College Bar of the Week: Olde Queens Tavern @ Rutgers University

College bars are as essential to the college experience as the student themselves. The cheap drinks, the shitty bathrooms, the bouncers who let people in the back door, the random hook-ups, the fights, the outrageously attractive bartenders, the 2 a.m. hail marys — all the things that make the college experience memorable likely happen

This week we feature Rutgers’ favorite watering hole, Olde Queens Tavern, an establishment at the New Brunswick-based school since 1933. Open early on game days and late on every other night of the week, Olde Queens Tavern (or simply “Queens” to Rutgers students) is the university’s premier bar.

The drink specials are the best deals on campus, bar none (see what I did there?). $3 Jack Daniels and Captain Morgan drinks on Monday and Wednesdays, $3 Svedka and Barcadi drinks on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and $1 Bud Lights all week, Queens is by far the best bang for your buck. It’s also one of the only establishments on campus to have *two* bars, meaning the service at Queens is also the best at Rutgers.

Queens can be known as the greek life bar which certainly rubs a couple of people the wrong way, but if you’re looking for attractive people, cheap drinks, and a damn good time, this is the place.

NBA Awards 2018: Nominees & Their Odds To Win

The finalists for the 2017-18 NBA Awards have officially been announced, and all winners will be revealed on Monday, June 25. Most of the winning narratives were written long before the season’s end, but all candidates have performed brilliantly and are worth consideration. Let’s review the nominees and figure out who’s got their trophy locked up, while pairing some completely made-up winning odds with each performer.

Most Valuable Player

Instagram Photo

James Harden is going to win. We already know this. It may not be a unanimous vote, but the Beard balled out from opening tip in October with vengeance on his mind (he was the first runner-up to both Steph Curry in 2015 and Russell Westbrook in 2017). In 2017-18, Harden led the league in scoring (30.4 PPG) and was third in assists (8.8 APG), while improving his field goal and three-point percentages and, most importantly, his team’s winning percentage. Harden’s play propelled the Rockets to a 65-17 record, and today they’re in healthy position to challenge the Golden State Warriors for the Western Conference title.

Odds to win: 93%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Unless he flames out in the playoffs, yes.

Instagram Photo

We take LeBron James for granted, and it’s going to come back to bite us. The greatest basketball player in the world hasn’t won a regular-season MVP award since 2013! What is wrong with us? LeBron put together one of the most remarkable regular seasons of his career in 2017-18: he played all 82 games, led the league in minutes, scored more points than James Harden, and had the best rebounds and assists averages of his 15-year career. Not to mention, the team around him was pretty terrible when not constantly in flux, yet he’s still managed to carry them to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Odds to win: 4%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Without question.

Instagram Photo

Anthony Davis and the oft-overlooked New Orleans Pelicans enjoyed one of the most memorable seasons in franchise history in 2017-18. The Brow and his partner in scoring and rebounding crime, DeMarcus Cousins, were blossoming together before the most rudely timed Achilles injury ever forced Davis to go it alone. The Brow, with the responsibility of an entire team on his shoulders, averaged 35 points and 13 rebounds in February, when he singlehandedly changed the Pels’ fate: AD ultimately led New Orleans to a 48-34 record and the No. 6 seed in the West in spite of preseason projections that had them missing the playoffs entirely.

Odds to win: 3%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Sure, if he never ends up winning an MVP. And you know that won’t happen.

Rookie of the Year

Instagram Photo

He may be a redshirt, but Ben Simmons is this year’s frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. Alongside Joel Embiid, Simmons transformed the Philadelphia 76ers from laughing stock of the league into (future) title contenders; the duo led the Sixers to 52 wins in 2017-18 and helped to secure the No. 3 seed in the East. Behind Magic-like averages of 15.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 8.2 assists, Simmons put together one of the most impressive and well-rounded rookie seasons since LeBron’s debut in 2003. Simmons also recorded a bizarre 12 triple-doubles in the regular season, good for second place in rookie history behind Oscar Robertson. The 21-year-old still has work to do (ahem, the jumpshot), but he’s already proven that he can be a future NBA MVP.

Odds to win: 60%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Yes.

