I’m not a big action movie guy. I cannot stand the Fast franchise (or is it the Furious franchise? And I hear they’re going to space soon?). I’m a HUGE comic book guy, and even the Marvel movies are a little too bright and poppy for me. So whenever a new attempted action franchise springs up, my expectations are low, and my desire to see it is even lower.

Then there was Kingsman: The Secret Service. I saw the trailer with the English Tom Hanks (Collin Firth), Samuel L. Jackson, and some British kid, and thought, ‘Eh, another average action movie that I’ll roast a bowl to when it’s out on HBO.’ You know what I mean? Kind of like John Wick — when trailers for that dropped, people were all like ‘f*ck Keanu Reeves’, and now here we are a couple years later, and the John Wick franchise is one of the most enjoyable in Hollywood.

But then reviews started rolling out, one thing lead to the next, and me and my fraternity brothers at Rutgers went down to the school’s theater to see what all the hype was about. Spoiler alert: it was great.

It was perfectly paced, genre-norm eschewing, consistently funny, ironic, unorthodox, action-packed, and most surprisingly, it had characters worth investing in. I know you were bummed when Harry Hart got clipped, and I know you were pumped when you heard he was coming back for the sequel (because he was that great of a character that the franchise couldn’t afford to keep him dead).

Plus, it had this scene, which pound-for-pound, can go toe-to-toe with any action scene from the past decade, whether that be a preposterous chase scene in a Fast movie, or the fantastically brutal reality of The Raid.

Well, it was only a matter of time until this soon to be legendary film moment permeated to the rest of the pop cultural zeitgeist, and the result is Family Guy, of all things, remaking the fight.

Brandon Zingale, former University of Missouri-Columbia freshman who was hospitalized in September 2016 due to alcohol poisoning, has sued the university’s Kappa Alpha fraternity, including three individual members, for hazing.

Zingale, who was an 18-year-old pledge at Kappa Alpha at the time of the incident, claims he was “coerced by active members ofo drink so much vodka that he nearly died” at the fraternity house in Columbia the night of September 27, 2016.

According to the lawsuit, after Zingale passed out, members of the fraternity left him alone, putting him to bed and attaching a backpack in an effort to keep him from rolling over and suffocating. The following morning when paramedics arrived, Zingale was found unconscious, foaming at the mouth.

Zingale’s BAC, almost 10 hours after he stopped drinking, was 0.41 percent, which is over five times the legal limit for driving in Missouri. According to reports, Zingale experienced ‘acute respiratory failure, nerve compression, and metabolic dysfunction.’

Defendants in the suit include the fraternity’s national organization Kappa Alpha Order and its Alpha Kappa chapter at Mizzou. The fraternity knew of the risk of hazing traditions involving heavy drinking and did not do enough to prevent its members’ dangerous activities, according to the suit.

Jacob Lee, president of the fraternity chapter at the time, Max McGrath and Ryan Heuermann, fraternity members, are also named in the suit, which alleges that the three students participated in the hazing of Zingale and did not get him emergency medical care fast enough.

One month after the incident, the University of Missouri kicked the Kappa Alpha fraternity off campus for five years. At the time, the fraternity released a statement that read “misuse of alcohol, and hazing, are each contrary to our values and are strictly and expressly prohibited by Kappa Alpha Order.”

The Kappa Alpha national organization conducted their own investigation, concluding that the incident involving Zingale did not constitute hazing.

In a statement, Zingale’s parents said: “We are hopeful that Brandon’s lawsuit will bring attention to the danger of alcohol hazing at fraternities and universities across the country.”

Michelle Schiffer, a 23-year-old former high school history teacher, has been arrested after she allegedly had sex with a former male teenage student.

Schiffer, 23, was charged with improper relationship with a student and sexual assault of a child. Authorities say Schiffer met with the 15-year-old boy in the parking lot of a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Cypress, Texas back in July of 2017. She then took the student Schiffer to her friend’s apartment in in the 7200 block of Barker Cypress where they had sex.

Court records indicate that authorities were tipped off the to the relationship after an anonymous student reported the situation to the Cypress-Springs High School principal. The anonymous student told Cheryl Henry, the principal at the school, that the victim was a former student of Schiffer’s and that he admitted to having a sexual relationship with the teacher.

Authorities quoted in court records allege Schiffer admitted to meeting the student at a Chick-fil-A restaurant and then said they had sex at a friend’s apartment in the 7200 block of Barker Cypress.

