The 5 Things New Yorkers Learn About Boston When They Visit For The First Time

$

As a proud New Yorker and New Jerseyan, viewing Boston as a bitter rival is essentially in my blood. Whether it be Yankees-Sox, Mets-Sox (hello, 1986), Jets-Patriots (f*ck you, Bill Belichick),  or Giants-Patriots (hello, 2007 & 2011), family, friends and loved ones of mine have loathed Boston, their teams, and their fans for the entirety of my life.

However, outside of their annoyingly successful sports teams, everything I’ve ever heard about Boston has been overwhelmingly positive. Whether it be about the food, the community, the Marathon, Fenway Park– everything I’ve ever heard about Boston, whether it be from residents or tourist — has been nothing short of spectacular. So when the nice folks over at Gillette offered me a chance to fly up for a couple days to see the city and take in a Yankees vs Red Sox game at Fenway, I jumped at the opportunity.

Now, it’s important to remember that I was only in Boston for about 30 hours and the weather wasn’t all that friendly for the time of year. Were there other areas of the city that I never saw that likely represent the more authentic side of Bean Town? Absolutely. But we’re here to talk about Boston and the first things I noticed about the historic city from an outsider’s point-of-view.

So, with that in mind, these are the five things this New Yorker learned about Boston while visiting for the first time.

Are cities allowed to be this clean?

The first thing I noticed upon touching down in Boston was how damn clean the city is.

Growing up in New Jersey and New York City, cleanliness is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when talking about those areas. Maybe this is the fault of New York City itself (which, according to my parents, has radically cleaned itself up over the last 30 years but is still a shithole nonetheless) but I half expect all cities to have a certain level of filth built in.

But, nope, not Boston. There was no pervasive smell of shit, no garbage bags lining the streets, no construction sites every other block — the city looks like it gets a nightly cleaning by every fraternity pledge in the city.

Zombie apocalypse-levels of quiet

Once I arrived at my hotel (the Boston Park Plaza, it was gorgeous, so shout out to them & Gillette), I had a couple of hours to kill before we headed to Fenway, so I decided to stroll around the area for a bit to find somewhere to grab a bite. After I wrapped my head around the notion that cities could, in fact, be clean, I noticed how quiet it was … almost too quiet.

No bicycle bells warning clueless pedestrians, no impatient cab drivers honking at the car in front of them, no crackheads arguing on the corner: I felt like I was walking through a city that had been wiped out by a zombie infection — that’s how quiet it was.

Fenway Park, on the other hand, was a different story.

Everyone doesn’t sound like Ben Affleck in The Town.

This one surprised me the most, as I expected everyone to sound like Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting and Ben Affleck in The Town. Now, while I was mostly at Fenway Park and the business area of Boston (meaning there were likely mostly tourists around me), the lack of Boston accents I encountered was wildly disappointing, to say the least. However, maybe that’s on me for expecting Boston to be like Ben Affleck’s movie version of it.

The only true Boston accent I encountered on my travels was at lunch before we left for the airport. We went to Atlantic Fish Company on Boylston Street and our waiter was like a supporting character ripped out of The Departed. Hearing him offer us their famous “Clam Chowduuh” in that patented Boston accent made the entire trip worthwhile.

The hype about their Lobster Roll is real AF

Speaking of Atlantic Fish Company, I had a Lobster Roll for lunch, and, well, sheeeeesh. I’m getting the itis just thinking about it. Really, the seafood, in general, was the best I ever had: calamari, oysters, shrimp, lobster — something about their seafood is just a cut above New York City’s. Then again, I’m no seafood expert and was prettttyyy baked on my pre-flight brownie when we went out to lunch, so take kindly take my culinary analysis with a grain of salt.

It’s easy to see why people are so proud of being from Bostom

All this said, I absolutely loved Boston. Despite the unseasonably cool weather that was sweeping the Northeast at the time of my visit, I could immediately tell why people loved the city so much. The streets are clean, the air is fresh, the seafood is excellent, but most importantly, the world-famous sense of togetherness and community was clear.

As a guy who is wildly proud of being from New York City, I respect the hell out of how much Bostonians love being from Boston and I can’t wait to go back because of it.

Desiree Linden Photos: Full Story & Must-See Details

Despite having to contend with wind and rain impacting the area, Desiree Linden became the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon since 1985. Ultimately finishing 26 miles in New England, her time is currently set at around 2:39:53, beating Ethiopian runner Mamitu Daska and Kenyan runner Gladys Chesir. Despite just making this milestone, she already had four previous Top 10 finishes in the Maraton, as well as just missing the top place by two seconds in 2011.

What happened?

On TwitterSports Illustrated writer Chris Chavez proclaimed Linden’s win by announcing “Drought Over,” possibly a play both on the weather impacting the area at the time and Linden’s milestone win, as well as announcing Linden’s time:

“Desiree Linden becomes the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years. Takes the victory in 2:39:54”

According to WMUR, other notable winners include Yuki Kawauchi of Japan, who won the men’s race, and Russian-born Tatyana McFadden from Maryland, who won the women’s wheelchair race, also winning this year’s women’s wheelchair race at the Chicago Marathon.

Who is Desiree Linden?

A native of California, Linden, who is also known by the aliases “Des” and “Desi,” has been a runner since high school where she ran track and cross country, later going on to Arizona State University, where she was a two-time All-American in track and cross country, as well as a psychology major. According to her official bio from the school, where she was identified by her maiden name, Desiree Nicole Davila, she earned her first All-America honors in 2003.

While she only recently became the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon since 1985, she is hardly a novice when it comes to running. According to Yahoo Sports, she previously had four Top 10 finishes in the Marathon; in 2011, she had also come close to winning the Boston Marathon, only losing by two seconds.