Instagram Photo

Donovan Mitchell is the player no one quite accounted for. Picked 13th in the 2017 NBA Draft, Mitchell approached his rookie season without debilitating pressure–he wasn’t counted on to lead the Utah Jazz anywhere, let alone to the playoffs. So much for that. Mitchell and the Jazz quietly subverted expectations, turning a 17-24 start to 2017-18 into the No. 5 seed in the West. Mitchell led all rookies in scoring (20.5 PPG), broke Damian Lillard’s rookie record for threes made in a season (187), and joined an exclusive club–made up of elder statesmen Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, and David Robinson–when he became one of only five rookies in NBA history to lead a 45-win team in scoring. It’s mathematically unlikely that Mitchell and Simmons can be co-Rookies of the Year, so can we please change the rules?

Odds to win: 39%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Yes. Think of the self-serving merchandise he’s invested in!

Instagram Photo

If Rookie of the Year were measured by team success, this race would be even tighter. No. 3 pick Jayson Tatum has been playing like a seasoned vet, and it’s hard to stomach that he’s just 20 years old. As an integral contributor to the unbelievable 2017-18 Celtics, Tatum stepped up and did his part to help Boston to a 55-27 record and the No. 2 seed in the East. Tatum was one of the most consistent and dependable players on a team whose key players seemed to drop like houseflies, averaging 13.9 points on 47.5% shooting and 43.4% three-point shooting. The kid has emerged as a potential future member of the 50-40-90 club (82.6% from the free throw line) and no doubt an annual All-Star before long. Tatum shoulders great responsibility and has proven that he’s a team player and a winner; he won’t lose any sleep over coming in third.

Odds to win: 1%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Nah.

Defensive Player of the Year

Instagram Photo

For a second consecutive season, Utah’s Rudy Gobert is a Defensive Player of the Year finalist–and this must be his year. The Stifle Tower anchored the league’s second-best defense, and has proven time and again that he is the most frightening paint presence in the NBA (just look at what he did to Russell Westbrook and the Thunder in the first round of the playoffs). Donovan Mitchell deserves his due credit for offensively pushing the Jazz over the top in 2017-18, but they wouldn’t have accomplished nearly as much without Gobert on the other end. Much of Utah’s early-season losing coincided with his absence due to injury; with Gobert back in the lineup from late January on, Utah went an incredible 30-8 to close out the season. Gobert averaged 13.5 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks in 56 games, and topped competitors with a defensive real plus-minus of 5.14.

Odds to win: 80%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Yes.

Instagram Photo

In addition to his MVP nod, Anthony Davis nabbed a nomination for Defensive Player of the Year. AD wasn’t just an offensive monster in 2017-18 — he cemented his status as one of the best defenders and most threatening rim protectors in the league too. In one of the great defensive showdowns of the season, AD notched a career-high 10 blocks against Gobert and the Jazz back in March. Overall, Davis led the league in blocks with 2.7 per game, and was sixth in defensive real plus-minus (3.80). The Pelicans weren’t the greatest defensive team (they’d clock in at 13th in defensive rating) despite boasting Davis and two-way magician Jrue Holiday, and this will hurt the Brow’s chances at this particular accolade.

Odds to win: 10%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Not really.

Instagram Photo

Alongside Rookie of the Year hopeful Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid enjoyed a breakout season for the ages. In 63 regular-season games, Embiid put up 22.9 points, 11 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks, and a defensive real plus-minus of 3.60. The 76ers enjoyed the league’s third-best defensive rating (102) and fourth-best net rating (5.4) behind just the Rockets, Warriors, and Raptors. Among all players who notched at least 10 minutes in 60 games, Embiid ranked first in opponent field goal percentage. Embiid was voted an All-Star starter for the first time this year, and is well on his way to becoming the face of the NBA.

Odds to win: 10%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Nah. He’ll win this one within three years.

Sixth Man of the Year

Instagram Photo

Yes, Lou Williams should have been an All-Star this year. He knows that better than any of us, but hopefully he’ll feel ever so slightly vindicated when he collects Sixth Man accolades in June. Williams, who won the award in 2015 as a member of the Toronto Raptors (and inspired Drake’s “6 Man”), managed to lead the Los Angeles Clippers in scoring and assists from the bench. In fact, 2017-18 was the 31-year-old’s best scoring season to date, and he averaged 30 minutes per game for the first time in his career. Williams was by far the most productive reserve in the league; a unanimous win wouldn’t be surprising.

