March For Our Lives

YouTube/Face The Nation

Five teen survivors of the school shooting massacre in Florida last week are calling for a march on Washington.

What was said and what is being planned?

According to ABC News, while appearing on “This Week,” Cameron Kasky, an 11th-grader, gave the following statement:

“People keep asking us, ‘What about the Stoneman Douglas shooting is going to be different, because this has happened before and change hasn’t come? This is it.”

“People are saying that it’s not time to talk about gun control. And we can respect that. Here’s a time. March 24th in every single city. We are going to be marching together as students begging for our lives.”

“This isn’t about the GOP. This isn’t about the Democrats. This is about the adults. We feel neglected and at this point, you’re either with us or against us.”

One student asked for ‘everyday kids just like us’

Kasky appeared with four of this classmates, other survivors of the Florida shooting: Emma Gonzalez, David Hogg, Alex Wind and Jaclyn Corin. Gonzalez added that the students wanted to have conversations with local politicians concerning the incident, saying, “We want to give them the opportunity to be on the right side of this.”

She added that all kinds of kids would be needed in the event:

“The kids who need to take part in this are kids, everyday kids just like us. They are students who need to understand that this can very quickly happen to them … They need to join us, and they need to help us get our message across. All students should realize that a school shooting could happen anywhere.”

As seen above, the students have made other media appearances since the shooting, such as appearing on CNN and the CBS program, Face The Nation.

College Basketball Power Rankings 2018: Week 16 Rankings

For any program that has been ranked in the top-10 this season, it has been a tumultuous undertaking to be considered an elite team for more than a week. Most recently, six of the top ten teams in the country lost this past week with five of those programs losing to unranked opponents. Although the notion of college basketball being rife with parity is hardly anything new, it is the unprecedented frequency of these upsets that has truly befuddled critics and fans alike. As a result, there is not a single stand out team that should be considered the favorite to the win the National Title by the beginning of April. As we close in on the end of the regular season and near the start of the postseason, bubble programs will fight vigorously for a spot in the limelight in an attempt to bolster their resumes with the hopes of competing in the NCAA Tournament come March.

1. Virginia Cavaliers

Make no mistake, the disparity in competitiveness between every team in these rankings is relatively slim. However, the Cavaliers are rightfully deserving of being considered the best program in the country (for now) given the fact that they have only lost two games and that their defense is by far the best that college basketball has to offer.

2. Michigan State Spartans

Down by as many as 23 points to Northwestern on Saturday, the Spartans rallied valiantly to avoid the shocking upset on the road. Like every program in college basketball, the Spartans are fallible and are susceptible to being defeated when their athletic playmakers fail to play up to their potential.

3. Villanova Wildcats

Crushing the Musketeers on the road, the Wildcats have to be feeling both incredibly motivated and euphoric after dispatching a conference opponent that had not lost at home until Saturday evening. Although their inability to rebound consistently could be problematic against some of the more lengthy teams in college basketball, the Wildcats have the accurate shooters and unselfish playmakers to overcome this concerning weakness.

4. Xavier Musketeers

Getting blown out on your home court is never fun. However, when it happens against a shorthanded Villanova program, it makes the loss all the more devastating. Still, the Musketeers have a slim lead in the Big East standings, something that they need to be wary about as the end of the regular season draws closer.

5. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Tied with Kansas for the lead in the Big 12 standings, the Red Raiders have to be kicking themselves for losing to an inferior Baylor program on Saturday. However, with a rematch against Kansas looming large this week, the Red Raiders can emphatically stake their claim as the best team in the Big 12 with a win on Saturday.

6. Duke Blue Devils

Don’t look now, but the Blue Devils are actually looking like a strong defensive team…without Marvin Bagley III. Winning their last three games without the superstar big man, Duke fans have to be fairly encouraged of how great their program to be once all of their elite athletes are on the court at the same time.

7. Gonzaga Bulldogs

As they usually do, the Bulldogs are currently rolling easily through the West Coast Conference. Looking much better defensively in recent weeks, Gonzaga has the playmakers to be a dynamic program that could make another run at being in the National Title game.

8. Kansas Jayhawks

Winning in dramatic comeback fashion against West Virginia on Saturday, the Jayhawks are refusing to relinquish what has been their conference to lose the last 15 years. At the very least, the Jayhawks appear poised to share the title by the end of the season.

