10 Need To Know Terms In Wrestling

$

The Wrestling fanbase is a vast and passionate one. From the casual WWE fan to the diehard who watches every Ring of Honor, New Japan Pro Wrestling, or PWG show they can, it is a community who loves hard. And with any community and fanbase comes terms that may confuse an outsider. Why are they calling the angry guy a heel? Why did they say that promo was a “shoot”? And what the heck is kayfabe? All these phrases and more will come up in articles and conversations with wrestling fans, and sometimes the fanbase isn’t the best about informing people what they mean. So here are 10 terms to know when talking about wrestling.

Face

Instagram Photo

This is the term for the good guy. The guy you are supposed to be rooting for. One of the more famous current examples of a Face is John Cena. In all situations, Cena is presented as the one who is standing up for what is right. From his “Hustle, Loyalty, Respect” moniker to his devoted quest to tell kids to “Never Give Up” he is made to be the man we all strive to be.  He was built that way over the years by the WWE, but there are also “Babyfaces” that find their way through natural support from the crowd. Daniel Bryan is the best example of this. He was never intended to be WWE’s pick as the top guy, but his ability and determination endeared him to the crowd. At that point, it no longer mattered what WWE’s plan was, the crowd wanted Bryan. The face doesn’t always have to be a “good guy” though.

For the best example look no further than everyone’s favorite Anti-Hero Stone Cold Steve Austin. In no way did he conduct himself like someone we should want to be, but in his own destructive, foul-mouthed way he fought his evil boss and the evil corporation. Going down as one of the most popular wrestlers of all time. Not all good guys stay good though, like when Steve Austin joined forces with Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania X-Seven. This is called a Heel-Turn, which brings us too…

Heel

Instagram Photo

The heel is the term for the bad guy. If someone is referred to as the heel, he or she is the one who is written for you to hate. The company doesn’t want you to cheer for them, they want you to root against them. The heels often criticize their fanbase and cheat to earn their victories. A great example of a Heel historically is Triple H. Often cheating to get his wins. So much so that the sledgehammer he would often wield has become synonymous with The Game himself.

Work

Instagram Photo

When you hear that something is a “work,” it means that it is only true in the storyline. Often wrestlers will act hurt, but in reality, it is to further a narrative. Sometimes WWE will want someone to drop a title but don’t want to make the superstar look weak so they will have them become “injured” in a match, so they are at a disadvantage. It is then more understandable when they lose. That fake injury is the work. A work can also come in the form of a promo. Superstars will sometimes talk about a deep seeded hatred they have for each other, or attack someone backstage. They manufacture a backstory to make it seem the two superstars genuinely hate each other. Sometimes real emotions can find their way into promos and matches, that’s called a…

Shoot

Instagram Photo

A shoot means that something is real. If a superstar gets injured during a match and you see an article refer to it as a shoot, it means that the injury is real and not intended to further the storyline. A shoot also can apply to a story being based on real emotions and events. Famously The Miz has crossed into this territory twice in recent history. His famous promo when he tore into then retired Daniel Bryan on an episode of Talking Smack was said to contain shoot feelings, as well as his mixed tag rivalry with his wife Maryse against John Cena and Nikki Bella. It was well documented that the bad blood between Nikki Bella and Maryse was genuine. Sometimes shoot finds its way into the match itself. When Matt Hardy famously exposed then girlfriend Lita for having an affair with then friend Edge, a very ugly program followed. After firing Hardy, WWE brought him back and actually made their public break up a storyline. When Edge and Hardy finally met the first few punches were very much a shoot. The blows were extremely stiff…which brings us to…

Stiff

Instagram Photo

This one is pretty straightforward. If you wrestle stiff, it means your punches and what not hurt more than other superstars. Stiff sometimes is coupled with sloppiness or inexperience. Some superstars that other wrestlers have famously said wrestle stiff are Shane McMahon and Goldberg. Both men wrestled a very finite amount of time and matches so it would make sense that their punches weren’t as fluid and well practiced as some of their more workhorse coworkers.