Odds to win: 96%

Would we regret not giving him this award? He’d make us regret it, that’s for sure.

Instagram Photo

Last year’s Sixth Man winner, Eric Gordon, netted 18 points per game off the bench for the Rockets this season. Gordon played 69 games in 2017-18, the most since his rookie campaign nine years ago, and put up his best scoring average since he was a starter for the Clippers in 2010-11. He actually ended up having to start 30 games due to injuries to Chris Paul and James Harden, and this (individual of Sweet Lou’s groundbreaking season) hurts his case most despite the Rockets’ enormous team success.

Odds to win: 2%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Not really.

Instagram Photo

Fred VanVleet led the Bench Mob that was so integral to the Toronto Raptors’ 59-win season, and this award nod is well-deserved. VanVleet, whose inspiring rise through the D-League culminated in this indispensable reserve role, averaged 8.6 points on 42.6% shooting and 41.4% three-point shooting in 76 games through 2017-18. VanVleet made just $1.3 million in his breakout year, and is set up for quite the payday in July when he hits restricted free agency. For an undrafted, undersized competitor like VanVleet, his story is awarding in itself.

Odds to win: 2%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Nope. He may have been playing hurt, but his playoffs were painful to watch.

Most Improved Player

Instagram Photo

Victor Oladipo is set up perfectly for the Most Improved accolade. After his third bounce around the league, the fifth-year player finally found a home in Indiana, where he led the Pacers to an inconceivable 48-win season and the No. 5 seed in the East. It wasn’t long before the once-lopsided Paul George trade lopped the other way in favor of the Pacers; head coach Nate McMillan let Oladipo be himself, and the rest was history. The 25-year-old phenom put up career averages in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals en route to his first All-Star selection, improving shooting percentages across the board. But his greatest accomplishment? Challenging LeBron James and the Cavs to seven exhausting games in the first round of the playoffs. That may not count towards MIP votes, but it was the cherry on top of a season Oladipo wasn’t supposed to headline.

Odds to win: 91%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Yes.

Instagram Photo

It’s hard to make a name for yourself when you’re playing behind a bona fide MVP in James Harden and one of the greatest point guards in history in Chris Paul. Clint Capela rose to the occasion anyway. The 24-year-old made his fourth NBA campaign his most meaningful, leading the league in field goal percentage at 65.2% and anchoring the Houston defense with a top-20 defensive real plus-minus. Capela posted regular-season averages of 13.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks, and was, ironically, the true difference-maker for a team that relies on small-ball and three-point shooting.

Odds to win: 7%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Not necessarily. He hasn’t been impactful in the Conference Finals, showing he has even more room to improve.

Instagram Photo

New York basketball fans actually have something to be proud of! Brooklyn’s Spencer Dinwiddie is up for consideration for Most Improved Player this year, and he hasn’t been shy about knowing he deserves it. One of few bright spots in yet another gloomy season for the Nets, Dinwiddie averaged career bests in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and minutes. Called upon to fill gaps left by a sidelined Jeremy Lin and oft-inactive D’Angelo Russell, Dinwiddie stole the show, proving himself a remarkable talent–and a clutch one at that, hitting game-winning shots against the Timberwolves, Pistons, and Hawks all in January alone. Dinwiddie’s become the face of the Brooklyn Nets organization, and hopefully will lead them somewhere a little more meaningful come 2019.

Odds to win: 2%

Would we regret not giving him this award? No. It’s hard to remember that the Nets are an NBA team.

Coach of the Year

Instagram Photo

It’s awkward, but not unexpected. The recently fired Dwane Casey will most likely be earning Coach of the Year accolades this year after leading the Toronto Raptors through an incredible regular season. He completely overhauled the team’s system in the offseason, successfully changing the Raptors’ very culture and accruing the best record in the Eastern Conference. Thus reveals the dramatic irony of these end-of-season awards: the Cavaliers’ 4-0 domination of the Raptors in the Conference Semifinals this year led directly to Casey losing his job, in spite of a brilliant and revolutionary regular season. Whether or not you agree that Casey deserved the sack, acknowledge that he absolutely deserves this award.