9. North Carolina Tar Heels

Scoring 82 points or more during their five-game winning streak, the Tar Heels are showing the nation what they are capable of when their offense is getting production from their athletic albeit streak shooters. Although their defensive issues are a less than ideal blemish, the Tar Heels have not appeared to be affected by this glaring weakness recently.

10. Cincinnati Bearcats

Losing to both Houston and Wichita State this past week, the Bearcats have almost completely relinquished their hold on the top spot in the American Conference. Considering their offense is one-dimensional and unreliable, the Bearcats need their defense to be nothing less than great if they hope to win consistently.

11. Purdue Boilermakers

Although it may not seem impressive, the Boilermakers Sunday afternoon win over Penn State was crucial for them to avoid an epic free fall both within their conference and nationally speaking. If this program can get back to firing on all cylinders like they had been during the majority of the season, the Boilermakers have a great chance of making a serious run at a National Title.

12. Auburn Tigers

Yes, the Tigers defense has struggled noticeably, especially against inferior opponents within their conference. However, their physical rebounders and dynamic shooters have allowed them to be a hassle to contend with more often than not.

13. Ohio State Buckeyes

One of three teams vying for the Big 10 title, the Buckeyes have blown two opportunities to jump to the top of the standings. With their most recent loss coming at the hands of an upset-minded Wolverines program, the Buckeyes need to go back to the drawing board to ascertain why their once disciplined defense has been below average in recent weeks.

14. Arizona Wildcats

Sweeping Arizona State for the season last week, the Wildcats clearly have the potential as an efficient offensive unit to make it to a Final Four this year. However, their wildly inconsistent defense needs to be at least average for them to avoid another early exit come March.

15. Wichita State Shockers

Although the Shockers have been victims of a porous defense from time to time this season, their offense has stepped up mightily in their last four games (have scored 85 points or more in three of their last four games). With a win over a defensively stout Bearcats program, the Shockers have to be feeling great about their chances of going far in the NCAA Tournament.

16. Tennessee Volunteers

With a defense that appeared to be one of the most dominant in college basketball early last week, the Volunteers have started to slip a little bit in that department as they have allowed their opponents to score 73 points or more in two of their last three games (both losses). While this team is capable of hitting mid-range shots, they need to be more opportunistic and aggressive when pursuing the basket in transition.

17. Clemson Tigers

Although the Tigers appeared to be the most resilient program in college basketball only a couple of weeks ago, they have since struggled to hold their own both offensively and defensively. For this team to have any success in the postseason, they need to solidify what has typically been an exceptional defensive unit as their offense is not nearly consistent enough to get the job done.

18. Rhode Island Rams

After dominating their conference opponents defensively throughout most of the season, the Rams finally met their match against an underrated St. Bonaventure program on Friday. Although the loss should not discourage Rhode Island supporters, this program does need to be a bit more ruthless and consistent on offense if they hope to make a splash in the NCAA Tournament.

19. Nevada Wolf Pack

While their defense has been problematic this season (71.8 PAPG), the Wolf Pack are fortunate enough to possess four dynamic shooters that can hit shots from anywhere on the court. Similar to Creighton, the Wolf Pack will only go as far as their highly prolific offense can take them.

20. Michigan Wolverines

Scrappy, virile and gifted defensively, the Wolverines have clawed their way to one close victory after another this season. They may not be the most talented program in college basketball, but they certainly have the guts and stamina to wear down any opponent they will have to face come postseason play.

21. Saint Mary’s Gaels

Losing two of their last three contests, the Gaels have slowed down a bit in terms of being an efficient defensive program. Still, Saint Mary’s has rarely suffered any lapses this season and should finish out the season strong against Pepperdine and Santa Clara.

22. Houston Cougars

I have been advocating for the Cougars for the past couple of weeks as being a stout defensive program that is completely deserving of a spot in the rankings. Winning their last five games while holding their opponents to 65 points or less during their win streak, the Cougars are hitting their stride at the best possible time and have a strong chance of snatching the American Conference title away from Cincinnati by the end of the season.

23. West Virginia Mountaineers

Up by double digits going into the second half against Kansas, the Mountaineers once again failed to close out a contest that was within their grasp to win. With that being said, this team has the personnel and the coaching to be an intriguing competitor in the NCAA Tournament, they just have to do away with the head-scratching mistakes and the inexplicable mental lapses late in tight game affairs.

