Anjali Ranadivé, 25, known by her stage name Anjali World, is an American singer-songwriter and marine conservationist. She’s also the daughter of Vivek Ranadivé, the Sacramento Kings’ owner, who’s been making headlines today for his uplifting post-game speech regarding the peaceful protests following the Stephon Clark tragedy.

Instagram Photo

Like her dad, Anjali also has the basketball gene in her. When she was twelve years old, her basketball team, which was coached by her father, reached the national finals by strategically employing a full-court press with Anjali as the designated trapper.

Instagram Photo

She became interested in singing through her mother and brother’s love for music. In particular, her brother produced tracks for local rappers. She decided to fully pursue music as a career after graduating from UC Berkeley in 2013, where she received a marine science degree.

Instagram Photo

After graduation, she founded Jaws & Paws, a marine and wildlife conservation nonprofit that spreads awareness for the conservation of sharks, polar bears, and tigers. Ranadive gives all the proceeds from her music to Jaws & Paws. In 2015, Anjali received the 2015 Paul Walker Ocean Leadership Award from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

She wrote and released her first single, “We Turn Up” in April 2014, which featured French Montana. Her second single is called “Nobody” and features Tyga. Anjali has opened for artists like Trey Songz, Raghav, and the New Boyz.

MLB Predictions 2018: Projecting The AL East Standings

With both the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees bolstering their already talented rosters, many have already condemned the other three teams in the AL East as being competitively irrelevant. While the Tampa Bay Rays may be depleted from a talent standpoint, both the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles may have just enough to become intriguing contenders within their division. As we have seen time and again, the team with the most talent does not always necessarily win the division at the end of the season, whether this is due to untimely injuries or certain players going cold at the wrong time. Regardless of who the consensus favorite is to win the AL East by seasons end, this will still be a brutally tough division that will see the eventual victor be particularly well prepared to go far in the postseason.

5. Tampa Bay Rays

Instagram Photo

Over the past two seasons, the Rays have purged their roster either through trades or during free agency. Most notably, the losses of prolific starting pitchers Alex Cobb (now with the Orioles) and Jake Odorizzi (now with the Twins) has all but confirmed everyone’s belief that the Rays are tanking in an attempt to become postseason contenders in a few years. Sit tight Rays fans, because the next few years are going to be especially brutal as the on the field product will be akin to watching a glorified minor league a ffair.

4. Toronto Blue Jays

Instagram Photo

Last season, the mostly underwhelming Toronto Blue Jays actually possessed some of the most efficient pitchers in the majors. Averaging an ERA of 4.34 (9th in MLB last season) and a WHIP of 1.24 (2nd in MLB last season), the Blue Jays clearly had the arms to stifle opposing offenses but lacked the tenacious bats needed to persevere in their brutal division. If Marcus Stroman can stay healthy (3.09 ERA last season) and J.A. Happ can be the strikeout machine that he was last season (8.79 K/9), the Blue Jays could potentially compete for a coveted Wild Card spot by the end of the season.

3. Baltimore Orioles

Instagram Photo

Before acquiring starting pitchers Andrew Cashner (3.40 ERA last season) and Alex Cobb (3.66 ERA last season), it appeared that the Orioles were doomed to be a team that was once again overly reliant on their impressive power bats to stay afloat in the AL East. Although the Orioles should by no means be the favorites to win their division, they now have an adequate rotation that is backed up by a gifted bullpen that is still elite even with closer Zach Britton out for at least the first half the season. Add to that Manny Machado going into a contract season and the Orioles could potentially shock the baseball world as they did when they won the AL East in 2014.

2. Boston Red Sox

Instagram Photo

One of the worst teams in the majors last season when it came to hitting the baseball out of the ballpark, the addition of consummate power hitter J.D. Martinez (45 HR, 104 RBIs, .690 SLG last season) will help immensely in the Red Sox becoming the deadly scoring unit that they were in 2016. With a starting rotation that is incredibly productive and consistent at the front end, the Red Sox will assuredly make the Yankee’s aspirations of winning the AL East especially difficult.

1. New York Yankees

Instagram Photo

Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Most individuals will stop there and assume that the offensive production of these two power swinging athletes will be more than enough to carry this team to win a division title. However, first-time manager Aaron Boone will still have to strengthen a starting rotation that was solid but not elite last season. If Michael Pineda can post an ERA below four and Sonny Gray can become the reliable front end starter that the Yankees expected him to be when they traded for him last year, this is a team that could not only win the AL East, but could very well become the clear favorites to win the World Series when all is said and done.

Stephon Clark Shooting: Why The Sacramento Kings Won’t Be Sticking to Sports

$

0

On March 18, Stephon Clark was killed by two Sacramento police officers in his grandparents’ backyard. Clark, armed with nothing more than a cell phone, was fired at 20 times. The officers did not identify themselves to Clark before pursuing him onto the property. Clark, 22, was killed in what cannot accurately be called a standoff. He had no weapon. But when police officers fear for their lives and misunderstand an everyday object for a gun, they are entitled to end other lives. According to body cam footage, officers continued to make demands of Clark as he lay dying beneath his grandparents’ bedroom window. Hard to comply when you’re dead.

Clark had been living with his grandparents, Sequita and Tommy Thompson, along with his young siblings. The elder Thompsons are in poor health and have limited mobility; they encourage their grandkids to enter the property through the backyard and knock on the Thompsons’ bedroom window so that someone inside can open the garage door. That is precisely what Stephon was doing when he was murdered.

Sequita Thompson heard the officers’ gunshots from inside the house and rushed to protect Stephon’s 7-year-old sister, crawling for cover. Tommy Thompson, in bed, heard someone outside calling to him. The couple wouldn’t learn that the shots were absorbed by their grandson until hours later after Sacramento PD requested they not look outside at the crime scene on her own property. Mrs. Thompson looked anyway.

