Santa Monica College is dishing out $500k towards a ‘Social Justice and Gender Equity’ center. Out of the half a million dollar fund, they’ll be spending an estimated $60k to revamp a computer lab into a safe space.

Dr. Nancy Grass, dean of student life at Santa Monica College, led the charge in spearheading the campaign to establish the ‘Social Justice and Gender Equity’ center, which is reportedly the most money the school’s student government has spent in the history of Santa Monica College.

“The administration is basically demanding that the student government spend more money on anything that it has in the entire history of [Santa Monica College], all at once, without any significant discussion,” said Lee Peterson, supervisor of the school’s computer lab, in an interview with The Stringer.

Inside the half-million-dollar center, you’ll encounter “a Safe Space for Undocumented Students, DACA Students, LGBTQ+ Community, Religious Practice, and many more,” according to Ben Kolodny, vice president of Santa Monica’s Small Gov Club.

Over 300 students responded to the $500k center by signing a petition calling the whole project “a huge waste of student resources.”

Kolodny wrote up the petition in an attempt to “Save the Cayton Center!” He said that on Monday, December 24, the school will replace the Cayton Center Computer lab with a “Social Justice Center and Safe Space.”

Associated Students president Jennifer Chen seemed to praise the development of the center by looking on the bright side, as the renovation will reportedly come with more computers and printers for students to use.

After 13 weeks of college football, it is finally conference championship week. In the Big 12 title game, there is a contest between two Big 12 teams powerhouses. These teams are the TCU Horned Frogs and the Oklahoma Sooners. Both teams started the season with bowl game expectations but no one expected TCU to be competing for a conference championship. TCU was unranked in the preseason rankings and was expected to finish in the middle of the Big 12 standings. Oklahoma, on the other hand, started the season with the expectations of competing for a national championship. If Oklahoma wins this Saturday, the Sooners will be a lock to make the college football playoff.

The TCU Horned Frogs are currently 10-2 and are looking to prove that they are worthy of a Big 12 championship. The Horned Frogs looked poised to potentially go undefeated this season before getting upset by Iowa State about a few month ago. Now, the Horned Frogs are ranked the 11th best team in college football according to the AP poll and a victory over Oklahoma would propel them back into the top ten.

TCU’s success is due to quarterback Kenny Hill. So far this season, Hill has 19 touchdowns with only five interceptions. Hill has been extremely accurate in the pocket this season and has a completion percentage of 66.6 to prove it. Last season, Hill threw 13 interceptions and was pretty poor in the realm of ball security. However, those issues look to be behind Hill and TCU is in title contention as a result.

The Oklahoma Sooners started off their season extremely well and defeated a top five ranked Ohio State team in their second game of the season. The Sooners carried that momentum towards a 4-0 record and looked like a favorite to win the NCAA championship. However, Oklahoma was upset by Iowa State which damaged their 2017 title hopes. Since then, the Sooners have won seven straight games and are once again competing for a national title.

Leading Oklahoma is none other than senior quarterback Baker Mayfield. This season, Mayfield has thrown for 37 touchdowns and over 4,000 yards along with five interceptions. This year, Mayfield has already carried his team to a 38-20 victory over TCU and he will look to duplicate that performance on Saturday. If Mayfield gets going, expect TCU’s defense to struggle once again.

As for my prediction, I have to side with Oklahoma. I think that Mayfield will be too much for this TCU defense to handle. TCU is a solid team and I expect the Horned Frogs to hang around but I think Mayfield will make some clutch plays down the stretch and lead the Sooners to a close victory.

A fatal car crash involving multiple cars at the Bay Bridge toll plaza has shut down several lanes in Oakland, California.

Oakland authorities are responding to the scene, where it had been confirmed that a driver hit multiple cars. A toll taker had been killed in the collision. The truck driver and a passenger were also confirmed to have suffered serious injuries.

At this time, it is expected that the lane will be closed for the time being.

A man has been arrested in the North Carolina, Amber Alert case of 3-year-old Mariah Woods, who is presumed dead, and authorities believe he had been close to the family.

The suspect, Earl Kimery, is believed to be the girl’s mother’s boyfriend, who had lived with the family. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including concealing death, in spite of the fact that the missing girl has not yet been found.

