Evangeline Lilly is a Canadian actress, arguably best known for her roles in the ABC Lost television series and the Marvel film franchise. Added to that, she also has quite a few awards and nominations to her name. Let’s take a look at her life and career over the years, starting with her net worth!

Evangeline Lilly Net Worth: $15 Million

Evangeline Lilly’s net worth is estimated to be around $15 million. Let’s take a look at her life over the years to see just how she got so far!

The Early Years

Evangeline Lilly was born in Alberta and raised in British Columbia, where she attended W. J. Mouat Secondary School. She later went on to attend the University of British Columbia, where she studied International Relations. Lilly’s first acting roles were in commercials and small television roles in shows like Smallville and Kingdom Hospital.

Lilly soon came to prominence after being cast in the starring role of Kate Austen in the ABC series Lost in 2004, with the show ultimately lasting until 2010. Her work in the role later helped her win a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award nomination. Ironically enough, the role almost had to be recast early in production after Lilly initially had issues acquiring a work visa to enter the United States. In 2005, she also appeared in the Canadian film, The Long Weekend.

In 2008, Lilly appeared in the Academy Award-winning film The Hurt Locker, earning the Gotham Award for Best Ensemble Cast with the rest of the film’s cast. The same year, she appeared in The Hurt Locker. In 2010, she announced plans to become a writer, releasing the children’s book, The Squickerwonkers., in 2013. In 2012, she would appear in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug as Tauriel, a role she would reprise the following year in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. In 2015, she appeared as the character Hope van Dyne in Ant-Man; she reprised the role in the 2018 Ant-Man and the Wasp, which was the first time a Marvel film featured a female hero in the title.

This Is Bob Odenkirk’s Favorite ‘Breaking Bad’ Scene

AMC

There are two types of people in the world: people who think Breaking Bad is the greatest television show to ever exist and the uneducated (or as Bane would say, the uninitiated).

Yeah, some people will argue that The Sopranos or The Wire deserves the title of GOAT TV show, but those people are wrong. In my humble, amateur opinion, Breaking Bad‘s combination of writing, cinematography, and character development puts it at the top (or front, I guess?) of Mount Rushmore.

But not far behind Breaking Bad in the pantheon of great TV shows is it’s own prequel Better Call Saul, which is centered around professional scumbag lawyer Saul Goodman.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Breaking BadEntertainment Weekly has been churning out a ton of articles, one of which reveals Bob Odenkirk’s — the actor who plays Saul Goodman in both Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul — favorite scene.

via UPROXX:

“It was so goddamn well-written,” recalls Odenkirk. “I loved that first scene where he introduces himself. It was so different in tone from anything I had done… I couldn’t believe how much Saul there was. I’m aghast, alarmed, at my own confidence in playing the character. I mean, I didn’t know what the f— I was doing. I was just taking a run at it, and more than half expecting to be told, ‘You can go home now. We’re going to get a real actor.’ I was amazed at how completely I embraced the character and dug in. The monologue is really fun, where he’s telling Walter White that he’s a fraud and that it’s a front. And he’s just enjoying himself. That was really fun to play, and I fully understood how much fun it was at the time.”

Given the type of character Goodman is, it’s unsurprising that the actor who plays him shares some of that self-confidence.

Better Call Saul will return to AMC for its fourth season on Monday, August 6, at 9 p.m. EST.

WWE SmackDown Live Stream: How To Watch ‘SmackDown’ Online – 07/03/18

0

It’s the SmackDown before the 4th of July and it looks like it’s going to be a fun one! Old teams are back together, the rare inter-gender match, AND a Pancake eating contest! The blue brand hopes to send everyone into their Independence Day on a high! Here’s how and when to watch this week’s SmackDown Live.

Tonight SmackDown Live will be at the Century Link Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

The lovable but odd pairing of Daniel Bryan and Kane are back together. The former Tag Team champs have reformed their team, lovingly called “Team Hell No” and look to get some revenge on The Bludgeon Brothers. The two former members of the Wyatt family have been destroying SmackDown’s Tag Team Division as of late but the mix of Bryan’s abilities and Kane’s size could be enough to derail the two hammer-wielding goons.

James Ellsworth is back and he brought back his knack for garnering disdain from the Women’s Division. After costing Asuka the title at Money In The Bank, The Empress of Tomorrow will get a chance to get her hands on Carmella’s faithful sidekick in a rare inter-gender match. Is Ellsworth ready for Asuka? Most likely not…

The men’s title scene will also see some interesting matches. AJ Styles will be facing Rusev at Extreme Rules but before he can do that, he’ll have to go through Rusev’s minstrel Aiden English first. And not to be outdone Jeff Hardy has issued an Independence Day open challenge for his US TItle. Who will answer the call? WIll an old vet show up to try and add to their trophy case? Or will we see a new young up and comer take his shot at the Charismatic Enigma?

Tonight’s SmackDown Live should be a fun one. If nothing else we at least get The New Day’s Pancake Eating contest!

It certainly seems that her career is on a major upturn, so don’t be surprised if you start seeing her in even more movies coming up.

Kappa Sigma Theta Fraternity Kicked Off Texas State University Campus

The Kappa Sigma Theta fraternity at Texas State University has decided not to return to the Interfraternity Council after reviewing the administration’s new rules.

Following the death of fraternity pledge Matthew Ellis, a 20-year-old Phi Kappa Psi pledge that passed away in November, Texas State University formed a task force to review the governing policies for Greek affairs.