In addition to his grandparents and siblings, Stephon Clark leaves behind two young sons and his loving partner Salena.

On March 22nd, a day after the chilling body cam footage of Stephon Clark’s death was released, local activists descended upon Sacramento. Led by the local Black Lives Matter chapter, protesters chanted inside of City Hall. Next, they shut down Interstate 5 at rush hour.

Later, demonstrators took the memory of Stephon Clark to Golden 1 Center.

The Sacramento Kings were scheduled to play their 73rd game of the NBA season in front of a home crowd whose patience with the reliably disappointing franchise has been stretched for years. On this night though, most fans–up to 15,000–either were turned away by the police or turned themselves around and left upon seeing nonviolent protesters blocking every entrance to Golden 1 Center. Law enforcement was “unable to ensure ticketed fans could safely enter the arena.” The peaceful demonstrators persevered, reminding everyone in earshot that Stephon Clark and his family deserve justice.

With arena doors locked, roughly 2,000 fans were present for the Kings game, which was delayed about twenty minutes.

Those who did gain access to the arena were invited to the lower bowl, and addressed by Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé after the final buzzer:

Ranadivé, surrounded by Kings players at center-court, gave an informal, timely, needed speech. Instead of ignoring the demonstration outside, or condemning its nature (which directly impacts Ranadivé’s wallet), Ranadivé applauded the activists. And while he did not address Stephon Clark by name, he referred to Clark’s death as a “horrific tragedy” affecting the Sacramento community.

Ranadivé mentioned neither police officers nor the disproportionate capacity of black people to be killed by them. In fact, Ranadivé was vague enough to imply to the uninformed that maybe Stephon Clark wasn’t murdered, but was instead the victim of a terrible accident.

Ranadivé’s speech wasn’t radical. Some may feel he was doing the bare-minimum–plus, what if it were his players protesting instead of ordinary Sacramento residents? But it wasn’t imperative that Ranadivé be radical–it was imperative that he confront reality and utilize the privilege and responsibility to which he refers. This is very particular context: a wealthy owner of a professional sports team commending peaceful protest in response to police brutality is significant and deviant in this historical moment.

In September 2017, President Donald Trump vilified black athletes who have taken action to protest the issues affecting the social communities which raised them. NBA commissioner Adam Silver will not alter a rule that implores players to stand during the customary pregame national anthem. NFL team owners have discouraged their players from exercising first amendment rights.

Vivek Ranadivé did more than most of his contemporaries would dare. And he didn’t hesitate.

Kings guard Garrett Temple, sidelined with an ankle injury, made clear that Stephon Clark’s death had a sickening effect on him. Talking to the Sacramento Bee‘s Jason Jones, Temple said he didn’t know if he’d have been able to play even if active. “I told Vince [Carter, teammate] this [injury] might have happened for a reason, I’m glad I had this boot on.” Commending protesters, Temple pointed out that by delaying an NBA game, the protesters were methodical: “a lot of people wouldn’t have known about” Clark’s death otherwise.

Vince Carter urged NBA fans and the American community at large, “let’s not sweep it under the rug” and instead keep national attention focused on the types of injustices faced by black Americans like Stephon Clark. Carter revealed that the Kings worked alongside their opponents, the Atlanta Hawks, to think about how to integrate the protests outside with the game on the hardwood. This resulted in Ranadivé’s address at the end of the night.

Ranadivé was adamant about the reality of this game, insisting, “it’s not just business as usual.” It’s bigger than basketball. He made a note of the “big platform” afforded to the Kings organization, and the privilege and responsibility attached. But we have to wonder if Vivek Ranadivé will put his money where his mouth is after declaring, “we’re gonna work really hard to prevent this kind of a tragedy from happening again.” We’ll have to stay tuned to make sure Ranadivé isn’t making empty promises for the sake of good PR. Sacramento can’t afford for this bold move by an NBA owner to be too good to be true.

Since 2015, the Sacramento Police Department has murdered six unarmed men. Five were black. Stephon Clark is the newest addition to a list of names we must remember as police brutality continues and its agents go unpunished. We count on the Sacramento Kings and the NBA at large to be leaders and collaborators in the struggle.

MLB Predictions 2018: Projecting The AL West Standings

$

0

With the World Series Champion Astros poised once again to win both their division and potentially a consecutive championship, it’s hard to imagine any team in the AL West seriously challenging them. However, the Los Angeles Angels are hard to ignore as they possess one of the most intriguing two-way players since Babe Ruth in Shohei Ohtani. While this potential blockbuster addition will most likely not be enough to supplant the Astros as the eventual winners of the AL West, it should at the very least make the battle for first place in the division a bit more contentious than it otherwise would have been. If nothing else, the high-powered offense of the Astros should be more than enough to entertain baseball fanatics that are ready to accept the youth movement that is now apart of most of the highly successful teams in the majors.

5. Seattle Mariners

Instagram Photo

An aging roster that is now being slowly disintegrated because of nagging injuries sustained during Spring Training, the Mariners are all but assured to finish near the basement of the AL West.  While Nelson Cruz and Robinson Cano are more than capable of entertaining their suffering fan base initially, Seattle’s abysmal starting rotation will be a constant reminder that this team would probably be best served by trading what superstars they possess and reload their anemic farm system to eventually become a competitive franchise in a few years.

4. Texas Rangers

Instagram Photo

Not so long ago, the Rangers actually had an exciting and gifted power hitting team that was able to overcome their starting pitching inconsistencies. However, the Rangers home run derby-like performances were few and far between last year as they finished the season with one of the weakest slugging percentages in baseball (.403). Combined that with the fact that starting pitchers Yu Darvish and Andrew Cashner are now with other teams and it becomes sadly apparent that the Rangers only hope of avoiding a last-place finish in the AL West is the injury-laden Mariners being competitively inept this year.

