NCAA Tournament Bracketology 2018: The 7th Seeds

When attempting to gauge where the highly competitive mid-major and above average power five programs belong in the final NCAA Tournament bracket, it can be an arduous endeavor that is more based on subjective guesswork than objective analytics. However, even if these projected seventh seeds are being underrated or overrated, they will usually succumb or persevere depending on their competitive natures and dynamic skill sets. In terms of how far any of these programs can go in the tournament, the possibilities run the gamut of losing in the first round to making it to and winning the National Title game. Although there will be many matchups to consider when projecting which underrated program will make it the farthest, do not overlook any of the following teams that have shown glimpses of greatness and could very well be sleeping giants that are waiting for the right moment to assert themselves.

South Region:
1. Seton Hall Pirates

Despite never playing consistent defense or offense this season, the scrappy Pirates have proven that they are capable of taking down ranked opponents thanks to their underrated physicality. In order for this program to go far in the tournament, they will need to establish a strong presence underneath the basket to garner rebounds that will be vital in helping their offense produce at a higher level than it did in the regular season.

West Region:
1. Nevada Wolf Pack

When Wolf Pack are able to hit their shots, they are one of the most dynamic and intimidating offensive programs in the country. Shooting 40.1% from the three-point range, the Wolfpack are capable of scoring points quickly and efficiently, which is further helped by the fact that they rarely turn the ball over. While their shaky defense leaves a lot to be desired, they have the fast and precise shooters to go far in the tournament.

East Region:
1. Arkansas Razorbacks

Shamelessly, the Razorbacks have lived and died by how productive their offense is on the court (82 PPG) as their dreadful defense rarely shows up to save the day (75.7 PAPG). Luckily, the Razorbacks are highly accurate when shooting from anywhere on the court (48.1 FG%, 40.2 3P%), but they will need to improve their consistency from the free throw line if they hope to grind out wins against defensively superior opponents (67 FT%).

Midwest Region:
1. Miami Hurricanes

Although the Hurricanes struggled mightily on offense throughout the majority of the regular season, they have looked far better in their last four games in this regard (scored 77 points or more in three of their last four games). If the Hurricanes can improve their poor shooting from the free throw line (66.6 FT%), they may just have enough going for them to surprise fans and critics in the tournament.

Laura Bragato is an Italian Instagram model known for being the “sexy face of football” after posting pictures of herself wearing the jerseys of Italy’s biggest clubs, such as Juventus, Inter Milan, Napoli, and Roma.  And according to Bragato, it will be her and her belfies will be what sends Juventus through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

According to the Daily Star, Bragato said “There’s a saying in Italian, which basically says that in life sometimes you need ‘butt’, in other words, luck to succeed.”

via Daily Star:

“And people have been saying that my bum brings good luck, so I felt like sharing that first photo in support of Roma, who were playing that night. And it worked. So people started asking me to do the same for their favorite team each week, and it became so popular in such little time. Of course, I will support Juventus against Tottenham, and I’m pretty sure Juventus will win, sorry, that’s how it is.”

Laura, a law student who currently lives in Milan, attributes many of her 500,000 followers to her football-themed photos.

NCAA Tournament Bracketology 2018: The 6th Seeds

Aside from a fifth seed being upset by a 12th seed, the six seed is usually the next in line in terms of being selected as upset-prone. However, if the way this season has transpired is any indication, the disparity in talent between most of the programs in the tournament is fairly minuscule. What this means is that the seeding system, especially for this year, is fairly arbitrary in that it does not accurately project how most of these teams will perform come March Madness. Nevertheless, every team that makes the tournament has to be placed somewhere and all of the following projected sixth seeds have high enough ceilings from a competitive standpoint to be considered great, but ultimately lacks the marquee wins needed to be considered elite. Still, it would be unwise to assume that any of the sixth seeds are overrated as every one of them has been especially deadly on either offense or defense at some point during the season.

