Out of the all the perpetually trending YouTube personalities such as Liza Koshy, David Dobrik, and PewDiePie, the 36-year-old high school dropout turned YouTuber known as Casey Neistat has become extremely influential to the platform through gradual successes.

Currently, Neistat has an immense following of 7 million subscribers on his own YouTube channel where most of his content ranges from 7-12 minute vlogs and short films that continuously receive millions of views. Neistat’s social media following is also massive with 2.7 million followers on Instagram, 1.4 million followers on Twitter, and over 8,000 followers on Facebook. Each of Neistat’s videos is unique and stylistic and they are almost shot like a director shooting a film. He utilizes various camera angles, music choices, random sets of people as his actors, a certain daily objective for his plot, and his remote controlled self-moving skateboard that he rides comfortably around dense city traffic. In past years, Neistat has been awarded for his content. In 2010, he won the John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Awards. In 2016, he won YouTuber of the Year at the Shorty Awards, New Media Star at GQ Men of the Year, and both Best First-Person Series and Best Editing at the Streamy Awards. With all of his successes from YouTube how much is Neistat’s actual net worth?

Casey Neistat’s Net Worth as of 2017: $12 Million

This amount is actually uncommon when it comes to newly recognized YouTubers, the majority of popular YouTubers such as Lilly Singh and Hank Green normally have net worths ranging from $2-$5 million dollars. YouTubers such as PewDiePie or Smosh who have been with the platform have net worths that range from $11-$18 million dollars. Also, on November 28, 2016,  Neistat sold his social media app Beme to CNN for a deal valued at $25 million dollars. This acquisition was made by CNN as a goal to increase their range to more millennial viewers. Beme is soon set to launch an app that focuses on daily news that will be around 10 minutes long and initially run four days a week.

1996-2008

Before Neistat’s colossal YouTube fame, Neistat faced a rough time trying to find his direction in life.  He dropped out of high school at age 15 and had a son with his former girlfriend, Robin Harris. Between the ages of 17-20, Neistat resided in a trailer park with Harris and their infant son, Owen. To provide for his new family he had to become a dishwasher in Connecticut and then moved to New York City where he became a bike messenger. Neistat began his filmmaking career through series of short films such as Work with Tom Sachs in 2001, iPod’s Dirty Secret in 2003, and Science Experiments in 2004. Neistat’s film career became highly noticeable after HBO purchased an eight-episode television series that was made by Neistat and his brother Van called The Neistat Brothers. The film served as an autobiography into the brother’s lives and received mixed critical acclaim from The Hollywood Reporter, The Washington Post, and Variety.

2010-2018

Neistat gathered more success when he started to create short films on YouTube in 2010. He uploaded short videos such as videos criticizing the MTA as to instructing when to use New York City Subway emergency break cords and another criticizing the NYPD for ticketing cyclists if they ride outside their bike lanes. In the time period spanned from 2010-2017, Neistat’s 7 million followers have been gained from the spontaneous, creative, and constantly unique content of his daily vlogs and short films.

It will be interesting where Neistat’s career will lead him next especially with his news show for CNN intended to be dropping soon. Maybe Neistat’s fame will extend to more than just YouTube but only time will tell. Neistat continues to live in New York City with his wife Candace Pool with Casey’s son Owen and daughter Francine.

NFL Payoff Scenarios 2018: The Hunt for Super Bowl 52

The NFL is in its final week of the season and we still have so many things to figure out. Like who will be the most valuable player, or who’s going to be rookie of the year, but most importantly which teams will make the playoffs.

Last season we were treated to the greatest Super Bowl comeback in NFL history as Tom Brady was able to lead the New England Patriots back from a 28-3 deficit to win it all. This season nine of the 12 teams have already secured a playoff spot, leaving three slots remaining. One in the NFC and two available spots in the AFC, so lets take a look at the teams fighting for a playoff berth.

Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Date: Sunday 12/31/17
Game Time:
 4:25 PM
TV Channel: CBS
Location: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens who have a 9-6 record are currently the fifth seed in the AFC and they come into week 17 controlling there own destiny. With a win at home against the Bengals, the Ravens would lock up the fifth seed in the playoffs. If they lose they can still have the sixth seed in the playoffs, if the Tennessee Titans win and the Buffalo Bills lose.