24. Creighton Blue Jays

Wildly inconsistent yet highly capable as a scoring team (85.4 PPG), the Blue Jays have been living on the fringe of these power rankings since the start of the season. Once March Madness commences, the Blue Jays could be a come out of nowhere Cinderella story or lose decisively in the first round of the tournament.

25. St. Bonaventure Bonnies

While the Bonnies may not be a prolific offensive team (77.6 PPG) or intimidating defensively (69.8 PAPG), they do just enough in these respective categories to be a consistently competitive team in the A-10 Conference. After taking down the Rhode Island Rams last week, the Bonnies are worthy of being recognized as a team that should get the benefit of the doubt on Selection Sunday.

For those who enjoy chaos and disgruntled blue blood programs losing to lesser opponents, this has been the season for you. With six of the top ten teams in the country losing last week, bracketologists have been shaking with immense anxiety as they attempt to calculate and predict the seedings for the 68 programs that will eventually make up the March Madness bracket. As the end of the regular season nears ever closer, the time to binge games and analyze the playing styles of both the notable and lesser known programs is now. Although conference tournaments will provide a nice buffer for fans and pundits to exhale a bit before March Madness commences, it is never too early to watch the game film as often as possible to get a leg up on the competition when it comes time to create and submit a winning bracket.

Fergie Net Worth 2018: How Much Is The Singer Worth?

0
0

Fergie is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She rose to fame as a member of the successful hip-hop group, The Black Eyed Peas, before starting her solo career. Her debut solo album The Dutchess (2006) saw commercial success and spawned three BillboardHot 100 number one singles; “London Bridge”, “Glamorous”, and “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” Throughout her solo career and as a member of The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie has won nine American Music Awards and eight Grammies. She’s made recent news for her unique and not so well received performance of the National Anthem for the NBA All-Star Game.

Fergie Net Worth: $45 Million

The Black Eyed Peas and her success as a solo artist have treated Fergie quite well. Let’s take a look at how it all happened below!

1984-2002

Instagram Photo

Stacy Ann Ferguson (Fergie) grew up in Hacienda Heights, California and went to Glen A. Wilson High School where she was a cheerleader, straight-A student, spelling bee champion, and Girl Scout. She studied dance and did some voiceover and acting work as a child. Most notably, she provided the voice for Sally in two made-for-television Peanuts cartoons. From 1984 to 1989, she starred on the TV show Kids Incorporated and was the longest-running cast member, appearing in the first six of the show’s nine seasons.

Fergie was a member of the female trio Wild Orchid, which she fronted with Stefanie Ridel and fellow Kids Incorporated star Renee Sandstrom. They signed with RCA Records in 1994 and produced two albums with limited success over the next seven years. Fergie left the group in 2001. She later said that she made the decision because of frustration with the band’s image and personal drug problems.

2003-2005

Instagram Photo

The Black Eyed Peas were recording their third album, Elephunk (2003), when will.i.am invited Fergie to try out for a song called “Shut Up”. She got the gig and instantly bonded with the trio, going on to record five additional songs on the album. The following spring, shortly before Elephunk came out, Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine offered Fergie a permanent spot to take over vocal duties and fill the void left by background singer Kim Hill’s departure in 2000. From Elephunk came “Where is the Love?”, which became The Black Eyed Peas’ first major hit: it peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts in several other countries.

Their next album, Monkey Business, was released on June 7, 2005, and debuted at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart and was later certified triple platinum. “Pump It”, “Don’t Phunk with My Heart”, “Don’t Lie”, and “My Humps” were all recorded on this album and all cracked the Top 20 on U.S. charts.

2006-2008

Instagram Photo

Fergie’s debut solo album, The Dutchess, was a monster success and catapulted her into stardom as a solo artist. To date, it has sold over five million copies in the United States and over nine million copies worldwide. “London Bridge” was the first released single and topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. Four additional singles were released afterward: “Fergalicious”, “Glamorous”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, and “Clumsy.” All of which made the top 10 in the U.S. and were very successful abroad as well. “Glamorous” topped the charts in the U.S., and also reached the top-ten in over seven countries. The album’s fourth single, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, was the biggest hit. The ballad became a huge success worldwide, topping the charts of ten countries, including Australia, Canada, and the United States.

