Soccer is exploding in America, and even though the United States Men’s National Soccer Team won’t be participating in the 2018 World Cup, interested in still expected to be huge amongst Americans, many of which will be tuning into the World Cup for the first time.

According to a 2018 Gallup poll about United States spectator sports, soccer has increased in popularity over the last four years. In the poll,  7% of U.S. adults said that soccer was their favorite sport, up 3% from the last time the poll was taken. At 7%, soccer just barely trailed baseball (9%), but was above hockey (4%).  Most notably, though, is that of all the sports in the poll, soccer is the only one that grew, as football dropped by 2%, basketball dropped 1%, and baseball dropped 5%, meaning it’s the only sport in the country to be actively growing in popularity.

While the USMNT not qualifying for the world cup was certainly a blow to the popularity of soccer in America, club soccer, particularly the Premier League and the Champions League, are as popular as ever in the United States.

And if you’re one of those fans with a new found interest, I’m sure you’re looking for a new podcast to listen to about your new favorite sport. Here are the Top 5 Best Soccer Podcasts for Americans:

The Office of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement at Iowa State University has updated their procedures for registration and requirements for sorority and fraternity events involving alcohol. Reports say that the new rules will apply to all sorority and fraternity events both on and off-campus and will be effective immediately.

According to Iowa State Daily, the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement worked together with the Office of Student Conduct and University Legal Services to create the procedures and expectations over the last nine months.

An email from Billy Boulden, the Director of the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement, said that their hope is “these revised procedures will create a safer environment for chapters, members, and guests.” The new procedures will cover, definition of an even involving alcohol, requirements for conducting events involving alcohol, mandatory event registration procedures, violations of these procedures, and contacts/resources.

via Iowa State Daily:

According to the procedures, there are 19 requirements for conducting events involving alcohol and 17 procedures for registering events listed in the document, the first being that alcohol should not be the focus of any sorority or fraternity event, and events must have another source of entertainment.

Chapters are also not permitted to use organization, chapter or club funds to purchase alcoholic beverages. This requirement also applies to slush funds (e.g., passing the hat, money pools, one person buying alcohol for others.)

The procedures also state that sororities and fraternities are now prohibited from hosting “open parties,” meaning that students without a specific invitation from a sorority or fraternity member are not permitted to attend an event where alcohol is present. When registering an event, a preliminary guest list including full names and birth dates of expected guests is required.

Worst of all, drinking games such beer pong or any other activity involving “the consumption of alcohol which involves duress or encouragement related to the consumption of alcohol” are now prohibited. Furthermore, if a chapter fails to register an event, that chapter will be prohibited from hosting future events

Hiawatha Police Department

Gabrielle Bauman, a former teacher who admitted to having a six-month sexual relationship with a student, was only sentenced to probation.

Bauman, 25, a former science teacher at Hiawatha High School in Illinois, was arrested in August after being accused of having sexual relations with one of her students. The alleged relationship happened between November 2016 and May 2017. The Hiawatha Police Department said that the investigation began after a tip was given to school officials in June.

According to reports, because Bauman had no prior convictions, the judge gave her probation in lieu of a jail sentence. Furthermore, Bauman will be required to undergo various therapy treatments and will have to register as a sex offender for 25 years.

The criminal stated that the alleged victim was a ‘person 16 years or older who was a student enrolled at Hiawatha High School where the offender was employed’.

Bauman had been teaching at Hiawatha High School for just a year at the time of her resignation.

This is the latest in a string of teacher/student sex scandals over the last couple of years. In November, Tennessee teacher Janet Smothers was arrested. Former nutrition teacher LaToya Parker was also arrested for a relationship with a student. Florida teacher Caroline Lawson was charged with sexual assault. 26-year-old Allyson Moran was also arrested for similar crimes. The 23-year-old high school teacher Katherine Ross Ridenhour was also arrested for an inappropriate relationship.

Furthermore, Hunter Day, 22, was also arrested after a sting operation. Megan Kotarski was also arrested on similar charges. Michelle Schiffer, a 23-year-old history teacher in Texas, was also charged and arrested for allegedly having sex with a teenage student. 29-year-old Alyssia Marie Reddy was arrested in Maryland for her crimes in New Jersey. Samantha Fitzgerland, a 28-year-old, was most recently arrested and charged. Jordan Ondish was arrested for her inappropriate relationship with a 19-year-old, while 28-year-old Samantha Fitzpatrick was arrested on similar charges.