After the review, Greek life was reinstated at the university on March 1, 2018, with the condition that the fraternities sign off on the updated code of conducts. All of the fraternities at the university signed, except one.

Sam Zablosky, the president of the Kappa Sigma Theta fraternity, said they felt that university’s process “was not entirely fair.”

via Texas State:

“There was some ambiguous stuff that rose some concerns for me,” Zablosky said. “I didn’t want to sign something I wasn’t sure about. When I met with the IFC president, (Jake) Negvesky, and told him I had thoughts of not re-signing with the IFC, that didn’t sit well with the school.”

Some fraternity members said they feel that the new rules have too many restrictions. New implementations include a restricted rushing season, an altered pledge process, mandated training before all social events and monthly reports to be submitted to the Greek Affairs Office.

Seth McNeill, IFC vice president of recruitment and Theta Chi treasurer, said it was important to extend the length of recruitment and shorten the new member period. McNeill said this allows chapters to educate more students about history, creed and values.

This is the latest major Greek life overhaul in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who was shut down for hazing and the Lamda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen.

College Football Injury Report Could Get Significant Overhaul

NCAA New Injury Report

College football has a long-standing tradition unlike any other in American sports: withholding information regarding injured players. College football coaches have consistently used an injured player as an opportunity to distract or mislead the opposing team. By not releasing information regarding an injured player, coaches make it so other teams do not know how to prepare for upcoming games. If your gameplan to play against a certain player who ends up not playing due to injury, you have wasted a lot of practice time if not in need of an entirely new gameplan.

That tradition could be coming to an end, however. The athletic directors of the Big Ten football conference have submitted a proposal to institute a national system to report injuries for college football. While the exact details of the system are unknown, there seems to be widespread belief that a mandated injury reporting system is likely to be implemented. This system would mark a clear turn away from the strategic concealment of information and towards a transparency that would unprecedented in college football.

The NFL has had a mandatory injury reporting policy since 1946. The current NFL policy requires three practice reports during the week, with the first coming as early as five days before the game. Although a system for college football world seems inevitable, one that goes as far as its professional counterpart may be harder to achieve. “We don’t know I we want to report as many days as the NFL, but clearly on Mondays, if somebody is injured from Saturday and you know they’re not going to play the following Saturday because they broke their leg, why not just say that?” said Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith.

The main reason for this new system is the change in sports gambling laws occurring throughout the country. With legalized gambling comes questions about an informed betting public and fair play, especially at the amateur level. Still, there are going to be coaches who will rebel against this new policy. College football is a sport in which every inch is draped in tradition and change is rarely welcome. Even if coaches were open to breaking tradition it still wouldn’t mean that they are ready to give up a competitive advantage. In January of 2018, Washington State coach Mike Leach said “whatever weaknesses or vulnerabilities that we have as a team, I can’t possibly fathom why I would have any interest in revealing that to my opponent.”

While it might seem inappropriate for a coach to use an injury of one of his young players as a chance at gain an advantage over the other team, don’t underestimate how often it happens in the world of college football. Even so, a mandated system is a necessity in the modern age of sports and with the legalization of gambling pushing the proposal one would expect a system of some kind to be implemented very quickly.

Fourth Of July: Is There Mail Delivery Today?

The Fourth of July is a day dedicated to being patriotic and celebrating what it means to be American in every way shape and form! Well except for sending a patriotic letter or something, because all U.S postal services will be closed due to it being a federal holiday. What this means is that the Fourth of July is a holiday recognized by the US government, so any nonessential services it provides (sorry police and garbage men, you’re too essential) like the postal service and most banks are closed for the day with employees still being paid.

The main point is if you are reading this before the 4th then send whatever you need to quick! And if you are reading this on the 4th, well… uhhh…  hopefully you have access to a bike or car or don’t mind walking a whole bunch because no one is else is going to deliver your packages for you, not to worry though! As all government services will return to their normal schedules on the 5th.

All federal offices, including post offices, will be closed on Independence Day, Wednesday, July. 4th

What are the other Postal Holidays?

Here’s a list of all the postal holidays, where you can expect no mail in your mailbox…

  1. Monday, January 2: New Year’s Day (observed)
  2. Monday, January 16: Martin Luther King Jr. birthday
  3. Monday, February 20: Washington’s Birthday
  4. Monday, May 29: Memorial Day
  5. Tuesday, July 4: Independence Day
  6. Monday, September 4: Labor Day
  7. Monday, October 9: Columbus Day
  8. Saturday, November 11: Veterans Day
  9. Thursday, November 23: Thanksgiving Day
  10. Monday, December 25: Christmas Day

Which national holidays does FedEx deliver mail on?

Here’s a list of all the national holidays, where FedEx still picks up and delivers packages to your doorstep…

  1. Monday, Jan. 16: Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  2. Tuesday, Feb. 20: Presidents Day
  3. Monday, Oct. 9: Columbus Day
  4. Saturday, Nov. 11: Veterans Day

Now that you know when the mail will and will not be delivered, you’re fully prepared and (theoretically) will not wait until the last moment to send those important packages!

Dabo Swinney Net Worth 2018: How Much Is Dabo Worth?