Odds to win: 75%

Would we regret not giving him this award? The real question is, “will we regret his firing?” and the answer is an emphatic yes.

Instagram Photo

Losing talents like Gordon Hayward and George Hill is a tough pill to swallow for any coach approaching a season filled with question marks, but aforementioned nominees Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert made Quin Snyder’s job a lot easier. You know by now that the Utah Jazz achieved the unbelievable, notching the No. 5 seed in the West after a miserable start to 2017-18. Nine games below .500 in late January, Utah finished with an outstanding winning record. Snyder engineered an equal opportunity offense and a league-leading defense, ballasted by Mitchell and Gobert, respectively. The Jazz, once counted out of contention, have emerged as a revamped threat to the NBA hierarchy.

Odds to win: 15%

Would we regret not giving him this award? If the Jazz could have managed to upset the Rockets, yes.

Instagram Photo

Brad Stevens was bordering on an afterthought going into Coach of the Year voting, largely because the Celtics hadn’t yet pulled off the insane postseason run we’re bearing witness to at this very moment. Stevens has emerged as a Popovich-like savant, instilling a winning, plug-n-play system that has allowed the Celtics–who’ve been playing an injury-induced game of musical chairs all season–to emerge as true title contenders. His development and utilization of young talent in Terry Rozier, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum has adequately supplemented the absences of All-Star offseason free agent acquisitions in Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving.

Odds to win: 10%

Would we regret not giving him this award? Obviously.

Former President Of Temple University Fraternity Charged With Rape

Ari Goldstein, the 21-year-old ex-president of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity at Temple University, was arraigned on Wednesday, May 16, on charges of sexual assault.

According to reports, the investigation into Goldstein and Alpha Epsilon Pi, commonly referred to as AEPi, began in early May after two teenage Temple University students said they were sexually assaulted at the fraternity house in February and March. The house is located on Broad and Norris Street in Philadelphia.

Temple University halted the fraternity’s activities in April after “multiple credible reports” of underage drinking, drug use, and at least two sexual assault incidents.

via New York Daily News:

Philadelphia police previously said three women, including two 19-year-old Temple students, reported being sexually assaulted at Alpha Epsilon Pi events. At least one of the assaults happened in February, cops said, and a second the following month.

One of the teens reportedly told cops the frat brothers gave her several drinks, after which she blacked out — believing she was sexually assaulted.

Alpha Epsilon Pi’s national chapter tried to distance itself from Goldstein on Wednesday, noting the actual arrest happened after the Temple student was removed as chapter president.

Philadelphia Police Captain Mark Burgmann said during a press conference about one of the victims: “She was given several drinks by members of the fraternity. She says she became dizzy and disoriented, and that’s the last thing she remembered until she woke up in bed with one of the members of the fraternity.”

Jonathan Pierce, a spokesperson for Alpha Epsilon Pi, said Goldstein was removed as chapter president “several weeks ago.” At the time of this writing, he was being held on $2 million bail. He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 31.

You can read Pierce’s full statement for AEPi below:

“Alpha Epsilon Pi International has no additional information about the charges being brought. We have not been informed — nor would we expect to be — of any of the allegations made or the evidence found. We will continue, though, to cooperate with Temple University and all local authorities. The young man charged was not the chapter president at the time of his arrest. He had been removed as president several weeks ago and the chapter has been suspended by the International Fraternity for nearly a month. We are, obviously, deeply troubled by the charges leveled at this young man. We believe in due process but there is clearly no place for this behavior in our organization and, if proven true, I would expect the individual to be permanently expelled from our fraternity.”

Let’s Revisit Some Of The Best Moments Of NFL’s ‘Hard Knocks’

$

The Cleveland Browns have been selected as the subjects for the 2018 season of Hard Knocks. There are going to be a lot of intriguing storylines, like the QB battle between Tyrod Taylor and number one pick Baker Mayfield. The Browns are coming off of a 0-16 season and went through a major roster overhaul this offseason. There will be big personalities, like receivers Josh Gordon and Jarvis Landry, along with Mayfield. There will be lots of drama, comedy, and intrigue surrounding the players and coaches, so let’s take a look back at some of the best Hard Knocks moments.

