immediate success and soon went on to expand seven times its original size. With the success of the store, she went on to publish a cookbook which again surpassed her expectations and became a best seller. Using the newfound fame of the Barefoot Contessa name, she went on to host a show of the same title that became one of the Food Networks most widely watched programs. It is the accumulated income that all these things have brought Garten that make her so wealthy today.

5. Emeril Lagasse Net Worth: $70 million

Shutterstock

Having one of the most recognizable chef catchphrases ever, it is probably astounding just how much revenue saying the word “bam!” has brought in for Emeril Lagasse. Graduating from culinary school in 1979, Lagasse quickly became an executive chef and was nominated for a chef of the year by 1983. He used this new found notoriety to get on the Food Network where he was featured on ten episodes of Great Chefs. From here he got his own show and has been a featured Food Network host ever since. He owns five restaurants and has put out out ten cookbooks, as well as owning multiple cooking product lines and getting many endorsement deals.

4. Wolfgang Puck Net Worth: $75 million

Shutterstock

Having more than just a really neat name, Wolfgang Puck is an Austrian-born, American chef, restaurant owner and even occasionally does some acting. His main source of income though, comes from the various cooking companies he owns and the restaurants that are under them. The Wolfgang Puck Companies include the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group, Wolfgang Puck Worldwide, Inc. and Wolfgang Puck Catering and under them are more than twenty fine dining restaurants, multiple catering services, and various other companies that produce cookbooks, coffee and even canned foods. Between this and his multiple appearances on Iron Chef and various other cooking shows it’s no wonder that Puck is so wealthy.

3. Rachael Ray Net Worth: $80 million

Shutterstock

Rachael Ray is an American born chef and businesswoman who initially popularized the concept of “thirty minute meals.” Feeling that many people were unnecessarily reluctant to cook, she started teaching classes about meals that could be completed in thirty minutes or less. CBS picked up on the success of one of these classes and asked her to be featured in one of their segments. From here the Food Network asked her to host the show 30 Minute Meals which lasted for eleven seasons and led to her being featured in multiple other shows as well. This combined with her large amount of product endorsement deals is what has led to her being so wealthy.

2. Gordon Ramsay Net Worth: $175 Million

Shutterstock

One of the most popular and rage fuled chef out there today, Gordan Ramsay built his television career off of both food and yelling at the people who were making it. He owns multiple michelin stared restaurants and seems to be a success at everything he sets his mind to. His first restaurant ever got three Michelin stars just three years after opening it, and he continued to gain prominence from there. Since then he has continued to open many restaurants, as well as become a television personality, and it is his notoriety in both english and american pop culture that has made his so wealthy from the entertainment business.

1. Jamie Oliver Net Worth: $400 Million

Shutterstock

While arguably one of the most well known chefs in America, Jamie Oliver is indisputably so Europe. After getting noticed in a BBC documentary about the restaurant he was working at, the television station noticed Oliver’s talents and asked him to host his own show. From there he released a number one best selling cookbook in the UK and from that point was immediately launched into celebrity chef stardom. Last Chance U Season 3 Cast: Where Are They Now?

$

0

The Netflix hit documentary “Last Chance U” returned for season 3 earlier this month. It was the same hard-hitting show giving an all-access look at a community college football program, but this time we shifted from East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Mississippi to Independence Community College in Kansas.

Once again, we met a brash coach and a number of players who were looking to take their skills to the next level to pursue their dreams of playing Division I football.

Along the way, we got to learn about some of the troubled pasts of the show’s stars, we met a willing mentor who was trying to get the best out of the young men, and those who put it in all of the work to earn the scholarship offers they were hoping for.

From players like Malik Henry to Rakeem Boyd and Emmit Goodwin to Bobby Bruce, there were players you could root for, players you were worried about, and those who had their captivating stories.

So where did the top stars from the show end up for the 2018 college football season? Let’s take a look.

Malik Henry, Quarterback

"Sometimes you just gotta go with it and make, you know, bad things turn into a good situation for yourself." @malik_henry16 #LastChanceU pic.twitter.com/7ii3ix469k

— Last Chance U (@LastChanceU) July 21, 2018

Malik Henry entered this season of “Last Chance U” as the most well-known player on the team. The star signal-caller was a top recruit when he enrolled at Florida State, but he quickly left the program for reasons that remain unclear. However, early on in season 3, it became clear that his attitude and temper made him a difficult player to deal with.

Throughout the season, Henry often found himself jawing with opponents and even getting in verbal altercations with the Independence coaching staff.

The concerns over his attitude seem to have made programs hesitant about giving him a shot under center and he has yet to receive a Division I offer.