WWE Superstar Shake-Up 2018: Five WWE SmackDown Stars Who Must Go To Raw

The WWE Superstar Shake-up will likely be full of surprises that could forever change the landscape of Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live. Tonight, we’ll see a select group of SmackDown superstars will make their way over to Raw. Some will see their careers take off while others will be lost in the shuffle following this year’s Shake-up.

Which SmackDown Live superstars will be heading over to the red brand? That’s a bit difficult to predict for the most part. But then there are some superstars will absolutely need to switch brands.

Here are the 5 WWE SmackDown Live stars will must go to Monday Night Raw

5. Baron Corbin

Instagram Photo

“The Lone Wolf” Baron Corbin really made a name for himself on SmackDown. In one year, he was able to become Mr. Money In The Bank and the WWE United States Champion. That being said, Corbin has really become stale lately and has been trending water on the blue brand in 2018. Corbin has done next to nothing this year and really needs to rejuvenate a stale character that has faded to the background of the roster. If Corbin is traded over to Raw, he could easily insert himself into the Intercontinental Championship picture.

4. Becky Lynch

Instagram Photo

Much like Corbin, Becky Lynch has become an afterthought in 2018. She really hasn’t done much since losing the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship to Alexa Bliss in December 2016. A switch over to Monday Night Raw might relight the flame that made this “Irish Lass Kicker” straight fire every time she stepped into the ring. Lynch will also need to switch up her character once she arrives on Raw. A heel turn may gain the attention of fans. She can piss off the fans by attacking the lovable Bayley. Lynch vs. Bayley would definitely be a well-received feud on Monday nights.

3. Tye Dillinger

Instagram Photo

“The Perfect 10” Tye Dillinger has tons of potential that is being wasted on Tuesday nights. He has been lost in the shuffle on the blue brand; falling to the background behind characters like Jinder Mahal, Bobby Roode, and Randy Orton. Considering Raw has a three-hour time slot compared to SmackDown Live‘s two-hour slot, Tye may find more air time to showoff his skills on Monday nights.

2. Rusev

Instagram Photo

Rusev may be one of the most well-received superstars in the entire WWE. Therefore, his talent should be highlight on WWE’s flagship show, Monday Night Raw. Rusev hasn’t been properly utilized on SmackDown. If he isn’t challenging AJ Styles for the WWE Championship then he really shouldn’t be on the brand. Rusev is sure to be welcomed with open arms on Raw. A feud with Seth Rollins over the Intercontinental Championship would likely be inevitable if he switches brands. Aiden English would be an added bonus if he’s drafted to Raw alongside “The Bulgarian Brute.”

1. Daniel Bryan

Instagram Photo

The in-ring return of Daniel Bryan might be the biggest comeback story of 2018. SmackDown Live is a phenomenal show and all, but Bryan’s return would be given a greater spotlight on WWE’s flagship show. Bryan would gain the most exposure over on Raw, considering the show is much more well-known and offers the most amount of air time. A brand switch for Daniel Bryan would drastically change the landscape of the main event scene. A showdown between Bryan and WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar would be inevitable.

Hottest Girls Of Coachella 2018: Weekend One

Weekend one of 2018 Coachella is in the books and what a weekend it was. People continue to rave about Beyonce’s performance, with many saying she stole the weekend. DJ Khaled even renamed the festival “Beychella” after she set the stage on fire. Cardi B also put on quite the performance all while rocking her baby bump. Eminem closed out the weekend by bringing out 50 Cent and Dr. Dre during his set.

While the above performers were setting the stage on fire the festival’s crowd was littered with girls setting the grounds on fire. Coachella has always been known for its women guests dressing to impress. This year was no different.

Olivia Culpo and Alessandra Ambrosio did their thing as usual. We even had Paris Hilton taking us back in time looking like her “One Night in Paris” days; she has really been on the comeback trail as of late. Two sisters who made a simmering hot impression were fashion bloggers Sophie Bickley and Charlotte Bickley.

Instagram Photo

They did not hold back this weekend.

Those two weren’t the only ones from the fashion blogging sphere who had us picking our jaws up from the ground. Danielle Bernstein showed us that she not only has an eye for fashion but the body to pull it off.

This was just the first weekend, and I’m sure it will only be heating up as Coachella continues to bring out the best of the best.

Coachella 2018: Eminem Brings Out Dr. Dre & 50 Cent

Ah, yes Coachella. The annual music and arts festival in California is known for a few things: beautiful celebrities, drugs, and hella good performances. It’s not even over, but Coachella 2018 has already caused an unbelievable stir online.

Most people are focused on Beyonce and her performance, with good reason. She reunited with Destiny’s Child, performed all the hits you remember from your middle and high school dances. Oh, she also brought out her husband, which was nice I think. He’s a relatively unknown rapper named Jay-Z, you may have heard of him.

But anyway, following hot on the heels of Queen Bey, was Slim Shady himself, Eminem. The rapper is a legend, no one is disputing that. His albums Infinite, The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, and The Eminem Show are certified hip-hop classics.

However, his most recent work is contentious at best. Some like it, praising his raw emotion and talking about his struggles with substance abuse, but some people long for the days of old Eminem when he was rapping about killing people. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

On April 15th, Eminem performed as one of the headliners for Coachella 2018. In addition to putting on a hell of a setlist, including hits like “My Name Is,” “Stan,” & “Lose Yourself,” Shady brought out his mentor Dr. Dre, as well as his mentee, 50 Cent.

Anytime Eminem and Dr. Dre get back together, whether it be in the studio or on stage, you know it’s gonna be something special. The two legends always know how to bring the heat, and they did what they do best at Coachella this year.