Nicole Marie Andrews was arrested as well. 32-year-old Jessica Langford was arrested and charged with sexual assault-related crimes as well. A teacher from Oregon, Andrea Baber, was accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.  Robin Dunlap, a teacher in Florida, was arrested for sending illicit photos to a 15-year-old boy in Texas. Teacher and tennis coach Jennifer Olajire-Aro was also charged. 42-year-old Heather Butts of California was arrested on a second-degree felony charge. Nancy Leigh Ann Brann, a former Christian school teacher, was arrested for having sex with a student. Coine Audiat pleaded no contest to having sex with a minor in 2016. 23-year-old Darci Lake was arrested for an inappropriate relationship.

Valeria Costadoni was also arrested due to a relationship with her student. 40-year-old Kisha Nuckols was arrested for having sex with a student, too. Hilary Dattilo, a 30-year-old Ohio high school teacher, has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a female student. 30-year-old Missouri teacher Elizabeth Morgan was also arrested on similar charges. Trisha Anderson Rogers, a 47-year-old former student teacher at a North Carolina middle school was sentenced to eight months in prison after pleading guilty to soliciting a young student for sex. 39-year-old Texas teacher Marisela Winn was also charged for her relationship with a student.

Yales Fraternities Delay Rush While Deciding Whether To Let Women Participate

Fraternities at Yale University have decided to delay rush as student activists push for the social organizations to be open to both men and women.

Burgwell Howard, the Associate Vice President of Student Life at the school, advised Yale’s fraternities to allow all students to attend rush events regardless of their gender,

On Monday, January 22, Matthews Kirk, a spokesman North-American Interfraternity Conference Chapter, said that the university has put off rush events after students ineligible for membership indicated they planned to attend.

via WTHN:

Yale senior associate dean Howard Burgwell urged fraternity leaders in a letter Thursday to keep rush events open to all students, regardless of gender, while being clear about their organizations’ membership criteria. He wrote that the New Haven, Connecticut, university has no interest in dictating to student organizations who they select.

A student group called Engender has been working on the Ivy League campus to end what it describes as sex discrimination by all-male fraternities.

The Yale Daily News reports that six of the eight fraternities contacted by Engender — Alpha Epsilon Pi, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Leo, Sigma Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Zeta Psi — did not respond to request for comment.

Yale’s Greek Life was a source of controversy back in 2011 when fraternity pledges chanted “No means yes, yes means anal.”

A high school shooting has been reported at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky.

Several people have been reported wounded and are being treated at a nearby hospital. Details about their condition were not immediately available.

One person is currently in police custody, as confirmed by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. The suspect is said to be a 16-year-old male who was “apprehended within minutes,” according to a police statement; a motive for the shooting is currently unknown at this time.

Police scanners indicated that shooting could have occurred around 8 AM. A student wrote on Twitter around 8:18 AM:

“Pray for Marshall County High School, I am a student there and we just had a school shooter, multiple students injured, please pray for us.”

Update: Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin has posted the following on social media:

“Tragic shooting at Marshall County HS…Shooter is in custody, one confirmed fatality, multiple others wounded…Much yet unknown…Please do not speculate or spread hearsay…Let’s let the first responders do their job and be grateful that they are there to do it for us…”

Bevin later released an official statement on the shooting:

Confirming one death and the number of casualties, believed to be students, to be five, the Kentucky State Police wrote on social media that among “multiple victims, one of which has been pronounced dead,” also announcing that “more details will available soon.”

Earlier reports listed the number of victims as four. The school is currently believed to be on lockdown. Emergency responders are also believed to be on scene. A local news agency, “Marshall County Daily,” also reported that “multiple agencies currently on the scene.”

The publication later wrote that “parents are being asked to stay back by board office,” with students being taken to a “secure” location where they could be picked up.

In a live audio statement, police confirmed that “as of right now, all patients have been transported that we’re aware of.” It is believed that at least one victim was shot in the torso and another had a graze wound. According to police, there may have been up to 10 victims in the shooting as students were being taken to the hospital.