Kayfabe

Instagram Photo

Kayfabe refers to something that is in the WWE storyline. If something is Kayfabe then is acknowledged within the WWE narrative and timeline, if it is not kayfabe it will not show up in the show. This most often adheres to relationships. Very often you will notice that WWE will acknowledge some relationships, like The Miz and Maryse, and barely recognize others, like Alexa Bliss and Buddy Murphy. Famously WWE had some issues with the announcement of Lana and Rusev becoming engaged because it directly contradicted a current storyline they were in. The best way to remember what kayfabe means is that it is essentially the wrestling version of something being canon or non-canon.

Over

Instagram Photo

If something is over it means that it is incredibly popular with fans. Whenever an article refers to something or someone trying to get over then the company wants it to be popular with fans. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Roman Reigns is a superstar that WWE is desperately trying to get over, but the WWE Universe is resisting it. Rusev Day is something that has become a very over property naturally without a lot of company support.

Heat

Instagram Photo

To have heat means to have the ire of the fans. When you are a heel, you strive to get heat from the fans. The more heat you have, the more they will boo you and cheer your opponent who is most likely a face the company wants the crowd to cheer. Sometimes superstars receive heat when it isn’t desired. The formerly mentioned Roman Reigns carries a certain amount of heat because the fans aren’t happy with how the WWE has booked him. They feel he is being forced down their throats as the new face of the company and it has garnered him some of the wrong kind of heat.

Rib

Instagram Photo

A Rib is a practical joke played on a wrestler or when coworkers give a superstar a hard time. Often times you will hear of veteran members of the roster “ribbing” the new guys. Sometimes the announcers will also rib a superstar for something that has happened, like when Titus O’Neil tripped on his entrance during The Greatest Royal Rumble.

Jobber

Instagram Photo

A Jobber is a wrestler who is sent out specifically to lose to another superstar to make him or her look better. Also referred to as jobbing out or doing a job. If someone is sent out to do a job they are often on the wrong end of a squash match (a match that is short and decisive for the winner). A Jobber is usually a local talent brought on for one show to be fed to an up an coming superstar. This was how WWE built current main eventer, Braun Stroman. Sometimes articles will say a superstar has been relegated to being a Jobber since it seems he loses so often. A talented superstar who has drawn that criticism recently is Dolph Ziggler. He has appeared to be the stepping stone for talent coming out of NXT. Hopefully, his new partnership with NXT call-up Drew McIntyre will change that luck, rather than continue the trend.

Wrestling fans and writers, this one included, will often throw around terms they are aware of but may not be clear to a new fan. Hopefully, this article was able to help with some of them!

Paige Ginn is an American Instagram model and Youtuber known for her peculiar sense of humor. Ginn first gained attention on the internet for her hilariously brutal videos of her falling down in public places. Can it be a little gross? Sureeeee. But sometimes that’s what it takes in comedy. Regardless of how you feel about her sense of humor, you have to give Paige Ginn credit for finding her niche and running with it.

Dave Chappelle Comments On Michelle Wolf’s White House Correspondents Dinner Set

Michelle Wolf went from relative unknown (despite having an HBO special and upcoming Netflix show, still pretty unknown) to a national talking point in less than 24 hours after she delivered a scathing stand-up comedy set at this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner.

Now, while people from both sides of the aisle have been quick to praise or condemn the outspoken Wolf, comedians all seem to feel the same way about Wolf: they respect the hell out of her. And you can add legendary comedian Dave Chappelle to the list of people who respect the performance Wolf put on that night.

Speaking to PBS Newshour, Chappelle discussed Wolf’s routine and why it was so important that she didn’t pull any punches.

“I really respected what I saw. I don’t know who those people are that she—she can’t say that to them, ’cause they offend people all the time,” Chappelle said of the Trump administration’s pushback against Wolf. “And I think that for many people, not everybody who watched it, but for many people, it’s cathartic to watch that woman speak truth to power like that.”

“And whether they understand it or not, there was an enormous amount of levity in what she did. But it was very flat-footed and it was grounded in her truth, and whether I agree with it or not, I gotta respect the artistry. I gotta respect the gangsta. I know how hard it is to do what she did in front of that lame-ass crowd. And she—I think she nailed it. I thought it was beautiful. And I—I didn’t see her pander once and I thought that was beautiful,” Chappelle said.

When you have Dave Chappelle in your corner, it’s hard to lose. Keep on kicking ass, Michelle.