3. Oakland Athletics

Instagram Photo

With a starting rotation that slowly but actually became competent last season (.251 BAA, 6th in MLB), the Athletics appear poised to be a team that can hang around from a competitive standpoint. While the Athletics still may not have the hitters that can get on base consistently, the like of Khris Davis, Matt Joyce, and Ryon Healy will allow this team to score in bunches with the immense power that they possess. Although they may be a fringe Wild Card contender at best this season, they are definitely trending in the right direction and will be a team to watch down the stretch of the regular season.

2. Los Angeles Angels

Instagram Photo

Until we can see what the versatile Shohei Ohtani can do as a pitcher and hitter in the majors, it’s difficult to say how much of an impact the gifted athlete will contribute this year. However, if ever there was a known quantity in baseball it is unequivocally epitomized by the annual superstar performances of Mike Trout. With that being said, the Angels pitching roster will need to be far better than it was last season (6.27 ERA last season) if they hope to make the most of the prolific playmakers that they currently possess

1. Houston Astros

Instagram Photo

Given what they possess offensively and defensively amongst their infielders alone (Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa), the Astros are a team that has the youth and off the charts talent to challenge anyone they may face this year. When you add to the mix the Astros deep and capable starting rotation led by ace Dallas Keuchel, it becomes readily apparent that this team is once again built to be the best team in both their division and in the majors. Barring serious injuries throughout their roster, the Astros will be incredibly difficult to stifle during both the regular season and postseason.

Beta Theta Pi At University Of Missouri Suspended For Hazing

The Beta Theta Pi fraternity at the University of Missouri was placed on disciplinary probation for hazing violations. However, the fraternity won’t face any sanctions from its national organization.

The university placed the Beta Theta Pi fraternity on probation until February 1, 2019, after determining active members hazed new members during the fall of 2017 semester. Furthermore, Beta Theta Pi must also have monthly meetings with the school’s Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life until December of 2018.

According to Fox2Now, the fraternity’s national organization decided the probation is sufficient. Justin Warren, a spokesman for the national Beta Theta Pi fraternity organization, said the investigation found one incident of hazing involving a few members. As a result of the incident, the two members involved were suspended until graduation and lost their rooms at the chapter house.

The suspension of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity comes just days after the FarmHouse International Fraternity announced that the closure of the University of Missouri’s FarmHouse chapter was in response to a joint investigation the fraternity conducted with the university into allegations of hazing and alcohol violations.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who were shut down for hazing and the Lamda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

Alexis Mashak, a 27-year-old Wisconsin middle school teacher, has been arrested and charged after she allegedly had sex with a high school student. Mashak and the victim reportedly worked together as employees of the Boys and Girls Club of Sparta.

Mashak, a married Meadowview Middle School physical education teacher, admitted to having sex with a 17-year-old Sparta High School student between November 2017 and March of 2018. Mashak, who is currently free on $1,000 bond, is facing four felony charges.

The student said he met Mashak through his girlfriend and that they both worked at the Sparta Boys & Girls Club. The pair told police they had sexual contact in his vehicle, his house and the community center, and that they shared nude photographs, according to the complaint.

The Sparta School District in a press release sent at 3:03 p.m. Thursday stated that school officials were made aware of the “possible inappropriate relationship” on Tuesday and that Mashak was on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a district investigation. Clemson vs. Kansas Live Stream: How To Watch Sweet 16 Online

With the Sweet 16 finally underway in NCAA basketball, there is a game between two quality  opponents. These teams are the Clemson Tigers and the Kansas Jayhawks. According to the tournament seedings, these teams are slightly uneven and Kansas is currently a five point favorite to win this game. Both teams have the opportunity to make it to the Elite Eight and to potentially win the national championship. Expect this game to be extremely competitive throughout as a result.

Kansas’s success is due to its extremely talented backcourt. Guards Devonte’ Graham and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk have been the leaders of this year’s team and also have boasted impressive stats thus far in the regular season. Graham is currently averaging 17.4 points per game along with 4.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists. Mykhailiuk is averaging 15.0 points per game along with 3.9 rebounds per game. Both of them know what it takes to win these NCAA tournament games. Expect Graham and Mykhailiuk to play well on Friday night.

Clemson’s success is due to its balanced offense. This season, Clemson has five separate players who are averaging over ten points per game. Three of these players are guards while the other two are forwards. This balance allows the Tigers to defeat teams in a variety of ways. They can either use their physicality to wear you down or their elite shooting from the outside. Expect Clemson to use its balanced attack on Friday to keep Kansas’s defense off-guard.

As for my prediction, I have to side with Kansas. Although I do believe that Clemson’s balanced offense will give the Jayhawks some problems, Kansas’ guards are significantly better and I expect them to dominate the second half due to their experience. I do expect this game to be extremely close but I think that Kansas will squeak out a victory.

Duke vs. Syracuse Live Stream: How To Watch Sweet 16 Online

With the Sweet 16 finally underway in NCAA basketball, there is a game between two ACC opponents. These teams are the Duke Blue Devils and the Syracuse Orange. According to the tournament seedings, these teams are extremely uneven and Duke is currently a double digit favorite to win this game. This season, Duke won the only meeting between these teams. Now, Syracuse will be seeking revenge and will be looking to return to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2016. Expect this game to be extremely competitive throughout as a result.

Duke’s success is due to its star forward Marvin Bagley III. This season, Bagley is averaging 21.2 points per game along with 11.3 rebounds. Bagley has looked like one of the best players in the country this season and is a serious contender to win the Naismith College Player of the Year Award. Entering this season, Bagley was expected to be one of the top picks in the upcoming NBA Draft and that will likely come true if he goes pro after the season. Expect Bagley to have a big game on Friday if Duke plans on winning this contest.

