Florida Friday: All Of This Week’s Headlines From America’s Most Interesting State-6/22

Oh, Florida — like our wives and girlfriends, we can’t live with you, but we certainly couldn’t live without you. You are like the Drunk Uncle in the family that is the United States of America: you mean well & have a good heart, but show up to the party already hammered and then tell Cousin Derek to go f*ck himself before you fall face first through the all-glass living room coffee table. You’re a wildcard, but you’re our wildcard, and we love ya for it.

For some reason, though, more than any other state in the union, Florida has an uncanny knack of churning out the most preposterous headlines you’ve ever heard of.

“Homeless Man Engages in Sword Fight with Alligator”

“Pink-Haired Couple Rob Bank Armed Only with String Cheese”

“Party Clown Arrested for Smoking Crack in Front of Children”

Are these real stories? Did I just make these headlines up? Who knows. I guess you’ll have to Google it. Either way, the point is they sound real and that’s because in Florida, literally, anything is possible, even the most bizarre.

Okay, I’ll admit, the headlines above you are fake, but the ones below are entirely real, and that’s what makes Florida so Florida: you cannot tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not because it all sounds so wildly ridiculous.

“Teen Bites the Head Off Live Chicken”

“Elementary School Teacher Arrested For Selling Marijuana”

“Police Searching For Cross-Dresser Who Keeps Leaving Underwear On Random Cars”

“Man Causes $100K in Damage at Local Walmart, Blames ‘Hookah Smoking Caterpillar'”

“Teacher Placed on Leave For Drowning Racoons in Class”

“Woman Poses as Federal Agent to Score Free Chick-Fil-A”

“This Chainsaw Wielding Nun is the Hero Florida Deserves Right Now”

“Man Whips Out Samurai Sword During Road Rage Incident”

“Teacher Suspended For Allowing Students to Hook Up in Class”

Needless to say, you get our point: Florida is a mad, mad place.

So with that in mind, we’ve decided to do a weekly round-up of all the headlines from America’s Bastard Son of a State … the only and only Florida.

19-Year-Old Cedella Roman Accidentally Jogs Across Border, Detained For 2 Weeks

Cedella Roman/Facebook

Cedella Roman was enjoying a run on the beach near White Rock, British Columbia, Canada when it quickly turned into a nightmare. The 19-year-old was running along the beach in late-May when she decided to take a photo of the scenery. It was then that she saw U.S. border patrol officers approaching her because she had unknowingly crossed the U.S. border.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers told Roman, who is a French citizen and was without any ID or travel permit when she was jogging, that she had entered the country illegally.

Roman had been visiting her mother in British Columbia to work on her English when the incident occurred, according to a CBC report.

At first, Roman didn’t realize the severity of what was happening, but she was eventually transported to the Tacoma Northwest Detention Center where she was detained for two weeks.

“They put me in the caged vehicles and brought me into their facility,” she said in the report. “They asked me to remove all my personal belongings with my jewelry, they searched me everywhere. Then I understood it was getting very serious, and I started to cry a bit.”

— Eva Uguen-Csenge (@evacsenge) June 22, 2018

Roman’s mother eventually contacted her daughter and made the trip to the detention center, which is run by the Department of Homeland Security, to provide the appropriate documents. She then had to take the documents back to Immigration Canada where they determined Roman was eligible to be released.

Roman was released on June 6.

The good news is that Roman was reunited with her family. The unfortunate part is an incident like this can lead to some lasting trauma, but a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said authorities handled the situation appropriately. Roman’s family is unsure whether she will ever be allowed back in the United States.

Hanna Gabriels is one of the top women’s boxers in the world. The 25-year-old Costa Rican standout currently holds the WBO female light-middleweight championship and WBA female light-middleweight championship. While she is already accomplished, Gabriels is set to enter the most high-profile bout of her career against two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields in Detroit on Friday, June 22.

The two women are competing for the vacant IBF and WBA Women’s Middleweight World Championships.

