The Sigma Pi fraternity chapter at University of Central Florida has been suspended after a stunt performed by pledges caused a building to be evacuated.  The evacuation lasted longer than an hour.

According to UCF, two Sigma Pi fraternity pledges entered a classroom in the Business Administration 1 building about 10:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, February 28.  One of the pledges wearing a Miami Heat Lebron James jersey tossed white powder in the air. The police report states that the student stood up in class and shouted, “I’m taking my talents to South Beach!”

Reports indicate that the prank carried out by the pledges was a tradition of the Sigma Pi fraternity that had been completed by other “brothers” in the past. It was also uncovered that members of the Sigma Pi leadership had coached the pledges into being deceitful in their interviews with law enforcement officers.

The white substance was later revealed to be baby powder.

According to the report, the powder landed on several students in the classroom. The second pledge was recording the powder toss with his phone, investigators said. Both young men fled the classroom.

“None of the students or the professor knew these individuals or what was happening,” the report said.

The building — a major classroom building at UCF, which houses the university’s accounting and finance departments, among other programs — was evacuated as police and hazmat crews investigated. Testing determined the powder wasn’t dangerous.

According to the university’s police department, the names of the two UCF students involved were redacted due to FERPA.

He may not have been nominated this year, but Michael Shannon probably enjoyed Oscar night as much as anybody else.

On March 4th, the 90th Annual Academy Awards aired. The movie The Shape of Water directed by Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro cleaned up, taking home the awards for Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Production Design and, finally, Best Picture. The film was also nominated for seven other awards.

The Shape of Water starred Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer. The movie tells the story of a secret government lab that houses an aquatic fish-man and the mute maid, played by Hawkins, that eventually befriends and falls in love with the fish-man. Yes, the plot sounds a little bit strange, but when you’re watching a Del Toro movie, you’re bound to encounter films with storylines like this.

Much of the cast was in attendance at the Oscars ceremony to help celebrate the movie’s achievements. One notable absence was Shannon, who plays the movie’s villain. Shannon was in a Chicago dive bar, the Old Town Ale House, watching the ceremony on mute on a small TV just above the bar. The bar is well known amongst those in the performing community in Chicago, as it is located near some of the city’s theatres and comedy clubs. Shannon is currently in Chicago directing a play and was thus unable to attend the Oscars this year.

There is something to be said for enjoying a ceremony like the Oscars by yourself. No distractions, no fuss, just you and a TV screen, watching the best movies of the year get the awards they deserve.

Shannon’s performance in The Shape of Water earned rave reviews, deservedly so, but let’s make sure another brilliant performance of his doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.

Becky Lynch is also looking to brawl tonight as she sets her sights on “Ms. Money In The Bank” Carmella. Will Lynch disarm the up-and-coming Carmella? Or will “The Queen of Staten Island” Carmella come out victorious against a certified “Irish Lass Kicker”?

Neymar Jr. has had a rough couple of weeks.

Born in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. Marquezine, whose birth name is Bruna Reis Maia, was born in Duque de Caxias. She adopted the surname Marquezine as a tribute to her grandmother.

Marquezine began acting in 2003 when she appeared on the soap opera Mulheres Apaixonadas. In 2011, she participated in Aquele Beijo playing a major role, Miss Belezinha. Played the character Lurdinha in the plot of prime time Salve Jorge in 2012. In 2013, she was tipped to star in Além do Horizonte.

This is Hilary Knight, hockey player, badass and all-around beauty.

Knight is an American Ice Hockey player and one of the leaders of the US Women’s National Hockey team. She’s also played in the Canadien Women’s Hockey League for the Boston Blades and in the National Women’s Hockey League for the Boston Pride.

Knight was born in Palo Alto, California but spent the majority of her childhood in Lake Forest, Illinois. It was there where she developed her love of hockey.

She began to get on everyone’s radar during her Freshmen year at the University of Wisconsin when she finished second on the team in goals and fifth in assists and other areas as well. Over the course of her career at Wisconsin, she killed it and was named to the US Olympic team for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, where she helped the women earn the silver medal. She would make the team again in 2014, again winning the silver. Finally, in 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the US women would take home the gold medal, thanks in no small part to the play of Knight.

Oh, and she also made her official SNL debut on March 3rd, so a future in show business isn’t entirely out of the question.

So, not only is she a great hockey player, but she’s beautiful to boot. Knight embodies the “girl next door” motif, one that you could hang out with and bring home to mom one day.