Syracuse’s success is due to its team defense. Every year, Syracuse is one of the best defensive teams in the country under coach Jim Boeheim. This season is no different as the Orange officially have the tenth best scoring defense in all of college basketball. Syracuse is allowing 63.6 points per game this season and will look to shut down Duke’s potent offense. Leading the Orange offensively is guard Tyus Battle. This season, Battle is averaging 19.3 points per game and scored 17 points in the team’s last game against Michigan State. If Syracuse plans on winning this contest, Battle will need to have a big game.

As for my prediction, I have to side with Duke. It is very difficult to defeat Duke due to their size and elite shooting ability. I do not think that Syracuse has enough offensive weapons to win.

West Virginia vs. Villanova Live Stream: How to Watch Sweet 16 Online

With the Sweet 16 finally underway in NCAA basketball, there is a game between two elite opponents. These teams are the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Villanova Wildcats. According to the tournament seedings, these teams are somewhat uneven and Villanova is currently a five point favorite to win this game. Both of these teams have an opportunity to go to the Elite Eight and to potentially win a national championship. Expect this game to be extremely competitive as a result.

West Virginia’s success is due to its extremely talented backcourt. Guards like Jevon Carter, Daxter Miles Jr. and Lamont West all decided to return this season which gives West Virginia one of the best backcourts in all of college basketball. Carter is currently averaging 17.4 points per game along with 4.7 rebounds and 6.6 assists. Miles Jr. is averaging 12.8 points per game along with 2.8 rebounds per game in over 29 minutes per game. West is averaging 9.5 points per game along with 3.9 rebounds. All three of them know what it takes to win these NCAA tournament games so one can expect them all to play well on Friday.

Villanova’s success is due to its elite offense. This season, Villanova is scoring 86.9 points per game which ranks first in all of college basketball. The team’s offensive success is due to its unselfish nature. The Wildcats currently have six players who are averaging double digit points per game. That is absolutely ridiculous. Villanova can use its depth and balanced offense to wear out its opponents which is what it will attempt to do on Friday. Expect a lot of players to contribute on the offensive end against West Virginia as a result.

As for my prediction, I have to side with Villanova. West Virginia relies heavily on forcing turnovers with its press. The only problem is that Villanova rarely turns it over. I expect Villanova to control the tempo of the game as their elite shooting carries them to the Elite Eight.

Production On ‘Rick And Morty’ Season 4 Is Being Held Up By Contract Negotions

Adult Swim

After first being released in 2013 to little fanfare, through sheer quality and word-of-mouth, Adult Swim’s Rick And Morty has morphed into an absolute pop cultural phenomenon.

And in addition to being a pop culture fixture, Rick And Morty has also become one of the funniest shows on television — cartoon or otherwise. Between its mind-bending plot lines, mile-a-minute jokes, or gorgeously creative animation, Rick and Morty is simply a step ahead of its competition. The only problem is, despite its success, it has yet to be renewed for a fourth season.

But how? How could it be possible that Adult Swim still hasn’t renewed one of the biggest shows on television amongst a key demographic? I’ll tell ya how, the same thing that always gets in the way of things happening: money.

via Uproxx:

…Co-creator Dan Harmon tweeted, “It can be challenging, especially with crippling lazy alcoholism, to write a show that hasn’t been ordered by a network.” The show’s other mastermind, Justin Roiland, provided some necessary context, though. “For everyone telling me to get back to work on Rick and Morty (season four), turn your attention to Turner,” he wrote. “I’m waiting around just like you.” Cartoon Network (and therefore, Adult Swim) falls under the Turner Broadcasting System umbrella, so it’s less about “lazy alcoholism” and more to do with, as Harmon explained on Kevin Smith’s SModcast, contract negotiations.

“The reason we’re not working on Rick and Morty right now ain’t because I figured out that I don’t need to impress you,” the Community creator (who wants to do 14 episodes, instead of the usual 10, next season) said. “It’s because of a little something called contract negotiations and it’s gotten complicated this time around.” There’s only one man who can settle this contractual dispute.

While I’m relatively confident that both sides will be able to figure out the contract and get the show back into production, there’s always that little part of me that worries about super successful shows suffering the same fate of Chappelle’s Show — when the creator is asked to give up creative control in exchange for more money and they end up walking. That’s what scares me.

Top 5 Things You Need To Know About Zlatan Ibrahimović

It’s official. Zlatan Ibrahimović has left Manchester United for LA Galaxy, and people are excited. Although he is a controversial player due to his aggressive actions in the past, there is no doubt he’s one of the best soccer players worldwide. After only two seasons with Manchester United, it was agreed that an early termination was allowed despite his contract not being up until later this year. This is good news for MLS because there has not been a commercial name like this in the league since David Beckham. It’s no surprise that Zlatan will bring publicity. With his phenomenal skill, brash demeanor and contentious past, the crowds will certainly gather. Here’s what you need to know about him.

Zlatan’s Age

Instagram Photo

The MLS has been accused of being a place that players go to retire, and with their signing of the 36-year-old, people are wondering if this is actually the case. However, despite his age, Zlatan is in excellent shape. His knee ligament injury last April with Manchester United took him out for the majority of the season which worried many since most players at 35 who experience this type of injury have a very difficult time getting back on the field. This was not the case for Zlatan thankfully, who has recovered well.