Authorities have arrested a 17-year-old Plano High School student identified as Matin Azizi Yarand who was allegedly planning a mass shooting at Stonebriar Centre shopping mall in Frisco, North Texas; according to reports, the alleged shooting was planned to take place sometime this upcoming May. Officials were alerted to the plan when they found Yarand’s “manifesto,” that gave more information to the planned attack.

What happened?

According to police, the “manifesto” supposedly claimed that Yarand swore allegiance to ISIS. Authorities also believed that he was planning on recruiting others into helping him with the planned mass shooting spree, although authorities otherwise believed he wanted to be a “lone wolf.”

According to CBS 11, Yarand was believed to have spent  $1,400 on weapons for the planned attack.

According to Dallas News, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis issued the following statements in a news release:

“We are fortunate that the brave men and women of local and federal law enforcement work around the clock to prevent acts of terrorism and mass shootings.”

“I’d like to thank the FBI’s North Texas Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Frisco and Plano Police Departments for their efforts in this case and their vigilance in protecting the citizens of Collin County.”

Frisco Police Chief John Bruce also issued the following statement:

“The facts of this case, though alarming, serve as an example of the power of cooperation and the importance of each individual remaining vigilant in the spirit of ‘see something-say something.'”

Who is Matin Azizi Yarand?

Yarand, whose name has also been stylized as “Matin Azizi-Yarand,” was a 17-year-old student at Plano High School in North Texas.

As mentioned, a manifesto developed by Yarand gave details about himself and the planned attack; in addition to allegedly pledging himself to ISIS, he reportedly also wrote a “Message to America” that supposedly listed his reasons for planning the attack.

At this time, Yarand faces charges of making a terroristic threat and criminal solicitation of capital murder; currently being held with bail set at $3 million, he could face up to life in prison if convicted.

Why The 2017/2018 Champions League Is The Highest-Scoring Season Yet

$
0
0

There has been a noticeable change in soccer in the past couple of years– a lot more scoring is occurring. Instead of the 2-1 matches we’ve been used to in the past, the wins have now become more significant. A prime example is Liverpool’s 5-2 lead over Roma in the first leg of the semi-final. The 2017/2018 Champions League season has followed suit. It has become the highest-scoring season ever in the history’s league. It’s been goals galore. Out of the 123 games so far, 391 goals have been made, which is about 3.18 goals per game. So what’s caused this change?

Attack Pressing

Instagram Photo

Between 1992-2009, the Premier League saw an average of 2.7 goals per game in one season. Since 2010, the average has risen to more than 2.7. This can be accredited to a different style of play, specifically attack pressing. It’s not exactly a new tactic, but it’s one that managers have been using more frequently. In fact, it has been used since the 1970s; however, there’s a slight difference as to why the tactic is more effective now.

Modern players are more fit and perform at higher-intensities. The players operate at two extremes. The current algorithm is quick sprints followed by low-intensity play. This is completely opposite from how soccer players performed in the past. Those players functioned at a more steady pace, so when they pressed on the attack, it was not as severe as the ones we see today.

The Biggest Supporters

Instagram Photo

Liverpool is the most notorious user of the attack pressing tactic. Manager Jürgen Klopp is an avid believer in it, and his team’s standings demonstrate it’s success. Liverpool pushes it’s midfielders forward with the intention to win the ball further up the field, and once possession is won, to quickly send the ball out to the strikers. Opposing teams usually become overwhelmed and lose their formation in the process. This could explain why Liverpool’s James Milner leads the Champions League in assists.

The Non-Supporters

Instagram Photo

Though the tactic is designed to make plays, there is a downside. Attack pressing does create more opportunity for scoring, but it also leaves a weak defensive line. With the majority of players pushing forward, a loss of possession in midfield could rapidly lead to an advantage for the other team.

Despite the growing use of this trend, not all managers have adapted it. Manchester United manager José Mourinho has his team play with a more defensive approach. Mourinho has been criticized for this because not only do people think he’s forgoing the full potential of his players’ skills, but the stats speak for themselves. Manchester United scored only 13 goals in the Champions League as opposed to Liverpool’s 38.

Deyana Mounira Instagram: Best Photos & Must-See Pictures

Deyana Mounira is a Lebanese Instagram model living in California. She has over 315K IG followers and if you take a stroll through her gallery you’ll know why. Mounira has appeared in music videos for artists like G-Eazy and Future but has made recent headlines for being sued by millionaire Tony Toutouni.