Dabo Swinney Net Worth

Christian Petersen/Getty Images

Dabo Swinney is a former American College Football Coach at Clemson University in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Swinney was promoted to the title of head coach before the 2009 season and held the role as the interim coach when Tommy Bowden stepped down in the middle of the 2008 campaign. Let’s take a look at how Swinney was able to become of the most successful coaches in the modern era of College Football while also being able to bring his own guts to each game. If you’re unfamiliar with that last reference about guts, look it up. That postgame interview was absolutely legendary.

Dabo Swinney Net Worth As of 2018: $20 Million

Dabo Swinney’s net worth is around $20 million. Now it’s time to see how Swinney was able to make an extremely historic program like Clemson into a powerhouse that will stay at the top for years to come.

Humble Beginnings: 1990-1992

Roll Tide Roll! Swinney was raised in Pelham, Alabama and attended the University of Alabama, where he played wide receiver from 1990-1992. As a walk-on, he caught seven passes for 81 yards in his three-year career with the Crimson Tide. Swinney graduated from Alabama in 1993 with a degree in commerce and business administration as well as a master’s in business administration in 1995.

Sweet Home Alabama: 1993-2003

As Swinney was pursuing his master’s degree, he was a graduate assistant coach for the Tide from 1993-1995. He later fluctuated between being the wide receivers and tight ends coach until he was fired with the rest of Mike DuBose’s staff in 2001. After being fired, Swinney worked on development projects for AIG Baker Real Estate in his home state of Alabama, led by his former strength coach Rich Wingo.

A Fresh Start: 2003-2008

After leaving his job with AIG Baker in 2003, Swinney was tabbed by Head Coach Tommy Bowden to be the wide receivers coach at Clemson University. Ol’ Dabo accepted the position and quickly became one of the crowned jewels on the Tigers’ coaching staff. He proved to be an excellent coach and recruiter by getting some of the country’s blue-chip recruits to commit to Clemson. He was named as one of the top 25 recruiters in College Football by rivals.com in 2007.

Bring Your Own Guts: 2008-Present

Getty Images

Once Tommy Bowden resigned after the first six games of the 2008 season, Dabo became the interim head coach for the remainder of the year and was later promoted to full-time head coach for the 2009 season. After a 9-5 season in 2009 and 6-7 season in 2010, Clemson fans weren’t happy and it looked as if Swinney was on the hot seat. Well, he got off the hot seat rather fast. Since 2011, Clemson has won 10 more games and has made it to the College Football Playoff three times. In those three appearances, the Tigers have made the National Championship game twice, losing to Alabama 45-40 during the 2015 season and beating Alabama 35-31 on a last-second touchdown during the 2016 season.

Swinney has proved year after year that he one of the elite coaches in College Football and there shouldn’t be any doubt that he will remain on top for years to come. Clemson just seems to keep on reloading every year and it should be interesting to see if they make yet another run to the College Football Playoff for the fourth consecutive season.

Ol’ Dabo will enter the 2018 season with a record of 101-30 and they are the favorites to win the ACC’s Atlantic Division title alongside the ACC title as well. There really isn’t much competition for Clemson other than Florida State in that one division. However, a Clemson and Miami championship game would be yet another statement game for Swinney. With a possible quarterback battle brewing between senior Kelly Bryant and freshman Trevor Lawrence, will Dabo reach glory again? We will find out very soon.

Top 5 Best New York Giants Draft Picks In Team History

Best New York Giants Draft Picks

Getty Images

If you are a New York Giants fan like myself, to say the season was one to forget would be the understatement of the century. Like many others, I had dreams of the Giants possibly playing in the Super Bowl this year, and instead, the team had one of the worst records in franchise history at 3-13. To their credit, they did suffer from a lot of injuries, but it was a season full of turmoil, that included head coach Ben McAdoo getting fired (thank god), beloved quarterback Eli Manning getting benched for a loser like Geno Smith and ending his consecutive starting streak, and fan favorite Odell Beckham Jr. breaking his ankle. Not great!

Fortunately, the team lost enough games to give themselves the 2nd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and a chance to get a franchise changing player. For the record, as much as I love Eli Manning and all he’s done for the team, he’s on the wrong side of 37, and I would like to see them draft Josh Rosen to take over the reigns from him at quarterback.

Known as one of the blue blood franchises of the NFL, the Giants have had a lot of success in the draft over the years, although it may not seem like it because of some of their recent draft duds, we’re not going to talk about that. So instead of talking about the dark days of recent, I’m going to remember the good times, and let you know of the 5 best draft picks in team history.

5. Phil Simms – 1979 Draft, 1st Round 7th Overall Pick – Morehead St

Instagram Photo

Many of you may know Phill Simms as the annoying analyst who called games with Jim Nantz on CBS who was eventually replaced by Tony Romo who is also incredibly annoying, and while I wasn’t alive for the prime of Simms’ career, I have done my research on him (hearing stories from my dad), and I know how much he meant to the franchise. When Simms was drafted out of Morehead State in 1979, fans were not pleased drafting an unknown quarterback since I couldn’t even tell you what state his college is in. His first few years in the league he took an absolute beating both on the field and off the field from the brutal New York media. Eventually, Simms put it all together, and led the Giants to their first Super Bowl victory in 1986, and was MVP of the game by completing a record 88% of his passes in the game. He won another Super Bowl in 1990 but did not play in the game as he was injured. No, Simms is not a Hall of Famer, but he meant a lot to the franchise.