Impressive Stats

Instagram Photo

Since the start of his professional career, Zlatan has played on many teams. At age 16, he joined the Swedish professional soccer club Malmö FF. Then at 19, he signed with AFC Ajax. From there, he played for Juventus. Following that, he joined Internazionale where he scored 25 goals in the 2008-09 season and became the league’s top goal scorer. After this, he briefly signed with FC Barcelona. He didn’t stay for long due to him feeling as though he didn’t fit well with the team, so he decided to play for AC Milan where he made 85 appearances and scored 56 goals. He then moved on to Paris Saint-Germain where he stayed for four years. During this time he scored 156 goals and in October 2015, he became the all-time lead scorer for the club. On July 1, 2016, Zlatan signed with Manchester United and in his first season, he played in 46 matches and scored 28 goals. In addition, he was also a member of the Swedish National Team from 2001-2016, and for his last six years with the team, he was captain.

Violent On The Field

Instagram Photo

Zlatan has a history of being both verbally combative and physical on and off the field. This was evident in 2011 when he was playing for AC Milan. After FC Bari’s Marco Rossi beat him to a header, Zlatan punched the opposing defender in his stomach and was issued a red card followed by a three-game ban. When playing for Paris Saint-Germain, Zlatan collided with Dejan Lovren of Lyon, who fell to the ground. While on the ground, Zlatan stomped on the player’s head and hand. There was speculation over whether or not the incident was on purpose. Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas believed it was. During his short time with Barcelona, Zlatan had disagreements with how Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola managed the team. Zlatan’s frustrations led him to throwing a training-kit box across the room at Guardiola as well as verbally abusing him.

LA Times Introduction

On Friday March 23, to properly announce his introduction to LA Galaxy, Zlatan paid for a full-page advertisement in the LA Times. The ad was short, simple, and right to the point. It read, “Dear Los Angeles, You’re welcome.” At the bottom of the ad was his signature. Just from the ad itself, it can be gleamed that Zlatan is anything but humble; however, the ad demonstrates his over-the-top personality which will definitely entertain MLS soccer fans.

His Name Is In The Dictionary

Instagram Photo

In 2012, to honor Zlatan, the Swedish Language Council added a new word to their dictionary: “Zlatanera.” The verb means “to dominate.” The council decided to add the word after the phrase “to zlatan” started being actively used in conversation. The word was first coined on Les Guignols, a satirical television show in France during the time Zlatan was playing for Paris Saint-Germain.

So get ready! Get pumped! Dare to Zlatan! Sporting the number nine jersey, there is rumor that Zlatan may make his first appearance with LA Galaxy as early as March 31st, 2018 against Los Angeles FC.

Michael Bennett Charged With Injuring Elderly Paraplegic Woman At Super Bowl

Philadelphia Eagles star Michael Bennett has been charged with committing a felony after allegedly injuring an elderly paraplegic woman at the Super Bowl last year. An arrest warrant has also been issued against Bennett in Harris County, Texas. As more court documents surface, it also appears that the Eagles were unaware of the situation at the time of the incident.

What happened?

Instagram Photo

Bennett was indicted by a Harris County, Texas Grand Jury after he was alleged to have pushed down a 66-year-old female NRG Stadium employee who was monitoring access to Super Bowl 51’s field.

According to TMZ, the Harris County Texas District Attorney alleged that Bennett “shoved his way on to the field where players were gathering to celebrate.” In addition, the charge included “injury to the elderly, includes intentionally and knowingly, causing bodily injury to a person 65 years or older.”

Bleeding Green Nation also gave the following excerpts of the report:

“NRG Security personnel, including the 66-year-old disabled victim, told Bennett he had to use a different entrance for field access.”

“Instead, he pushed through them, including the elderly woman who was part of the security team.”

“The charge, injury to the elderly, includes intentionally and knowingly, causing bodily injury to a person 65 years or older. It carries a penalty of up to ten years in prison and a $10,000 fine.”

“As a result of the indictment, a warrant has been issued for Bennett’s arrest. Prosecutors are working with Bennett’s counsel regarding his surrender.”

In a statement on Twitter, NFL reporter Derrick Gunn confirmed that neither teams involved with the story were aware of the incident:

“According to a league source the Seahawks and the Eagles were not aware of this MIchael Bennett inciden”

Who is Michael Bennett?

Instagram Photo

Bennett is an American football defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles, originally playing college football at Texas A&M and serving as an undrafted free agent for the Seattle Seahawks. He is notably the brother of Martellus Bennett.

If convicted, Bennett could face up to 10 years in prison with a $10k fine. At this time, it is believed that Harris County has issued a warrant for his arrest.

Purdue vs. Texas Tech Live Stream: How to Watch Sweet 16 Online

With the Sweet 16 finally underway in NCAA basketball, there is a game between two quality opponents. These teams are the Purdue Boilermakers and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. According to the tournament seedings, these teams are somewhat even and Purdue is currently a two point favorite to win this game. Both of these teams have an opportunity to go to the Elite Eight and to potentially win a national championship. Expect this game to be extremely competitive as a result.

Purdue’s success is also due to its high scoring offense. This season, the Boilermakers average the 38th most points per game in all of college basketball with 80.8 points per game. Its scoring offense is due to its elite three point shooting and unselfish style of play. Purdue is currently shooting 42.1% from the three point line and the team ranks 24th in all of college basketball in assists per game. This combo makes Purdue almost impossible to outscore which is what Texas Tech will have to do if it wants to win this contest.

Texas Tech’s success is due to its elite defense. This season, Texas Tech is allowing 64.7 points per game which is the 18th fewest in all of college basketball this season. The Red Raiders also average the 46th most steals per game with 7.3 and use constant pressure to keep their opponents off-guard.   This combo gives the Red Raiders one of the best defenses in all of college basketball which should be able to limit Purdue’s offense on Friday.

As for my prediction, I have to side with Texas Tech. Purdue is currently dealing with a serious injury to star center Isaac Haas and I do not believe that this team will be able to handle Texas Tech’s big men with his injury. Although this game should be really close, I expect Texas Tech to make its first Elite Eight in program history.