Tennessee Titans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Date: Sunday 12/31/17
Game Time:
 4:25 PM
TV Channel: CBS
Location: Nissan Stadium, Nashville

The Titans (8-7) started off the season strong with third year quarterback Marcus Mariota. They were in a tight back and forth battle with the Jaguars for the AFC South title, but the Titans could not keep up losing their last three games. Now they come into this final week with the chance to win their way into the playoffs. If the Titans win their match-up they will secure the sixth seed in the AFC. But the “Sacksonville” Jaguars are the best defensive team in the league and wont be an easy task for the Titans, so even with a loss they can make the playoffs with a Bills loss and a Los Angeles Chargers loss.

Los Angeles Chargers & Buffalo Bills

Date: Sunday 12/31/17
Game Time:
Chargers vs Raiders 4:25 PM, Bills vs Dolphins 4:25 PM
TV Channel: CBS
Location: Stubhub Center, Carson/ Hard Rock Stadium, Miami

Two teams who are still in the hunt are the Los Angeles Chargers (8-7) and Buffalo Bills (8-7) but will both need some help to get in.

The Chargers take on the Oakland Raiders at 4:25 PM on CBS, if the Chargers can get a win they will need the Ravens to win and the Titans to lose to secure the sixth seed.

The Buffalo Bills take on the Miami Dolphins at 4:25 PM on CBS. The Bills will need to win in Miami and hope for a loss by the Titans and Chargers in order for Buffalo to secure the sixth seed.

Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers

Instagram Photo

Date: Sunday 12/31/17
Game Time
: 4:25 PM
TV Channel: FOX
Location: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta

The defending NFC Champions Atlanta Falcons (9-6) are having an up and down season coming off a devastating loss in the Super Bowl. With the loss of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan the Falcons offense has not looked as explosive as last season. With all that being said they still come into week 17 in control of their own fate. The Falcons take on division rival Carolina Panthers, if they can win they are in as the sixth seed in the NFC. If they lose they will need a Seattle loss to keep playoff hopes alive.

Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals

Instagram Photo

Date: Sunday 12/31/17
Game Time
: 4:25 PM
TV Channel: FOX
Location: Century Link Field, Seattle

The Seahawks have had an interesting last few weeks of the season. Players almost going into the stands to fight fans, and some in house fighting between to key players on the defense (Earl Thomas & Bobby Wagner). But somehow they find themselves still in the position of possibly making the playoffs. They will need to defeat division rival Cardinals and hope for a Atlanta Falcons loss. Due to a head to head loss to the Falcons, if the Seahawks lose their season will be over.

Note: All teams fighting for a playoff spot will have the extra advantage of playing in front of their home fans except for the Buffalo Bills who will have to win on the road.

Teachers Tweet The Darndest Things: Here Are The Top 5 Craziest College Professor Tweets Of 2017

Some college professors just can’t keep their opinions in check. And when they get drunk on their own outlandish rhetoric, sometimes they find themselves on the unemployment line. But that all depends on what was said in the classroom or online, particularly on Twitter where a relatively small voice can be amplified to a global community and one small error in judgment can mean curtains to your reputation and career.

The results of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election left some leftist professors visibly angry and looking towards social media to vent their undying hatred towards current President Donald Trump. Some of those enraged intellects made the list of the top 5 craziest college professor tweets…

5. A Professor, Who Taught A Course On Beyoncé, Wishes Someone “Would Just Shoot [Trump] Outright”

“Trump is a f***ing joke,” tweeted Kevin Allred. “I wish someone would just shoot him outright.”

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin. Big mistake.

Allred was hired by Montclair State University only a short time before sending out that tweet. He never made it to his first lecture at the college as he was fired after wishing that someone would shoot the president and then went on Twitter to write about it. What a professional.

“It’s funny cuz [sic] in my interview [Montclair State was] super excited about me being young, hip, and calling out power,” Allred said. “Guess not in practice, huh?”

Something tells me this teacher should have just stuck to lecturing about Beyoncé. Definitely not a good example for all the single ladies, Kev!

4. This Professor Says He’d “Be OK If #BetsyDeVos Was Sexually Assaulted”

An Austin Community College professor took to Twitter to discuss sexual assault. And no, this isn’t about the #MeToo Movement. This is a professor writing on Twitter that he’d “be ok” if the current U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was sexually assaulted.