Vontae Davis gets traded from the Dolphins to the Colts

Vontae Davis was one of the best cornerbacks in the league during his time with the Colts. However, he was traded to the Colts during the 2012 preseason from the Miami Dolphins. His reaction was so genuine and so heartbreaking that it couldn’t be left off this list. Reactions like this are precisely what Hard Knocks wants to capture.

William Hayes Believes What??

Aaron Donald is the best defensive lineman on the Rams, and probably the best in the league, but he didn’t win the hearts of football fans like William Hayes did during 2016’s Hard Knocks with the Los Angeles Rams. While taking a tour of a dinosaur exhibit, Hayes told us all that he doesn’t believe that dinosaurs are real, even while looking at real dinosaur bones. Yet, it’s revealed later in the show that he does believe in mermaids.

Rex Ryan Wants A Snack

Rex Ryan was one of the most exciting coaches the NFL had seen in a while. The Jets had Hard Knocks in 2010, and Ryan gave a very emotional speech to his team the night before a game. This is the inside the locker room type view that football fans want to see from the show, and Ryan didn’t disappoint, finishing his speech with one of the most memorable quotes in NFL history.

Chad Ochocinco

Need I say more? Anything coming out of this guy’s mouth is must-see TV. Hard Knocks understood that and during their first season with the Bengals. I would say more, but just listen…

BIG Vince Wilfork Shows It Off

Vince Wilfork only spent two seasons in Houston, but it was a very memorable experience, thanks to Hard Knocks. During their season with the Texans, Wilfork decided to let it all hang loose one day. He decided to come to work wearing just his overalls… nothing else. As scary as that might sound coming from a 325-pound man, it’s still a moment that will live forever.

Michael Keaton Went Full Superhero During His Kent State Commencement Speech

Warner Bros.

Its graduation season, and with graduation season, comes Commencement Speech season. Actors, politicians, CEOs, musicians, artists, even Presidents (I saw President Obama speak at my Rutgers University graduation, no big deal) make their way to various universities across the nation in an effort to impart lasting wisdom on America’s future.

Not all graduating classes are so lucky, though, as years upon years of graduates have been forced to sit through speeches that were given by obscure doctors and businessmen. Others (like myself, who saw the President speak, NBD), however, were lucky enough to see someone like Batman.

Michael Keaton — the ORIGINAL Batman, the Bruce Wayne actor who got the Bat Craze in America started — was the speaker at this year’s Kent State University & gave those lucky kids a speech to remember.

While most speakers choose to leave the graduating class with an inspirational or sentimental quote, Keaton decided to sign off with something far more self-aware.

“I’ve got two words that I want you all to remember. They’re very important, and if I leave you with anything, I’m going to leave you with these two words. And those two words are: I’m Batman,” Keaton said before signing off.

And just like that, the 2018 Kent State graduating class was given a memory they’ll never forget. Well played, Batman.

Ronda Rousey has jumped headfirst into the WWE scene. This week, the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion made her WWE house show debut and absolutely crushed it. Rousey beat up three women inside of the ring, before pulling out her signature armbar and submitting fellow WWE Superstar Mickie James.

Check out video of her performance below:

Here is another angle:

From Deadspin:

According to the Wrestling Observer, Rousey was originally scheduled to face James in a singles match before it was changed to a six-woman tag. The match was built around Moon and Nattie attempting to get to Rousey for a hot tag. When the former MMA fighter entered about eight minutes into the match, she took down all three of her opponents before locking on her submission for the win.

Rousey is set to face off against Nia Jaz for the RAW Women’s Championship next month at WWE Money in the Bank.

On May 18th, 2018, a gunman opened fire at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas. As of 10:45 AM, the situation was reported as under control and a suspect, a student at the High School, was in custody.

What Happened

A man was arrested early Friday, May 18, after storming the lobby of the Trump National Doral Golf Club near Miami, Florida, ranting about the President and exchanging gunfire with officers.