Bobby Bruce, Linebacker

Watching Last Chance U and all i gotta say is Play the homie BOBBY BRUCE pic.twitter.com/2qBErpYqHj

— Gibby Pulido (@GRPulido1990) July 28, 2018

Bruce was described by the coaching staff as an undisciplined player. Throughout the season, there was a bit of foreshadowing when Bruce discussed how he nearly got in trouble before coming to Independence and that if he returned home he would be putting himself in bad situations.

The coaching staff even referenced season 2 star Isaiah Wright, who was arrested for murder.

At the end of the season, concerns about Bruce’s off-field issues proved to be accurate when it was revealed that he had been arrested for robbery. From a Florida Today report:

Police say the assailants in the case used Snapchat — a mobile app that allows users to send messages and photos that expire after they have been viewed — to lure the victim into a trap outside his home.

Dwight Bobby Bruce, 20, of the 1000 block of Kennedy Court, Titusville, is charged with armed robbery. He joins his alleged partner in the crime, Andreal Curry, 19, who was arrested Tuesday.

Bruce and Curry were each being held Saturday at the Brevard County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Despite the issues, it appears that Bruce will be returning to Independence for the 2018 season.

I want to thank my former player @bobbybruce20 for coming to workouts today! It is great to see him the day before he goes back to Independence CC to finish up🏈💯🐍#BALLER #LastChanceU #BDC pic.twitter.com/v9z6xlmj7G

— Coach Matt Diesel (@mdiesel321) July 23, 2018

Emmit Gooden, Defensive Line

Thankful…🌹🤙🏿 pic.twitter.com/yDuRTeBgwD

— TheRealEmmitG93 (@TheRealEmmitG93) July 11, 2018

Gooden was one of the best on-field performers for Independence during the 2017 season, recording 81 tackles. He was consistently seen throughout the season coming up with big plays for the Pirates and he turned that standout performance into a Division I offer.

Not only will Gooden be playing at the Division I level, he will be playing in the SEC after signing with the Tennessee Volunteers, the school he originally committed to in 2014.

Rakeem Boyd, Running Back

"I don't think they've seen me at my full potential yet."@boyd_rakeem pic.twitter.com/fGLpLDj9Nu

— Last Chance U (@LastChanceU) July 27, 2018

Rakeem Boyd transfered to Independence from Texas A&M. He was one of the most talented players on the roster, but quickly lost his starting job due to inconsistency on the field. However, Boyd was still able to lead the team in rushing and turned that into a high-profile offer, joining Emmit Gooden in the SEC.

When the 2018 season rolls around, Boyd will be suiting up for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Kingston Davis, Running Back

One of my favorite players from season 3 Last Chance U, Kingston Davis! @_King_LD #UAB #LastChanceU pic.twitter.com/q2j6L42PRL

— 843 Sports Edits🤞🏽❄ (@843SportsEdits) July 24, 2018

After dropping to the JUCO level from Michigan, Davis found himself buried on the depth chart behind Boyd and Jamal Scott. However, despite the lack of playing time and not being featured in the background, Davis will be suiting up next season for UAB.

WATCH: 31-Second MMA Fight Delivers Knockout Of The Year

AXS TV

While UFC and Bellator MMA are the top mixed martial arts promotions in the country, we are often treated to some spectacular moments from promotions filled with the sport’s up-and-coming prospects. After all, they have more to gain by putting on highlight-reel promotions and almost never are willing to play it safe.

That was the case on Friday night when Mumia Abu Dey-Ali and Mitch Aguiar went toe-to-toe at Legacy FC 46 at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Newport News, Virginia on AXS TV.

The two men wasted no time getting in each other’s faces for what was the wildest 31 seconds we have seen inside of the cage this year. To add to the excitement, the fight ended with what may be one of the most spectacular knockouts of the year.

Immediately out of the gate, Dey-Ali cracked Aguiar, a former Navy SEAL, with a left hand that dropped him to the mat. From there on out, it was non-stop chaos with the two men scrambling and exchanging heavy blows.

It looked like Aguiar was about to score a comeback win when he dropped Dey-Ali with a shot of his own, but as he charged his opponent Dey-Ali ducked and flipped Aguiar over his body. That’s when both men popped up, Dey-Ali landed another heavy shot, and Aguiar crumbled to the mat unconscious.

It was as good as it gets in a 30-second fight.

Check it out:

WWE Hall of Famer Josip Nikolai Peruzovic, better known by his stage name, Nikolai Volkoff, with a career lasting nearly three decades, has passed away at the age of 70, just days after he was released from a Maryland hospital where he had been treated for dehydration.