“I’ve never feared anyone. Words don’t do anything. When I get in the ring I’m going to be a beast,” Gabriels said following the official weigh-ins. “I’m OK with whatever comes, win or loss. I’m a champion and that’s my mentality in the ring. We’re going for the victory, and I’m appreciating everything that’s happening preparing for this fight.”

Shields is known for her heavy hands, but that hasn’t taken away from Gabriels’ confidence.

“We need to step up to the plate and make sure our game plan is on point and we give the fans what they want to see, which is a great fight. You have to overcome a lot and sacrifice to get to this point, and my team has done that,” Gabriels said.

“I don’t underestimate her power. But boxing isn’t just about power, there’s so much more. You can be powerful, but can you land the punch? Can it be precise? There are so many things going on in the ring that you have to worry about.”

Hanley Ramirez Reportedly ‘Being Eyed’ In State & Federal Investigation

NBC Sports Boston

Former Boston Red Sox infielder Hanley Ramirez could soon be facing some legal issues, according to reports and rumors that are making the rounds in Boston sports media circles. While details are vague, it appears that some big news surrounding the 34-year-old could soon be made public.

According to Michele McPhee of ABC News, Ramirez is “being eyed in connection with an ongoing federal and state investigation.”

No further details have been made available at this time.

#HanleyRamirez, former @RedSox infielder, has some.. well, issues. Being eyed in connection with an ongoing federal and state investigation. Stay tuned.

— Michele McPhee (@MicheleMcPhee) June 22, 2018

Other members of the Boston media have also hinted that there is some serious news close to dropping.

Some crazy news about to break. Soon.

— James Stewart (@IAmJamesStewart) June 22, 2018

Ramirez’s agent, Adam Katz, denied any knowledge of an investigation when speaking with FOX Sports.

“Hanley has no knowledge of any of the allegations contained in this media report and he is not aware of any investigation,” Katz told Ken Rosenthal.

The Boston Red Sox have also denied that any potential investigation led to the decision to release Ramirez earlier this month.

From Alex Speier of the Boston Globe:

Red Sox VP of media relations Kevin Gregg says that the Red Sox are unaware of any investigation involving Hanley Ramirez. Another ML source familiar with the team’s thinking seconded that, and reiterated that the decision to release him was “a baseball decision.”

Ramirez was born in the Dominican Republic and has been in the MLB since 2005.

Ramirez was released by the Red Sox on June 1 after being designated for assignment on May 25. He was batting .254 on the season and has yet to generate any interest from teams around the league since his release. The reported link to the ongoing federal and state investigation could be playing a major factor in why Ramirez remains a free agent.

This is a developing story. More information will be added as soon as it becomes available.

Vinnie Paul Cause Of Death: How Did Pantera & Damageplan Drummer Die?

$

0

Drummer Vinnie Paul, co-founder of metal band Pantera, has died at the age of 54. Paul’s representatives confirmed the news of his death on social media.

What happened?

On the official Facebook page for Pantera, the following message was given, highlighting that little information was available during the early release of the news:

“Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away. Paul is best known for his work as the drummer in the bands Pantera and Hellyeah. No further details are available at this time. The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time.”

According to Billboard, Paul, whose birth name is Vincent Paul Abbott, formed Pantera in 1981 with his brother, Dimebag Darrell. Over the years, the group earned four Grammy nominations and charted nine albums on the Billboard 200. Following Pantera’s demise, the Abbott brothers formed Damageplan in 2003; the new band was quickly impacted by an incident in 2004, in which Paul’s brother was shot and killed onstage during a concert in Columbus, Ohio. Since 2006, Paul was also the drummer for heavy metal band Hellyeah.

According to Online Drummer, Paul was a native of Texas, which he connected to his passion for music in the following statement:

“The Texas thing is part of it, growing up on a healthy dose of ZZ Top and Stevie Ray Vaughan, but I also was a metal-head from day one. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Van Halen, all my favorite bands had really great grooves to their music.”