Tony Toutouni is a nightclub owner, property developer, and self-proclaimed King of Instagram who regularly posts pictures of himself with scantily clad women.

After a shoot at his Los Angeles mansion with Mounira, Toutouni sued the model for $1.5 million for “arousing” his dog Hef during a poolside bikini photoshoot.

Instagram Photo

Deyana hit back at his claims and accused him of sexually harassing her throughout the shoot.

She told The Sun:

“During this entire amateur shoot with Tony, I was very uncomfortable because Tony was harassing me. He provoked his dog to hump me and told me to allow it.”

“I have a video posted in my IG that has Tony’s voice telling me to allow his dog to take these actions and says ‘let him do it’, ‘f*** her’ and ‘just stand there and let him sniff your butt’.”

“I felt vulnerable in this situation and tried to get myself out of this environment as best as I could.”

Mounira posted this disturbing video on her Instagram as proof of Toutouni’s torment.

Toutouni’s lawyer responded by saying she was “explicitly told NOT to post any videos of Hef as it reflects poorly on my client who is a public figure.”

WWE Backlash 2018: Matches, Previews, & Predictions

$

On May 6th the WWE Universe will see its first real taste of the post-Wrestlemania 34 world. Yes, we had the Greatest Royal Rumble on April 27th, but that was more of a one-off event. Backlash will see feuds settled so that the WWE can officially move into new stories and angles. This will also mark the first PPV in which WWE returns to the shared event format. For the past year, the fans have had two PPV’s per month, each catering specifically to Raw or SmackDown with only the big four (Wrestlemania, Summer Slam, Survivor Series, and Royal Rumble) bringing the two brands together.  It was a good experiment and a valiant effort to get as many superstars on the card as possible, but it also gave the fanbase a little show fatigue. It’s hard to expect the fans to watch four weekly shows and two major PPV’s in a month.

At this event, we’ll see three rematches for titles from Wrestlemania and four total title matches. In the WWE “rules” recently usurped champions have the chance to get their titles back, and we’ll see three former champions try and reclaim their prizes from their Wrestlemania and post Wrestlemania losses. There are also some new feuds budding and an old feud being reborn. There’s a lot to see in the fallout of Wrestlemania 34 and here’s where you can see it, and what you must see.

AJ Styles (c)  vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship

Predictions & Must-See Matches

Instagram Photo

Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe

Samoa Joe is back on the main roster and made a significant statement at the Greatest Royal Rumble. The fatal four-way ladder match was the best match of the night, and Joe was no small part of that, using the ladder as a blunt object of destruction in convincing fashion.  Roman Reigns is coming off of a Greatest Royal Rumble that was a little strange, to say the least. Reigns took on Brock Lesnar in a steel cage match, and the finish left a lot of people wondering… was that on purpose? Reigns did his signature spear to Lesnar and broke through the side of the cage. Even though the announcers continued to remind us over and over that whoever had both feet touch the ground first while trying to escape the cage was the winner, and Reigns rolled over and had his feet touch first, Lesnar was still declared the winner for “touching the ground first.” If this wasn’t an accident, then the story was handled very haphazardly. The plus side is it added fuel to the fire that is Samoa Joe’s Promos. Joe and Reigns have had issues in the past, and Joe has been cutting amazing promos at the expense of Reigns continuous struggles against Lesnar. Backlash will be a perfect place to let that simmer over, mainly because after the event both men will be on separate shows again. This will most likely give them the green light to put everything into this match. Love him or hate him Reigns puts on good matches, and Samoa Joe is always solid. Look for these two to put on a real slobber knocker.

Carmella vs. Charlotte Flair

On the SmackDown Live after Wrestlemania, Carmella took advantage of Charlotte Flair being attacked by the recently promoted duo, The Iconics and cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase. With the help of the beating put on by Billie Kay and Peyton Royce, The Princess of Staten Island successfully cashed in the first ever Women’s Money in the Bank Briefcase to get her first SmackDown Live Women’s Championship. Charlotte was not happy. Now she has her rematch. This will be a big moment for Carmella. She has limited singles action under her belt, and she will be facing off against arguably the most talented Woman working right now. Carmella has had good moments in her matches and is a hard worker, so if she steps up this could be a great match. Look for The Iconics to come out and ruin things for Charlotte before it’s over.

AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Will this finally be the dream match that WWE has long promised us for these two? Their Wrestlemania match was good. Their Greatest Royal Rumble match was really good. Could their Backlash match be great? It seemed that the heel vs. face angle at the Greatest Royal Rumble worked far better for the two superstars then their original face vs. face angle used at Wrestlemania. It gave Nakamura the ability to make his already brutal style even more so and caused the anger that Styles fought with believable and justifiable. I mean wouldn’t you want to kick the crap out of a guy who seemed to have a homing beacon for your groin and wouldn’t stop punching it… They had their blow-off match at Greatest Royal Rumble, with both men getting disqualified via count out because Styles was more focused on punishing Nakamura then getting him back in the ring, and thanks to champions advantage he held onto his title. Now that we’re back on the main line up of WWE PPVs we could see a more technical fight, and quite possibly a title change hands.

The PPV after Wrestlemania is usually somewhat of a throwaway event, but that’s the exact reason WWE could end up shocking you. They need people to keep watching and if we all start to think that Backlash is one to skip then WWE will have to kick up the excitement for this particular event. We’ll find out what they have planned on May 6th.

Best NHL Fighters Of All Time

NHL/YouTube

It’s no secret that fighting in the sport of hockey has taken a backseat in recent years. Player safety and other things of that nature have led to the decrease in fisticuffs. There are still a few players in the league that have that fighting mentality, but over the time the NHL has been around, there have been some legendary players who were best known for dropping the gloves at a moments notice. These warriors made their name and created their own legacy by doing what many didn’t. Let’s take a look at the most recognized fighters of all time.

Georges Laraque

Georges Laraque played in the NHL for 14 seasons and was one of the most feared enforcers in the sport. At 6’3, 245 pounds, the Montreal native was an undisputed heavyweight among his peers and combatants in his seven seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. Laraque racked up over 1126 penalty minutes in his career, and, participated in 138 fights according to hockeyfights.com

Stan Jonathan

In the fight-filled era of the 1970’s, Stan Jonathan was revered as one of the most-feared enforcers. Playing for the “Big Bad” Bruins of that decade, Jonathan, the 175 pounder, wasn’t afraid to drop them with anyone. Jonathan would play for seven years in the NHL — ending his career in Pittsburgh — but even in that short span, was a fighting machine.

Derek Boogaard

The late 28-year old big man from Saskatoon, Boogaard in his six seasons, was the consummate NHL enforcer.  Boogard. In his time in the league, Boogaard became the most notorious for his knockouts, so much so, that his fellow counterpart, Georges Laraque, retired because he knew it would end badly if he faced him. Totaling 66 fights, it was a shock around the league when he accidentally overdosed. Boogard was one of the last of his breed.

Terry O’Reilly

It’s no surprise another member of the Big Bad Bruins finds his way on to this list. O’Reilly — on those famed Bruins teams — would throw his weight around at anyone, and if the opposition came back at him, he had no problem obliging to get into an old-fashioned donnybrook. Over his 13-year career, O’Reilly tallied up to 2100 penalty minutes and a mind-numbing 172 fights.

Dave Semenko

Oh, how much fun it must have been to be this guy, who was in charge of having Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky’s back on the Oilers Stanley Cup winning teams of the late 80’s. Semenko played his role to perfection in Edmonton as the bodyguard, and if needed, as a goon who would throw down with anyone who tried to hurt The Great One. From 1979 to 1988, the Winnipeg native fought over 70 times in the regular season and postseason.

Dave Schultz

Known as “The Hammer” and adored by Flyers fans, and hated by every other fanbase around the league, Dave Schultz was as mean and tough as they came. As one of the most iconic members of the Broad Street Bullies, Schultz wasn’t intimidated by anybody. His 472 penalty minutes in 1974-75 will never, ever be broken. Being that hated, Schultz ended up fighting 158 times in just seven seasons of playing.

John Ferguson

Considered by many as the original enforcer, John Ferguson played a huge part in that nasty, blood riven time, known as old-time hockey. Ferguson was an engine, taking a boatload of penalty and fighting anything or anyone that could move. Even standing at 6’0, 178 pounds, Ferguson didn’t let his size affect him, as he partook in 49 fights from 1963 to 1970.