Shady also brought out the guy whose career he helped build–50 Cent. Eminem and 50 have made appearances on each other’s songs for years, but one of, if the not THE best, collaborations they did was on 50’s debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin’. Lucky for us, they performed it at Coachella.

Coachella isn’t over yet, and if the first weekend is any indication, I think we’re in for an unforgettable festival.

Boston Marathon 2018: Route, Course Map & Must-See Details

Officially starting at 9:00 a.m., the 2018 Boston Marathon is underway. This year marks the 122nd running of this deeply historic race and marks the fifth anniversary of the tragic Boston Marathon bombing. Runners from around the world come to compete against one another to see who can finish those 26.2 miles first.

The route, starting on Main Street in Hopkinton, will travel through several different towns and cities until reaching its finishing point in the heart of Boston. Once the runners enter Boston, they will run through some of Boston’s most historic areas and cross the finish line on Boylston Street near the John Hancock Tower in Copley Square. With the blazing hot Red Sox playing their traditional day game, Boston is surely going to be crowded

If you’re planning to watch the race in person, but don’t want to be in Boston, I’d recommend parking up near Heartbreak Hill. Three-quarters of the way into their race, runners must climb Heartbreak Hill. According to runningworld.com, compared to other elevation changes in other marathons, the elevation change is relatively tame at 91 feet, but the 3.3% grade makes it the steepest.

The full list of road closures for the race can be found here.

NHL Playoffs 2018: Five Things We’ve Learned So Far

$

0

It’s only been six days into the chase for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but every game so far has had a bunch of excitement and drama. That excitement and drama have fans of teams in the postseason on the edge of their seat from puck drop to the final buzzer. The fun part is, it’s only the beginning. But as each series enters the third or fourth game tonight or tomorrow, several things have come to light about where the rest of the playoffs might be headed. Below are the five most notable.

1. The Top Teams Flexing Their Muscle

Instagram Photo

Ever since the playoffs began last weekend, there’s been some clarity as to why they have favorites, and why they have so-called underdogs. The Tampa Bay Lightning, who thought they were going to be in a non-stop fight with a pesky New Jersey Devils squad, have run over them the first two games. Head Coach Jon Cooper’s club showed that their depth is incredible and that they are willing to physically overwhelm the Devils — throwing hits at every possible chance they could get. The Bolts have also proved that if you allow them opportunity after opportunity, they are going to eventually pounce and take away any hope from the opposition.

In addition to the Lightning, the defending Western Conference Champions, the Nashville Predators, have exhibited why they are just plain better than the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs have given the Preds all they can handle, but every time the Predators have needed to answer, they’ve done it. In all three facets of the game, when Colorado seems to be changing the momentum, Nashville has found ways to turn the tide (whether a big save or goal) and steal all of the confidence the Avs began to build.

The Vegas Golden Knights continue to write the greatest story in ages. They’re up 3-0 in their series. While their series with the LA Kings has been the most competitive of the first round so far, Vegas fast and relentless will have inundated the Kings. Furthermore, Vegas’s ability to have several players come up clutch in more than one situation have validated that they deserve to be in the position they currently stand.

2. Blowouts And Lots of Them

Instagram Photo

They say the playoffs in any sport, the intensity ratchets up and the games are a lot closer than how they unfold in the regular season. The NHL must have missed the message through these first few days of their postseason. So far in the playoffs, there seem to be one or even two blowouts on a nightly basis.

I mean, last Wednesday the Penguins smacked the Flyers 7-0. That basically set the tone. Philly would return the favor, winning game two in Pittsburgh 5-1. And then Pittsburgh followed up that performance, with a 5-1 beating of the Flyers yesterday afternoon.

The Bruins have assaulted the Maple Leafs in their first two games, 5-1 and 7-3.  In the Tampa Bay and New Jersey series, the games are a lot closer than the score indicates, but the Lightning has outscored the Devils 10-5. Games two and three in the Jets-Wild series, the scores — 4-1 and 6-2 — tell the story that the games were over by the time the third period rolled around. If this is how it’s going to be throughout the playoffs (hopefully not), we’re in for some short nights and dull games.

3. Home Ice Doesn’t Matter

Instagram Photo

“It’s not a series until the road team wins one.” If you think that quote has no meaning through the first few nights of the postseason, you’re dead wrong. For years now, the adage that a team having home ice gives them a significant advantage has decreased dramatically.

Teams that had home ice — Pittsburgh, Washington, Philadelphia, and Anaheim — all saw that there’s a lot more to the playoffs than getting those first two games at home. Pittsburgh (above) got throttled by the Flyers in game two, costing them a chance at a possible 2-0 series lead. The Capitals, oh the Capitals, had two two-goal leads against the Blue Jackets in both games one and two and lost both in overtime. Anaheim didn’t realize how aggressive the San Jose Sharks were as a team. They lost both games at Honda Center, by a combined score of 6-2, including being shutout 3-0 in game one.

Even Sunday, the Flyers returned home to a raucous Wells Fargo Center after a 5-1 beatdown of the Pens Friday night. They allowed Sidney Crosby to have a four-point game and were pasted by the Pens 5-1. The blowouts have come at an increased rate, something not many usually expect in the postseason.

4. Bet The House On Vegas

Instagram Photo

Before the playoffs began, a lot of fans and critics were questioning how the Vegas Golden Knights would fare in their first playoff go-around. Safe to say, they’ve been pretty steady. Ok, how about more like, unbelievable.