2009-2012

Instagram Photo

After rejoining The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie and the group released their fifth studio album, The E.N.D, in early 2009. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and had many hit singles like, “Boom Boom Pow”, “I Gotta Feeling”, “Meet Me Halfway”, “Imma Be”, and “Rock That Body”. Their sixth studio album, The Beginning, was released in 2010 to mixed reviews. The album had singles like “The Time (Dirty Bit)”, “Just Can’t Get Enough”, and “Don’t Stop The Party” which were met with some success, but nothing like they’re previous releases. During The Black Eyed Peas world tour in 2011, the group announced they would be taking an indefinite hiatus.

2013-Present

Instagram Photo

In 2013, Fergie announced she was working on her second solo album, Double Dutchess. Over the next four years, three singles were released in anticipation of the delayed album premiere: “L.A. Love (La La)”, “M.I.L.F. $”, and “Life Goes On”. The album was finally released on September 22, 2017. Double Dutchess failed to replicate the commercial success of its predecessor. Although it debuted within the top 20 of the Billboard 200, it fell off fast and in its third week, fell out of the Top 200. In total, the album has sold almost 30,000 copies in the US and 45,000 worldwide.

Women Are Arguing Amongst Themselves About Yoga Pants

0

The reason I used a meme for the lead article image you see above you instead of a stock image of a woman in yoga pants is simple: it’s a summary for the entire article.

On Saturday, the “failing” New York Times published an op-ed on Why Yoga Pants Are Bad For Women. Some of the highlights from the overly-woke writer:

“At this moment of cultural crisis, when the injustices and indignities of female life have suddenly become news, an important question hit me: Whatever happened to sweatpants?”

-“When yoga pants are the first thing grown women put on every morning, we can’t help absorbing the message that staying fit is our No. 1 purpose in life.”

-“Frankly, I’m annoyed by the whole booming industry around women’s exercise.”

-“Remember sweatpants? Women used to wear them, not so long ago. You probably still have a pair, in velour or terry cloth, with the name of a college or sports team emblazoned down the leg.”

As it turns out, most women didn’t agree with Honor Jones, the writer of the piece. Some highlights:

https://twitter.com/puma_legal/status/965276687372972032

https://twitter.com/thisisjendoll/status/965255991238459393

In the article, while discussing her day at the gym in sweatpants instead of yoga pants, Jones said that “Men didn’t look at me at all.” Well, no shit — if you were in yoga pants, men wouldn’t look at you either. Men aren’t supposed to look at women at the gym no matter what they’re wearing: yoga pants, sweatpants, jeans, gorilla suit — doesn’t matter, men shouldn’t be looking at women at the gym.

And that’s why we’re the meme above: while women write op-eds in national newspapers about the pants they wear and men’s influence on them, men didn’t even know we were involved in the conversation, as any decent one keeps him eyes to himself while at the gym. And trust me, it takes discipline: beautiful girls wearing tight clothes is definitely distracting, but as they say, mind over matter.

Group Of Students Stage “Lie-In” At The White House To Protest Nation’s Gun Laws

A group of students has gathered outside the White House on Presidents’ Day, staging a “lie-in,” where they lay down silently among protesters and reporters, to protest gun violence.

What happened?

WJLA named the group behind the student “lie-in” as Teens for Gun Reform; reportedly, they intended to lie down for three minutes to symbolize how long it supposedly took for Parkside shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz to buy his AR-15.

In addition, many participants were holding up signs, reading statements like “Military style weapons have no place on our streets,” “We Call B.S.” and “Am I next?” Some students also waved American flags.

The organization has also issued the following statement in connection to the event:

“We have organized this protest in solidarity with all of those who were affected by the horrific school shooting in Florida last Wednesday. We call on President Trump and leaders from both parties to finally act in the interest of America’s youth and end these tragic mass shootings!”

According to the New York Daily News, one unidentified teenager could be heard saying, “Why should we be allowed to live in fear, knowing that one day it could be any of us;” other chants included “No more dead kids!” and “Congress is complicit! Congress is Complicit!”

A 10-year-old boy identified as “Leo” was also quoted as saying the following:

“We’re protesting against people who are shooting at schools and killing innocent kids with guns that should be illegal.”

Some early reports of the protest had incorrectly referred to it as a “die-in,” possibly due to the act of lying down partially symbolizing corpses.

The lie-in should also not be confused with the upcoming “March For Our Lives” protest that was announced over the weekend by a group of teenage survivors of the Parkside shooting; that planned student protest is expected to take place on March 24.

Greenville County Sheriff’s Office

Elizabeth Heaton Taylor, a 27-year-old high school teacher, was allegedly found partially undressed with an unidentified student on Thursday, February 15. The two were reportedly found partially naked in a car in South Carolina.