“I’m not wishing for it…but I’d be ok if #BetsyDeVos was sexually assaulted,” wrote Robert Ranco, a now-former professor at Austin Community College.

A few days later, Ranco resigned from his role as a paralegal studies adjunct professor. Following his resignation, his employer released the following statement: “I wasn’t going to make a rash decision about a member of this family just to appease people on social media…that said, I considered the health of everyone in our organization, promised my partners and my employees that we would act according to the values of our firm, and sat down to speak with Mr. Ranco.”

Ranco later called his comment about Devos “harsh” and went on to delete both that tweet and his account.

3. A University of Tampa Professor Gets Canned For Suggesting That Hurricane Harvey Is Instant Karma For Texas Because They’re A Red State

“I don’t believe in instant Karma but this kinda feels like it for Texas,” tweeted out University of Tampa professor Kenneth L. Storey. “Hopefully this will help them realize the GOP doesn’t [sic] care about them.”

Storey sent these tweets out during Hurricane Harvey in August 2017. The University of Tampa fired the professor after his tweet suggesting that the hurricane is karma for Texas Republicans being Texas Republicans as if that’s a crime worthy of the deathly destruction brought on by a Category 4 storm. It’s one thing to hope your political enemies lose elections. It’s another thing to suggest that their voters should suffer the fury of Harvey.

It’s also worth noting that Harris County voted Democratic during the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, choosing Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. This county includes the city of Houston, which was greatly devastated by Hurricane Harvey. More than two dozen counties in Texas voted for Clinton, including Dallas, Bexar, Travis, El Paso, Hidalgo and Fort Bend.

Trump only won Texas by a 9 percent margin. He received 4,685,047 votes, while Clinton pulled in 3,877,868 votes.

Fate of Professor: FIRED!

2. Drexel University Professor Says That The Worst Shooting In U.S. History (The Las Vegas Massacre) “Is What Happens” When White People “Don’t Get What They Want”

Teachers Tweet The Darnest Things: Here Are The Top 5 Craziest College Professor Tweets Of 2017

“White people and men are told that they are entitled to everything,” said George Ciccariello-Maher, a now-former professor at Drexel University. He said that October’s massacre in Las Vegas “is what happens when they don’t get what they want.”

Following this remark, Drexel University put Professor Ciccariello-Maher on leave. The school cited threats made towards the controversial professor as a reason for the professor’s suspension, along with a concern for the general safety of the campus community. The university had allowed Ciccariello-Maher to continue teaching, but only in an online capacity.

“More and more, professors like me are being targeted by a coordinated right-wing campaign to undermine our academic freedom,” wrote Ciccariello-Maher on an October 10th column for The Washington Post, “one that relies on misrepresentation and sometimes outright lying, and often puts us and our students in danger.”

The professor continued his firebrand rhetoric into November. Regarding the shooting at a Texas church (which left 26 people dead), he asked independent news program Democracy Now!, “What is it that makes white men so prone to this kind of behavior?”

Ciccariello-Maher concluded his race-based argument with, “Whiteness is a structure of privilege and it’s a structure of power, and a structure that, when it feels threatened, you know, lashes out.”

His out-of-school suspension from Drexel University inspired a petition from 70 Cornell professors calling for his full reinstatement. “It was incumbent on Drexel University to defend [Ciccariello-Maher’s] academic freedom,” said the professors in their petition. “Drexel University’s Provost unilaterally suspended Professor Ciccariello-Maher without providing a hearing or even consulting with a duly constituted faculty body.”

The petition also included the statement, “Professor Ciccariello-Maher is only the latest in a growing list of academics, particularly scholars of color, facing sanctions from employers who see fit to capitulate to the right-wing’s campaign to suppress academic freedom.”

He received the nickname of the “White Genocide Professor” following a tweet he sent out on December 24, 2016, writing, “All I want for Christmas is white genocide.” A day later, he followed this statement up with, “To clarify: when the whites were massacred during the Haitian revolution, that was a good thing indeed.”

When later questioned about what he meant by his Christmas wish for “white genocide,” he said that he was only mocking the idea of a “white genocide” which he calls a conspiracy theory that is “a figment of the racist imagination.”

On the morning of Thursday, December 28, 2017, Ciccariello-Maher ultimately quit his job at Drexel University, making a public announcement for his official departure from the school.