In game one, even with the nerves and the rowdiness of T Mobile Arena, the Golden Knights won their first playoff game in franchise history on the back of Shea Theodore goal in the first period, and 30 save shutout for Marc-Andre Fleury. Game two was one for the ages. Vegas and LA went stride for stride deep into the late night. In the second overtime, the Knights finally broke the stalemate when Erik Haula made a dazzling play to beat Jonathan Quick, giving them a surprising 2-0 lead in the series.

Last night, the Golden Knights once again made waves. Down 1-0 in early in the third, they finally hit paydirt. Cody Eakin would tie the game, leading to a great rest of the third. With just under six minutes to play, James Neal put Vegas on and then not even 25 seconds later, William Karlsson doubled the lead. Vegas won 3-2, and no have a 3-0 stranglehold on the series. Stunning doesn’t even describe what the Golden Knights have accomplished in round one.

5. Nothing Beats O.T.

Instagram Photo

Playoff hockey, like I said earlier, is full of drama and excitement. But overtime in the playoffs is a whole other experience. There have been only three games so far in the first round that have needed more than 60 minutes to decide a winner. Each of those overtime-filled affairs has been as exhilarating as any game in the opening round.

The fact that there got to be a double-overtime game in Vegas on Friday night was fantastic. With that wild atmosphere, the possibility of Vegas going up 2-0 or the Kings stealing home-ice, and the fact that it was a Friday, all made for a beautiful scenario for the game and the fans. Vegas winning in the second extra frame made the night even more satisfying. Even more fitting than that double-overtime game, the first two games of the Columbus Blue Jackets-Washington Capitals series having to be decided in the extra session.

Games one and two of Columbus and Washington were offensive clinics and didn’t disappoint. And with Columbus finding a way to snatch both games on the Caps home ice in OT, was great for headlines. As the first round continues, I hope for more overtime games before round one ends. We’ve only gotten a few, but the more that happens, the more intriguing the playoffs become.

Deadpool 2 Villain: Is Cable Really The Bad Guy?

$

0

Deadpool 2 / Marvel Comics

The Deadpool 2 cast and crew have so far held their cards incredibly close to their chests. Less than a month away from release only the barest plot details have been revealed, and the presence of certain characters or actors in the film have only been revealed through set leaks and glimpses in trailers. Even the full title is unknown (though the repetition of a certain phrase throughout promotional material may offer a clue). With all the unknowns it’s only fitting that another vital part of the movie is secret: the primary villain. While so far the time-traveling Cable seems to hold that role his comic background, the aforementioned caginess of the DP 2 team and the time-honored superhero plot point of misunderstandings leading to big blow-out fights make this a hard pill to swallow. So who is the villain really? Here are four major possibilities.

Stryfe

Because being the time-displaced child of prominent X-Men Cyclops and Jean Grey destined to be a post-apocalyptic mutant messiah isn’t complicated enough, Cable naturally has an evil clone. Created in case baby Cable succumbed to the techno-organic virus that threatened to turn his entire body to metal, the healthy clone was kidnapped and raised by the villain Apocalypse. The clone, codenamed Stryfe, believed he was the true Nathan Summers and has been one of Cable’s most persistent and powerful enemies.

Cable and Stryfe share the same abilities (and glowing eye)

It’s not out of the question that he could be manipulating events to make Cable think he has to kill the mutant child (played by Julian Dennison) we see in the trailer, or even just make Deadpool believe that’s what he’s trying to do.

Mister Sinister

Clones are an essential part of Cable’s backstory even before Stryfe. The evil scientist Nathaniel Essex (aka Mister Sinister), obsessed with Cyclops’s genetic potential, cloned the seemingly deceased Jean Grey with the hopes of getting their powerful and genetically gifted progeny. The clone, Madelyne Pryor, eventually married Cyclops and gave birth to the bouncing baby Cable. Sinister hoped that the child would grow up to be powerful enough to destroy his master the immortal mutant Apocalypse and free the scientist from his servitude. This only led to the baby getting infected with a techno-organic virus that threatened to kill him, and required the X-Men to send him to the future to save his life and fulfill a mysterious, messianic destiny.

Sinister has a complicated history with the X-Men film franchise, but it could finally be his time to shine. With his obsession with Cable’s genetics and desire to use him to his own ends, Sinister is an obvious choice for any villain in Cable related media. An expert in behind the scenes manipulation and long-term planning the scientist could easily pit Cable against potential allies such as Deadpool; perhaps even with the intention of gaining access to the genes of Dennison’s character.

Nimrod/Bastion

Sentinel’s have been a major part of the X-Men mythos almost since the aerie’s inception in the 60’s. Initially, just giant and clumsy robots, as the years have passed they have gotten more and more powerful. In alternate and potential futures such as the Days of Future Past timeline they’ve often become intelligent and powerful enough to take over the world, placing not only mutants but super-powered beings of all sorts into concentration camps. One figure that is prominently displayed in such futures is the super-advanced, time-traveling  Sentinel Nimrod.

Future Sentinel from X-Men: Days of Future Past

Nimrod has been a major villain in both future and present. In one storyline involving Cable and a mysterious mutant child (sound familiar?) he is the main antagonist. Hiding behind a plethora of lesser X-Men villains and in a more advanced form named ‘Bastion’, his actions result in the death’s of Nightcrawler and Cable before he is finally defeated.

Apocalypse

Apocalypse is undeniably one of the most powerful and dangerous beings in the Marvel universe. The first known mutant to exist, Apocalypse enhanced his abilities and powers with salvaged Celestial technology he discovered in Egypt, making himself a virtual god. He continually sought to subjugate the human race under his twisted understanding of the phrase ‘suvival of the fittest.’ Cable’s entire purpose in life is to defeat him and prevent the dystopian Apocalypse-dominated world he was raised in thousands of years in the future.

Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

As Apocalypse already appeared in a titular X-Men film in 2016 as the primary antagonist it’s unlikely that he’ll make a return appearance. But with his role in Cable’s backstory, the wackiness of any media involving Deadpool, and the convoluted mess that is the X-Men franchise, anything is possible (especially with a little time travel!)

With Deadpool you never know what you’re going to get. One or all of these characters could get at least a reference, or none of them. As usual, we’re just going to have to wait and see!

Deadpool 2 premieres May 18. It’s directed by David Leitch (John Wick) and stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character.

Tribeca Film Festival 2018

In a year that entertainment confronted gender bias, racial stereotypes, sexual harassment, and LGBTQ love stories, it seems only fitting that this year’s Tribeca Film Festival offers up the same caliber of storytelling through masterful works of art that captivate the senses and hold on to your soul. The program for Tribeca is as followed:

Our feature film lineup for the 17th annual Tribeca Film Festival champions the discovery of emerging voices and the celebration of new work from established filmmaking talent. This year, we’re closing the festival with the world premiere of The Fourth Estate, from Oscar®-nominated director Liz Garbus, which follows the New York Times‘ coverage of the Trump administration’s first year. Our centerpiece gala is the world premiere of Drake Doremus’ sci-fi romance Zoe, starring Ewan McGregor, Léa Seydoux, Rashida Jones, and Theo James. The 2018 Tribeca Film Festival takes place April 18th to the 29th.

The 2018 feature film program includes 96 films from 103 filmmakers. Of the 96 films, 46% of them are directed by women, the highest percentage in our festival’s history. The lineup includes 74 world premieres, 6 international premieres, 9 North American premieres, 3 U.S. premieres, and 4 New York premieres from 30 countries. This year’s program includes 46 first time filmmakers, with 18 directors returning to the festival with their latest feature film projects. Tribeca’s 2018 slate was programmed from more than 8,789 total submissions.

“We are proud to present a lineup that celebrates American diversity and welcomes new international voices in a time of cultural and social activism,” said Paula Weinstein, Executive Vice President of Tribeca Enterprises. “Our films succeed in being both entertaining and illuminating which is what you desire from great storytellers.”

Tribeca Film Festival 2018 Details

Dates: Wednesday, April 18 – April 29, 2018
Tickets: Tickets are already available now via Tribeca’s website.
Location: New York City, NY

Here is your wonderful breakdown of the must-see films at Tribeca. Per IndieWire:

“Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda”

Tribeca Film Festival

One of the most influential, prolific, and flat-out enjoyable composers of the last 30 years, Ryuichi Sakamoto exploded onto the scene by writing unforgettable scores for films like “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” and “The Last Emperor,” and his work has only grown increasingly instrumental (ha) to the movie world since. When Sakamoto was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, he decided to devote whatever time he had left to an album that could serve as his legacy. Lucky for us, he’s still alive and going strong. Luckier still, Stephen Nomura Schible was there to capture the recording process on camera, following Sakamoto as he muses about life, records ambient noise around the ruins of Fukushima, and reconsiders to the sounds that have reverberated through his life. The result is a portrait of an artist that’s nearly as powerful and necessary as the artist himself.

“The Rachel Divide”

THE RACHEL DIVIDE/Netflix.

Tribeca has often programmed timely documentaries that chronicle ripped-from-the-headlines events, often breeding engaging screenings and wild Q&A events. This year, Laura Brownson’s latest feature-length doc seems poised to be the talked-about film at the festival, providing an exclusive look at the current life of Rachel Dolezal, who made waves when she was revealed to be a white woman who had long posed (or pretended? or thought she actually was?) a black woman. Brownson was given unique access to Dolezal and her family, which sounds like a crazy companion piece to Ijeoma Oluo’s incendiary interview with Dolezal from 2017. Netflix will release the film on April 27, but it’s certain to turn some heads at Tribeca

“The Party’s Just Beginning”

Tribeca Film Festival

Beloved superstar Karen Gillan — of such huge properties as “Doctor Who,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the reignited “Jumanji” franchise — makes the jump to directing with a personal story about her own Scottish hometown. Divided into three interlocking chapters, the film follows Liusaidh (Gillan) as she attempts to heal up from a terrible tragedy, mainly by making terrible decisions. As she skates through nights at the pub and dancing around her pain while living with her concerned parents, Liusaidh is forced to grapple with the messiness of life through some happy chances, including a romance with a new guy (Lee Pace) and a telephonic connection with a stranger.

“Little Woods”

Tribeca Film Festival

Tessa Thompson fever has taken over the country, and we are here for it. Whether she’s flirting with Janelle Monáe in her latest eye-popping music video, or embracing the Shimmer with an eerie tranquility in “Annihilation,” Thompson has established herself as one of the most exciting actresses working today. Four years after “Dear White People,” it’s high time she lead her own film again, and for that honor she has chosen “Little Woods.” Thompson plays Ollie, a 21st century Robin Hood who smuggles affordable medication from Canada to the low-income residents of Little Woods, North Dakota. Pocketing some profits on the side, Ollie plans to go legitimate once she’s caught and put on probation. When her mother dies, she’s pulled back into the life by her estranged sister, played by the always-enjoyable Lily James. The feature debut of writer-director Nia DaCosta, the film promises a timely take on the opioid crisis led by two dynamic rising talents.