The scene was not entirely secured at around 10 AM central time. According to reports, a helicopter landed at the school, presumably to help transport victims. Various accounts gave painted situations for the students. Police said that one parent reported that her daughter was hiding in a clost until police came to get her. Another student developed a panic attack; another student had a broken ankle.

One former student gave the following statement on Facebook:

“This is my high school. I feel devastated. MCHS is a beautiful, rural community that puts all of its focus and love onto the county high school and no matter how far from home I wander, I will always and forever be a Marshall County Marshal. My heart goes out to my western Kentucky family. We stand with you.”

One eye witness, 17-year-old junior Greg Rodgers, gave the following account, according to Syracuse:

“I pulled off to the side of the road because everyone was running to the main road. I asked my friend what was going on and he told me that there was a school shooting. I was shocked. He said that someone had just shot up the school… I was shaking a lot driving back to my house. I’m still shaking.”

This is the second shooting at a high school in the United States within the last 24 hours, with a previous school shooting happening in Italy, Texas.

Update: According to KWTX, at least two people have died as a consequence of the shooting. PoliceOne added that at least 19 people had been injured, with only 14 confirmed to be victims of gunshot wounds. 5 others had been hurt but were not shot. It is believed that all of those shot had been students.

As more information was given about the suspect, his age was said to be 15 and it was confirmed that he will be charged with murder. Some previous accounts of the shooting may have confused the story with the shooting in Italy, as conflicting reports identified his age as either 15 or 16.

According to Vox, Police have said the scene is now “no longer active.”

As this story is developing, more information will be updated as made available.

Maisie Williams Is Going To Be A Bridesmaid At Sophie Turner’s Wedding

If Maisie Williams being a bridesmaid at Sophie Turner’s wedding isn’t the definition of #FriendshipGoals, then I don’t know what is.

While speaking to Radio Times, Williams, who plays Ayra Stark on the hit HBO fantasy drama series Game Of Thrones, revealed that she is going to be a bridesmaid in Turner’s wedding, who is getting married to DNCE singer and Jonas Brother Joe Jonas. Turner, of course, plays Arya’s older sister Sansa on Game Of Thrones.

When asked if she has gotten official word from Sophie yet about participating in the ceremonies, Williams said: “Oh, already got it. Yeah, it’s very, very exciting. It’s kind of bizarre though.”

However, Williams says that Turner and Jonas have yet to begin planning the wedding as she wants to wrap up production on the final season of Game Of Thrones first.

“We’re waiting ’til this season’s done until we get into it. But I think she’s already letting her little heart wander and imagine,” Maisie said.

2018 is shaping up to be a big year for Turner as she films the final season of Game Of Thrones, appears as the main character in the new X-Men movie Dark Phoenix, and gets married to Joe Jonas.

I only have one question, though: where’s my invite, Sophie? I’m sure Maisie needs a date, I’d be happy to oblige.

Who’s Preforming At The Grammys 2018?

The Grammys are one of the best night s of the entire year. You have the most talented artists, musicians, and singer/songwriters in the entire world in one room to see which of them was the best this year. This will be 68th Grammy Awards, and everything has me to believe this will be the best one yet. With the list of performers and James Corden will be the host again this year. So expect some Carpool Karaoke jokes or references throughout the show. This year’s award nominees are led by Jay Z and Kendrick Lamar receiving eight and seven nominations respectively. Jay Z made waves with his album 4:44 and Kendrick did the same with his album Damn. Not only will Kendrick hopefully be taking home some hardware tonight but he is just one of the many performers set to bless the stage in front of their peers tonight.

Time: 7:30 P.M. EST
Date: Sunday, January 28th 2018
TV Channel: CBS
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
Host: James Corden

The full list of performers is:

  1. Lady Gaga
  2. Kendrick Lamar
  3. Rihanna
  4. Childish Gambino
  5. Little Big Town
  6. Pink
  7. Sam Smith
  8. Patti LuPone

  11. Bruno Mars and Cardi B
  12. Kesha
  13. SZA
  14. Elton John and Miley Cyrus
  15. U2

This is one of the best lineups I have ever seen for a Grammys. I mean whenever you can have Miley Cyrus singing with Elton John and Cardi B with Bruno Mars you know it’s going to be a good night. One of the more somber moments tonight will be when Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid go out to perform their Grammy-nominated song “1-800-273-8255” along with a group of suicide attempt and loss survivors selected by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The person I am most excited to see perform is my girl, Rih Rih. She always has the best performances. Last year she showed up to the Grammys with a bejeweled flask and was turning up and having a blast. I can wait to see how she tops it this year.