Bradley Kim, a defensive back for the Air Force football team, has become a trailblazer. This weekend, the sophomore took to social media and published an article on OutSports.com that revealed he is gay. While we have seen multiple athletes coming out as openly gay in recent years, Kim’s story marks a first.

By coming out, Kim becomes the first openly gay player to ever suit up for one of the service academies — Air Force, Army, and Navy.

Kim published a lengthy statement on Instagram.

“I hope that I can serve as an example to those who are allowing their fear of acceptance to change who they are,” Kim wrote. “I almost gave up my dream of playing division 1 football for fear of not being accepted by everyone, but today I am happy to say that I am a cadet at the Air Force Academy playing the sport I love with amazing people standing behind me and supporting me.

“If anyone feels like they don’t have a voice or feel like they are alone, just know there are plenty of people out there like you and me, and more that are willing to talk to you about it. God bless all and thank you to everyone who has made me feel comfortable to live my most genuine life.”

According to OutSports, Kim told his teammates on Friday before the news became public. The article states that his teammates gave him a standing ovation.

Air Force released a statement which read, “The academy strives to foster a culture where everyone gives and receives dignity and respect so that each individual has the opportunity to fulfill their potential.”

It is always great to see people getting comfortable in their own skin and it says a lot about the progress that we continue to make as a country as athletes break down barriers.

Kim and the Falcons kickoff their 2018 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 1 against the Stony Brook Seawolves.

Pop Culture

– The first (very vague) teaser trailer for Jonah Hill and Emma Stone’s new Netflix series is here.

  • Maniac official synopsis:
    • Set in a world somewhat like our world, in a time quite similar to our time, Maniac tells the stories of Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons. Annie’s disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia. Neither of their lives have turned out quite right, and the promise of a new, radical kind of pharmaceutical treatment—a sequence of pills its inventor, Dr. James K. Mantleray (Justin Theroux), claims can repair anything about the mind, be it mental illness or heartbreak—draws them and ten other strangers to the facilities of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech for a three-day drug trial that will, they’re assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned.

– Stranger Things season three has been delayed to Summer 2019.

Sports

– Washington Nationals’ Trea Turner apologizes for offensive tweets.

– #3 overall pick Sam Darnold has yet to report to New York Jets training camp.

‘Stranger Things’ Season Three Delayed Until 2019

Netflix

Happy Monday, folks! Wanted to start your week off on the right foot? TOO BAD, because I’m here to ruin it with the news that the third season of Stranger Things will not be premiering until Summer 19 — some 18 months after the second season premiered.

At this stage, Stranger Things is probably Netflix’s biggest show by a mile, so taking the additional time to make sure the final product is as polished as possible is a no-brainer. HOWEVA, given that Netflix’s programming didn’t pull in as many new viewers as expected, they need the return of their heaviest hitter sooner rather than later.

The third season of Stranger Things is currently in production.

via The Verge:

During today’s (July 29) TCA presentation, Netflix’s Vice President of Original Content, Cindy Holland noted that the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer and Shawn Levy, were aware of the expectations for the next season of the supernatural show, and that “they want to deliver something bigger and better than what they did last year. And so, they really want to take the time to get it right.” Holland also indicated that the next season will have some more extensive special effects than the prior seasons. The streaming service didn’t reveal a release date for the season.

While no official release date has been announced, we can promise you that when it is, we’ll bring you the news faster than Eleven can say ‘waffle’.

The King (Leonardo DiCaprio) Has A New Girlfriend

Leonardo DiCaprio — aka The King — has got himself new girlfriend: 21-year-old (!!!) Argentinian-American model Camila Morrone. The two have recently been spotted yachting around St. Tropez, France, after they began dating in December 2017.

What a life Leo lives: he goes from shooting a movie with Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Kurt Russell, Timothy Olyphant, James Marsden, Damian Lewis, Emile Hirsch, Burt Reynolds, and Al Pacino to cruising on a yacht off the coast of France with a model half his age.

This isn’t the first time that Morrone has popped up on the Internet as Vogue called her an ‘Instagram breakout star’ in 2016.

via Daily Mail:

The star was spotted with her boyfriend Leonardo, 43, and her mother Lucila Sola, 42, as they headed out for lunch at celebrity hotspot Le Club 55. Camila and DiCaprio was first linked in mid-December, when he was spotted leaving her house.

The pair have since attended a number of high profile events together – including Ellen Degeneres’ 60th birthday party in LA, as well as the Coachella Festival, where they were spotted cozying up during Eminem’s set.

They even enjoyed a holiday to Colorado together in January, with Leonardo’s close pal and fellow actor Tobey Maguire.

Gotta love Leo bringing his girl’s mom around despite the fact that he’s likely on to the next one within six months — now that’s a gentleman.