His resignation will officially go into effect on Monday, January 1, 2018.

Recap: A total of 58 lives were lost in the deadliest shooting in U.S. history. Professor Ciccariello-Maher said that this tragedy is a result of white people not getting what they want.

Fate of Professor: He Quit

1. California State University Professor Says That “Trump Must Hang” And The “Execution Of Two Republicans” Would Be Justice For Each Deported Immigrant

Teachers Tweet The Darnest Things: Here Are The Top 5 Craziest College Professor Tweets Of 2017

Tom Pennington/Getty Images

“To save American democracy, Trump must hang,” tweeted Fresno professor Lars Maischak, who is still employed by California State University. “The sooner and the higher, the better. #TheResistance #DeathToFascism.”

He added, “#TheResistance #ethniccleansing Justice = The execution of two Republicans for each deported immigrant.”

Professor Maischak was eventually put on administrative leave following the offending tweets.

“I can assure you that I do not condone or advocate for murder or violence, and that I do not intend to commit any act, or acts, of murder or violence,” said Maischak after the release of the tweets. He then argued that his statement “Trump must hang” established a “logical necessity” rather than incitement to violence.

The professor will resume teaching classes in the Spring 2018 semester.

Bonus Round: Professor Argues That Algebra and Geometry Perpetuate White Privilege And “In Many Levels, Mathematics Itself Operates As Whiteness”

Teachers Tweet The Darnest Things: Here Are The Top 5 Craziest College Professor Tweets Of 2017

Shutterstock

No, this wasn’t an outlandish tweet. This argument was actually featured in a published mathematics education book for teachers, providing awareness to “identity politics” inclusion in the subject of math.

University of Illinois professor Rochelle Gutierrez believes that algebra and geometry promote “white privilege” because math proficiency promotes discrimination against minority students if they perform poorly relative to their white counterparts.

“On many levels, mathematics itself operates as Whiteness,” she argues, according to Campus Reform. “Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as White.”

The professor argues that subjects such as algebra and geometry perpetuate racism and white privilege. She’s concerned that “curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans.”

You can’t make this stuff up, people! Someone should have told her that “algebra” is an Arabic word, meaning “reunion of broken parts.

And by the way, I was terrible at math. Case closed!

Award-winning novelist Sue Grafton passed away today at the age of 77. Grafton is most-famous for her mystery-detective books known as “the alphabet novels.” She died in Santa Barbara, California, on Thursday, December 28, 2017, after a two-year battle with cancer. Her death was announced the following day by her daughter Jamie on Facebook.

“I am sorry to tell you all that Sue passed away last night after a two year battle with cancer,” wrote her daughter on Facebook. “She was surrounded by family, including her devoted and adoring husband Steve.”

Following the announcement of Grafton’s death, author Christopher Rice sent out a tweet that said that he is, “Shocked and saddened to hear of #SueGrafton ‘s passing. She was a titan in the mystery genre. I never got the chance to meet her, but by all accounts she was a class act who was consistently generous to new and aspiring writers.”

Sue Grafton has been releasing her “alphabet mystery novels” since “A” Is for Alibi first hit bookshelves on April 15, 1982. Her final novel Y is for Yesterday was released on August 24, 2017. Her daughter said that there won’t be a novel for the letter “Z” as a result of her mother’s death. Jamie wrote on Facebook that “as far as we in the family are concerned, the alphabet now ends at Y.”

Grafton has spent a long life spent writing novels, screenplays, and short stories. She published her first novel way back in 1967 and remained a relative author well into the twenty-first century. Let’s see how much money this highly-successful writer has in the bank….

Sue Grafton Net Worth as of 2018: $50 Million

Sue Grafton’s net worth is estimated at a cool $50 million. She’s most famous for her “alphabet novels” which has earned this author many awards, including the first two Anthony Awards for Best Novel (1986 & 1987). She’s also the recipient of the 2000 YWCA of Lexington Smith-Breckinridge Distinguished Woman of Achievement Award. Four years later, she won  the Ross Macdonald Literary Award for “a California writer whose work raises the standard of literary excellence.”