Taylor, 27, is a science teacher and track coach at Greer High School in Greenville County, South Carolina. She faces charges of sexual battery of a minor between the ages of 16 and 17.

via WYFF:

Ryan Flood, a spokesman for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, said that on Thursday at about 6:30 p.m., deputies found an SUV parked suspiciously on Holland Road in Simpsonville.

He said Taylor and a student were found inside the SUV and Taylor was partially undressed. Flood said Taylor gave deputies a false name during the investigation.

He said investigators learned that between Jan. 1 and Thursday, Taylor engaged in sexual acts with the student on at least two separate occasions.

Taylor, who is in jail on a $10,250 bond, is no longer employed at the school. She graduated high school in 2009 before earning a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2012 and a master’s degree in secondary science education in 2015 from the University of South Carolina.

This is the latest in a string of teacher sex scandals over the last couple of years. In November, Tennessee teacher Janet Smothers was arrested. Former nutrition teacher LaToya Parker was also arrested for a relationship with a student. Florida teacher Caroline Lawson was charged with sexual assault. 26-year-old Allyson Moran was also arrested for similar crimes. The 23-year-old high school teacher Katherine Ross Ridenhour was also arrested for an inappropriate relationship.

Furthermore, Hunter Day, 22, was also arrested after a sting operation. Megan Kotarski was also arrested on similar charges. Michelle Schiffer, a 23-year-old history teacher in Texas, was also charged and arrested for allegedly having sex with a teenage student. 29-year-old Alyssia Marie Reddy was arrested in Maryland for her crimes in New Jersey. Samantha Fitzgerland, a 28-year-old, was most recently arrested and charged. Jordan Ondish was arrested for her inappropriate relationship with a 19-year-old, while 28-year-old Samantha Fitzpatrick was arrested on similar charges.

Nicole Marie Andrews was arrested as well. 32-year-old Jessica Langford was arrested and charged with sexual assault-related crimes as well. A teacher from Oregon, Andrea Baber, was accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.  Robin Dunlap, a teacher in Florida, was arrested for sending illicit photos to a 15-year-old boy in Texas. Teacher and tennis coach Jennifer Olajire-Aro was also charged. 42-year-old Heather Butts of California was arrested on a second-degree felony charge. Nancy Leigh Ann Brann, a former Christian school teacher, was arrested for having sex with a student. Coine Audiat pleaded no contest to having sex with a minor in 2016. 23-year-old Darci Lake was arrested for an inappropriate relationship.

Week 16, College Basketball Picks 2018: Spread & Predictions

With the regular season coming down to what appears to be a crazy finish in the closing weeks, programs across the nation will battle mercilessly in an attempt to secure themselves a place in the NCAA Tournament. Considering the amount of parity that has abounded throughout college basketball this season, it seems plausible to postulate that there is still a multitude of exciting and shocking upsets yet to come. Although some conferences are predisposed to fostering exciting matchups every week (ACC, Big 12, Big 10), even the lesser conferences have been home to some thrilling contests that have continued to leave fans and pundits in awe at just how this type of chaos is possible. While everyone may be gearing up for tournament play, this is the time of the regular season where a sense of desperation kicks in and every team that has ambitions of making it to the postseason start to assert themselves that much harder in the hopes of being noticed.

West Virginia Mountaineers (21) vs. Baylor Bears

In the Big 12, no one is safe. Recently, the Mountaineers have learned this the hard way as they were unable to protect a double-digit halftime lead in a devastating loss to Kansas. However, if we have learned anything from watching college basketball this year it is that programs that are seemingly on the brink of disaster can usually bounce back in a meaningful way. Against Baylor, West Virginia is in an ideal situation as they are facing off against a team that lacks serious competitive continuity on either offense or defense. With that being said, the Baylor Bears have quietly won four games in a row with two of those wins coming against opponents ranked in the top-10. Yet, even for how inconsistent the Mountaineers have been the last few weeks, they have the talent and capable defense that should be able to bounce back on the road against a Bears program that may a bit overconfident going into this contest.