South Region:
1. TCU Horned Frogs

If their defense was not so terrible (76.3 PAPG), the Horned Frogs could very well be near or at the top of the NCAA Tournament seeding. Scoring 83.6 points per game, the Horned Frogs have the exceptional shooters and the cerebral ball facilitators (18.9 APG) to make a serious run in the tournament. However, they will have to cut back on the costly turnovers (13 TPG) if they hope to make the most of what is an incredibly gifted offensive unit.

West Region:
1. Kentucky Wildcats

There was a time not so long ago when the Wildcats were in a similar situation as being underrated due to their inconsistent play during the regular season. Ultimately, that team made it to the National Title game as an eighth seed, a feat that is rarely accomplished in such a high-pressure postseason affair. If the Wildcats hope to defy expectations again, they will need to improve their perimeter shooting accuracy (34.8 3P%) and turnover rate (13 TPG).

East Region:
1. Florida Gators

While the Gators are certainly not the elite shooting team they were at the start of the regular season, they have been far more efficient in their last three wins, with two of those victories coming over ranked SEC opponents. In order for the Gators to maintain their now budding offense, they will need to be better at moving the ball around to their open shooters lest they succumb to being one-dimensional yet again.

Midwest Region:
1. West Virginia Mountaineers

Offensively, the Mountaineers are a potent scoring force that can get to the basket with relative ease while using their physical strength to garner extra opportunities off of the glass. However, the Mountaineers full court press defense needs to improve mightily if they hope to stand a chance against reputable competition as the tournament progresses into the later rounds.

Shutterstock

A Utica College student, identified as Fahrudin Omerovic, 23, was arrested and charged with four counts of terroristic threats against the school, according to Utica Police Department spokesman Lt. Bryan Coromato. With investigators believing he was behind recent, suspicious phone calls that caused the school to recently go on lockdown, it was believed that he used a mobile phone app to disguise his identity.

What happened?

As mentioned, authorities believe that Omerovic, a student at the school, had been behind a phone call that instigated a lockdown this past Monday, lasting around six hours. It is believed that he had been on campus during the lockdown and was able to blend in with the crowds.

Initially able to hide his identity, Omerovic was later found by police in his own home, with the help of local security systems. No weapons were found at the residence, despite his original threats entailing that he had a gun.

After the Monday lockdown, Omerovic allegedly threatened the school a second time, although the school did go on lockdown, with police no longer defining him as a credible threat. Police later found Omerovic at his home in Utica.

During his first court appearance on Tuesday, Omerovic reportedly apologized for the incident, claiming that he did not intend to cause any harm.

Who is Fahrudin Omerovic?

Although Omerovic was physically on-campus during the lockdown, he took online courses for the school, which still granted him access to the college’s facilities, according to police. According to WHAM, one eyewitness claimed another student comforted him among a group other other students, reportedly telling him that “things will be okay, we will get through this,” during the lockdown.

According to ABC News, Omerovic was eventually sent to the Oneida County Jail on $100,000 cash or $250,000 bond. During his initial hearing, a judge denied a request to lower bail from Omerovic’s attorneys. The investigation is currently ongoing.

As this is a developing story, more information will be updated as made available.

We Had A Nice Run, Humanity: Amazon Alexa Is Literally Laughing At People

The age of artificial intelligence is officially upon us, and with it come fears about its future and doubts about our ability to control it.

Most of humanity’s first introduction to A.I., other than Siri, was Amazon’s Alexa. I myself am actually a first-generation Echo owner. Affectionately offered to as “my robot”, Alexa is my alarm clock, radio, personal assistant, and Bluetooth speaker all-in-one. I love my robot, and she loves me. Or at least I thought.

Look, there has always been something inherently sketchy about an artificial intelligence device sitting in your bedroom that’s always listening, but being that I’m just a regular citizen, and not, let’s say, Edward Snowden, the whole potential privacy violation never bothered me. Amazon and the FBI want to listen to me and my friends debate why Boss Baby was better than Coco? Go for it. I can tolerate the occasional breach of my privacy. That I can live with.