What is Vinnie Paul’s official cause of death?

At this time, Vinnie Paul’s official cause of death does not appear to have been released to the public. In the Facebook post confirming his death, as mentioned above, it was said that few details were available at the time the news came to light and that Paul’s family wanted privacy at this time.

As this story is developing, more information will be updated as made available.

5 University Of Arizona Fraternities Investigated For Code Of Conduct Violations

The University of Arizona is investigating five fraternities on campus for potential code of conduct violations. Kendal Washington White, the dean of students, announced the five fraternities are under investigation while currently facing interim disciplinary action.

The fraternities in question are Alpha Epsilon Pi, Kappa Sigma, Alpha Kappa Lambda, Theta Delta Chi, and Beta Theta Pi.

The impacted fraternities are banned from hosting, attending, participating or sponsoring any organized activities until their cases are settled. They are also prohibited from using University of Arizona facilities.

From the Arizona Daily Star:

Reported violations for the various houses in 2018 include on- and off-campus alcohol rules; endangering, threatening or causing physical harm to students; failure to comply with UA officials and interfering or disrupting with UA activities.

Some of the fraternities are also dealing with outstanding sanctions from violations reported in 2017, according to the UA’s website.

Alpha Epsilon Pi and Kappa Sigma have been placed on interim loss of recognition status. Alpha Kappa Lambda and Theta Delta Chi have been placed on a full activities suspension, and Beta Theta Pi faces the same punishment while also being banned from contacting new members.

It is not the first time that any of the fraternities have faced sanctions for violations from the university. A number of the sanctions stem from “off-campus alcohol rules; endangering, threatening or causing physical harm to students; failure to comply with UA officials and interfering or disrupting with UA activities.”

Arizona has cracked down on fraternity violations in recent years, including shutting down eight frats on campus for various violations including hazing and alcohol use.

All of the fraternities that responded to the report claim they are working with the university to complete previous sanctions while also hoping the interim suspension will soon be lifted.

Top Netflix Executive Leaves Company After Using N-Word On Multiple Occasions

Jonathan Friedland has left Netflix after seven years with the company. According to a statement released by Friedland on social media, the top Netflix executive has left the company after it was revealed that he used racially charged comments in front of his colleagues on multiple occasions.

According to the claims, Friedland, who was the company’s Chief Communications Officer, reportedly used the N-word.

“Leaders have to be beyond reproach in the example we set and unfortunately I fell short of that standard when I was insensitive in speaking to my team about words that offend in comedy,” Friedland wrote in a series of tweets.

“I feel awful about the distress this lapse caused to people at a company I love and where I want everyone to feel included and appreciated.”

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced the decision to employees in a memo obtained by Variety.

“The use of the phrase ‘N-word’ was created as a euphemism, and the norm, with the intention of providing an acceptable replacement and moving people away from using the specific word,” Hastings explained. “Many of us have worked closely with Jonathan for a long time, and have mixed emotions. Unfortunately, his lack of judgment in this area was too big for him to remain.”

The incidents reportedly came during a staff meeting about “sensitive words” with the public relations staff at Netflix. Another incident came in front of two African-American employees who were part of Netflix’s human resources department.

Netflix has yet to officially address the situation in public.

The full memo regarding Friedland’s departure from the company be read below.

— Hollywood Reporter (@THR) June 22, 2018

I’ve made a decision to let go of Jonathan Friedland.  Jonathan contributed greatly in many areas, but his descriptive use of the N-word on at least two occasions at work showed unacceptably low racial awareness and sensitivity, and is not in line with our values as a company.

The first incident was several months ago in a PR meeting about sensitive words.  Several people afterwards told him how inappropriate and hurtful his use of the N-word was, and Jonathan apologised to those that had been in the meeting.  We hoped this was an awful anomaly never to be repeated.

Three months later he spoke to a meeting of our Black Employees @ Netflix group and did not bring it up, which was understood by many in the meeting to mean he didn’t care and didn’t accept accountability for his words.