Final Score: Mountaineers 77 Bears 74 Spread:

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Arkansas Razorbacks

Although the lack of a denoted ranking by the names of either of these programs may initially indicate that this contest is doomed to be a subpar affair from an entertainment perspective, both of these gritty SEC programs will actually be playing for a lot in this contest. For the Wildcats, they desperately need to establish some type of continuity on either offense or defense as the absence of an identity has hurt them tremendously this season.  To a degree, the lack of recognition the Razorbacks have received this season is somewhat understandable given the amount of parity that has permeated throughout college basketball. However, the Razorbacks have quietly been one of the most deadly shooting programs in the country as they are shooting 48.4% from the field and are capable of knocking down three-point shots quickly and often. While the Wildcats have the better athletes, the Razorbacks have an established albeit one-dimensional identity that has worked for them, especially against programs that have struggled to keep up with them when it comes to perimeter shooting (Wildcats 3P%: 33%).

Final Score: Wildcats 68 Razorbacks 78 Spread:

Louisville Cardinals vs. Duke Blue Devils (5)

As far as the middle of pack teams are concerned (of which there are many), the Louisville Cardinals have been one of the most competitive non-ranked programs in college basketball this season. Although the Cardinals have the swift athletes that can get to the basket and rebound consistently (37.6 RPG), they lack the perimeter shooters needed to keep up with the offensively gifted teams, especially down the stretch of tight games (36.4 3P%). Normally, the Blue Devils would be a bit worried about having to face a team that has length and can physically impose their will when getting to the basket. However, Duke has looked noticeably better defensively as they were able to stimy the shooting barrage of the tenacious Virginia Tech Hokies last week (Hokies FG%: 51.1%). Assuming the Blue Devils get Marvin Bagley III back, the Cardinals will struggle mightily to get inside the paint, which is essential to them being successful against teams that are more talented than them.

Final Score: Cardinals 69 Blue Devils 80 Spread:

North Carolina Tar Heels (10) vs. Syracuse Orange

Offensively speaking, the Tar Heels have been incredibly potent, especially during their five-game winning streak. Although North Carolina lacks the necessary size to play physical defense, they have plenty of tenacious athletes that are capable rebounding consistently especially as it pertains to the offensive glass (43.3 RPG). However, when the Tar Heels have struggled to score, it has been against programs that are opportunistic on defense while having decent enough shooters to score on them inside the arch. Defensively, the Orange are adept at using their hands to garner steals consistently (eight SPG) while their top three shooters are all reliable when it comes to making free throw shots. While the Orange’s over-reliance on their defense could pose a problem if the Tar Heels get out to an early lead, Syracuse is also an effective rebounding team (38 RPG), which will be vital in them preventing North Carolina from garnering extra opportunities on offense.

Final Score: Tar Heels 73 Orange 75 Spread:

Michigan Wolverines (17) vs. Penn State Nittany Lions

Currently three games back in the Big 10 Conference standings, it may appear that the Wolverines are out of contention for a conference title. However, the feisty and competitively persistent Wolverines have been undeterred by this notion as they have won their last three games fairly comfortably. Although their relentless defense has been the catalyst for the majority of their success (63.5 PAPG), they have also fared well when taking high percentage shots from the field (47.2 FG%). While the Nittany Lions have struggled to put together impressive wins consistently, they have actually been highly competitive in most of the games they have played this season, which is impressive considering their woeful past as it relates to their basketball program. Even though the Nittany Lions have the capable shooters to make shots from mid-range, they will have a difficult time establishing any type of effective offense against a Wolverines defense that is currently hitting its stride.

Final Score: Wolverines 70 Nittany Lions 64 Spread:

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Auburn Tigers (12)

At times this season, the Crimson Tide have looked completely and utterly dreadful from a competitive standpoint. However, every now and again, Alabama finds a way to dig deep and execute on a high level that they were unable to attain in their previous contest. To their credit, the Crimson Tide do have some capable shooters as four of their five starters are currently averaging double-digit points per game with those same four shooters hitting no less than 40% of their shots from the field. Although the Tigers offense is far more capable and potent than that of their hated rival, it has been their reluctance to pass the ball that has cost them games against inferior opponents. As is the case with any high-powered scoring program, playing unselfishly is vital to a team overcoming a scoring slump, which is something that occurs at some point or another to all college basketball teams. For this reason, I believe the Crimson Tide will eek out a win over a Tigers program that may be a bit too reliant on simply putting up the basketball and hoping their shooters get hot from long range.