Now, that it is March, March Madness is right around the corner! Taking a look at San Antonio, we already know that Selection Sunday will take place on March 11 for 2018. The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee will reveal which 68 teams are going to play in the upcoming basketball championships. For many, this is the most hectic week of the whole college basketball season, yet it is still fun to watch. What will happen?

Remember, TBS will televise the event on TBS – Sunday, March 11, at 6 p.m. ET, also airing this year’s NCAA Final Four National Semifinals on Saturday, March 31, along with the National Championship on Monday, April 2.

Since the tournament began in 1939, UCLA has the most titles with 11. Kentucky is a close second with eight titles and North Carolina comes out at third with six. How are the teams selected?

Arriving in New York City for the beginning of the selection process, committee members will cast hundreds of ballots and debate over the teams over the next five days. According to NCAA, three phases make up the process:

I. Select the 36 best at-large teams;
II. Seed the field of 68 teams; and
III. Place the teams into the championship bracket.

There are many rules and regulations that need to be adhered to during the process. For example, all votes are conducted by a secret ballot. In addition, members are only allowed to answer only general, factual questions about teams in the conference the individual represents;

As college fans prep themselves for another season of March Madness fun, we’ll take a look back at last year’s epic tournament. Only the cream of the crop in college basketball were able to earn a spot in the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

A total of 68 teams out of 336 were selected to compete in four weeks of March Madness. From March 14 to April 3, the battle lines were drawn, as the best in college basketball competed for the right to be called that year’s March Madness champions. They continued to plow through the South Regional division all throughout March, taking out teams such as Arkansas (72-65), Butler (92-80), and Kentucky (75-73).

North Carolina almost got knocked out of the final four in a close game against Oregon. The Tar Heels only narrowly defeated the Ducks, with a score of 77-76.

The Tar Heels moved onto the finals to face off against a team of hungry Bulldogs. On April 3rd, North Carolina reigned supreme, defeating Gonzaga in the National Championship Game to become the 2017 March Madness champions.

On March 7th, a water main located near Buford Highway in Doraville burst, spilling water across the road, forcing its closure. According to WSB 24-Traffic Center, water has been flowing onto the highway in Doraville since before 4:30 AM.

Dekalb County released the following statement regarding the emergency:

“In an abundance of caution for our citizens and to protect the public from any potential health hazards, residents in the affected area are being asked to boil water for at least one minute after water comes to a rolling boil prior to drinking, cooking or preparing baby food.”

This is an emerging story and will be updated as more news comes in.

Workers have isolated the water main break and currently investigating the cause and assess the damage to the water system and restore pressure.

The Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity is being accused of taking sexually explicit photographs taken without consent before distributing them via email.

According to the lawsuit, an unidentified is woman suing the national Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity organization and the school’s chapter, Gamma Chi Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha. Court documents state the allegations by “Jane Doe” are “of a highly sensitive and personal matter” and that there “is a high risk of retaliatory harm.”

The lawsuit says that the Lambda Chi Alpha president “did not inform the members to delete the email chain or photos; nor did he instruct them to cease the internal derogatory commentary being made.”

“A crowd of people, members and non-members alike, converged in the bathroom as Jane Doe and the Associate Member were locked in the bathroom stall,” the lawsuit states, adding that many “are believed to have taken photographs and video.”

The lawsuit states the “Picture Pledge” was one of several pledges with tasks, though the lawsuit also notes that fraternity members denied to the university that there was such a thing as a “Picture Pledge.” The lawsuit faults the fraternity for inaction in having “failed to implement enforcement policies and procedures that ensured compliance with their stated rules prohibiting hazing.”

The “Picture Pledge,” according to the lawsuit, “reached his phone over the locked stall door and, without the consent or knowledge of Jane Doe took multiple photographs of Jane Doe and the Associate Member engaged in explicit sexual conduct.”

Hating on fraternities is the new black.

Everywhere you turn, there’s a think-piece here and an op-ed there about the toxicity of fraternity culture and how harmful it is to society, the latest of which coming from The Massachusetts Daily Collegian, the student newspaper of the University of Massachusetts.

The article, titled “Fraternity culture is problematic” (some hot take ya got there, kid!), delves into fraternities, their downfalls (of which I acknowledge there are many) and how their presence in the social scene “ruins partying.”

Now, my issue is not so much with the points the author made, but the way that she frames her examples and excludes information in order to make a stronger case.

For example, at one point, the author of the article outright states:

“I’d like to note that I have specifically not mentioned sororities because they do not really create issues like their male counterparts. Sororities do not treat female party guests – or their sexuality – like an admission ticket.”