Marty McSorley

One of the most recognized names of the 1990’s for his dirty play, Marty McSorley was a maniac on skates. People say he was not just a simple goon, and McSorley proved them right. He is fourth all-time in penalty minutes for an NHLer, and just like Dave Semenko, he was another one of the famed Wayne Gretzky protectors. As for dropping the gloves, in over 16 seasons, McSorley fought a record 225 times.

Tie Domi

For someone who only stood 5’10, Tie Domi had no problem taking on whoever was in his path. Described as a sideshow, Domi would put on a show every single time fisticuffs were involved. Those antics earned Domi the third-most penalty minutes for a player in the history of the game, with 3,515. By the end of his career in 2005-06, Domi had been in a staggering 255 fights.

Dave “Tiger” Williams

Aside from his awesome nickname, Dave Williams was like a tiger out on the ice: Imposing and Ferocious. Williams was seen as a real entertainer anytime someone would challenge him to a fight. Another tough kid from Wayburn, Saskatchewan, Williams threw down with the best of them, ending his career as the most penalized player in NHL history with 3, 966 minutes. Oh and as for how many fights he had? Try, 246 times.

Bob Probert

The greatest fighter in the history of the National Hockey League, Bob Probert was and still is in a class of his own. He is seen as the most skilled fighter of his day, that even legend on this list, John Ferguson, said that he was nowhere near the level of fighter Probert was. His iconic battles with Tie Domi and Joey Kocur, just to name a few, made Probert a household name. Fifth all-time on the penalty docket and 230 fights under his belt, nothing else needs to be debated that Probert will go down as the king of fighting.

University of Tennessee chancellor Beverly Davenport has been fired by Dr. Joe DiPietro after the controversial hiring of John Currie as athletic director and, pending his firing this past December, the hiring of Phillip Fulmer in the position.

What happened?

Sportstalk host Jimmy Hyams helped break the news on Twitter:

“BREAKING NEWS: Sources: UT chancellor Beverly Davenport has been fired by Dr. Joe DiPietro. She was hired Dec. 15, effective Feb. 15. She made the controversial hire of John Currie as athletic director, then fired him Dec. 1 and hired Phillip Fulmer as AD.”

As he continued the story on his official Twitter account, he added that Davenport was the first woman to lead the school and been hired by DiPietro in the first place.

“Davenport, 63, was the first woman to lead UT Knoxville. She was hired at DiPietro’s recommendation. She served as interim president at the University of Cincinnati before being hired by UT. Her base pay: $595,000 with additional compensation.”

“Davenport was hired Dec. 15, 2016, came on board Feb. 15, 2017.”

According to SEC Country, during the time the news came to light, the school has not yet confirmed Davenport’s dismissal from the school, adding that the nature or reason for any potential firing is unclear.

The Tennesseean later confirmed the news, even publishing the full text of Davenport’s termination letter, which was signed by President Joseph A. DiPietro himself:

“I have decided that it is in the best interest of The University of Tennessee to change the leadership of our flagship campus and terminate your appointment as Chancellor of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.”

“Your performance evaluation for Calendar Year 2017, a copy of which is being provided to you under separate cover, describes numerous areas of unsatisfactory performance. In several areas, even after I raised concerns early in your tenure and addressed them multiple times since then, you have been either unwilling or unable to improve, including”

The letter added that, while terminated from her position of chancellor, she will stay at the school as a professor, with a significant pay-cut:

“Effective July 1, 2018, in accordance with the terms of your appointment letter dated December 6, 2016, your appointment will be converted from your current administrative appointment as Chancellor to your full-time faculty appointment as Professor, with tenure, in the School of Communication Studies. As approved by the Board of Trustees, your compensation as Professor will be $438,750.00 (which is 75% of your initial base salary as Chancellor of $585,000.00) for four years. Beginning with the fifth year, your compensation in your faculty appointment will be adjusted to the average base salary of full professors in the department. Effective immediately, and until June 30, 2018, you will be placed on administrative leave with pay.”

“Obviously, this is not where either of us hoped we would be when I hired you. Personally, I am disappointed that this action is necessary, but as President it is my duty to make decisions that are in the best interest of The University of Tennessee. I wish you the best as you return to the faculty.”

Who is Beverly Davenport?

As mentioned above, Davenport was the first woman chancellor for the University of Tennesee, Knoxville.

Before serving as the University of Tennessee chancellor, Davenport served as the 29th President at the University of Cincinnati. Beforehand, she served as the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost for three years.