Final Score: Crimson Tide 75 Tigers 70 Spread:

Syracuse Orange vs. Duke Blue Devils (5)

From a statistical perspective, these two programs could not be more different. Although the Orange are particularly anemic offensively (68.7 PPG), a detriment that is further worsened by their inability to pass the basketball (11.3 APG), they somewhat make up for it with a fundamentally sound defense that is especially vigilant when it comes to locating and covering the open man (63.4 PAPG). While the Blue Devils have struggled to be competitive defensively this season (71.3 PAPG), they have actually performed far better in their last two games, with their victory over a prolific offensive team in Virginia Tech being particularly impressive. In the end, the Orange have what it takes to prevent the Blue Devils from getting easy looks, they just lack the requisite offense needed to overcome and keep up with a much more talented team.

Final Score: Orange 63 Blue Devils 72 Spread:

Villanova Wildcats (3) vs. Creighton Blue Jays

Although their defense has struggled mightily to hold an opponent to less than 70 points in a game, it has been the electric and incredibly accurate shooters of the Wildcats that has allowed them to be highly successful this season. Shooting 51% from the field, the Wildcats make more of their shots than they miss which makes it incredibly difficult for their respective opponents to overcome an early deficit unless they can trade shots with the fearless shooters of Villanova. However, if there is any program that is not intimidated by the shooting capabilities of the Wildcats it’s the Blue Jays. Shooting just over 50% from the field, the Blue Jays are one of the few teams that can beat Villanova at their own game, a strategy that is almost always futile. If the Blue Jays had a slightly better defense, they would actually have a decent chance of pulling off the upset in this contest. Yet, without any way to stop the Wildcats, the Blue Jays will ultimately fail to keep pace with an offense that is slightly better than they are.

Final Score: Wildcats 85 Blue Jays 81 Spread:

Kansas Jayhawks (8) vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (6)

Arguably the most important game to be played in the Big 12 this season (which is saying a lot), the Jayhawks will attempt to once again reign supreme in a conference that has been theirs to lose for nearly 15 years. A fantastic shooting program that is cerebral and unselfish when finding the open man (17 APG), the Jayhawks are fearless when it comes to pursuing the basket in transition and are especially deadly when finding open shots in the half-court. Although the Red Raiders may lack the potent scorers and quick-minded players to orchestrate a dynamic offense, they actually possess the kryptonite to the Jayhawks potent offense: a relentlessly opportunistic defense. Allowing just 62.5 points per game while garnering eight steals per game, the Red Raiders will rarely allow the Jayhawks to feel comfortable when finding an open shot and will constantly find ways to trap and attack their better shooters. This game will be incredibly close with both teams having some success executing their respective game plans. In the end, though, the Red Raiders have the ideal defense needed to prevent the Jayhawks from finding their rhythm on offense.

Final Score: Jayhawks 72 Red Raiders 73 Spread:

Auburn Tigers (10) vs. Florida Gators

Similar to the Big 12, the SEC has a plethora of competent programs that are more than capable of taking down the fiercest competition within their conference. Currently, at the top of the conference with a two-game lead, the Tigers have rarely been exposed despite having a below average defense (72.6 PAPG). Up to this point in the season, the Tigers have been fortunate to have several talented shooters that can hit shots from the field while being aggressive enough to garner rebounds off of the glass. Sadly, the Florida Gators have not fared nearly as well this season as their now anemic offense combined with their lackluster defense has relegated them to being a middle-of-the-pack conference competitor. While an upset is possible, the Gators simply lack any type of notable strengths needed to dispatch what has largely been a highly prolific shooting team in Auburn.

Final Score: Tigers 85 Gators 73 Spread:

Top 25 College Basketball Rankings 2018: Week 16 AP Poll

Despite six of the top-10 teams losing last week, four of those teams actually remained in the top-10 this week. Understandably, it’s an incredibly difficult task to attempt to weight the losses of top programs objectively considering how many reputable teams have lost this season. As far as this week is concerned, the rankings were relatively safe as several ranked teams that lost once were not severely punished for being upset, which is fair as the competitive difference between being 1st or 25th in the rankings is relatively small. If this week’s rankings are an indicator of anything it is that parity is a difficult thing to gauge and predict as every team is uniquely fallible both from an overall and in-game perspective.

Top 25 College Basketball Rankings 2018: Week 16

Losing twice last week, the Oklahoma Sooners were finally and justifiably dropped from the rankings for the first time this season. Although Trae Young’s fall from grace is certainly one of the reasons for Oklahoma playing poorly, it has been the lack of playmakers on the roster that have truly held this team back. As great and supremely talented as Trae Young is, not even he can overcome a half-court trap, nor should he be expected to make Stephen Curry type shots on a regular basis. As this is a team sport, even the best and most prolific athletes need some assistance from time to time if for no other reason than predictability almost always condemns a team to fail sooner or later.