Let’s take a look at this legendary writer’s road to excellence…

Sue Grafton’s Early Years

Instagram Photo

Sue Taylor Grafton was born on April 24, 1940, in Louisville, Kentucky. Her father was C. W. Grafton, a detective novelist who would pass down this talent to his daughter later in life. Grafton’s mother’s name is Vivian Harnsberger.

In 1961, Grafton graduated from the University of Louisville with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in humanities and fine arts. At 18-years-old, she took up writing and completed her first novel four years later. She was able to publish another novel, but both books weren’t paying the bills. She looked to writing screenplays for television movies as a better means of income. In 1979, she screenplay Walking Through the Fire earned her a Christopher Award. She also wrote screenplays for TV movies such as Sex and the Single Parent, Mark, I Love You, and Nurse.

The Alphabet Novels

Instagram Photo

Grafton was inspired to write “the alphabet novel” after reading through The Gashlycrumb Tinies, a dark tale of ways children can die based on the letters of the alphabet. She later adapted this concept for her series of mystery-detective novels. The series stars a female private investigator named Kinsey Millhone, who lives in 1980’s Santa Teresa, a fictional town based on the real-life city of Santa Barba, California. Every book in the series is seen from Millhone’s perspective. This character has also appeared in a range of short stories written by Grafton.

She has written 27 books in her alphabet mystery series. She passed away before being able to write the 28th book in the series, which would predictable involve the letter “Z.”

Over the years, Grafton has taken home many awards, including the 2009  Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. She’s a 3-time  Shamus Award-winner for Best Hardcover Novel.

The 77-year-old author was very adamant about not selling her books for TV or film adaptations. She even threatened to haunt her own children if they decided to sell the film rights to her books after she died.

Rest in peace, Sue Grafton.

In this years Fiesta Bowl the Washington Huskies are battling the Nittany Lions of Penn St. This game is going to be electric with big plays left and right! Both teams are coming off impressive seasons, both finishing with a 10-2 record. Washington is led by dynamic play maker Dante Pettis, Pettis is a dynamic player in both the passing and return games. It will be interesting to see which player can make more big plays Pettis or stand out running back for Penn State, Saquan Barkley, who was name 1st All American Athlete.

The Washington Huskies had put together a fantastic season, their only losses coming in a heartbreaking 13-7 loss to Arizona St and a 30-22 back breaker to Stanford. The Huskies ended their season in grand fashion blowing out #13 Washington St 41-14. Washington’s real hope to win this game lies ion special teams. If they can control Barkley in the return game and Pettis can break some big returns the Huskies might just have a shot.

Penn State who found itself ranked as high as #3 in the country this year had a disappointing finish including a blown lead to Ohio St and a bizarre loss to Michigan St. That’s all in the past now, Penn State is led by Saquan Barkley, he is their heart beat, their explosiveness, their big threat. Trace McSorrley their QB is a heck on an athlete as well so if the Huskies want to have a chance to win they’re going to have to keep these guys in the middle of the field and contained.

On these days, all non-essential federal government offices are closed and all federal employees are paid for the holiday. Private employees who are required to work on federal holidays may receive holiday pay on top of their normal pay. Any federal holiday that falls on a weekend is usually observed on the closest weekday.

New Years Day is obviously observed on Jan. 1 and it celebrates the beginning of the Gregorian calendar year. There are many things that people do to celebrate the new year including, counting down to midnight, watching the ball drop in Times Square and even fireworks and parties. New Years often serves as the traditional end to the holiday season.

We are all in for a night full of epic fights! The main event is going to absolutely wild when Cyborg takes on Holly Holm. These are arguably 2 of the best female fighters in the sport, the both dominate the competition and have a real mean streak to them. Cyborg is the best of the best, the cream of the crop. She lost her first career UFC fight and has not lost since. She comes into this fight with an 18-1 record and is looking to make it 19-1.

Holly Holm first made real headlines across the fighting world when she viciously knocked out Ronda Rousey in UFC193. After that Holm dropped 3 straight bouts. She did claim another KO victory in her last fight to start the turn around. Holm comes into this fight at 11-3 all time. She is going to get everything she can handle with Cyborg. My personal opinion is that Cyborg will take this fight in the 2nd round.