“Sunday’s Illness”

Tribeca Film Festival

One of the major discoveries of the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival — but woefully under-celebrated there — Spanish director Ramon Salazar Hoogers explores the life of a successful woman (Susi Sanchez) haunted by a dark secret: she had a child, ages ago, whom she abandoned. In the midst of a fancy dinner for friends, her daughter turns up among the catering staff, in an emotional showdown that sets up the bulk of the movie’s setting. The two women commit to spending 10 days together for parting ways for good. It’s the ideal setting for an emotional two-hander that should Hoogers’ stature as a major filmmaker

MLB Power Rankings Updated: Who Is Rising? Who Is Falling?

$

Since last weeks first power rankings of the season, we have seen some reshuffling in the top ten. The number one spot continues to stay the same with the sizzling hot Red Sox off to the best start in baseball. Even with Boston losing shortstop Xander Bogaerts to injury (ankle) they have not slowed down. This Red Sox team looks scary good and manager Alex Cora in his first year as a manager seems like a seasoned vet. Cora’s former organization, the Houston Astros, have slipped behind the surging L.A. Angels. The combination of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani looks deadly. Trout has rebounded from a somewhat slow start to the season, now with six home runs and 13 RBI.

The top two teams are on a collision course starting Tuesday with Boston leaving the cold rainy northeast and heading cross country for a three-game series in L.A. The winner of that could very well be sitting atop the rankings next week.

I will remind you how the rankings are decided. For these power rankings, I will mostly rely on the actual results of what has occurred. Also, team expectations and long-term sustainability will play a slight factor as well. So, let’s see how things have changed.

Nikki Bella, real name Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace, is an American professional wrestler, model, actress, and businesswoman currently working for WWE. She’s been with the company since 2007, when she was signed to a developmental contract and quickly worked her way up the ranks, fighting alongside her sister Brie Bella.

Bella was born in San Diego, California, and was raised on a farm outside Phoenix, Arizona. She had a passion for soccer when she was young, attending Grossmont College in San Diego. She would eventually move to Los Angeles and work as a waitress as she began to look for an agent.

After getting signed by the WWE, she would start fighting for Florida Championship Wrestling, a then-WWE developmental league. She quickly proved her worth there, both as a wrestler and as a personality. Between matches, she owned the mic and also competed in bikini contests, a sure sign that you are…well, hot.

She was called up to the WWE itself in 2008, debuting on Smackdown. She’s seen a lot of success with the WWE, winning the WWE Divas Championship twice and is the longest reigning champion.

Outside the ring, Bella dated and became engaged to WWE superstar and actor John Cena. They were together for over six years before breaking up in 2018. They had also starred in the E! reality show Total Bellas.

We Need To Talk About John Cena’s Weird & Wonderful Instagram

$

This past weekend the WWE Universe was shocked to find out about the split of WWE power couple, Nikki Bella and John Cena. As sad as we are to hear about the duos parting of ways we will always be reminded about how wacky the two can be. Especially John Cena. Many wrestling fans follow the Face That Runs The Place on Instagram, 9.1 million in fact, to see his crazy posts. Sometimes it’s trolling an opponent, sometimes it’s a car he thinks is awesome, and sometimes it just makes no sense. Always presented with no explanation. Here is just a taste of the things you’ll see on the Instagram of the man you can’t see.

Stone Cold (insert name here)

Instagram Photo

A great series that Cena seems to be a fan of is taking the same photo of Stone Cold Steve Austin and photoshopping other people’s faces into them… why? Why not! No one is safe from the face theft. From his boss Stephanie McMahon to TV personalities like Stephen Colbert to musicians like Steven Tyler. It’s a funny but sometimes off-putting trend…

Undertaker Goading

Instagram Photo

Cena posted this recently when trying to goad the Phenom into a match. As we all know now, Cena got his match with the Deadman at Wrestlemania 34 but before we knew it was pretty funny to watch Cena troll the Undertaker like this.

Bob Ross and The Predator

Instagram Photo

This isn’t his only photo of the painter with the most calming voice of all time on his Instagram…but maybe the most interesting…

Leia on the Beach

Instagram Photo

Someone posting about Star Wars is ordinary. But this is an interesting choice of photos. Seems as normal as…. well as Vader standing on a beach.

Oh, Yeeeeah Brother!

Instagram Photo

A play off of the popular monicker used by Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage when addressing other people. It’s fitting to have the former Mega Powers photoshopped into this reimagining of the Coen’s Brothers classic.

Buried… or burned?

Instagram Photo

Speaking of photoshopping wrestlers into photos, this one is downright savage–no pun intended. Back when Baron Corbin had the Money in the Bank briefcase, Cena was his biggest troll. Even going so far as to laugh at the man in-ring when his cash in failed. He would also post this photo of Corbin… in a dumpster fire. Was Cena burying (keeping someone down the card) Corbin? Not sure, but how much has he done since?

 The Saints Downfall

Instagram Photo

After the crazy finish to this past years NFC Championship game, a last-minute win by the Minnesota Vikings, a slew of memes and trash talk surfaced. This may be my favorite though, a picture depicting a Stone Cold Stunner being the downfall of the Saints.

Go See Ferdinand… I Think

Instagram Photo

Cena likes using interesting photos to promote his matches and movies. Like this one to help promote the animated film Ferdinand in which Cena lends his voice to the titular character. That’s clear..right?

Pugs

Instagram Photo

If his Instagram is any indication, Cena really likes Pugs. Here is one picture of a pug he posted that encapsulates three things the man himself loves. Luxury, Wine, and pugs.