The shooter was identified as 42-year-old Jonathan Oddi, who allegedly pulled a fire alarm around 1:30am to lure emergency responders into the golf course’s lobby. He also draped an American flag over the lobby’s counter.

After a brief shoot-out with police, Oddi was wounded and apprehended. He left the scene on a gurney, to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities at Kendall Regional Medical Center. He was last reported in stable condition.

A Doral officer sustained a broken wrist during the attack and was last reported in good condition at Baptist Hospital. No other injuries have been reported.

Although the police did not immediately describe a motive for the attack at the resort, they said the man had tried to ambush officers and had yelled “anti-Trump” rhetoric.

via New York Times

“We don’t know what his intentions were — long-term intentions — but we know what he was trying to do at the time, and it appears that he was trying to engage our police officers, some kind of ambush-type attack, trying to lure our police officers,” said Juan J. Perez, the director of the Miami-Dade Police Department.

“We immediately were able to neutralize this threat,” Mr. Perez said. “If not for the heroic efforts of the police officers that responded here today, this individual would have caused a lot of harm, and he was not able to do that.”

The authorities said they believed Oddi, who was shot and taken to a hospital, had acted alone in the episode. The Doral police said there was “no further threat” at the club. The whole incident lasted just a few minutes.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the officer-involved shooting, while Homeland Security and the FBI are expected to investigate the motive.

A former Playboy Playmate jumped with her 7-year-old son to their deaths from a Midtown hotel Friday, May 18. Stephanie Adams, 47, leaped with young Vincent from the top floor of the Gotham Hotel around 8:30am, according to Dailymail.

The pair checked into the hotel around 6pm Thursday, May 17, and were staying in a 25th-floor penthouse suite, NYPD Chief of Manhattan Detectives William Aubrey said at a press conference. Their bodies were found on a second-floor landing in the hotel’s rear courtyard. It’s unclear if she was holding her son, or if he jumped at his own will.

“Early this morning investigators located an individual whose attention was drawn to that same second-floor area when he heard two loud noises,” Aubrey said. “His attention was drawn to that and he discovered these two deceased individuals.”

The deaths come as Adams waged a fierce court battle with her estranged husband, Charles Nicolai, 47, owner of Wall Street Chiropractic & Wellness.

Their relationship was so bad that they had begun meeting for custody exchanges at a police precinct in Tribeca, reports Dailymail.

‘It ensures no violence takes place,’ a friend told The Post in March.

Adams, who posed in the November 1992 issue of Playboy, was also awarded $1.2million from the NYPD, after suing the department over a 2006 incident in which she was thrown to the ground by a cop who falsely claimed she pulled a gun on him.

Adams and her ex were also sued in 2013 by Dilek Edwards, a former massage therapist in Nicolai’s office.

Edwards said she was let go after Nicolai claimed his then-wife was ‘jealous’ of ‘too cute’ Edwards. The lawsuit was initially thrown out, but later restored by an appeals court who said Edwards could sue for gender discrimination.

Adams was supposedly a self-made millionaire by the age of 30. In addition to her work as a model, she also spent time as an investor and founded a skincare line called GODDESSY Organics. On the skincare line’s website, she claims to be the author of two dozen metaphysical books, astronomy calendars, and tarot cards.

She describes herself as a “generational occultist, psychic and spiritualist.” She goes onto say that she has “decided to dedicate most of her time towards business, philanthropy, and developing as much of a private life as she can possibly have.”

Florida Friday: All Of This Week’s Headlines From America’s Most Interesting State

Oh, Florida — like our wives and girlfriends, we can’t live with you, but we certainly couldn’t live without you. You are like the Drunk Uncle in the family that is the United States of America: you mean well & have a good heart, but show up to the party already hammered and then tell Cousin Derek to go f*ck himself before you fall face first through the all-glass living room coffee table. You’re a wildcard, but you’re our wildcard, and we love ya for it.

For some reason, though, more than any other state in the union, Florida has an uncanny knack of churning out the most preposterous headlines you’ve ever heard of.

“Homeless Man Engages in Sword Fight with Alligator”

“Pink-Haired Couple Rob Bank Armed Only with String Cheese”

“Party Clown Arrested for Smoking Crack in Front of Children”

Are these real stories? Did I just make these headlines up? Who knows. I guess you’ll have to Google it. Either way, the point is they sound real and that’s because in Florida, literally, anything is possible, even the most bizarre.