According to the arrest warrant:

[Kimery has been accused of] removing Mariah Woods’ body from the scene of her death and did conceal Mariah Woods’ death and body, knowing that Mariah died from unnatural causes. The defendant acted with deceit and intent to fraud

In addition, Kimery has been charged with obstruction of justice, second-degree burglary, larceny and possession of stolen property. In past cases, he had been charged with larceny, assault and drunk and disorderly conduct. He is currently being held at the Onslow County Detention Center, in lieu of a $1,010,000 bond.

According to a statement from the Sheriff’s office, while the body has not been found, evidence has reportedly caused them to believe that Mariah is dead.

“At this time, the location of Mariah is unknown,” the statement claimed, according to New York Daily News. “The searches now will shift to a recovery process.”

The Early Years

Jeffery is a South Carolina native, going on to play for the University of Southern Carolina. By 2011, he proved himself by being named the best overall player in the SEC by ESPN.

2012-2016

After college, Jeffery had been drafted by the Chicago Bears for the 2012 season, where he had been the first player in that year’s draft class to sign. Originally signed to a four-year contract, in 2016, Jeffery was given a franchise tag, binding him to the Bears for an extra year in 2016.

2017-Present

In March 2017, Jeffery signed on with the Philadelphia Eagles, with a one year, $14 million contract. Playing 11 games this season, Jeffery garnered 43 catches for 619 yards and seven touchdowns. Before the year was up, however, Jefferey was granted a four-year extension. Happy over the new arrangement, Jeffery said in a statement, according to ESPN:

First of all, I just want to thank Jeffrey Lurie and the entire Eagles organization. Like I said the other day, I love it here. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to play for this organization and for these fans. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms and now I’m looking forward to being here for a long time. Winning championships, that’s most important to me. A lot of players make a lot of money, but some of them never make the playoffs, never get to experience a lot of things. Like being here in Philly, the atmosphere where we all want that for each other. We all want to go to the playoffs. We all want to win a championship. We’re all together.

With 13 weeks of the NCAA football season in the books, there is an SEC contest between the Auburn and the Georgia Bulldogs for the conference championship. Both teams had extremely similar expectations entering the season and nothing much has changed since then. Georgia is currently ranked number six in the country according to the AP poll and is poised to potentially win a national championship. Meanwhile, Auburn is 10-2 and is currently ranked the second best team in the country according to the AP poll. Whichever team loses will be officially knocked out of playoff contention.

The Auburn Tigers entered the season in the AP poll top 15 and were expected to compete for a conference championship. So far this season, the Tigers are 10-2 and look poised to win their first conference championship since 2013. However, Auburn’s perfect record was ruined by the number two ranked Clemson Tigers who defeated Auburn 14-6 back earlier this season. In that game, Auburn’s star quarterback Jarrett Stidham was sacked an astounding 11 times. Since then, Auburn has won nine of their last ten games including a victory over Alabama and have an serious chance of making the college football playoff.

Auburn’s offense is led by star quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Stidham was originally a quarterback for Baylor back in 2015 before transferring to Auburn in search of more playing time. In 2015, Stidham threw for 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Stidham is an extremely talented dual threat quarterback who can also generate tons of yards on the ground with his legs. So far this season, Stidham has 16 passing touchdowns with only four interceptions.

One reason for Stidham’s underwhelming statistics this season is the extremely talented running back group on this Auburn team. Auburn has three separate running backs with over 300 yards rushing and each of them have scored at least one rushing touchdown. Running backs Kam Martin, Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson have destroyed their competition this season and look to continue their success against Georgia. However, Johnson has become the head of Auburn’s rushing attack as the season has progressed. So far this season, Johnson has over 1,200 yards rushing along with 17 rushing touchdowns. If Auburn plans on winning this contest, expect Johnson to get the ball early and often.

Georgia started the season with extremely high hopes. The Bulldogs have lived up to those expectations so far and are currently 11-1. The most impressive part of their season thus far is who the Bulldogs have beaten. In the first four weeks, Georgia defeated top 25 ranked Notre Dame on the road and top 25 ranked Mississippi State at home. If Georgia manages to pull off this minor upset, it will be extremely tough for the committee to keep the Bulldogs out of the college football playoff.

Georgia’s success is due to freshman quarterback Jake Fromm. Fromm was expected to be the backup quarterback this season behind Jacob Eason. However, Eason got injured earlier this year and Fromm was thrown under the fire as the immediate replacement. However, Fromm has looked remarkable this season and has thrown for 19 touchdowns and only five interception.