4. Odell Beckham Jr. – 2014 Draft, 1st Round 12th Overall Pick – LSU

Instagram Photo

Call me a homer on this one, but I love Odell Beckham Jr, absolutely love him. Yes, I know he comes across as a “me first” player, the diva wide receiver, a baby, blah, blah, blah, and quite frankly I don’t give a damn, the dude is an absolute baller. Since he stepped foot on the gridiron in 2014 where he has only played in 47 games, he’s reeled in 313 catches, 4,424 yards, and 38 touchdowns. Before he got to New York, the offense was near the bottom of the NFL, and Eli was playing terribly, and Beckham turned that all around. I’m aware that you can’t win a Super Bowl when a wide receiver is your highest paid player which Beckham wants to be, but the guy is an absolute bonafide superstar, and I hope the Giants give him a contract that keeps him happy. I’m already giddy just thinking about hearing Rosen to Beckham on Sports Center for the next decade.

3. Michael Strahan – 1993 Draft, 2nd Round 40th Overall Pick – Texas Southern

Instagram Photo

Strahan may be my favorite Giant of all time, and he was one of the biggest draft steals in NFL history. He’s also going to be the only non-first round pick on this list, so add that to his list of accomplishments. His 15 year career included 141.5 sacks (6th most in league history), 7 Pro Bowls, Defensive Player of the Year in 2001 where he set the record for most sacks in a season at 22.5, 4 First Team All-Pros, and a Super Bowl title where he was one of the anchors of my favorite Giant team ever, that beat the 18-0 New England Patriots in 2007. The younger generation may know him better for all the great work he’s done on television, but for me, Strahan will always be known for the ass whoopings he gave to quarterbacks every Sunday for Big Blue.

2. Phillip Rivers – 2004 NFL Draft, 1st Round 4th Overall Pick – NC State

Instagram Photo

Now I know what you’re probably thinking, “Uh hey idiot, Phil Rivers never played for the Giants.” Congrats on solving that brainbuster, Sherlock, but let me get to my point. Yes, everyone and their mother knows that Phil Rivers never played a down for the New York Football Giants, but they traded him for Eli Manning, who led the franchises to two Super Bowls, both of which where he beat Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, giving the tandem their only losses in the Super Bowl. So yes, Rivers was never a Giant, but I couldn’t put Eli on this list because the Giants technically never drafted him, so this is how I’m getting around that.

1. Lawrence Taylor – 1981 NFL Draft, 1st Round 2nd Overall Pick – UNC

Instagram Photo

If you were expecting someone else to be at the top of this list, well I’m sorry to tell you, but you’re an idiot. LT was without a doubt the best defensive player in NFL history, and it really isn’t up for debate. Where do I even begin? Left Tackles in today’s game should be thanking him every day for the giant contracts they get because he single handily changed the game with his pass rushing abilities from the quarterback’s blind side. Those pass rushing abilities resulted in 132.5 career sacks, 2 Super Bowl titles, Rookie of the Year in 1981, 10 Pro Bowls, 10 First Team All-Pros, 3 Defensive Player of the Year Awards, and the last defensive player in league history to win NFL MVP. He may not have been as good off the field as he was on the field (that’s putting it VERY lightly), but there never has, nor will there probably ever be a player like LT.

Power Ranking The Worst Hangovers Of The Year

Ah, hangovers: proof that God really does have a twisted sense of ironic humor.

Just like most things in life, every alcohol-related action has a reaction. Want to cut loose and dance like no ones watching? Fine, but be prepared to feel like death might be a better option the next day. Love the taste of whiskey? That’s cool — drink too much and you’ll puke it all back out. Finally bag that girl you’ve been trying to get with for 2 months? Well, guess what, alcohol will probably wipe out your entire memory of it.

Man’s relationship with alcohol, and therefore hangovers, is a long and complicated one.  However, while all men may be created equal, all hangovers are not. Some are headaches that last half the day, some are stomach bugs that last an hour or two.

But some hangovers — they pop up about four or five times a year — qualify in their own class. We’ve all had them, too: whether it be because of a birthday or a holiday, these are the worst hangovers of the year.

4. The Day after Memorial Day Weekend

For many people, Memorial Day Weekend marks the beginning of summer, and with that, comes the celebration of the fact that the glorious sun has returned to our lives.

But by Tuesday — after three straight days of sun and beer — your body reminds you why it’s probably a good thing that summer isn’t a year-round season.

3. July 5th

The biggest problem with July 4th is, well, July 5th. Sometimes, we’ll get lucky and July 4th will fall on a Friday or Saturday, but for those other 5 out of 7 years, most of us have to get up and go to work the next morning.

The second biggest problem is that July 4th, more times than not, is a day-drinking affair. And the longer you drink, the longer the hangover … it’s simple science.

2. Thanksgiving Day

Wooof, the Thanksgiving Day hangover.

As we all know, Thanksgiving Eve is the “biggest DUI/drinking night of the year” (at least this is what people tell me), and there’s a reason it has that reputation.

Thanksgiving Eve is about seeing old friends and partying in your old hometown, and because of that, things can get pretty out of hand pretty quickly. It’s funny how the brain works, take a couple of shots and reminisce about old times, and suddenly you’ll be drinking like your 17 again.

But unlike when you were a teenager who “never got hungover” (we all have said that at some point in our lives), the hangover is very real this time around

1. The Day After Your Birthday

What else was going to take the top spot? The hangover that you get the day after your birthday is unlike any other.