Literally All Of His Early Stuff

Instagram Photo

If you really deep dive his early stuff it gets bizarre. Especially without context. If we focused on just the early posts, this post would be far too long. Here is a taste but I urge you to go check it out yourself…

John Cena gives a lot of himself to the public. He is a cornerstone of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and regularly hosts the Kids Choice Awards. His upcoming movie Blockers also shows that he’s willing to dive into adult comedy as well. All of this while being a major representative for the WWE but it’s nice to have this little slice of his weird side. I highly suggest any WWE fan to give it a follow on Instagram

WWE Superstar Shakeup 2018 Rumors: Potential Spoilers For This Year’s Shake-Up

Excited about the 2018 WWE Superstar Shakeup? Wondering which wrestlers will switch brands from SmackDown Live to Monday Night Raw, and vis versa? According to a caller on Wrestling Observer Live, the WWE may have already spoiled what should have been huge surprises relating to the WWE Superstar Shake-up.

According to ever-developing rumor mill, titles will likely switch brands and the rosters will be altered significantly. The caller, on Wrestling Observer Live, claimed to have a WrestleMania program that listed certain superstars on brands that they currently aren’t on, indicating that these superstars are the ones who will switch brands during the Shake-up.

Here are the wrestlers rumored to change brands during the WWE Superstar Shake-up.

1. WWE Champion AJ Styles rumored to move from SmackDown to Raw

Instagram Photo

“The Phenomenal” AJ Styles moving from SmackDown to Raw would simply be ground-breaking. The caller claimed to see Styles featured as a member of the Monday Night Raw roster on a WrestleMania program. If this rumor turns out to be true Monday nights will become phenomenal.

2. Asuka rumored to move from Raw to SmackDown

Instagram Photo

“The Empress of Tomorrow” Asuka would make an excellent addition to the Monday Night Raw roster. If this rumor/spoiler turns out to be true then Carmella’s days as champion are numbered. Asuka’s arrival would change the landscape of the blue brand’s women’s division.

3. WWE United States Champion Jinder Mahal rumored to move from SmackDown to Raw

Instagram Photo

“The Modern Day Maharaja” Jinder Mahal may make Monday nights his new home. If he moves to Raw then they’ll be two mid-card titles on the red brand, which may mean that WWE Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins is heading over to SmackDown to level the playing field.

4. The New Day rumored to move from SmackDown to Raw

Instagram Photo

The New Day are first-ballot future WWE Hall of Famers. They’d make an excellent addition to any roster they find themselves on. But it looks like it may be time for The New Day to return home to Monday nights. Will Francesca 2 also be drafted? Stay tuned!

5. Finn Balor rumored to move from Raw to SmackDown

Instagram Photo

It’s pretty obvious that Finn Balor is in dire need of a change. If this rumor is correct then Balor will find a fresh start on the blue brand. “The Demon King” Balor could have excellent matches with nearly everyone on the brand. And considering that SmackDown is “the land of opportunity,” Balor will likely find himself high up on the card very soon once he makes the move.

6. Roman Reigns rumored to move from Raw to SmackDown

Instagram Photo

“The Big Dog” Roman Reigns may be on his way to “the land of opportunity.” Reigns has had difficulty rising to the top of the ranks over on Monday Night Raw, especially with “The Beast Incarnate” Brock Lesnar sitting atop the perch as champion. Maybe on the blue brand, Reigns will once again rise to the occasion and win his fourth world championship.

Video Of Cambridge Officers Arresting Black Harvard Student Allegedly On Drugs Goes Viral

Video police officers repeatedly striking Selorm Ohene, a black Harvard University student, has gone viral. In the footage, three Cambridge police officers and an MBTA Transit Police officer pin Ohene to the ground while arresting him near the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Waterhouse Street.

According to the police report, Ohene was naked at the time of the arrest and a woman who appeared to be Ohene’s acquaintance told responding officers that Ohene “may have been on drugs.” The police report says an officer struck Ohene five times in the torso during the arrest.

Marc C. McGovern, the Mayor of Cambridge’s mayor, called the “disturbing” while promising that the findings of their investigation would be made available to the public.

via Boston Globe:

In the video, shot by a bystander and released by police, Ohene is standing on the median of Massachusetts Avenue, surrounded by three officers, then turns and approaches one of them. An officer grabs Ohene’s legs from behind, knocking him forward into another officer. The three men fall to the pavement. The third officer helps pin Ohene to the ground.

Ohene can be heard on the video yelling, “Help me, Jesus! Help me, Jesus!” as he struggles with the officers. A fourth officer helps restrain Ohene, and one of the officers can be seen striking Ohene once, according to video released by police.

In a separate video of the incident, filmed from the opposite side of the street and obtained by the Globe Saturday night, an officer can be seen striking Ohene quickly four times while another officer grips the first officer’s belt.

Ohene, a native of Ghana, is a mathematics major at the historic Ivy League university.

The Boston Globe reports that the Cambridge Police Department last updated their use of force policy in 2011. Their policy allows officers to “use only that degree of force which is reasonably necessary to make an arrest, place someone in protective custody, bring an incident under control, or protect the lives of themselves or others.”

You can read the full statement from Mayor Marc C. McGovern below:

Top Four Player Debuts Of The 2018 NHL Playoffs

The 2018 NHL Playoffs got off to a wild start this week. Some of the most impressive plays and performances have come from the league’s young players, some of whom are playing in their first playoffs.

Here are the top players who made incredible debuts:

Evander Kane

Instagram Photo

Kane has proved he is in it to win it, with his speed, skill, and athletic ability busting at the seams during the opening game of playoffs week. Being that this is Evander’s first time in the playoffs, after being apart of the NHL for nine seasons. Kane really wanted to make his mark and show how much he earned this. After playing in nearly 600 games with the NHL so far, Evander can finally step on the playoff ice instead of watching it from home.