This is the equivalent of complimenting a house cat for not trying to murder you.

Yes, the cat technically has not tried to murder you, but only because they’re physically incapable. In fact, studies have shown that if cats were large enough, then they would actually try to kill you. So yes, while sororities may not “treat party guests like an admission ticket,” it’s only because they haven’t had the opportunity.

Women are every bit as vindictive, superficial and judgemental as men so I can guarantee that if a school’s elite sorority were the ones hosting the parties, they’d be just as selective as their male counterparts. You can almost hear the soundbites from Alexa and Rachel now:

“Ew, did you hear the Alpha Chi guys want to come to tonight’s party?”

“Um, gross. There’s like six of them and like half of them are bald and fat. No way are they getting in.”

And in case you needed any more proof that “sorority chicks” are just like “frat bros,” I point you to the University of Miami and the University of Pittsburgh, who have recently suspended sorority chapters due to hazing and alcohol violations.

Fraternities are broken and are not long for this world (I’ve even written as much), but acting like the societal issues frats suffer from and cause are due to gender, and not opportunity is downright sexist. Did you know that Penn State sorority members aren’t even allowed to live together in a house because Pennsylvania state law would consider it a brothel? The difference between sororities and fraternities isn’t influenced by gender, but rather circumstance.

If fraternity culture troubles you so, then put it out of sight and out of mind. Think frat bros are pigs? Don’t associate with them. Think frat parties are dangerous? Don’t go to them. Think they’re drugging the jungle juice (which is deplorable)? Don’t drink it. The only thing forcing you to participate in Greek Life is the social standards you’re holding yourself to — nothing more and nothing less. I knew plenty of people at Rutgers who never stepped inside a fraternity house during their entire time at school and had just as much fun as anyone.

But as long as you keep cutting the line to get into the party because you and your cute friends have ratio (“I benefit from Greek culture…My friends and I can usually get into parties without trouble” she writes), you’re just as much a part of the problem as the men are.

Get ready for some March Madness with the Pac-12 Tournament! Arizona is looking very good going into this tournament as the No. 1 overall seed in the series. The Wildcats from Arizona are surely the team to beat. From the last four out of five tournaments, the first and second seeds made it to the finals of the Pac-12 Tournament. The Wildcats aren’t particularly dominant themselves, but Ayton is a beast on that basketball court. He won the title of both Player and Freshman of the Year. He’s also a future NBA star in the making.

Being in the middle of the pack of the tournament in terms of seeding, the eighth seeds are almost always forgotten as most fans and pundits assume that they will not make it past the second round where they will ultimately have to contend with one of the top seeds in the country. However, when it comes to the unpredictable affair that is March Madness, anything can happen, especially his year. With all of the parity that has existed in college basketball this year, any of the following projected eighth seed programs could make a splash in the tournament. When picking any of these teams to get past the second round, it is important to bear in mind that while they do have the athletes and dynamic skill sets needed to go far in the postseason, they also possess their fair share of weaknesses that could just as easily see them fall in the first round before they ever get a chance to prove themselves.

South Region:
1. Houston Cougars

A great defensive program that is capable of scoring from long range (39.1 3P%), the Cougars have both the athletes and composure to take down any college basketball giant that stands in their way. If leading scorer Rob Gray can continue to be a threat as an aggressor that is adept at getting to the rim, the Cougars have a decent chance of making it out of the first weekend of the tournament.

West Region:
1. Creighton Blue Jays

Lackadaisical on defense (74.3 PAPG) yet highly efficient when it comes to shooting the basketball (84.8 PPG), the Blue Jays have the moxie and skilled shooters to overwhelm their opponent consistently. On top of being adept at shooting from the field (49.9 FG%), the Blue Jays are incredibly consistent at making their free throws (75 FT%), an underrated skill that will serve them well down the stretch of tight contests in the tournament.

East Region:
1. Rhode Island Rams

Although it would be fair to judge the Rams for their recent slip-ups in their losses to St. Joseph’s and Davidson, they still possess a disciplined defense that is tenacious when it comes to taking the ball away from their opponents (eight SPG). However, the Rams need to be a bit more consistent when it comes to shooting from the perimeter if they hope to be competitive in the tournament (33.8 3P%).

Midwest Region:
1. Oklahoma Sooners

Given how poorly the Sooners played down the stretch of the regular season (lost seven of their last 10 games), many would question if this program deserves to be in the tournament at all. Still, the Sooners are unquestionably one of the most prolific scoring teams in college basketball (86 PPG) and will need every bit of it if they hope to go any further than the initial weekend of the tournament.