But what I absolutely cannot live with is end-times, Skynet-like behavior from my Alexa. Now, while my Alexa has been relatively un-Satan like (as far as I know), apparently other Alexas have gone full robot-overtaking-humanity mode, laughing maniacally and disobeying commands left and right.

via The Verge:

Over the past few days, users with Alexa-enabled devices have reported hearing strange, unprompted laughter. Amazon responded to the creepiness in a statement to The Verge, saying, “We’re aware of this and working to fix it.”

As noted in media reports and a trending Twitter moment, Alexa laughs without being prompted to wake. People on Twitter and Reddit reported that they thought it was an actual person laughing near them, which can be scary when you’re home alone. Many responded to the cackling sounds by unplugging their Alexa-enabled devices.

Yeah, NOPE. No thank you. Pervy, middle-aged FBI agents eavesdropping on my stoned ramblings is one thing, but giving me flashforwards of an all-out man-vs-machine war because Alexa has a case of the giggle is absolutely unacceptable.

Amazon, you essentially own the planet at this point, so how about you get your artificial intelligence under control, eh?

Top 5 Worst Choke Jobs In March Madness History

No month offers as much to the fan of the upset and the underdog as March, and no round of the Big Dance offers as much potential for an upset as the first round when the best teams in the nation face the teams that just barely squeaked into the tournament. Sure, there are other rounds with upset potential, and yeah, these first-round games are often over well before the final buzzer, but when they’re close, they’re as exciting as anything you’ll see all year. And when they end up in an upset? That’s sports history, baby. Let’s take a look at some of the great teams who never were as we try to figure out which of these choke artists fell the hardest.

Duke 2012 — N0. 2 Seed

Instagram Photo

The Blue Devils entered the Big Dance in 2012 expecting to simply outpace and out-coach their way to another title. Led by Coach Mike Krzyzewski and a rotation of skilled scorers that included Austin Rivers, brothers Mason and Marshall Plumlee, and Seth Curry, Duke was coming off another dominant season and were looking forward to a long tournament run. Then, in the first game of the tournament, they ran into 15th-seeded Lehigh.

Playing in Greensboro, NC, less than an hour from Duke’s home stadium, the odds seemed stacked against Lehigh from the beginning, with Duke being favored going in by 12.5 points. That clearly didn’t sit well with Lehigh guard C.J. McCollum, who kept his team in the game while Duke’s poor shooting stalled them from ever pulling away.

McCollum and the Mountain Hawks would eventually pull away in the second half behind a suddenly-raucous Greensboro Coliseum crowd, as he finished with 30 points to lead Lehigh to a stunning 75-70 victory.

Kansas 2005 — No. 2 Seed

Instagram Photo

The 2005 Kansas Jayhawks may go down as one of the great what-could-have-been teams in recent college basketball history. Led by seniors Wayne Simien and Keith Langford, two players who had combined to average over 34 points-per-game, Kansas began the season with a strong 20-1 record and was and viewed as perhaps the most seasoned team entering the season’s final stretch.  Then things just started to…unravel.

Kansas would lose five of its next eight games after that 20-1 start, including back-to-back overtime losses by a combined three points. This would seem to indicate that Kansas could have easily won more games than it did, except they lost the next game to No. 21 Oklahoma by five. Then, three games later, they lost again. Then, in the Big 10 Tournament, they lost again. So can you guess what happened when they entered the tournament to face 14-seeded Bucknell? They lost, by one point on a last-second hook shot by Chris McNaughton.

At least those Jayhawks were, you know, consistently disappointing. That counts for something! (It doesn’t.)

1993 Arizona — No. 2 Seed

Instagram Photo

This Arizona Wildcats team may not have had any historically big names on it, but it was still flat-out stacked with scoring. Four players averaged over 11 points-per-game for the Wildcats in ’93, with Chris Mills chipping in over 20 per game as the Wildcats went 22-1 to end their season. They were a damn good team, and they really did look it for stretches of their first-round game against 15-seed Santa Clara. At one point, the Wildcats even went on a 25-0 run. 25 straight points. And they lost. How?

Well, there might be two decent-to-good reasons. First, Santa Clara had a guy named Steve Nash playing point guard, and he’s pretty good. Second, Arizona failed to score a point for 15 minutes straight in the second half. It ended up being only a 3-point victory for Santa Clara, but it still marked only the second time that a 2-seed was eliminated in the first round.