Daniel Bryan Net Worth 2018: How Much Is Daniel Worth

Wrestling fans around the world let out a collective “YES!” this week when everyone’s favorite underdog announced he has been cleared by WWE doctors for his in-ring return. Daniel Bryan addressed SmackDown Live on March 2oth and it seems we now know where that first match is going to happen. Outside the ring Bryan is known as a down to Earth guy and enjoys to live simply. But how he lives may be misleading. Weekly TV appearances with WWE, two reality TV shows, and a book have to add up to something right? So how much is Bryan actually worth?

Instagram Photo

Daniel Bryan Net Worth: $8 Million

Turns out it does add up to something, $8 Million. Bryan hasn’t always been at the pinnacle of the wrestling world, how did he get there?

Early Life

Instagram Photo

Bryan was born in Aberdeen, Washington. His father worked in logging and his mother was a Therapist. They divorced when Bryan was young. He grew up an avid wrestling fan often trying moves out against his friends in the living room. When he was young he cites The Ultimate Warrior as his favorite wrestler but as he grew older, but not taller, his taste changed. He started seeing guys like Dean Malenko and began to see how he could make his dream of wrestling come true. There was a place at the table for small technical wrestlers and he was going to take it.

1999-2000

Instagram Photo

Bryan originally trained at the Texas Wrestling Academy which was owned by Shawn Michaels. Bryan learned from Michaels and the other trainers and also became close with Brain Kendrick in this time. Bryan also lists William Regal as a major mentor in his career even going so far as to incorporate Regal’s signature Maroon into his own gear.

2001-2009

Instagram Photo

Bryan really cut his teeth as the American Dragon on the Independent circuit. He often toured the UK and Japan. He spent a short time with New Japan Pro Wrestling and even had a stint as one half of the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions with Curry Man, who was fellow Ring of Honor all-star Christopher Daniels. The Promotion he is most synonymous with outside of WWE is Ring of Honor. He spent years as a mainstay and held the promotions top title for an incredible 462 days.

2009-Present

Instagram Photo

Bryan finally signed with WWE in 2009 and has spent most of his career there since. He has found incredible success winning the United States Championship, the Intercontinental Championship, The Tag Team Championship with Kane as Team Hell No, Money in the Bank 2011, 12 Slammys, The WWE Championship, and The World Heavy Weight Champion. You name it Bryan has won it. He also met his wife, who wrestles under the name Brie Bella, while there. Since his tenure, he has been a prominent figure on both Total Divas and Total Bellas, the former actually paying for and televising his wedding to Brie. He also wrote a book titled Yes!: My Improbable Journey to the Main Event of Wrestlemania that chronicled his journey to Wrestlemania 30.

Daniel Bryan has had an amazing career and it looks like it’s about to add a few more chapters. Great ready for a whole lot more YES chants.

Sweet 16 Spread Picks From A Regular Guy Whose Average (At Best) At Gambling

$

It’s the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament, which is arguably the third best weekend in sports, behind the NFL Divisional Round and … the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. It’s also Friday, which means my brain is officially in weekend mode and my belly is already filled with one Happy Hour beer.

Views from the Lab

So, because of those aforementioned factors (basketball, Friday, alcohol consumed), I decided to bring you guys the picks I’m rolling with tonight.

Take them or fade them, I really don’t care, but at least give me credit for being honest — I’m an average gambler. While some (most) would lie and say they’re on a perpetual hot streak, I’m an average man of the people, bringing you my wildly average picks.

Here’s tonight’s slate:

#5 Clemson (+6) vs. #1 University of Kansas: 7:07 p.m. EST

Instagram Photo

The Analysis: Well, Kansas is Kansas. They’re regularly a one seed and have been there down that. Then there’s Clemson, who I really don’t know all that much about.

Clemson came into the tournament as a 5-seed, and while they’ve advanced to the Sweet 16, their wins haven’t been all that impressive. In the first round, they beat an overmatched New Mexico State team, and in the second game they beat Auburn, and we all know the SEC isn’t known for its basketball. Going even further back — the ACC Tournament final — Clemson got beat by Virginia, and we all know what happened to Virginia.

Kansas, on the other hand, beat a tough West Virginia team in the Big 12 final by 11 points, before blowing out Penn in the first round, then getting by a scrappy & talented Seton Hall in the second round.

While I think it’ll be a close game, I think Kansas pulls away late.

The Pick: I’d buy a point and take Kansas -5

#5 West Virginia (+5.5) vs. #1 Villanova: 7:27 p.m. EST

Instagram Photo

The Analysis: While no one could have predicted the extent of the upsets we’ve seen so far, many people (myself included) went into the tournament knowing that it was more wide-open than in year’s past. And because of that, I took Villanova to win it all, who, despite a couple of hiccups here and there, have looked like the best team in the country all season.

Now, that said, Bob Huggins and West Virginia are just one of those teams that scare you, ya know? Maybe it’s Huggy Bear, maybe it’s their Press Virginia nickname, but there’s always something about those Mountaineers that make you feel like they can pop up & snatch any game.

So, all of that is a long way of me saying I don’t know how this game is going to end. However, I do have a feeling how it might start.

The effects of WVU’s press on an opponent largely manifest themselves towards the end of games, meaning if it (when) it’s close, it will likely be late.

The Pick: Villanova -3 in the 1st half

This story is developing (I’m drinking & researching my picks). Please refresh for updates (if you even give a shit).

Jason Pierre-Paul Net Worth 2018: How Much Is JPP worth

$

Tampa Bay Buccaneer defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul was an intimidating presence on the Giants defensive line for years. He was recently traded to Tampa Bay for a third-round draft pick. Let’s take a look back at the career of the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl champion, starting with his net worth.

Jason-Pierre-Paul Net Worth: $27.5 million

According to Forbes, Pierre-Paul has an estimated net worth of $27.5 million.