Miami FL vs. Wisconsin Live Stream: How to Watch Orange Bowl Online

In the third weekend of bowl games, there is a game between two elite opponents. These teams are the Miami Hurricanes and the Wisconsin Badgers. Both teams had above average expectations this season but managed to exceed those expectations by winning at least ten games and by qualifying for a phenomenal bowl game. However, both teams had the opportunity to play in an even better bowl game had they won their conference championships.  Either teams might have even qualified for the college football playoff had either team been able to win their conference’s title game. Now, both teams will look to prove that they are truly elite by winning this bowl game.

The Miami Hurricanes entered the season with several question marks. The largest issue was the departure of starting quarterback Brad Kaaya. Kaaya, in his college career, had 69 touchdown passes and over 9,000 yards passing. Replacing him was going to be extremely difficult for the Hurricanes until they stumbled upon junior quarterback Malik Rosier. This season, Rosier threw for 25 touchdown and over 2,900 passing yards along with 11 interception. His mobility and throwing accuracy are a lethal combo that helps keep defenses on their toes whenever he touches the ball. However, Rosier struggled down the stretch and was a huge reason why the Hurricanes lost to Pittsburgh and Clemson in the final two games of the season. If Miami plans on winning this game, Rosier will need to play extremely well against Wisconsin’s elite defense.

Wisconsin’s success so far this season is due, in large part, to freshman running back Jonathan Taylor. Taylor has looked amazing this season with 1,847 yards rushing and 13 rushing touchdowns. Taylor entered the season behind both Bradrick Shaw and Chris James on the depth chart but became the undisputed starter after his amazing 223 yard performance against Florida Atlantic back in early September. Taylor’s success has also led to more opportunities in the passing game for quarterback Alex Hornibrook via play-action passes which might lead to some big passing plays against Miami.

As for my prediction, I have to side with Miami. Although I think that Wisconsin is a better all-around team, this is basically a home game for the Hurricanes. I expect the stadium to be filled with Hurricanes fans as Miami forces Alex Hornibrook into multiple turnovers. I expect Rosier to play better due to the extra time off as he leads the Hurricanes to a victory.

UCF vs. Auburn Live Stream: How to Watch The Peach Bowl Online

WOOO!!! I am so jacked up for this one between the Undefeated UCF Knights and the Auburn Tigers! This game is going to feature two of the top coaches in america in Gus Malzahn and Scott Frost. For those of you who have been living under a rock Scott Frost will be leaving UCF for Nebreska after this game so you better bet this ones going to be emotional! Props to Frost though for not jumping ship *cough *cough* Jimbo Fischer *cough *cough* and actually finishing what he started.

Auburn comes into this one after seeing its National Title hopes slip through their fingers as they lost to Georgia 28-7. Auburn finished 10-3 with its 3 losses coming at Clemson, at LSU and of course i just mentioned Georgia. But Auburn defeated the #1 team in the country not once but twice!! They beat Georgia and then 2 weeks later took care of Alabama, both teams find themselves in the playoff. Auburn has played fantastic football on all 3 phases but they rely most on RB Kerroyn Johnson, who was battling a pretty severe shoulder injury during the SEC Championship. If he’s fully healthy this could be a loooong day for UCF

Scott Frost might be my favorite coach in america behind Lane Kiffin. Frost is unlike most coaches because instead of recruiting at his new school Nebraska he is coaching the bowl game for his soon to be ex employer. I will say the locker room is fully behind Frost who played his college ball at Nebraska. If UCF wants to have a shot in this game they’re going to have to be extremely efficient on offense but most of all they’re going to have to slow down Auburns run game. I don think UCF has the size, strength or speed to beat Auburn. Their only hope is that they’re more fired up than Auburn is and they can jump on them early.

College Basketball Power Rankings 2017: Week 9 Rankings

As college basketball smoothly transitions from 2017 to 2018, ambitious and competitive programs will already have their sights set on the opening day of the NCAA Tournament. While there is still plenty of conference basketball to be played until then, these forthcoming contests will be crucial in deciding coveted seeding spots and which bubble teams will inevitably be worthy of competing with the big boys of college basketball. When you also consider that both college and pro football are coming close to their highly anticipated crescendoes, college basketball will emphatically take over the spotlight throughout each week until March Madness tips off in just a couple of months.

1. Michigan State Spartans

While the top-ranked Spartans have not played a power five opponent in some time, they have dominated their inferior opponents with ease. With Big 10 play starting for the Spartans this week, this program will get a chance to emphatically prove their number one ranking is well deserved.