The second incident, which I only heard about this week, was a few days after the first incident; this time Jonathan said the N-word again to two of our Black employees in HR who were trying to help him deal with the original offense.  The second incident confirmed a deep lack of understanding, and convinced me to let Jonathan go now.

As I reflect on this, at this first incident, I should have done more to use it as a learning moment for everyone at Netflix about how painful and ugly that word is, and that it should not be used. I realize that my privilege has made me intellectualize or otherwise minimize race issues like this. I need to set a better example by learning and listening more so I can be the leader we need.

Depending on where you live or grew up in the world, understanding and sensitivities around the history and use of the N-word can vary. Debate on the use of the word is active around the world (example) as the use of it in popular media like music and film have created some confusion as to whether or not there is ever a time when the use of the N-word is acceptable. For non-Black people, the word should not be spoken as there is almost no context in which it is appropriate or constructive (even when singing a song or reading a script). There is not a way to neutralize the emotion and history behind the word in any context. The use of the phrase “N-word” was created as a euphemism, and the norm, with the intention of providing an acceptable replacement and moving people away from using the specific word. When a person violates this norm, it creates resentment, intense frustration, and great offense for many.  Our show Dear White People covers some of this ground.

Going forward, we are going to find ways to educate and help our employees broadly understand the many difficult ways that race, nationality, gender identity and privilege play out in society and our organization. We seek to be great at inclusion, across many dimensions, and these incidents show we are uneven at best. We have already started to engage outside experts to help us learn faster.

Jonathan has been a great contributor and he built a diverse global team creating awareness for Netflix, strengthening our reputation around the world, and helping make us into the successful company we are today. Many of us have worked closely with Jonathan for a long time, and have mixed emotions. Unfortunately, his lack of judgment in this area was too big for him to remain.  We care deeply about our employees feeling safe and supported at Netflix.

Much of this information will be in the press shortly.  But any detail not in the press is confidential to employees.

If you are lucky enough to live near a beach or you are on vacation, you have to go surfing. For all the first-timers, it may take awhile before you get to stand up on a board and ride a wave. But, it’s all about the experience. You may feel sore the next day, but you had fun. And for the experts, you already know how much fun it is to feel the fresh sea breeze when standing on your board.

Water Skiing

Instagram Photo

When you head to the lake, you will always catch one or two water skiers coasting along the water. These guys make it look so easy as they glide on the crystal blue water. But, the hard part is getting up on the ski. If you do try water skiing, get prepared because you are going to be doing a lot of face planting. Laughter usually helps with the pain that is on your face. But, once you have successfully gotten up, it’s hard to stop.

Paddle Boarding

For those of you who like some alone time or a peaceful place to relax, try paddle boarding. Standing on the board does take a lot of balance, but that’s part of the fun with paddle boarding, especially when you are around friends and family. Who doesn’t want to see their uncle fall in the water? And not only is paddle boarding fun for the whole family but it’s also an excellent workout that works the entire body.

Now, this should be on everyone’s bucket list. Jet skiing can bring out the kid in all of us who want to go fast. Feeling that water sprayed against your face and the waves lift you up in the air, you can feel like you’re flying. It’s like stepping on a magic carpet that looks like a boat. Tubing is a must do for every summer. It’s one of the most popular and most fun water sports in the world. Being whipped around by a boat, crashing into waves, and flying in the air is a huge adrenaline rush. It may hurt landing face first in the water, but you always have that energy to get back on the tube and do it again. And bring on the big waves, the bigger, the better. It’s also fun to compete with friends to see who can hang on the longest.

Katie Arrington, a Republican congressional candidate in South Carolina, was seriously injured in a deadly wrong-way car crash Friday night. During initial reports of the story, she was believed to be in serious condition while in the hospital.

What happened?

According to  WSOC, Arrington was traveling in the passenger seat with a friend during the time of the incident; the crash occurred when another driver traveling in the wrong direction hit their car. According to Arrington’s representatives, she endured a broken back and ribs and is expected to stay in the hospital for the next two weeks.