College Career

Instagram Photo

Pierre-Paul started his collegiate career at the College of the Canyons in California where he earned All-American honors while recording 14 sacks his freshman season. He then transferred to the prominent JUCO program Fort Scott Community College in  Kansas where he again earned All-American status and put up monster numbers. Then, for his junior season, he transferred to the University of South Florida in Tampa. At USF, he was named First Team All-Big East and First Team All-American. Pierre-Paul decided to skip his final season of eligibility and enter the 2010 NFL draft.

2010-2015

Instagram Photo

JPP had an excellent showing at the 2010 NFL Combine where he was voted to the 2010 All-NFL Draft Team. The New York Giants selected him with the 15th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft and Pierre-Paul penned a contract with the team worth 20 million dollars over 5 years with 11 million guaranteed.  He played all 16 games of his rookie season while recording solid numbers for a rookie. In the 2011 season, Pierre-Paul burst onto the scene. He led the highly praised Giant defense to the Super Bowl, where he had a major impact in slowing down Tom Brady and a prolific New England Patriot offense. He was voted to his first Pro Bowl that season while leading the NFL with 16.5 sacks. He also became the first player in NFL history to record a forced fumble, blocked a field goal, sack, and a forced safety in a single game during a December 13th tilt against the Cowboys. Over the next few seasons, Pierre-Paul took a step back production-wise as he was asked to carry more of the workload of the Giants defensive front.

2015-Present

Instagram Photo

During the 2015 off-season, Pierre-Paul was negotiating a long-term deal with the Giants but they slapped him with the non-exclusive franchise tag. On July 4th of 2015, a bizarre incident occurred at Pierre-Paul’s home. While attempting to light a firework in celebration of the holiday, he exploded it in his hand. After much speculation of a career-threatening injury, Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated. He only appeared in five games in the 2015 season after signing a one year deal to remain in New York on October 27th.

JPP remained with the Giants for the 2016 season which for him was shortened by a sports hernia in his back but the season was a successful one for the Giants as they made their first playoff appearance since 2012. Pierre-Paul inked a four year 62 million dollar deal with New York in March of 2017. The 2017 season would prove to be a disaster for the Giants with them finishing 3-13 good for last in the NFC East. With the team looking to make salary cap room to sign some of their younger players to long-term deals, the Giants traded Jason Pierre-Paul to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a third-round draft pick in the 2018 draft.

Royce White Is The NBA’s Worst-Kept Secret: How Kevin Love & DeMar DeRozan Brought Him Back

$
0
0

On March 6th, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love published “Everyone Is Going Through Something”, a personal essay on coming to terms with an anxiety disorder.  A week earlier, Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan revealed in an interview with the Toronto Star that he has been living with depression and anxiety throughout his NBA career. Love, inspired by DeRozan’s courage to speak, chose to go public and give context to a peculiar moment from earlier in the season when he left a November game during the third quarter. Love reveals in his essay for The Players’ Tribune that he was, in fact, having a panic attack.

DeRozan’s and Love’s honesty have had a thunderously positive impact: athletes and non-athletes alike have come out in droves, thanking them for being genuine on a topic generally understood as taboo in sports–ironically, a topic that afflicts tens of millions of Americans yearly.

If it’s okay for an MVP candidate in DeRozan and an NBA champion in Love to be candid about mental health, it’s okay for anyone to be–right? In 2018, it’s looking to be true. But in 2012? Not even close.

Instagram Photo

Royce White was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder at age 17. At the same time, he was en route to stardom. Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball 2009 could have kept quiet about his condition, faked a smile for the cameras, and carried on like any tough, masculine jock pining for recognition by the NCAA. Thankfully, White didn’t do any of these things. Royce was open about his mental health from day one, learning to control his symptoms for the sake of his wellbeing and in the context of basketball.

White would find his way to Iowa State University, where he’d put to bed any suspicion about a diagnosed mental illness affecting outstanding skill and pure love for the game. Royce proved in no time that the combination of proper self-management of his G.A.D., consultation with therapists, and–most crucially–cooperative teammates and accommodating coaches was the key to his personal achievements, and ultimately Iowa State’s success. In one year of play for the Cyclones, Royce White would become the only player in the nation to lead his team in all five major statistical categories; he was unanimously voted Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, and led the Cyclones to the third round of the NCAA tournament. In March 2012, Royce declared for the NBA Draft.

NBA fans may remember Royce White as a bust of a draft pick by the Houston Rockets. White is surely memorialized by some as a stubborn, entitled rookie undeserving of an NBA salary; a young buck with a debilitating fear of flying; a waste of Daryl Morey’s energy. In truth, Royce White’s public narrative was manipulated and his NBA career sabotaged. And in truly twisted fashion, it took Kevin Love’s victory of a mental health confession to bring Royce White back to our NBA consciousness.

On March 20th, Royce White appeared on Dave Zirin’s Edge of Sports podcast to clear the air and tell his truth. White discusses his version of the falling-out with the NBA.

Instagram Photo

Royce reveals that being open about his anxiety disorder in college was a great choice: he received an outpouring of support from his Iowa State family. He does, though, attribute this to his good play and the team’s subsequent success. If Royce were less talented, perhaps he’d have been received differently by his college community. In any case, he was warned often: “this is gonna hinder you going forward [into the NBA]”. White, initially projected to be a top-5 draft pick, recalls the media spin on his life; he started to believe he wouldn’t be drafted at all.

Royce White disclosed his anxiety disorder long before the draft. NBA scouts had plenty of notice, and ample opportunity to learn about how Royce’s mental illness could be managed in an NBA framework. But the NBA’s absent mental health policy and complete ignorance of potentially affected players dominated Royce’s narrative.