Prior to this, she also served as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at Purdue University, a senior fellow at Virginia Tech, a divisional dean for the social sciences at the University of Kansas, and chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Kentucky.

Ty Cobb Net Worth 2018: How Much Is The Attorney Worth?

Ty Cobb is an American lawyer. No, he doesn’t play baseball, nor was he part of the first class of inductees into the Hall of Fame. He is, however, a distant descendant of the late MLB great with the same name.

Attorney Cobb is an experienced lawyer with a long track record of defending corruption cases and white-collar crime. He was a partner at Hogan Lovells in Washington, D.C. until July 2017, when he joined the Trump administration’s legal team. He joined the president’s special counsel, serving as part of the legal team that is handling the ongoing Russian investigation. In May 2018, Cobb announced he plans on leaving the White House and his position at the end of the month.

Ty Cobb Net Worth As Of 2018: $25 Million

When Cobb was brought on to Trump’s legal team he was given a salary of $179,000 – a far drop from what he was making at Hogan Lovells as one of their top corruption lawyers. Let’s take a look back at how this non-baseball playing Cobb made it to the White House.

Early Life

Instagram Photo

Cobb, born in 1950, is the son of Grover C. Cobb, a Kansas radio station owner who was senior executive vice president of the National Association of Broadcasters. He spent his childhood in rural Kansas, before receiving his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and his J.D. from Georgetown Law Schoool.

1976-1988

Cobb served as a law clerk for a federal judge, and then in the U.S. Attorney’s office in Baltimore as chief of the criminal section and head of the region’s drug enforcement and organized crime task force. In 1986, he joined the Baltimore law firm Miles and Stockbridge. Two years later, he joined Hogan & Hartson, which became Hogan Lovells.

1988-2016

Throughout the 90s and into the 2000s, Cobb made a name for himself as one of Hogan Lovells’ top corruption lawyers. In the 90s, he served as special trial counsel during an independent investigation of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Cobb successfully defended Hudson Foods against allegations that its executives lied to investigators after a recall of beef tainted with E. coli. The executives were acquitted on all charges. Other high-profile clients have included John Huang, Mary McCarthy, AIG, Office Depot, and IBM.

2017-Present

Instagram Photo

In July 2017, Cobb joined the White House to manage matters related to the ongoing investigations into Russian election interference. Up until his departure in May 2018, Cobb was part of the White House internal legal team and reported directly to President Trump. Cobb said that he accepted the White House assignment because “it was an impossible task with a deadline.” He elaborated further that he had “rocks in his head and steel balls.” Cobb was recommended to Trump by John Dowd, who was a member of his private legal team.

2018’s Fan Favorite NFL Draft Pick: Shaquem Griffin

$
0
0

He lost his left hand when he was four years old. His team was “robbed” of a national championship. At first, he wasn’t even invited to the NFL Combine. But time and time again, Shaquem Griffin has proved everyone wrong. He had 12 tackles, including 1.5 sacks in the Peach Bowl against Auburn. He ran a 4.38 40 yard dash at the Combine. Now, he has a chance to shine with the Seattle Seahawks, who selected him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Instagram Photo

This pick is special for so many reasons, but none more touching than family. Shaquem’s twin brother, Shaquill, was a third-round pick of the Seahawks in 2017. Not only are the brothers on the same team again, but they have a chance to shine together. Shaquill is currently listed as the number one cornerback on the roster after the Seahawks parted way with All-Pro Richard Sherman. Shaquem might not get a chance to start right away, but as any college football fan knows, he can prove us all wrong. The Seahawks might need some pass rushing depth, and Shaquem just might be the guy to help. If he isn’t able to get on the field a lot on defense, he will definitely be able to wow people as a gunner on special teams. His speed and strength give him the potential to be a Pro Bowler as a special teamer.

Instagram Photo

The Seahawks might have gotten rid of a lot of key players this offseason, like Richard Sherman and Michael Bennett, but they’ve definitely brought in a fan favorite. While he might not be on the field a lot next season, expect his jersey to be among the top sellers. The Seahawks did a great thing by giving Shaquem a chance, and by pairing him with his twin brother, it makes the story that much more impressive. Be sure to keep your eye out for the Griffin brothers this year as they ball out in 2018.