According to officials, the driver of Arrington’s car was, who was identified as Jacqueline Goff of Mandeville, also endured serious injuries during the crash. The driver of the other car was killed, believed to have died at the scene of the incident, and has not yet been publicly identified.

President Trump offered his condolences on social media

On his official Twitter account, President Donald Trump offered the following statement in response to the incident:

“My thoughts and prayers are with Representative Katie Arrington of South Carolina, including all of those involved in last nights car accident, and their families.”

According to The Daily Beast, Trump had been involved with Arrington’s political campaigns at least once in the past; her recent incumbent Sanford in South Carolina’s GOP primaries was partially attributed to an endorsement from Trump on social media. Hours before the polls closed, Trump wrote the following in the following Twitter post:

“Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA. He is MIA and nothing but trouble. He is better off in Argentina. I fully endorse Katie Arrington for Congress in SC, a state I love. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes. VOTE Katie!”

Antoine Griezmann Net Worth 2018: How Much Is Griezmann Worth Now?

$

Antoine Griezmann is a forward for Atletico Madrid and the French National Team. The Frenchman has spent most of his career making a name for himself in La Liga, garnering international attention for his abilities. This year Griezman rejected an offer from Barcelona to stay with Atletico until 2023. Now that Griezmann is a commodity how much is the French forward worth?

Antoine Griezmann Net Worth: $19 Million

Reports have Griezmann hovering around $20 Million, give or take. That’s a lot of cash for a guy who’s only 27! But how did Griezmann gain his fortune?

1991-2009

Instagram Photo

Antoine Griezmann was born in Macon, France to Alain and Isabelle Griezmann. His mother was of Portuguese descent and he would often spend holidays in Portugal. He started his career as a child with hometown club UF Macon. Often looked over due to his size he was finally noticed by Spanish side Real Sociedad. In 2005 Griezmann moved to Spain and joined Real Sociedad’s youth academy. He would spend the next four years with their youth side before making his senior club debut in 2009.

2009-2014

Instagram Photo

Griezmann would make his senior club debut in September 2009 in the Copa del Rey against Ray Vellacano. Griezemann would stay a mainstay on the squad and sign a contract in 2010 to keep him with Real Sociedad until 2015. The club’s success in the 2009-2010 season would earn them a place back in La Liga in 2010. In the 2012-2013 season, Griezmann would help Real Sociedad qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2003.

Being out of the public eye in France Griezmann was initially overlooked for the French National team but received a call to play in France’s U-19 squad in February 2010 after his time with Real Sociedad on the bigger stage. He would be on the squad that would win the 2010 U-19 UEFA Championships which means the team qualified for the 2011 U-20 World Cup. Griezmann would continue making his way up the youth sides but found himself in hot water in 2012, being suspended along with a few other players due to disciplinary reasons. This left Griezmann’s future with the French National team in question as he considered switching allegiances to Portugal.

2014-Present

Instagram Photo

In July 2014 Real Sociedad agreed on terms to move Griezmann to Atletico Madrid. He made his debut with the team in the 2014 Supercopa de Espana. Griezmann would solidify himself as a major player on the national scene with Atletico Madrid. Domestically Atletico would win the 2015 Spanish Super Cup while internationally they would reach the 2016 Champions League Finals which they would lose to Real Madrid and win the 2018 Europa League Final. His success would also earn him a nomination for the 2016 Ballon d’Or.

Griezmann would smooth things over with the FFF and find his way to the French senior national team in 2014, making the 2014 World Cup squad. He would go on to also make the 2016 Euro squad who would be playing in their home country. Griezmann and the home squad would make the finals but eventually, lose to Portugal. Even though his team would not be able to finish with a win Greizmann would go on to win the tournaments Golden Boot and Top Player awards.

Greizmann will have another chance to add to his hardware this year in Russia as part of the French National Team at the 2018 World Cup. The team is one of the more favored squads but anything can happen at the World Cup!