First comes the pregame, where your friends (if they’re good friends) have done their best to get you as drunk as possible. Then, if you’ve somehow made it to the bar, everyone who is there that knows it’s your birthday will buy you a shot.  On top of all that, it’s one of the only nights of the year you drink for free, which means nothing is off limits and everything is down the hatch.

All that said, there’s something about the birthday hangover that feels like a right of passage, a necessary evil … a part of growing up.

Are The 2018 Golden State Warriors Officially The Best Team Ever?

Five All-Stars in the starting lineup. Durant, Curry, Thompson, Green and now Cousins. The Warriors already had a lineup that could challenge some of the best of all time, but does adding Demarcus Cousins make this starting lineup the best in NBA history? Let’s put these lineups to the test against four of the best lineups in NBA history. You can be the judge of who would win in a hypothetical seven-game series, or maybe try simulating it in 2k!

1985-86 Celtics

Instagram Photo

This Celtics team is arguably the greatest of all time. From Larry Bird to Kevin McHale and Bill Walton, this team had its stars. They also got great contributions from Danny Ainge, Dennis Johnson, and Robert Parish, who were All-Stars too. That gives the Celtics a total of six All-Stars, which matches the Warriors total. The Celtics won two titles in three years, and had one of the most dominant stretches in NBA history, going 40-1 at home. Their incredible scoring ability and great defense would be a great challenge for the Warriors.

1986-87 Lakers

Instagram Photo

Showtime. Kareem, Magic, James Worthy, you know their names. They flew up and down the court all year long, blowing teams out. They ran all the way to the Finals, where they beat the Celtics. A.C Green was the team’s fourth All-Star, and the Showtime Lakers will always be among the league’s best teams.

Could they beat the Warriors? We’ll never know, but they definitely would have a good shot. The Showtime Lakers were a long, athletic team who could defend the 2018 Warriors. With the speed they had running the floor, they would definitely be able to penetrate the tough Warriors defense too.

1995-96 Bulls

Instagram Photo

Widely considered to be the greatest team of all time, spearheaded by the one and only Michael Jordan. With help from Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and a deep bench led by Steve Kerr, the Bulls set a then NBA record going 72-10 on their way to the championship. The Bulls went 15-3 in the playoffs, and were a top-five team in a ton of different statistical categories from total rebounds, to field goals made, and points scored.

The defense was incredibly stingy, as they finished third in the league, allowing only 92.9 points per game. Jordan and Pippen could score on anybody, and Rodman was a force down low. This would be a heavyweight fight, but this might be the series the Warriors would have the best shot at winning handily. Teams shot only 35% from three-point range against this Bulls team, but Durant, Curry, and Thompson would give the Bulls defense a run for their money.

Floridians Celebrated July 4th The Only Way They Know How: Blowing Off Fingers

Three years ago yesterday, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre Paul — fresh off of a franchise tag — essentially blew up his hand in a fireworks incident.

On July 4, 2018, in an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of fireworks, Pierre Paul posted a throwback photo of his mangled fist and it honestly may be the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. So disgusting, in fact, that I’m not even going to link it here. If you want to see it, go search for it yourself.

Anyway, Pierre Paul is a Floridian — he was born in Florida, went to the University of South Florida, and he blew off his hand in Florida — so it got me thinking: how did Floridians fare this Fourth of July?

The answer: some fingers were definitely been lost.

On Tuesday, July 3, (because they just couldn’t wait until the 4th), Ryan Dobard, a Brevard County man,  blew off his fingers and eyebrows.

“We thought he was playing at first, but his hand was just demolished.I just seen blood just shoot up in the air. It was crazy, right up on the balcony up there,” a friend told ClickOrlando.

Then on July 4th, a Lauderhill man had to have part of his hand amputated due to a fireworks mishap. But it doesn’t stop there, as a fireworks operator in Surfside was “burned in the chest and face” due to fireworks. Finally, two more people were injured in Pompano Beach — one of which lost a finger.

And of course, because it’s Florida, none of this would be possible if it weren’t for their ass-backward fireworks laws: in Florida, while you can buy fireworks, they are not technically legal. Uhhhh … huh?

via Florida Politics:

The Tampa Tribune in 2014 called fireworks sales in Florida an “institutionalized charade,” leading one lawmaker to call for “more freedom (and) less fraud.”

Retail sales are allowed only because of a 62-year-old loophole in the law, the only known one of its kind in the country. That allows “fireworks … to be used solely and exclusively in frightening birds from agricultural works and fish hatcheries.”

Indeed, anyone who’s bought fireworks from a roadside tent over the years may remember signing a form acknowledging the buyer falls under an agricultural, fisheries or other exemption.

For the record, fireworks can also be used for “signal purposes or illumination” of a railroad or quarry, “for signal or ceremonial purposes in athletics or sports, or for use by military organizations.”

Enforcement is up to local police and fire agencies, and case law says fireworks vendors aren’t responsible for verifying that buyers actually intend to chase off egrets or light up a track meet.

Florida, I’ll never understand you, but I’ll always love you.

The 10 Unknown Superheroes Of The DC Universe

0
0

Since it’s incorporation in 1934, DC Comics has been responsible for the creation of thousands of characters from as many universes, galaxies, planets, dimensions, timelines… I could go on. Superheroes such as the Watchmen and Swamp Thing debuted in a sub-sect of DC Comics entitled Vertigo, while the Justice League, the Green Lantern Corps, etc., make up the rest (and the bulk) of the DC Universe.