Moving up seven spots from 12th to 5th, the Duke Blue Devils are finally starting to look like the well-rounded championship contenders that everyone expected them to be going into the season. If the Blue Devils can continue to be as stingy on defense as they have been in their last two victories, they could find themselves playing their best basketball at exactly the right time. Can the persistent youngsters of Duke establish a versatile and competitive presence to allow them to win it all come April?

Columbia University Student Found Dead In Dorm Room From Suspected Overdose

Gage Billetto, a 19-year-old Ivy League student at Columbia University, has died from an opioid overdose. Billetto, 19, was found dead of a suspected overdose in his New York City dorm room on Wednesday, December 27. Billetto would have turned 20-years-old on December 25, 20187.

According to reports, Billetto reportedly had a history of substance abuse, including marijuana, cocaine, and prescription medicine. Billetto reportedly obtained ADHD medication and anti-anxiety pills by lying to a psychiatrist. Police said that Billetto died alone on December 22 but was not found until five days later on December 27.

The New York Post reports that Gage lied to his psychiatrist in order to obtain a prescription of Klonopin, an anti-anxiety pill, and Vyvanse, a stimulant, and Ritalin, a methylphenidate.

via New York Post:

From age 14, Gage wanted to follow in his parents’ footsteps. “He had this list of the best colleges in the US and his goal was to get as high on the list as possible,” said Kyle, 57. “When he really set his mind to something, he’d stop at nothing to achieve it.”

Gage also liked to push boundaries. By his junior year of high school, he was regularly experimenting with drugs and alcohol. He threw big parties when his parents left town, left school during lunch to smoke weed in his basement with pals and got into fights, said his friend Will Rabsey.

“Cocaine was really big for him,” said Rabsey, 19, who went to all 12 years of elementary, middle and high school with Gage. “I remember a few times he’d put a line out and I’d say, ‘Damn, Gage, that’s a lot.’ He’d say, ‘No, no I’ve done this before. I can handle it.’ ”

On October 12, a little over two months before his death, Gage collapsed in the dorm’s common room and was brought to St. Luke’s Hospital. While doctors told his parents that Gage had taken a “dangerous mixture of drugs”, he would not sign release papers allowing his parents to see what drugs were in his system.

In addition to the drugs he obtained through his psychiatrist, police are investigating where Gage got opioids such as painkillers and heroin.

Marjory Stoneman Student Who Shielded His Classmates From Bullets Expected To Recover

One of the survivors of the Parkside shooting, Anthony Borges, managed to save his classmates by using his body as a human shield, as confirmed by other surviving students.

What happened?

One of Borges’ classmates and friends, Carlos Rodriguez, told ABC News that he only survived because of Borges’ actions, giving the following statement:

“None of us knew what to do. So, he took the initiative to just save his other classmates.”

According to the account, Borges and his classmates rushed to hide in a classroom as the shooting occurred, as the gunman, later identified as Nikolas Cruz, fired randomly and rapidly at students. Borges was the last of a group of 20 students who fled into a room and tried to look the door when he was shot. Holding his ground in the doorway, he allowed himself to be shot so help his classmates. The group of 20 students all survived the incident uninjured, thanks in part to Borges’ actions.

Who is Anthony Borges?

Borges is a soccer player at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and was believed to be 15-years-old at the time of the shooting.

During the Parkside shooting, allowing himself to serve as a human shield to protect his classmates, he was shot four time, in the back and in both legs, although he survived the incident.

Anthony later called his father, Royer, shortly after the attack, describing the shooting. For his part, Royer gave the following message to ABC News:

“He just called me and says, ‘Dad, somebody shot me in the back and my leg, too.”

“He’s my hero.”

“I only ask that people pray for him.”

What can you do to help?

According to the Miami Herald, a GoFundMe page has been developed to help the Borges family, with the following mission statement:

“Anthony is a victim of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.  During this unspeakable tragedy, Anthony was able to save about 20 other students as he attempted to close and lock the door to a classroom.  He was shot multiple times (both legs were shot, left upper thigh bone shattered and one bullet went through his back).  He has a long road of recovery ahead of him but he is alive and stable.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Anthony and his family.  Any help is very much appreciated.”