Okay, I’ll admit, the headlines above you are fake, but the ones below are entirely real, and that’s what makes Florida so Florida: you cannot tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not because it all sounds so wildly ridiculous.

“Teen Bites the Head Off Live Chicken”

“Elementary School Teacher Arrested For Selling Marijuana”

“Police Searching For Cross-Dresser Who Keeps Leaving Underwear On Random Cars”

“Man Causes $100K in Damage at Local Walmart, Blames ‘Hookah Smoking Caterpillar'”

“Teacher Placed on Leave For Drowning Racoons in Class”

“Woman Poses as Federal Agent to Score Free Chick-Fil-A”

“This Chainsaw Wielding Nun is the Hero Florida Deserves Right Now”

“Man Whips Out Samurai Sword During Road Rage Incident”

“Teacher Suspended For Allowing Students to Hook Up in Class”

Needless to say, you get our point: Florida is a mad, mad place.

So with that in mind, we’ve decided to do a weekly round-up of all the headlines from America’s Bastard Son of a State … the only and only Florida.

via Harris County Sheriff’s Office Twitter

17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis has been identified as the person responsible for today’s shooting at Santa Fe High School that killed at least eight and injured at least 12. Unconfirmed reports indicated that Pagourtzis reportedly used a shotgun in the shooting, however, police have yet to confirm what type of weapon Pagourtzis used. In addition to the deadly mass shooting, police found pressure cookers and pipe bombs around the school, some of which Pagourtzis threw into classrooms. Pagourtzis, an 11th-grade student at the high school, was first identified by CBS News.

Santa Fe High School in Texas was placed on when the shooting took place in an art class on school grounds around 7:30 a.m. local time. Santa Fe Police, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and ATF agents all responded to the scene. Santa Fe ISD PD is the leading the investigation. Injured students and staff were transported to nearby Clear Lake Medical Center and Mainland Medical Center.

Pagourtzisis is currently in custody while another person of interest was initially detained. While it has been confirmed that the second person of interest is a student, it was not clear why they were being questioned. According to unconfirmed reports from some witnesses, the shooter yelled “Surprise!” as the shooting began. One witness, a Santa Fe student identified as Dustin, told ABC 13 that the shooter was wearing “big boots and a trench coat” and that the shooter was “bullied” and “didn’t have a lot of friends.” Dustin also indicated that Pagourtzis was “bullied by coaches”.

Following the shooting, the Santa Fe ISD confirmed that additional explosives were found in the school and in the “areas adjacent to the school.” Police are currently in the process of rendering them safe.

Photo from Pagourtzis’ since-deleted Facebook account

Screenshots of Pagourtzis’ now-deleted Facebook page show that he posted images of a t-shirt with “Born to Kill” written across it and a trench coat covered in pins he said represented “kamikaze tactics” and “bravery.”

The Santa Fe ISD released the following statement on Facebook about the tragic incident:

“This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The situation is active but has been contained. There have been confirmed injuries. Details will be released as we receive information. Law enforcement will continue to secure the building and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location. All other campuses are operating under their regular schedules.

Students from the high school are being transported by SFISD transportation to the Alamo Gym located at 13306 Highway 6. Parents may reunite with their students at this location.

This district will continue to keep you updated as information is available. Safety and communication are our top priorities.

In the aftermath of the shooting, President Trump tweeted “School shooting in Texas. Early reports not looking good. God bless all!” He also spoke to the media, saying “We grieve for the terrible loss of life and send our support and love to everyone affected by this absolutely horrific attack. We’re with you in this tragic hour and we will be with you forever. May God heal the injured and may God comfort the wounded and may God be with the victims and with the victims’ families. Very sad day. Very, very sad.”

Santa Fe school district superintendent released the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that I stand here to share with you that we experienced an unthinkable tragedy at our high school this morning. We are grieving the loss of members of our SFISD family.”

Santa Fe High School, located at 16000 Highway 6, is roughly 36 miles outside of Houston. According to the Texas Education Agency, the high school’s enrollment is approximately 1,400 students.