The Justice League in its formative years began with 8 members (Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawk-Girl, Martian Manhunter and the Flash, with Batman and Aquaman as part-time members), and later expanded to include nearly 60 more superheroes from across the globe (such as the sibling team of Hawk and Dove and the Marvel family, though they were members only briefly). The DC Universe has also recently been merged with another creation of DC Comics called the Wildstorm Universe, introducing to the fray such characters as Grifter, the WildC.A.T.s and many others.

Amidst the never-ending array of universes and stories, it’s easy to miss out on a few (hundred) names here and there. So to fill in a few of those gaps, here are a few of the some-what lesser-known heroes of DC Comics.

1. Red Tornado

Instagram Photo

He’s not exactly lesser-known, but he’s not one of the Super Seven either. Red Tornado is an android created by the mad scientist T.O Morrow, Thomas Oscar Morrow, who used would use technology from the future to help create his inventions. According to the anthology followed in the animated series Young Justice (2010-present), he was created by Morrow following two failed experiments to create human-like androids to infiltrate the Justice League, Red Inferno, and Red Torpedo, who could control the elements fire and water respectively.

Red Tornado maintained the power to channel wind, and in the comics, is an android inhabited by the air elemental known as Ulthoon, a sentient elemental that has made its way across the universe, in the forms of both good and evil personalities, such as the Tornado Champion, and the Tornado Tyrant. I’m sure you can guess which is which. Red Tornado broke away from his original programming to spy on the Justice League and aid in its destruction and eventually became amongst their most powerful (and heroic) members, in a never-ending quest to understand humanity.

Red Tornado takes up residence in the little town of Happy Harbour and one day settles down with a family of his own. But his role in the Justice League is unforgettable, having sacrificed himself on multiple occasions to bring down the forces of evil. Red Tornado has made appearances in Infinite Crisis (2005), Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) and numerous issues of Justice League, as well as in the animated series Young Justice (2010-present), Batman: The Brave and The Bold (2008-2011), and Justice League Unlimited (2004-2006).

2. Voodoo

Instagram Photo

Meet Priscilla Kitaen, of the Wildstorm Universe. An exotic dancer from… well, a little bit of everywhere, who found herself gifted with something called “The Sight”, that allowed her to see people being possessed by creatures of the darkness known as Daemonites, and exorcise them. Though her career (in both fields) began in New York, while being hunted by the Daemonites, she was rescued by the WildC.A.T.S and spent a brief period as a member of the team before a coma ended her short-lived jaunt as a super-hero.

Following a series of other adventures into her heritage on the planet Khera, this sexy stripper returned to a life of dancing in New Orleans, where she discovered further powers possessed by her, to channel the spirit of Erzulie, the goddess of loa (love and women). As detailed in the 4 issue limited series of 1997, written by Alan Moore, her newfound powers granted her the ability to create worship in those around her with her dance, should she so choose, and battle the strongest of Voodoo forces. All this as a novice. Inspired by the experience, Priscilla chose to become an apprentice to a mambo in the art of Voodoo, before returning to super-heroine with the WildC.A.T.S and Team 7.

3. Orion

Instagram Photo

Following the recently release of the Justice League (2017) movie, most people are aware of the character Darkseid, an almost omnipotent God from the planet Apocalypse, where he rules with an iron fist, drenching the land in fire pits and forcing his subjects to help him in his eternal quest for the Anti-Life Equation. The Planet Apocalypse was created alongside another planet, named New Genesis, a land of beauty, peace, and sustenance ruled by compassionate but powerful Highfather. Darkseid, Highfather and the other superpowered citizens of these worlds are together known as the New Gods.

New Genesis and Apocalypse were at war for hundreds of years, until finally a truce was arrived at by which the sons of Darkseid and Highfather would be traded, as a treatise of peace between the two planets. So it became that Scot Free, A.K.A Mister Miracle would be raised on Apocalypse by Darkseid, and Orion, son of Darkseid was raised on New Genesis by Highfather. In the alternate universe of the animated movie Justice League: Gods and Monsters (2015), the granddaughter of Highfather is betrothed to Orion in a similar attempt at peace between the two worlds.

As a member of the Gods of New Genesis, Orion grew up with a sense of justice and freedom, often battling his father and the forces of Apocalypse who only wish to subjugate. Though he is a noble warrior, he still maintains much of his father’s rage and impatience. But every step of the way he shows us that in his case nurture wins out over nature. He currently stands as the leader of the armed forces of New Genesis.

4. Majestros

Instagram Photo

Another creation of the Wildstorm universe, Majestros, alias Mister Majestic, was once a Kherubim Warlord, born and raised on the planet Khera, where he would later also have two children, presumably with different women. Some supers tend to play it fast and loose. During a war between the Kherubims and Daemonites (enter Voodoo), Majestros found himself trapped on Earth for centuries, endlessly caught in the battle for justice and even forming a team to fight alongside during World War II and being recruited by the Government during the Cold War. He then served for many years as the team leader of the WildC.A.T.S.

His brain having been poisoned by a villain, he begins to lead them down a violent path, dispensing cruel punishment to both human and superhuman criminals alike. He eventually quits the team and searches for purpose elsewhere, fighting rebellions on his home planet and even making a few jaunts into the DC Universe (before the integration). Majestros, as an immortal being, was amongst the few characters that lived to see the end of all life in the universe in the Wildstorm Spotlight story entitled “The Big Chill” (1997).