During a pre-draft workout with the Miami Heat, the first thing Royce was asked about was his anxiety. His condition often affected his ability to fly, but flying wasn’t Royce’s be-all end-all. He was concerned with more than just planes and buses. However, the prospect of being bussed to games, as opposed to flying with the team, was shot down before White could even ask about it. He was told by an unnamed member of the Heat organization, “you wouldn’t even be able to drive to Orlando” if drafted by them. This was contemptuous and clear intimidation, rooted not in consultation with a single medical professional, but in irrational fear. White reveals that many within the NBA feared White “setting a precedent” that would influence players to fake mental illness to get out of playing while still collecting a paycheck. Royce found this idea alarming, as anyone should. But he is thoughtful enough to consider the notion, and argues that any player who would go to such a length “may just not have the tools to articulate why [he wouldn’t] want to play”, further indicting the NBA’s negligence.

Instagram Photo

Royce White didn’t slip into the late second round like the media compelled him to believe he would. On June 28, 2012, White was drafted by the Rockets with the 16th pick. Thus began the next chapter of his basketball life, but not without controversy.

Royce tells Zirin that members of Houston’s front office approached him to discuss options for team travel, and it was suggested that the NBA was struggling to develop pertinent policy. It was decided among Houston officials that special conditions would have to be set up for Royce, and he could possibly travel by bus to and from away games. Commending the team attorney, White sets him apart from other Rockets employees, whose willingness to assist Royce was hard to believe in. But White further explains that the attorney was overconfident that the league office would agree to the Rockets’ arrangements for Royce.

Royce was later told that bus travel would, in fact, be impossible. According to Rockets officials, the team would be subject to penalties including millions in fines. Making accommodations for a preexisting medical condition was suddenly a “salary cap infringement”. Royce points out that it’s not as if he was requesting a private jet or a Lamborghini–he was courageously requesting measures in order to take care of himself and contribute to an NBA team desperate for roster improvement. The NBA made it clear: they chose to abuse their abhorrent conceptualization of mental health instead of dealing with the specific health-related needs of one player. But at the end of the day, it’s not just about Royce. It’s about every NBA player, past, present, and future.

Long-term, Royce White was ready to effect structural change to the NBA. It wasn’t about a bus. It was about a general ignorance of mental health and the denial of a space for him to uncover that ignorance. White would have liked to collaborate with the players’ union and the league office in order to validate mental health as equally important to physical health. Anxiety disorders afflict 40 million adults in the U.S.–that’s nearly one-fifth of the population. It’s statistically preposterous that Royce White was the only NBA athlete living with anxiety in 2012. He was the most open and honest, but hardly alone. His trailblazing would have opened channels for his colleagues to talk, listen, and alter the status quo. Not to mention, he would have been a pretty damn good NBA player too.

Instagram Photo

Kevin Love is reaping the benefits of speaking up without backlash. DeMar DeRozan is as well, but because of his demure nature and the different approach taken by Love, it’s Love who has become the poster child for the NBA’s brand-new approach to mental health.

But in the context of Royce White, Love should not be demonized. None of this should be controversial. Royce is “totally in support” of Love and DeRozan coming out about their battles with anxiety and depression, but laments that it took this long for other players to feel comfortable speaking up. Less than a week after Love published his confessional, it was announced that the NBA and NBPA would hire a Director of Mental Health and Wellness.

Royce White deserves to feel frustrated and disappointed. He condemns NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and NBPA Director Michele Roberts on Zirin’s podcast, explaining that their mental health policy plans didn’t come out of the woodwork–parts were literally written by Royce, for them, three years earlier. And neither Silver nor Roberts has reached out to Royce since.

Still, Royce wants to see the NBA change for the good of his NBA brothers. He argues that Kevin Love, a 10-year veteran with league-wide clout (and not to mention a conventionally attractive white man who appeals to a whiter NBA audience), validated Royce’s concerns of six years prior. Royce also points out that DeMar and Kevin, All-Star veterans, have proven that players with mental health issues can, in fact, be “reliable”. Reality is far removed from the myth of players faking illness to sit.

Royce, as a 21-year-old rookie, made demands for structural change when he had no status. It was easy to keep him quiet, and soon enough push him out of the NBA.

Instagram Photo

Before playing a single game for the Rockets, Royce White was relegated to the G-League. He refused the assignment. A year after being drafted, White was traded to Philadelphia. He was waived. A short stint in Sacramento and a brief Summer League appearance for the Clippers later, Royce was out of the NBA entirely by August 2015.

He would find a home in London, Ontario, where he plays for the Canadian Basketball League. In his first year in the NBL, Royce led the Lightning to a championship and was voted league MVP. The NBL and the NBA have little in common; the London Lightning are no Houston Rockets. But in London, Royce can play and live in peace.

White is active on Twitter and continues to speak on mental health issues. It is crucial to remember his story as the NBA progresses on the topic of mental wellness.

Regardless of the program you root for, whether they are a powerhouse program or a relatively unknown one, making it to the regional final is a tremendous accomplishment that should not be taken for granted. However, for any team that has made it to this point once or several times, the ultimate goal is to eventually cut down the nets as the victors of their respective regions and clinch a spot in the Final Four. While the grand prize of this erratically entertaining tournament is to be the last team standing to hoist up the National Championship trophy, it cannot be overstated how impressive it is to make it through the second weekend of the grueling postseason event that is March Madness. Although we rarely get to bear witness to a double-digit seeded team making it all the way to the Final Four and even rarer still to see said program win it all, this could very well be the year where that close to impossible feat becomes a reality and not just an unrealistic dream. By the end of the weekend, we will undoubtedly have one of the most varied and unique Final Fours in the history of the NCAA Tournament.

March Madness Games For Elite Eight:

1. Loyola-Chicago Ramblers (11) vs. Kansas State Wildcats (9)

Time: Saturday, 6:09 PM E.T.
Location: Philips Arena, Atlanta, Georgia