Schiffer also admitted that she’d had sexual contact with the student and smoked marijuana with him in her vehicle, according to the documents. The student was 15 years old at the time of the alleged incidents, records state.

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD released this statement: “When the alleged actions of the staff member were learned, she was immediately removed from campus and placed on administrative leave. We will continue to protect our students and not tolerate relationships of an inappropriate nature.”

Schiffer was released from jail on $30,000 bond, and if convicted, faces between two to 20 years in prison.

This is the latest in a string of teacher/student sex scandals this year. In November, Tennessee teacher Janet Smothers was arrested. Former nutrition teacher LaToya Parker was also arrested for a relationship with a student. Florida teacher Caroline Lawson was charged with sexual assault. 26-year-old Allyson Moran was also arrested for similar crimes. The 23-year-old high school teacher Katherine Ross Ridenhour was also arrested for an inappropriate relationship. Hunter Day, 22, was also arrested after a sting operation. Megan Kotarski was also arrested on similar charges.

While most fantasy football fans cling to the top rookies before the season starts, there is almost always a few talented newcomers that take some time to blossom. For every Kareem Hunt, there is an equally talented and vital prospect such as wideout Zay Jones who patiently wait on the sidelines to show off their coveted capabilities. Often times, it takes a serious injury to a veteran starter for these eager youngsters to get on the field, which may not be ideal initially but can be a blessing in disguise. With both Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson currently sidelined with injuries, the door has recently opened for first-year receiver Dede Westbrook to show off the abilities that made him such a prolific weapon in college.

Despite playing in just two games this season, Westbrook has already garnered a hefty target share (six targets against Cleveland, 10 targets against Arizona). As was the case when he played for Oklahoma, Westbrook is effectively dynamic and is especially deadly as a deep target (19.1 yards per reception during his final year with Oklahoma). While Westbrook has yet to flash his speedy, downfield catching capabilities (8.4 yards per receptions with Jaguars), his developing rapport with quarterback Blake Bortles should allow the rookie wideout to be featured much more prominently in those scenarios as the season progresses.

Running a 4.44 yards dash at the NFL combine, Westbrook has the burst to blow past opposing defenders and will be more effective at finding spots in the open field as he continues to garner more playing time. Although Westbrook may lack the physical size to be a trusted 50-50 pass catcher (weighs 178lbs), his potential to be a consistent home run scorer will allow him to avoid one on one confrontations with opposing defensive backs more often than not.

When all is said and done, Westbrook clearly has the potential to be an exciting wideout for the Jaguars during the final stretch of this season and into next year. Given his impressive target share and breakneck speed, Westbrook is clearly a capable wideout that has shown enough on the field to be relied on by Bortles. Going forward, Westbrook is a matchup-dependent flex play and may be worth keeping in dynasty leagues given his big-play potential.

Rick Pitino, the former head basketball coach a the University of Louisville, has sued the school for $37.6 million, claiming the university breached his contract by placing him on unpaid administrative leave without notice and then firing him last month with “no legally justified cause.”

Back in October, Pitino was fired following an FBI investigation into bribery and fraud in college basketball related to the steering of recruits to Adidas, sports agents and financial advisers. While Pitino claims he was unaware of any alleged payment from a Cardinals assistant to the family of Brian Bowen during the recruiting process, he was fired nonetheless.

“(Pitino) had no part whatsover in any scheme to pay the family of a UL recruit, or to otherwise improperly provide benefits to any recruit, as an inducement to join the basketball program,” said Steve Pence, Pitino’s lawyer, said in a statement.

Furthermore, following the FBI investigation, the University of Louisville announced that that Bowen, a freshman, will not be allowed to play for the school but can transfer to another if he wants.

The lawsuit states that the board’s actions violated his employment contract in two ways — first, during his suspension in September and again when he was fired in October.

In September, Pitino was “effectively fired” without proper notice, according to the lawsuit. The coach was placed on unpaid leave, locked out of his office and had access to his university email blocked. The lawsuit also alleges the university had no justification to fire Pitino “for cause” in October and failed to fix the breach within 30 days despite being notified of the breach by the coach. Claims made in a lawsuit represent only one side of the case.

Pitino is seeking $4.3 million a year — the value of his contract — from the date of the school’s last payment through its end in June 2026, or the value of his actual losses, which includes his personal Adidas contract. Adidas terminated its personal services contract with Pitino after he was fired. Pitino also filed a federal lawsuit against Adidas in October, alleging that the company deliberately damaged his reputation. The apparel company asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed this week.

John Karman, a spokesman for the University of Louisville, said the university is aware of the lawsuit, but declined to comment due to university policy.