5. The Atom

Instagram Photo

Proof that the biggest of heroes can come in the smallest packages, Ray Palmer was a scientist, a well-renowned physicist who dabbled in research into the uses of nanotechnology. During the course of his research, Dr. Palmer discovered a meteor that was later determined to be a fragment of white dwarf star material that had fallen to earth and theorized that the power of the meteor could be channeled through a lens and focused to shrink objects. But when he attempted to turn theory to reality, the device rendered all shrunken objects unstable, causing them to explode.

A disappointed Ray Palmer decided to work off the stress and joined a group of friends on a spelunking trip. But a cave-in resulted in the group being trapped and in an instant of desperation, Ray Palmer used the shrink on himself to help his friends escape. Much to his surprise, he didn’t explode and he was able to return to his normal size. He eventually discovered that he possessed a “metagene”, something in his genetic make-up that prevented his atoms from becoming unstable. Armed with his newly synthesized shrink ray,

Ray Palmer used his ability to alter his size and weight, and superior intellect to battle injustice and became the hero known as The Atom, the Mighty Mite of Ivy Town. In his long-standing career with the Justice League, this tiny titan has fought alongside many heroes, including the Big Three (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman), the Hawks from Thanagar, Flash, Aquaman etc, with his adventures taking him all across the galaxy (and the DC Animated Universe).

6. Vigilante

Instagram Photo

The Dark Knight may be our favorite vigilante, but he’s not the only one. In the DC Universe, two people have donned a mask and taken the name Vigilante, though they share nothing else in common besides the name. The original Vigilante, appearing first in 1941, was named Greg Sanders and was the gun-slinging, fast-talking crime-fighter of the Old West. In keeping with the older, non-PC days, he also had a side-kick named Stuff, the Chinatown Kid. This version of Vigilante also makes multiple appearances (minus the sidekick, of course) in the animated series Justice League Unlimited (2004-2006) and Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2008-2011).

4 decades later, a new Vigilante was created for the comics (no DCAU appearances as yet), a much darker anti-hero of sorts. His story when a nice guy (relatively), a lawyer named Adrian Chase, who spent many years using the legal system to put bad guys away, watched his family get murdered and the killers go free. Shattered by the tragic loss, he reinvented himself as the spandex-clad masked anti-hero Vigilante, who dispensed justice to criminals with what he believed was a justified brutality that became legendary and inspired others in his time to take up the costume but proceed as judge, jury, and executioner.

After years of fighting the worst kind of criminals, Chase struggled with his internal conflict to do good and his decision to take the law into his own hands. He eventually met his own sad end, and the mantle was taken up by many others after him.

7. Kamandi

Instagram Photo

The story of Kamandi takes place on a parallel universe, centuries into the future. Or the past depending on the story. Kamandi is the grandson of a man named Buddy Blank, a janitor who once worked for the Global Peace agency that was turned by them into a super-powered force called the One Man Army Corps, or O.M.A.C. In a post-apocalyptic world where genetic mutations and evolution has caused animals to develop human-like traits, walking upright and speaking languages. Over the decades, these Animal-Men would come to take over the planet for themselves and humans, now left without structure or social culture, began to devolve into a lesser species with minimal intelligence and capabilities. Buddy Blank, having been witness to the rise of the kingdoms of the Animal-Men (Tiger-men, Wolf-men, etc) and their enslavement of humans, he raised his grandson in hiding and taught him what he could about Earth before the disaster, when humans were once a dominant life form. Named after the bunker he was born in (Command-D), Kamandi, also known as the Last Boy on Earth, was inspired by the lessons taught by his grandfather about humans and began a quest to find more people like him and free as many human slaves as possible along the way aided by his friends, a hyper-intelligent dog-man named Doctor Canus, and a few other humans.

8. The Creeper

Despite the resemblance to Joker in his mannerisms (and all-out insanity), the Creeper is on the right side of the law. Created by the injection of an experimental nano cell therapy into his bloodstream by Dr Vincent Yatz, the Creeper was granted the power of rapid healing, enhanced reflexes and many other gifts, including a pain-inducing laugh, that can literally cause his victims to suffer immense pain on hearing it. His alternate personality is Jack Ryder, a reporter for the Gotham City TV Station, known for his fiery opinions, constant quests for the truth and antagonizing guests on his show to make a point. Though the story of the origin of his powers is slightly different in the DCAU, his personality (both of them, that is), remains the same. Ryder (the Lois Lane of Gotham by day) can at will transform into the Creeper, or as he calls himself in Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995), “Yellow-skinned Wacky Man”. Draped in a bright red feather boa (and very little else), the Creeper uses his powers and insanity to fight the good fight with Batman in Gotham City and even assisted the Justice League in many a battle.

9. The Question

Instagram Photo

A faceless detective by night and investigative reporter by day, Vic Sage has been a member of the Justice League, the Black Lantern Corps and even the L.A.W (Living Assault Weapons – not quite the law we are used to, but desperate times).  Driven by a greater knowledge and thirst for a deeper meaning to the universe, and armed with martial arts skills taught to him by experts such as Lady Shiva, the Question is the world’s greatest conspiracy theorist, connecting dots where you wouldn’t believe there were any and discovering the 32nd Baskin & Robbins flavor (Justice League Unlimited (2004-2006) for the win!). Hailing from the same city as Ted Kord, the hero that eventually would come to take the mantle of the Blue Beetle, Sage keeps Hub City safe from the underground crimes, donning a mask that completely hides his face (and disguises his hair color) using an experimental material known as pseudoderm. But he does often take time off to help the Justice League with their many battles, facing off with such villains as Darkseid and Lex Luthor, and even had a large role in the protection of Gotham City. He eventually trained and was replaced by Renee Montoya, a detective in the Gotham City Police Department.