Syracuse 1991 — No. 2 Seed

Instagram Photo

Who better to follow up Arizona’s exit in ’93 than the original 2-seed chokers in Syracuse? The Orange were in unprecedented territory when they met 15-seed Richmond in the 1991 tournament. Led by Billy Owens, a first-team All-American who would go on to be the third overall pick in that year’s NBA draft, the Orange were looked to make a deep run. Instead, they just made history, becoming the first 2-seed to ever get bounced in the first round of the tournament. Richmond surged up and down the court, securing a quick lead that they would not relinquish. By the end of the game, over 25 million viewers were watching at home, as CBS had switched its broadcast over to watch Richmond became the first 15-seed to ever win a tournament game.

Duke 2014 — No. 2 Seed

Instagram Photo

Duke needed to appear twice on this list because…well because they just did. It’s Duke. They can handle it.

This 2014 Duke squad was basically the perfect assemblage of upperclassmen and incoming talents; led by two future first-round picks in Jabari Parker and Rodney Hood, Coach K built his rotations around Parker’s dynamic size and the system knowledge of his guards Quinn Cook and Tyler Thornton. And those rotations really worked.

Despite a late-season loss to Wake Forest, Duke was viewed as having its most fully-assembled team in years. Even in their first-round matchup against 15-seed Mercer, Duke looked, if not overwhelming, at least strong throughout. They held a five-point lead late in the second half, just needing to pull away a bit to secure their trip to the next round. Enter: a 20-5 run by Mercer. You read that correctly: Mercer went on a 20-5 run against Mike Krzyzewski-led team with the season on the line.

And that, my friends, is why Duke needed to be on here twice.

What did we get wrong? What did we get right? Want to reminisce about some March Madness trauma you feel we overlooked? Leave us a comment and let us know which Duke choke job we foolishly overlooked!

The Fyre Festival Guy Is Facing 40 Years In Prison

Fyre

Last Spring, Fyre Festival was supposed to revolutionize party-going with its promises of luxurious amenities and rubbing elbows with celebrities.

However, as we all now know, the end product couldn’t be further from the truth, as the island that Fyre was located on lacked all the basic amenities: lodging, food, water, etc. Millennials showed up expecting days of sunshine and alcohol and ended up with hours of fright and confusion.

Now, a year after the world’s most infamous music festival, the chickens have come home to roost for Billy McFarland and the rest of the Fyre Festival brass.

On Tuesday, March 6, McFarland admitted in court that he defrauded investors when creating Fyre Festival and pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to two counts of wire fraud.

Each count carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

via WSJ:

Fyre Festival had been scheduled to take place last spring, with tickets costing up to $250,000 a person for one weekend. Thousands were expected to attend, and the event was marketed to millennials on social media as “the cultural experience of the decade.” Instead, concertgoers arrived to a logistical meltdown, resulting in the festival’s abrupt cancellation.

In raising money for Fyre Festival, Mr. McFarland caused at least 80 investors and a ticket vendor to lose a total of more than $26 million, the government said. Mr. McFarland said in court that he came up with the idea for the concert as a way to promote a digital app he had launched in 2016 through Fyre Media Inc. The app was envisioned to allow people to book music artists for concerts.

To secure funding for the festival, Mr. McFarland admitted to lying to investors about the financial condition of Fyre Media. He tricked one ticket vendor into buying an advance block of tickets for $2 million by providing company statements that grossly inflated its revenue and income, according to prosecutors.

McFarland is scheduled to be sentenced on June 21.

St. Patrick’s Day is soon upon us and what better way to celebrate than watching a parade! Well, there’s actually getting to be on the float, but we can’t all be so lucky. Besides, I’m sure that the people riding on the floats wish they could be watching the whole thing, too! There are bound to be parades throughout the United States honoring the holiday, so we’ll focus on four major ports: Chicago, Boston, New York City and Dallas.