An unidentified Utah State University student was hospitalized after she consumed a Tide Pode.

While there is no word on the student’s current condition, she was reportedly conscious after medics put her in an ambulance.

The call came in late Saturday afternoon about an incident at an on-campus housing building.

via KWCH:

Utah State University student was hospitalized on Saturday after eating a Tide Pod. The call came in late Saturday afternoon about an incident at an on-campus housing building.

USU police initially called the incident a “tide pod overdose.” The student in question ingested a single tide pod. The student was taken to a nearby hospital but their condition is unknown. Earlier this month, doctors warned people not to eat the laundry pods due to health concerns.

The warning was sparked by social media posts and online videos of people participating in a challenge that involves eating the pods and filming the reaction.

According to various reports, nearly 40 teenagers have been sent to poison control centers since the first ‘Tide Pod Challenge’ video went viral on January 7.

“The ‘laundry packet challenge’ is neither funny nor without serious health implications. The intentional misuse of these products poses a real threat to the health of individuals. We have seen a large spike in single-load laundry packet exposures among teenagers since these videos have been uploaded,” said Stephen Kaminski, CEO of the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

Kobe Bryant’s Short Film “Dear Basketball” Nominated For An Oscar

Kobe Bryant is one of the best basketball players ever to lace them up, he led the Lakers to five NBA Championships, was an 18-time all-star, and is one of the most influential players of the last 20+ years. Kobe’s impact has stretched far past the hardwood and onto the silver screen. Kobs’s career highlights could be a movie on their own, a starry about how a guy had to grind to earn playing time and that monkey never left his back as he continued to improve and rise through the ranks of the NBA’s elite until every kid shooting a piece of paper into a garbage can couldn’t do it without yelling KOBE!

When Kobe played his last game not only did he lead the Lakers to victory with clutch shots down the stretch but he dropped 60 points. After the game, Kobe was not only exhausted, but he was very emotional knowing he had just played his last game. When a reporter asked him what he wanted to do after basketball, he didn’t hesitate in saying that he wanted to pursue professional storytelling. When I first heard that I was confused for multiple reasons, One I didn’t know that that was a profession, two that it’s quite the interesting post-career route, and last but not least I was really hoping he would be a personal trainer for future NBA stars. Regardless if I understood it or not you got to respect Kobe following his passions and of course he’s elite at his new passion as well.

Kobe Bryant produced “Dear Basketball” an Oscar nomination for his animated short film with animator Glen Keane, who’s worked on some animated movies you may have heard of like “Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” The six-minute short film is based on a letter Bryant wrote in The Players’ Tribune back in 2015, where he announced his retirement from basketball. Just look at the trailer of what the dynamic duo of Glen Keane and Kobe Bryant was able to create

Oscars 2018: Must-See Predictions For This Year’s Academy Awards

The nominations for the 90th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning. 2017 was undoubtedly a great year for film, making this year’s categories extremely competitive. Following the 2018 Golden Globes, the “Best Picture” nominations for this year’s Academy Awards should not come as a surprise, but that does not mean it will be easy to predict who will go home with the award. Almost every film nominated for the category can be justified as the deserving picture whether the deciding factor is the story, cinematography, relevance to 2017, or just plain good filmmaking.

Oscar 2018 Viewing Details

Date: Sunday, March 4
TV Channel: ABC
Location: Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, California
Host: Jimmy Kimmel

See below for a list of the nominees for the most debated categories below along with some predictions as to who might win the Oscar.

Best Picture

Call Me By Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Get Out
Lady Bird
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

This will easily be the hardest category to predict as every film here is doing something different and equally important. But The Shape Of Water, seen by many as the current frontrunner, is the one picture in the category that speaks to the politics of the past year both in terms of marginalized identities and politicised love, the technical accomplishments of gorgeous filmmaking and cinematography at the helm of a master director, and the simplicity of engaging storytelling. And the fact that it manages to accomplish all of this with a main character who does not speak makes it even more inspiring to watch.