In Kane’s playoff debut he managed to make his mark on multiple occasions. He had three hits, blocked one shot and won a faceoff! He was on the ice for 18 minutes and scored two goals! Kane’s first goal took place during a power play against the Ducks. His second goal was made as he cut back across the ice after taking the puck from Joe Pavelski. Kane is the reason San Jose is leading the series with a 2-0 lead.

Taylor Hall

Instagram Photo

This has been a long time coming for Taylor Hall, 529 regular season games to be exact. Hall is the reason the Devils have made it to this post-season playoff spot. During the 2017-2018 regular season, he was a force to be reckoned with. Hall’s season included scoring 39 goals and averaging 93 points in 76 games. In game one of the playoffs against Tampa Bay, Taylor Hall was a hurricane.

At the midway point of game 1, the Devils were trailing behind at 3-0. Hall put a lot of pressure on himself during this game which ultimately led to their 5-2 lose. But it’s still early, with the help of Taylor Hall the Devils will definitely be able to turn this around.

Pierre-Luc Dubois

Instagram Photo

19-year-old Pierre finally found his drive, during Dubois’ 20th game of the regular season. That’s when Pierre really was able to come full circle as a player and showcase his skills. The Blue Jackets player scored 18 goals during the final 62 games of the regular season. Dubois averaged 44 points overall and played 18 minutes on the ice each night.

During Dubois’s playoff debut he had a primary assist on the Blue Jacket’s second goal of the game. Which tied the game allowing more time for the Blue Jackets to strategize. Dubois had two hits, blocked one shot and nearly played 24 minutes on the ice. This led the game into overtime. Pierre started the final play that helped teammate Artemi Panarin to score the game-winning goal.

Patrik Laine

Instagram Photo

Zach Parise’s 2-1 Minnesota Wild lead on the Winnipeg Jets, inspired Laine to take immediate action. Patrik grabbed the puck after a drop pass from Paul Stastny. He managed to score one goal against Minnesota goalie Devan Dubnyk. This brought the game back to even ground.

At only 19 years old Laine managed to tie his first playoff game. Patrik may have only scored one goal, but he helped contribute to Joe Morrow’s gaming winning one. Laine is definitely the one to watch during the playoffs with his 44 regular season goals, he’ll definitely be making his mark on the 2018 playoffs.

These four players will definitely be making their mark on the 2018 playoffs. I can’t wait which player helps their team end up on top as part of the final two!

Brock Lesnar Vs. Everyone: 5 People With Real-Life Problems With Brock

$

The Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar. A scary and imposing figure in Sports Entertainment. Not only is he a monster in the storytelling world of WWE, he can also destroy you in real life as he proved with his time with the UFC. He seems like the kind of guy you wouldn’t want to make angry, but that hasn’t stopped a few people from doing so. With reports of Lesnar having a fit at his boss, Vince McMahon, after his Wrestlemania 34 match, it’s hard to believe he won’t go after anyone in his way. Here are some people who got on the wrong side of the longest reigning Universal Champion.

Vince and Shane McMahon

Instagram Photo

As mentioned earlier reports are beginning to surface that when Lesnar came through Gorilla Position (the production area right behind the curtain at the top of the ramp) at Wrestlemania 34 he had a confrontation with WWE CEO Vince McMahon. Reports tell of a shouting match between McMahon and Lesnar so heated that McMahon’s son, Shane, got involved and into Lesnar’s face. Now is this part of a story? If not it is insane. Even though WWE is no stranger to storylines of people beating up their boss– going after them in real life is totally different. If it’s real then the McMahon’s must not have taken it to personally because he has resigned with the company. So alls well that ends well?

Chris Jericho

Instagram Photo

Chris Jericho is never one to back down from a real fight. This is the man who once took on Goldberg backstage in a shoot (real) fight when he heard that Goldberg was bad-mouthing him. So when the 2016 Summerslam massacre of Randy Orton at the hands of Brock Lesnar happened, Jericho was ready to defend his wrestling brethren. Angry at what he thought was a savage and uncalled for head injury that Lesnar caused on Orton, the much smaller man was ready to rumble. Luckily it was defused before it got out of control and Jericho was told it was all part of the story but one thing was perfectly clear. Y2J will step up if he needs to.

Curt Hennig, better known as “Mr. Perfect” with WWE, is a legend. More so a product of the 90’s, Hennig was a two-time Intercontinental Champion and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007. He is also the father of current WWE superstar and former Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel. At the end of his career, Mr. Perfect picked a fight with the wrong newcomer. In 2002 on what would be known as “the plane ride from hell”, a plane full of liquored up WWE superstars caused havoc on a chartered flight. Two of these guys happened to be Hennig and Lesnar. Hennig goaded Lesnar into a real wrestling match. Not backing down from a fight Lesnar went in and went in hard. During the scuffle, the two slammed into the emergency exit door and handle. Since the event, it has been reported that the pressure wouldn’t have given the door the ability to open but it didn’t stop WWE from firing Hennig due to the incident.

Braun Strowman

Now there technically wasn’t a backstage fight between Lesnar and Stroman, but there definitely was an in-ring moment caught on tape. At the 2018 Royal Rumble Stroman hit Lesnar with a very stiff knee. Now we all know that Stroman is still learning how to perfect his in-ring product–but messing up a move on a man who can legitimately beat the heck out of you is a bad idea. After the knee, Lesnar decided to let Stroman know that he just made a huge mistake. When Lesnar got back up, he wound up and delivered a punch right to the side of Strowman’s head. After the strike you see Stroman stumble and Lesnar yells at him to “calm down!” Though his choice of words was a bit more colorful…

You hear about stories all the time of wrestlers getting angry and fighting. It’s a business where you pretend to hit each other, sometimes you are going to do so for real. Emotions run high. But if there’s one person I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of–it’s Brock Lesnar.