Take a look! Even if you cannot go to these parades in person, many of them are working with broadcasters to allow you to live stream the event, not to mention airing it on television. In addition, people lucky enough to go can enjoy other festivities in the areas, like a big holiday breakfast! Remember, if all else fails, remember to wear green. Even if you lock yourself in the house all day, the leprechauns will get you! Also, keep in mind that the times are based on each area’s respective time zones!

St. Patrick’s Day Parade Chicago

Time: Technically, the parade doesn’t officially start until 12:00 PM, but things actually kick off with coloring the Chicago River green at 9:00 AM
Date: March 17, 2018
Location: The intersection of Columbus and Balbo Drives at noon, continuing north of Columbus until concluding at Monroe Street
Details: I mentioned the Chicago River gets turned green for the day, right?

St. Patrick’s Day Parade Boston

Time: Technically, 12:30 PM, but there is a St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast at the Ironworkers Local 7 Union Hall before the event at 10:00 PM
Date: March 17, 2018
Location: South Boston, starting at the Broadway Station
Details: I mentioned the big breakfast that lasts before the parade, too, right? The event will also be able to watch on a live stream on necn.com., although you probably need to be there in person for the breakfast.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade New York City

Time: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Date: March 17, 2018
Location: 5th Avenue between 44th Street and 79th Street
Details: The Parade can also be watched live on NBCNewYork.com beginning at 11:00 AM.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade Dallas

Time: 11:00 AM
Date: March 17, 2018
Location: The parade starts on Greenville at Blackwell Street, ending on Yale Blvd/SMU Blvd at 75 Central Expressway
Details: The parade’s profits aid the GAABA Scholarship Fund. More than $115,000 in scholarship money has been awarded to Dallas ISD students.

Laura Bragato is known in Italy for being “sexy face of football.” Bragato, an Instagram model, got the nickname from posting pictures of herself wearing the jerseys of Italy’s most famous soccer teams, such as Milan, Napoli, Juventus and Roma.  According to Bragato, her butt and belfies will be what pushes Juventus through to past Tottenham Hotspur to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

The Big 12 Tournament is finally here, showcasing the very best college basketball teams of the mid-west. Once again, the Kansas State Jayhawks enter as the favorites to win the tournament, entering as the No. 1 seeded team in their division. The Jayhawks have won the most Big 12 Tournaments out of any other team in the tournament, with 10 championship wins. The Texas Tech Red Raiders appears to be the team that is second-most likely to win the tournament, as they’re ranked right behind Kansas State as the No. 2 seeded team in the series.

Who do you think is going to win this tournament? The Jayhawks seem to be the most obvious bet. They’re a team who won 14 consecutive and 61 overall conference titles, which is an NCAA record. However, they may be the No. 1 seeded team going into this tournament, but last year, they were also ranked number one, but ended up losing the tournament to the No. 4 seed team, the Iowa State Cyclones who became the 2018 Big 12 Tournament Champions.

International Women’s Day Images 2018: Inspirational Photos & Must-See Pictures

Happy International Women’s Day! It’s a time set aside to celebrate the women who mean so much to your lives and to the world at large. Our Earth has given birth to many talented, strong, beautiful women who many of us would be nothing without. Literally, we wouldn’t have been born without a woman carrying us around for about nine months.

You can commemorate International Women’s Day in many ways. Celebrate the rights gained from the sacrifices of many brave women (and men who listened) over the past 100 years, who put their necks out for other women to be allowed to vote and pursue a career.

Every year on March 8, the world takes notice of the women that matter in our lives. They can be your mom, girlfriend, wife, friend (with or without benefits), co-worker, doctor, teacher, or even a competitor who you admire and tests your wits. These are women who helped shape your life, whether you’re male, female or nonbinary.

Women’s Day was first introduced by the United States in 1909 (at the time, the day was only on the national level). This holiday would evenually phase out until the commies picked up the ball and the Soviets started celebrating International Women’s Day in the 1920s. By 1975, the United Nations started recognizing the holiday. Each year, the U.N. places a particular social or political theme on the day. For example, in 2014 the theme was “Equality for Women is Progress for All” and in 2008 the theme was “Investing in Women and Girls.” This year, the U.N.’s theme for International Women’s Day is called “Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives”.