Best Director

Christopher Nolan — Dunkirk
Jordan Peele — Get Out
Greta Gerwig — Lady Bird
Paul Thomas Anderson — Phantom Thread
Guillermo del Toro — The Shape of Water

Greta Gerwig has officially become the fifth woman nominated in the Best Director category, which is kind of a huge deal. This was Gerwig’s debut as a director as well, which adds to the accomplishment. And for those who are familiar with Gerwig as an actress, it is easy to see how much of herself and sense of humor translated onto actress Saoirse Ronan who plays the titular role. If Gerwig’s going to win, however, her main competition can be found in Guillermo del Toro and The Shape of Water, which is also currently the predicted frontrunner in the Best Picture category, and for good reason.

Best Actor

Timothée Chalamet — Call Me By Your Name
Daniel Day Lewis — Phantom Thread
Daniel Kaluuya — Get Out
Gary Oldman — Darkest Hour
Denzel Washington — Roman J. Israel, Esq.

It is likely that the Academy will follow the route of the Golden Globes and go with Gary Oldman in this category. Or perhaps the pressure of Phantom Thread being Daniel Day-Lewis’ “last movie” will influence some voters, but even if he doesn’t go home with the Oscar, not enough attention will have been paid for Timothee Chalamet’s nuanced and revelational role as Elio in Call Me By Your Name. It is a major accomplishment in itself that the actor, at only 22 years old and at the very start of his career, is even nominated alongside legends like Lewis and Denzel Washington. It may be a risky prediction to say Chalamet will take the prize, but so far he’s won in practically every award ceremony aside from the Globes, so it would not be a complete shock.

Best Actress

Sally Hawkins — The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand — Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Margot Robbie — I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan — Lady Bird
Meryl Streep — The Post

There’s no question Frances McDormand is given a powerhouse performance in Three Billboards, but will it be enough to beat out the 21-time-nominated Meryl Streep? Perhaps, but this is once again a category that is stacked with amazingly talented performers who delivered very rich and nuanced portrayals of female characters in an era of the#MeToo revolution. Can we give the award to all of them?

Best Supporting Actor

Willem Dafoe — The Florida Project
Woody Harrelson — Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Richard Jenkins — The Shape of Water
Christopher Plummer — All the Money in the World
Sam Rockwell — Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

In terms of predictions for this category, the fact that Three Billboards finds two actors nominated for the gold might indicate the race is between Willem Dafoe and Sam Rockwell, with Rockwell looking like the frontrunner after wins at the SAG awards and the Globes.

Best Supporting Actress

Mary J. Blige — Mudbound
Allison Janney — I, Tonya
Lesley Manville — Phantom Thread
Laurie Metcalf — Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer — The Shape of Water

The race for this one is really between Allison Janney and Laurie Metcalf, but if the Golden Globes are any indication (which they often are), the award will go to Janney.

Best Original Screenplay

The Big Sick — Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani
Get Out — Jordan Peele
Lady Bird — Greta Gerwig
The Shape of Water — Guillermo del Toro, Vanessa Taylor
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri — Martin McDonagh

If we are talking about screenwriting chops, which in this category we are, Lady Bird is a perfect movie. Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote Frances Ha and Mistress America with partner Noah Baumbach, has up to this point been written off as a “muse” by many, but Lady Bird proves just how witty, original, and important her voice is as a writer.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Call Me By Your Name — James Ivory
The Disaster Artist — Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber
Logan — Scott Frank, James Mangold, Michael Green
Molly’s Game — Aaron Sorkin
Mudbound — Virgil Williams, Dee Rees

Not much can compete with James Ivory’s masterful adaptation of Adre Aciman’s novel Call Me By Your Name. If you read the book, you know how challenging it would be to turn into a film, being that so much of the work is narrated in Elio’s head. But Ivory so wonderfully manages to communicate so much by saying so little in a film about a young man finding the words to articulate his love for another man.

Best Animated Feature

The Boss Baby — Tom McGrath, Ramsey Naito
The Breadwinner — Nora Twomey, Anthony Leo
Coco — Lee Unkrich, Darla K. Anderson
Ferdinand — Carlos Saldanha
Loving Vincent — Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman, Ivan Mactaggart

Looking at the nominees, there aren’t any that were as talked about as Pixar’s Coco, which was celebrated by critics and audiences alike and most likely to win in this category.