2. Duke Blue Devils

If the Blue Devils want to remain elite and respected in the ACC, they have to improve on defense (73.9 PAPG). When you consider how potent this program is in every other facet of the game of basketball, having even an average defense would be more than enough to allow the Blue Devils to reign supreme as a national powerhouse program.

3. Xavier Musketeers

Although the Musketeers have been living dangerously recently, they have still somehow managed to dig deep and win games that appear to be out of reach down the stretch. It may not be ideal, but the Musketeers have a cerebral offense that is extremely difficult to contain when they are able to divvy out opportunities to all of their shooters (17.9 APG).

4. West Virginia Mountaineers

Like with most college basketball programs, there are times when not everything is in sync. Despite relinquishing 79 points to Oklahoma State, the Mountaineers were able to lean on their confident shooters to win their most recent game (scored 85 points). If the Mountaineers can put it all together against Oklahoma this week, they may quickly become the team to beat in the Big 12.

5. Wichita State Shockers

Aside from an inconsistent defense (70.2 PAPG), the Shockers have been one of the most well-balanced teams in college basketball and have performed admirably even in their losses. They may not always win pretty, but their disciplined nature combined with their reliable playmakers will allow them to persevere more often than not.

6. Villanova Wildcats

To be fair, the Wildcats most recent loss was due to the Butler Bulldogs shooting at an unprecedented level (Bulter shot 68.2% three-point range) rather than Villanova being incompetent. With that being said, the Wildcats need to establish a stronger rebounding presence (35.6 RPG) if they hope to reap the awards of an offense that can do it all (88.1 PPG).

7. Arizona State Sun Devils

Although the Sun Devils would have been ecstatic to have won on the road against Arizona, this is still a program that has the elite talent and coaching to be competitively ruthless in the Pac-12. If the Sun Devils can improve slightly on defense (72.6 PAPG), this team could easily win the conference outright by the end of the season.

8. Virginia Cavaliers

After a close defensive win over Boston College, the Cavaliers have to be feeling mixed emotions despite their winning ways. Although their top-ranked defense has been effective more often than not, it has proven to be susceptible to opponents that are proficient at shooting the basketball. Ultimately, the Cavaliers will have to overcome the likes of Duke and North Carolina to prove that their physical yet predictable style of basketball is enough to take down the elite opposition.

9. Oklahoma Sooners

Despite their disturbing defensive inefficiencies (79.9 PAPG), the Sooners have been able to overcome this weakness with the most prolific offense in the country (94.7 PPG). Although the Sooner’s one-dimensional nature may come back to haunt them at some point this season, it appears that as of now that the Sooners are more than capable of outscoring any opponent they go up against.

10. Kansas Jayhawks

While the Jayhawks were able to pump the breaks and avoid disaster after losing back-to-back games to Washington and Arizona State earlier in the season, this is still a program that looks wildly inconsistent on both offense and defense. Even with an elite head coach like Bill Self at the helm, the Jayhawks cannot simply wing it in the Big 12 if they hope to win consistently.

11. North Carolina Tar Heels

Although the Tar Heels would like to win games more handily than they have recently, you have to admire the perseverance and established camaraderie that has allowed this program to win in crunch time. From a talent perspective, the Tar Heels have the versatile personnel that can compete consistently on both offense and defense, an advantage that will serve them well throughout ACC play.

12. Miami Hurricanes

Since losing to New Mexico State, the relatively inconsistent Hurricanes have managed to win back-to-back games, one of which was against an ACC opponent in Pittsburgh. While Miami’s defense is and has been elite this season, their wavering offense needs to be a bit more precise and aggressive if they hope to keep up with the likes of Duke and North Carolina (74.8 PPG).

13. Arizona Wildcats

Although the Wildcats recent resurgence on offense has been impressive (scored 80 points or more in four out of their last five games), it has actually been their solid defense that has allowed them to win handily in their last four victories.

14. Kentucky Wildcats

For a freshmen-laden team that has had issues defensively, the athletically apt Wildcats have won far more games than they have lost. Most notably, the Wildcats looked superb in every way that mattered against their arch-rival Louisville in a blowout win. Clearly, the Wildcats have an incredibly high ceiling in terms of success, but it remains to be seen if this program can live up to their lofty expectations on a regular basis.