International Woman’s Day doesn’t neccessarily have to be political. This day can also be about taking notice of the women you love, apperciate, and respect. Ironically, they’re the ones who help many guys feel like a real man.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University has been placed on suspension while the university investigates violations of the student code of conduct.

According to reports, ECU announced on Friday, March 2, that Sigma Alpha Epsilon had been placed on deferred suspension a year ago for violations of ECU’s and the fraternity’s hazing policy.

The university said that they would continue to investigate the behavior of individual members of SAE.

SAE is one of East Carolina’s 23 fraternities.

via The News & Observer:

The fraternity was put on a “redevelopment plan” after the suspension, but was not following the terms of the agreement, which led to the closure. The fraternity will be closed for a period of four years, ECU officials said.

“ECU shares, with the national organizations, alumni and advisors, the commitment to holding organizations and students accountable for actions that do not meet expectations,” Virginia Hardy, ECU’s vice chancellor for student affairs, said in a news release. “We will continue our efforts to strengthen our campus fraternities, sororities and all student organizations as a key part of the student experience at ECU.”

The closure of SAE marks the third fraternity closed at East Carolina this year.

This is the latest fraternity suspension in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities.

According to the San Bernardino County sheriff’s office, the 14-year-old boy was taken into custody on Tuesday, March 6, after authorities found fake guns, counterfeit money, bullet-proof vests and other law enforcement-related items in his home.

Reports indicate that the teen posed as a sheriff in several incidents in San Bernardino County. During one of those incidents, the boy allegedly initiated a traffic stop on a civilian.

After their investigation, police found that not only did the boy conduct a traffic stop, but he also interacted with two other civilians while posing as a police officer in the same night.

The investigation began Monday when deputies were called out to a home in the 13600 block of Mica Avenue in Victorville. The caller said someone had pulled a white Explorer into their driveway with red and blue lights flashing, the sheriff’s statement said. The vehicle had no marking indicating it was a Sheriff’s Department vehicle or even a law enforcement vehicle, the caller said.

The person told deputies someone in a sheriff’s uniform wearing a holster and what appeared to be a firearm walked up to the door and told everyone inside he was investigating a domestic disturbance, officials said.

“The homeowner informed him there was no problem and they had not placed a call to the police,” the release said. The unidentified person in the uniform then tried to open the homeowner’s door, but it was locked. The fake deputy, later determined to be the 14-year-old, got back into the Explorer and left after a short confrontation with the caller. Later, the person notified authorities of the suspicious encounter.

Following his arrest, the teen was booked into High Desert Juvenile Detention Center.

For any team that is considered a top-five seed or better, it’s fairly safe to assume that they are amongst some of the more exceptional programs that exist in this wildly unpredictable sport. However, irrespective of what given ranking a team is considered, they still have to run through a difficult gauntlet of embittered programs that are looking to prove that they were disrespected by the committee that seeded them initially. Ultimately, better seeding only serves as a brief buffer from facing the best of the best in college basketball, which could be detrimental to pretenders that are ill-prepared to take on a grueling tournament format. However, the following four programs have proven time and again that they are capable of not only beating elite competition but that they can do it consistently in high-pressure situations. Considering how wide open this season has been from a competitive standpoint, any one of these teams could very well compete for and win a National Title.

South Region:
1. Ohio State Buckeyes

Although losing a defensive grudge match to the Nittany Lions early on in the Big Ten Tournament did not help the Buckeyes from a seeding perspective, this is still a program that can match up with even the most physically domineering teams in college basketball (66.7 PAPG). If the Buckeyes can be a bit more clutch when shooting perimeter shots (35.3 3P%), they could be one of the scrappier and more successful teams in the NCAA Tournament.

West Region:
1. Arizona Wildcats

When Deandre Ayton and Allonzo Trier are on the floor, the Wildcats have an elite roster that could very well win a National Title when all is said and done. As a whole though, this team is incredibly efficient when shooting from the field (51 FG%) and are extremely clutch when shooting from the free throw line (76.4 FT%). If the Wildcats can cut done on the turnovers (13 TPG), they are clearly set up to go far in the tournament.