10. Elongated Man

Instagram Photo

Ralph Dibny was a normal kid from Nebraska, constantly lost in dreams of fortune and fame. During his days as a junior detective, one day at a carnival, he found himself fascinated by the antics of a group of contortionists who performed there as a side attraction and on further investigation, determined that the source of their power was a rare fruit. Distilling the fruit into its concentrate form, Dibny found a way to access the true potential of the same, and somehow avoid the poisonous effects of the same and became the Elongated Man, which game him the power of absolute dexterity and shapeshifting. Think Mr. Fantastic meets Mystique. The same fruit was eventually used to create the chemical substance the Question would use for his mask. Ralph then moved to Central City, where he would eventually become good friends with Barry Allen, the Flash, and hone in his detective skills, despite a lack of formal training. During the course of his Central City adventures, Ralph met Sue Dearbon, and with a whirlwind romance, they were soon married. Ralph and Sue Dibny would go on to have many adventures together, during some of the greatest years of the Justice League, refusing to stay parted even by death. Ralph Dibny has been a member of the Justice League, the Justice League International and the Justice League Europe, amongst others, and has made notable appearances in the comic series Identity Crisis (2004-2005), and the animated series Justice League Unlimited (2004-2006) and Batman: the Brave and the Bold (2008-2011).

MSNBC

Veteran broadcaster and television/radio host Ed Shultz has died at the age of 64 of natural causes.

Schultz, a former political commentator, TV & radio host, and former sports broadcaster, most recently hosted a daily primetime weekday show on RT America.

During his career, Schultz hosted the nationally syndicated “Ed Schultz News and Commentary” podcast from 2015 until the time of his death. In addition, he hosted a nightly television show, News with Ed Schultz, since 2016.

Schultz was the host of both The Ed Show, which was a weekday news talk program on MSNBC, and The Ed Schultz Show, a talk radio show that was nationally syndicated by Dial Global.

via The Hill:

Schultz started his career in Fargo before eventually working as a commentator and host at MSNBC. Fans praised his focus on middle-class issues on his TV show “The Ed Show,” which was broadcast weekday afternoons.

Schultz’s MSNBC show was canceled in 2015, and in January 2016 he joined RT America, the English-language Russian news channel.

The Kremlin-backed RT is frequently criticized as state propaganda and was forced to register as a “foreign agent” by the Justice Department last year. But Schultz pushed back against that characterization.

“RT completes the picture of the events in the U.S. and around the globe, giving viewers access to a range of stories, voices and opinions, and a real opportunity to speak their minds,” Schultz said upon his hiring.

UFC

UFC 226 has taken a major hit. Max Holloway, the promotion’s featherweight champion, was forced to withdraw from the co-main event title defense due to concussion-like symptoms Holloway’s team confirmed the news on his social media accounts. As a result, his opponent, Brian Ortega, has also been scrapped from the event.

The news was first confirmed by ESPN.com.

After learning the news, MMAjunkie reached out to Holloway’s camp and received the following information.

“Max’s team and UFC staff noticed Max was not normal since late last week. This became obvious to many watching his interviews and public appearances the past few days.

“He was showing concussion-like symptoms before he even started his weight cut and was rushed to the ER on Monday where they admitted him overnight. Initial scans seemed okay, and he was released Tuesday afternoon, but symptoms still continued.

“Max fought with his team to continue with the fight. He showed some improvement over the next day but was still showing obvious symptoms. After open workouts, he crashed and was very hard to wake up. When he did, he had flashing vision and slurred speech.

Go go Power Rangers! (Ok, sorry just had to get that out there.)

Naomi Scott is an English actress and singer, who is perhaps best known for starring in the 2017 Power Rangers movie as the Pink Ranger herself, Kimberly Hart. She is also known for starring in the short-lived Fox series Terra Nova and has also been cast to play Jasmine in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin.

Scott was born on May 6th, 1993, in London, England. She is the daughter of a Ugandan-born Gujarati Indian mother and an English father. Both of her parents are pastors based in London and partially due to this upbringing, Scott has participated in missionary work on behalf of her church.

She began her singing career by participating in her church’s choir and youth band, where caught the bug performing bug. She attended the Davenant Foundation School, regularly participating in its musical theater productions. She was discovered by Kéllé Bryan, a British pop singer who proceeded to sign her as a client.

From there, Scott’s career truly began to take off and she was cast in the Disney Channel UK original series Life Bites and also the Disney Channel movie Lemonade Mouth. She moved on to the Fox original series Terra Nova which did not catch on and was canceled following its first season.

In 2014, Scott released her debut EP, Invisible Division, which she followed up with 2016’s Promises.

Scott was cast in Ridley Scott’s The Martian but her scenes in the film ended up being cut for time. They can still be viewed in the extended cut of the movie. In October of 2015, Scott got her biggest casting yet, playing the Pink Ranger in the reboot of Power Rangers. She was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for her performance, and it also led to her being cast in the Jasmine role for the live action version of Aladdin, scheduled which will be released in 2019.

We can’t wait to see where she goes from here, but if the past few years are any indication, she’s got a very bright future ahead of her.