15. Purdue Boilermakers

While it may be too soon to suggest that the intriguing Boilermakers are an elite program, they clearly have an oppressive defense (have not allowed an opponent to score 70 points in their last six games) and a developing offense that is potent enough to topple the elite teams in college basketball. If the Boilermakers can maintain this type of unwavering consistency, they could not only dethrone Michigan State as the best team in the Big 10 but could also claim a spot in the AP Poll as a top-five program down the line.

16. TCU Horned Frogs

Despite losing a thriller to Oklahoma on Saturday, the Horned Frogs emphatically proved that their offense is for real and can keep up with the most prolific shooting teams in college basketball. However, the glaring weakness for the Horned Frogs is their porous defense (have relinquished 80 points or more in three of their last four games), a deficiency that needs to be improved if TCU hopes to stay at or near the top of the highly competitive Big 12.

17. Texas A&M Aggies

While having immense size can help a program win its fair share of physical contests, it is not enough to win consistently by itself. Turning the ball over 14 times per game while shooting just 34.5% from three-point range, the static Aggies once intimidating gusto is no longer enough to strike fear in the hearts of their respective opponents.

18. Cincinnati Bearcats

During their impressive five-game winning streak, the versatile Bearcats have progressively improved on both offense and defense (scored just 65 points at the start of the win streak, scored 82 points against Memphis in their most recent win). Although the American Conference as a whole is not particularly daunting from a competitive standpoint, there are certainly enough teams with decent rosters to continually test a Bearcats program that is on the rise.

19. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Defeating all three of the ranked opponents they have faced this year (Northwestern, Nevada, Baylor), the scrappy Red Raiders have continuously proved that their elite defense and capable offense are the real deal. Although three of their next four games will be against the best programs in the Big 12 (Kansas, Oklahoma, West Virginia), the Red Raiders should be able to hold their own if not outright win at least a couple of those affairs.

20. Seton Hall Pirates

Despite looking shaky defensively, the mentally tough Pirates have been explosive enough on offense to hold off their last four opponents. Although Seton Hall will inevitably have their ups and downs in terms of remaining competitive this year, they have the talent (four of their five starters are currently averaging double-digit points per game) to stay relevant in what looks to be a well-balanced and competitive Big East conference.

21. Clemson Tigers

With their lone loss coming against Temple earlier in the season, the defensively sound Tigers have gone on to stifle one opportunistic offense after another (have allowed just one opponent to score more than 70 points during their current eight-game winning streak). If the Tigers can continue to be this efficient defensively, their place at the top of the ACC standings may become a reality and not just a brief moment in the limelight.

22. Gonzaga Bulldogs

With the Bulldogs officially starting conference play, this highly talented yet underachieving program will most likely go unnoticed until March. While the Bulldogs played a strong non-conference schedule, losses to notable powerhouses such as Florida and Villanova severely diminished their chances of garnering a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

23. Arkansas Razorbacks

Quitely, the red-hot Razorbacks have dispatched two ranked opponents (Minnesota, Tennessee) during their six-game winning streak. Although the defense of the Razorbacks is not perfect (74.6 PAPG), their prolific offense has been relentless recently (90.4 PPG) and will be this programs catalyst for consistent success in the SEC.

24. Baylor Bears

When their offense is not clicking, the inconsistent Bears have succumbed to the more reputable teams in college basketball (all three losses have come against ranked opponents). Although the Bears have the size and athleticism to hold their own in the Big 12, they need to establish some continuity as a scoring unit if they hope to redeem themselves as the season progresses.

25. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Although it seems like a lifetime ago since Notre Dame was trouncing the likes of LSU and Wichita State on the basketball court, the Fighting Irish are slowly but surely finding their defensive rhythm again. With their most recent win over Georgia Tech, The Fighting Irish displayed their underrated ability to rebound the ball tenaciously (45 rebounds in win over Georgia Tech).

With 2018 now officially here, college basketball will continue to produce a plethora of thrilling and pertinent conference match ups until the NCAA Tournament commences. In particular, this week’s offerings of college basketball contests will feature elite teams from various power five conferences going head to head to determine who will be the conference kings, at least for now. Given the immense amount of parity that exists in college basketball this year, there will certainly be a multitude of shocking upsets and perhaps a couple of electric buzzer beaters in what should be a typical and exciting week of college hoops.