Best Song

“Mighty River” — Mudbound, Mary J. Blige, Raphael Saadiq, Taura Stinson

“Mystery of Love” — Call Me By Your Name, Sufjan Stevens

“Remember Me” — Coco, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez

“Stand Up for Something” — Marshall, Diane Warren, Lonnie R. Lynn

“This is Me” — The Greatest Showman, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul

If true love does exist then please, Academy, Sufjan Stevens must-win for his beautiful, melancholy “Mystery of Love.” The choice by director Luca Guadagnino to include the well-known singer as the musical voice of the film was a smart one as his lyrics speak to the emotional subtext of the film beautifully.

Xbox Game Pass: All Xbox Exclusive Titles To Hit Service On Launch Day

Microsoft

Microsoft has been steadily making waves in the Gaming world with the creation of the Xbox Game Pass, a “Netflix-style” game subscription service, back in June 2017. Allowing subscribers unlimited access to a select title of games, the Xbox Games Pass including past hits like Dead Rising 4Halo 5: Guardians, and underlooked classic Sunset Overdrive.

Today, January 23rd, 2018, Microsoft announced that all future titles coming from Microsoft Studios will be available to subscribers on release day! Used to be seen as the easiest way to pick up “older games” on your Xbox One console, the Xbox Game Pass is now becoming the Xbox’s golden ticket. With already 100+ amazing titles offered by the service, subscribers can now expect the newest and best Xbox exclusives to be delivered their Xbox One on day one.

Microsoft announced today the first three titles that would be making their way over to the service when they launch later on this year. Starting with Rare’s latest online pirate adventure game, Sea of Thieves, the game will be available to subscribers (at no additional cost) the moment it releases on March 20th, 2018! Following Sea of Thieves, Microsoft will be adding the highly anticipated Crackdown 3 and cooperative zombie survival game State of Decay 2 when they release later on in 2018. Unfortunately, neither of the titles have a set release date other than the placeholder 2018 date.

This news comes as a massive surprise to the entire gaming community as it basically means that subscribers do not have to buy another Xbox exclusive title when they release. Suggesting that when the next Forza Motorsport, Forza Horizon, Gears of War, and even Halo game gets announced, they will be hitting the service on their launch days. Please note though, this will only be happening for Microsoft Studios titles only, so don’t be expecting to get every game released on the Xbox on the Game Pass.

The Xbox Game Pass service is only available to Xbox One owners but according to the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, in an interview with PC Gamer he said, “I’ve said I want to bring Game Pass to the PC. The team doesn’t love it when I pre-announce things, but I definitely want to bring Game Pass to PC.”

Xbox Game Pass is available to subscribe now for $9.99 a month, and Microsoft recently announced they would be offering 6-Month Xbox Game Pass subscriptions in stores, like GameStop, for $60.

Top 5 Oscar Nominated Female Directors You Need To Know

0

No matter how well your day is going, odds are it can’t be better than the day Greta Gerwig is having right now. Following the announcement of the nominee’s for the 90th Annual Academy Awards, Gerwig has made history as the 5th female ever to be nominated in the Best Director category, and the first female director nominated for a directorial debut. Even though the nomination shouldn’t be seen as a surprise, given the overwhelming critical acclaim for her film Lady Bird (which currently has a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes), the accomplishment comes right after Gerwig was notably snubbed in the same category at the Golden Globes. In fact actress Natalie Portman, who presented the category at the Globes, deliberately pointed this out when she said, “and here are the all-male nominees.”

Gerwig was born and raised in Sacremento, California and attended the all-girls St. Francis High School, a very similar environment to the one that the titular character in Lady Bird inhabits during her coming of age story. Gerwig first dipped into playwrighting as an undergraduate at Barnard College in New York, where she starred in the Annual Varsity Show alongside SNL actress Kate McKinnon. After graduating from college, Gerwig found her stride as an actress starring in a variety of mumblecore films and eventually being introduced to her now-partner Noah Baumbach, her co-writer & director for Frances Ha. It is specifically her massive impact as an actress in an indie film that led people to underestimate her as an auteur, when in fact Gerwig is a co-writer on both Frances Ha and Mistress America. But as the brevity of this list of female directors suggests, to succeed as a female director in Hollywood is no easy feat.

See below for the full list of female directors who have been nominated for an Academy Award.