East Region:
1. Clemson Tigers

As great and resilient as the Tigers have been defensively this season (65.3 PAPG), their offense has been wildly inconsistent, especially against some of the more elite defenses in college basketball. For the Tigers to advance far in the tournament, they need to be a bit more tenacious at garnering rebounds off of the glass (35.5 RPG) if they hope to elevate their play offensively.

Midwest Region:
1. Gonzaga Bulldogs

Statistically, the Bulldogs have posted some of the best team numbers in college basketball this season. Averaging 84.5 points and 39.9 rebounds per game, the Bulldogs have the sizeable athletes that can get to the basket and score while playing the offensive glass effectively to garner themselves extra opportunities. Unless the Bulldogs have a meltdown during the tournament, there is no reason why this team could not make it to their second consecutive National Title game.

Also wounded in the shooting was a 17-year-old boy, a junior and member of the football team. Both were rushed to UAB Hospital in separate Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service trucks.

The boy was initially said to be critically injured, but hospital officials by 7:30 p.m. said he was seen in the emergency department and was no longer at the hospital. He was shot in the leg, and was later questioned at police headquarters. About an hour earlier, a woman at the police station who said she was the boy’s mother, said she had not been told his condition, but she did not believe he had a gun.

The shooting comes at a tumultuous time in our nation following the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead.

Conference Tournaments are the perfect prefix to March Madness. It gives us a little taste of what we can expect in the NCAA Tournament, and it’s the last hope for many teams to turn around a previously sub-par season. Time and time again, these tourneys have served as a platform for teams to do the unexpected by winning their conference and gaining a bid to the next level. Cinderella roles may peak in the big tourney, but it all starts at the conference level.

Check out our Top 5 list of Conference Champions who were truly unexpected and extraordinary.

5. 1994 Big East: Providence Over Georgetown

Providence College got off to a slow start in the 1993-94 season, starting 5-8 in conference play. But late in the season, the Friars got going. They entered the Big East tournament as the sixth seed, and in the semifinals, they shocked No. 3 Connecticut with a 69-67 win. The Friars followed that upset with a 74-64 win over Georgetown to clinch their first Big East title.

4. 2001 Big Ten: Iowa Over Indiana

Iowa came into the Big Ten tourney with a respectable 18-11 record. However, the last third of their regular season they finished 1-7, playing without their injured star Luke Recker. Things weren’t looking good for the Hawkeyes. But, their beat-up team went on to reel off four wins in four days, including a 63-61 squeaker over Indiana, to win a Big Ten conference championship.

3. 1993 Big Eight: Missouri Over Kansas State

The Tigers lost seven of their last eight pre-tournament games and entered the Big Eight tournament with a 16-13 record overall and 5-9 in conference play. But the team played its best game of the season in the first round to blow out No. 21 Oklahoma State, 81-62. The Tigers then downed Iowa State in the semifinals and followed the next day with a 68-56 win over Kansas State for a conference title.

2. 2000 Conference USA: Saint Louis Over DePaul

Saint Louis was 15-13 in the regular season and just 7-9 in their conference before heading into the Conference USA tournament. Their impressive run started by beating Southern Miss and a Kenyon Martin led Cincinnati team that had already crushed St. Louis twice in the regular season. The Billikens then won their next two, making it four wins in four days against higher seeds, to gain the conference title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

1. 1983 ACC: NC State Over Virginia

In 1983, Coach Jimmy Valvano and North Carolina State had a March to remember. Their historical underdog run started in the ACC Tourney. In the semis, they beat Michael Jordan and UNC in OT, and in the finals, they narrowly topped the heavily favorited Virginia to win their first Conference Championship in nine years.

The Wolfpack is the only team on this list to continue their magic into the NCAA tournament. Valvano’s squad would go on to win it all by beating top-seeded University of Houston; a team that was on a 26-game winning streak and led by future Hall of Famers Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon.

The Wolfpack would then go on to win the NCAA Championship as well by beating top-seeded University of Houston; a team that was on a 26-game winning streak and led by future Hall of Famers Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon.