However, Fromm’s success is also due to the success of Georgia’s running game this season. Georgia currently has three elite running backs on the roster and their success had opened up a lot of holes in the secondary for Fromm to exploit. Running backs Nick Chubb, D’Andre Swift and Sony Michel are each averaging over six yards per carry and have at least one touchdown. Either running back could be a starter on the majority of college football teams in division I. Unfortunately for Auburn, Georgia has all three.

Police are responding to reports of a shooting at Southpark Mall, also known as South Park or Colonial Heights Mall, in Virginia.

Details are unclear at this time, but it is believed that the victim was shot in the chest near a PacSun at the mall, and is expected to be treated at the VCU Medical Center. Police are searching the mall for suspects, but a description is not available at this time.

Update: According to ABC8 News, police have confirmed that there is no longer an active threat at the mall, which will resume normal operations within an hour. The mall had been on lockdown shortly after news of the shooting came to light.

According to NBC 12, Lt. Kilfer with Colonial Heights police confirmed that the victim, who is believed to have endured life-threatening injuries, knew the suspect. The suspect ran from the scene and is currently being searched for by police, although the mall has been evacuated and police do not believe there is any threat to the public. At this time, however, police do not currently have a motive for the shooting.

After 13 weeks of college football, there is a contest between two Big Ten powerhouses for the conference championship. These teams are the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Wisconsin Badgers. Both teams started the season with similar goals as both teams hoped to compete for a conference championship as well as a potential berth in the college football playoff. Ohio State was ranked in the AP preseason top five rankings and was expected to compete for a college football playoff spot under coach Urban Meyer. Ohio State is currently the eighth ranked team in the college football rankings and will look to remain in playoff contention. Meanwhile, Wisconsin is still undefeated and is currently the fourth ranked team in the country. Whichever team loses is guaranteed not to make the playoff so one can expect a really competitive game.

The Ohio State Buckeyes started off their season in disappointing fashion by losing to Oklahoma in the second game of the season. However, the Buckeyes rallied and won their next six games including a victory over Penn State. The Buckeyes looked like a potential candidate to win the NCAA championship. However, the Buckeyes got upset by conference rival Iowa shortly thereafter and fell in the rankings as a result. Ohio State have won the three games since that upset loss but it might be too late for the team to salvage their title hopes.

Ohio State’s success is due to star quarterback J.T. Barrett. So far this season, Barrett has thrown for 33 touchdowns and only seven interceptions along with over 2,700 yards passing. Barrett has also rushed for nine touchdowns this season and will look to stay in the Heisman race against Wisconsin on Saturday. Barrett entered the season with the hopes of being drafted in the upcoming NFL Draft. If Barrett continues to play like he has in the first 13 weeks, he should be selected in the latter half of the NFL Draft.

Wisconsin’s success so far this season is due, in large part, to freshman running back Jonathan Taylor. Taylor has looked amazing this season with 1,806 yards rushing and 13 rushing touchdowns. Taylor entered the season behind both Bradrick Shaw and Chris James on the depth chart but became the undisputed starter after his amazing 223 yard performance against Florida Atlantic back in early September. Taylor’s success has also led to more opportunities in the passing game via play-action passes which could lead to some big passing plays against overly aggressive defenses.

As for my prediction, I will tentatively side with Wisconsin. The Badgers have won of the best defenses in all of college football and I think it will prove it against the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s quarterback J.T. Barrett is also dealing with a knee injury so I expect him to struggle in this contest. I think Wisconsin squeaks this game out by a field goal.

After 13 weeks of college football, there is a contest between two ACC teams competing for the ACC championship. These teams are the Clemson Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes. Both teams started the season with bowl game expectations but no one expected Miami to be competing for a national championship. Virginia was expected to make a bowl game this season and that goal has already been reached. With both teams seeking to improve their resume, expect this game to be closer than people think.

Clemson started the season with the weight of the world on its shoulders. Not only were the Clemson Tigers the defending NCAA football champions, but the university also had to replace the team’s starting quarterback in Deshaun Watson. In his college career, Watson led the Tigers to two consecutive championship games including a thrilling 35-31 victory against Alabama. In that title game, Watson was magnificent as he threw for over 400 yards along with 4 total touchdowns. As a result, Watson was drafted by the Houston Texans with the 12th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Replacing Watson is junior quarterback Kelly Bryant. Bryant, the 20-year-old from South Carolina, has looked promising this season. Statistically, Bryant has thrown for 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. However, Bryant has also contributed heavily in the running game with 639 rushing yards and ten touchdowns. If Bryant is able to use his mobility to pick up first downs, I do not think Miami will be able to win this contest.

However, the main reason for the Tigers’ success this season is its defense. Clemson’s defense currently ranked fourth in points allowed and is regarded as one of the best defenses in all of college football. Clemson’s defensive line has struck fear into the hearts of quarterbacks this season and will look to maintain that against the Hurricanes. One player, in particular, to look out for is a junior defensive end, Austin Bryant. Bryant had four sacks against Auburn and will play a vital role if Clemson plans on dominating the line of scrimmage on Saturday. Clemson is currently the #1 ranked team in the country and a victory against the #7 ranked Miami Hurricanes would lock Clemson in the college football playoff.

The Miami Hurricanes entered the season with several question marks. The largest issue was the departure of starting quarterback Brad Kaaya. Kaaya, in his college career, had 69 touchdown passes and over 9,000 yards passing. Replacing him was going to be extremely difficult for the Hurricanes until they stumbled upon junior quarterback Malik Rosier. So far this season, Rosier has 25 touchdown and nine interception. His mobility and throwing accuracy are a lethal combo that helps keep defenses on their toes whenever he touches the ball. If Miami plans on winning this  game, Rosier will need to play extremely well. This game is especially important for Miami considering the fact that Miami needs to win  in order to potentially make the college football playoff.

As for my prediction, I have to side with Clemson. I expect Clemson’s defensive line to dominate the game as Bryant will use his legs to generate some points on offense. Clemson should win this game by a few possessions.

Brian Ross is an American journalist who was most known for his work on various ABC News programs, such as Nightline, Good Morning America, 20/20 and ABC News Radio, after joining the news organization in 1994. Earlier in December, however, ABC News suspended him for four weeks without pay over a “serious error” found in an “exclusive” concerning former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Using an anonymous source, Ross had claimed that Flynn was prepared to testify that President Donald Trump told him to contact Russians at a time before entering office. Later in the day, Ross changed his story to that Trump had been president-elect at the time, when he previously said it was at a time when he was only a candidate.

A tweet from the news organization concerning the report garnered around 25,000 shares before eventually being deleted. It was believed that Ross’ mistake even temporarily made a hit in the financial markets, as the Dow fell more than 350 points, although stocks have recovered since then.

As ABC said in a statement:

We deeply regret and apologize for the serious error we made yesterday. The reporting conveyed by Brian Ross during the special report had not been fully vetted through our editorial standards process. As a result of our continued reporting over the next several hours ultimately we determined the information was wrong and we corrected the mistake on air and online.

It is vital we get the story right and retain the trust we have built with our audience — these are our core principles. We fell far short of that yesterday.

A few ABC employees added, according to CNN Money, that the incident caused much internal embarrassment for the company. These comments had been made anonymously, as the company had not allowed them to publicly discuss the matter. As one such anonymous employee said in a statement:

It makes me cringe. This is not what any networks needs when people are so quick to say ‘fake news’ to you. It makes me sick to my stomach.

CVS has agreed to buy Aetna for about $69 billion in a deal that could easily affect the American healthcare industry, although the deal still needs to be approved.

What do we know about the deal?

Considered one of the largest transactions of the ending year, the possible deal will combine the United States’ largest health insurers with a drugstore giant, helping to blur the lines of the healthcare industry. The new deal could also help transform CVS’  near 10,000 pharmacy storefronts into community medical hubs, that can be used for primary care and basic procedures. CVS would pay about $207 per share under this new deal, with around $145 a share being in cash, with the rest in stock.

Dan Mendelson, president of Avalere Health, a consulting firm, explained how this could be beneficial:

Every health insurance company wants to get closer to the consumer. If a patient is better off by getting a home health visit to have someone go through their medications to take them off 10 and eliminate those medications, I want that to happen — as opposed to someone just filling prescriptions.

The deal might be a response to competition with Amazon

It is thought that CVS had interest in the deal due to competition with Amazon, who may be interested in selling drugs in the near future. According to The Washington Post, Martin Gaynor, a professor of economics and health policy at Carnegie Mellon University, speculated that the deal would not do much to quell competition, adding that CVS already serving as Aetna’s pharmacy benefit manager might make the deal redundant:

A big question mark for me is how does it make the merged company better. I wonder about a lot of these mergers, whether they’re really driven by a true increase in value of the long-term value of the company — as opposed to seeking a short-term bump in stock prices.