A spokesman for a suspended Cal Poly fraternity apologized Wednesday morning for an end-of-year photo they acknowledged depicted “appropriated cultural and ethnic identities of our peers.”

In it, the students are wearing a variety of costumes, including several in overalls, one in what looks to be powder blue pimp suit and another in a sombrero. Many commenters thought one of the students was wearing a Native American headdress, but it’s actually a colorful dreadlock-style cap from Disneyland. Several of the men in the photo also are holding firearms. The group is posing behind a banner that reads “TRUMP — MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”

“The brothers of Alpha Gamma Rho-Chi Chapter would like to apologize for any discomfort caused by our end-of-the-year costume photograph. We as a fraternity take full responsibility for the lack of regard taken when dressing up for this photograph. The tradition of our end-of-year photo will not appropriate cultures in the future. We respect the diversity that exists in our chapter and at Cal Poly and will be more thoughtful in all that we do moving forward and how that can impact others,” the statement read.

The apology comes after a university spokesman said the school was aware of the photo and that the university’s Dean of Students and Greek Life offices planned to speak with the chapter about the picture.

Alpha Gamma Rho was previously suspended through spring semester due to violations of the university’s alcohol and drug policy and was previously suspended after an alleged sexual assault was reported in December 2014.

This UFC Fight Night contains a fight card with several underrated fighters within the UFC. Cyborg has looked unstoppable in her UFC career but Holm is definitely the toughest fighter that she has faced up to this point. Researchers observed 1,100 teenagers who had started college in the US with similar rates of academic success over two years. However, the participants all smoked different amounts of cannabis and consumed various levels of alcohol. Grade Point Average (GPA) data was tracked for each participant, while their previous exam results were also assessed.

The teenagers were then split into three groups: youths who used little or no alcohol or marijuana, people who drank a lot but didn’t smoke much pot, and heavy users of both substances. They found that the students who drank a lot but didn’t smoke tended to get lower grades during the first semester of college. However, they then went on to achieve similar grades in comparison with sober students, according to the study published in PLOS ONE.

For the first semester, the mostly sober student group had an average GPA of 3.1 and the heavy drinkers had an average GPA of 3.03 – the equivalent of a B. But for students who were heavy users of both substances, their academic success continued to decrease. They had an average GPA of 2.66, which is equivalent to a B- or a C+.

So, don’t let this study get you down, stoners. You’re just as smart as the rest of them, you just don’t give a shit, and that’s a virtue.

Back in 2014 during an Apple keynote conference, Irish rock band U2 took to the stage to announce their latest album, Songs of Innocence, which would be released the same day for free to over 500 million iPhone users. That same day lead singer for the band, Bono, would post a message on the band’s official website reading, “If you like Songs of Innocence, stay with us for Songs of Experience. It should be ready soon enough… although I know I’ve said that before.”

After three long years, that wait has finally come to a close with the release of Songs of Experience on December 1st, 2017. Intended to be a companion piece to Songs of Innocence, this new album will be collected as a thematic letters to people and places closest to Bono’s heart instead of his experiences as a child. Following his pretty serious bicycle accident in Central Park back in 2014, Bono hit the studio hard writing and recording for the new album which led to a delay in 2016 because of the world’s climate regarding the Brexit vote and the 2016 Presidential Election.

Somersworth Police

Elisha Mahar, a 20-year-old New Hampshire substitute teacher, was arrested after police say she gave students a vaping device and invited them to smoke marijuana.

Mahar, 20, of Rochester, N.H., has been charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

School officials reported the allegations against Mahar to the school resource officer on October 13, which prompted an investigation by the school resource officer and the detective division of the Somersworth Police Department.

The investigation found that the alleged incidents happened Mahar was still employed as a substitute teacher.

Police arrested a former Somersworth Middle School substitute teacher Thursday alleging that she provided a Vape smoking device to a middle school student, and allegations that she invited other middle school students to smoke marijuana — all while she was still employed as a teacher.

Elisha Mahar, 20, of 37 Gooseberry Circle, Rochester, was charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Somersworth Police arrested Mahar at 2:15 p.m. on the Class A misdemeanors.

According to police, school officials reported the allegations against Mahar to the school resource officer on Oct. 13. The case was then investigated by the school resource officer and the detective division of the Somersworth Police Department. According to Interim Superintendent Connie Brown, the number one priority for the Somersworth School District is keeping our students safe.

“As the Superintendent of School, I will make sure we cooperate fully with the investigation being conducted by the Somersworth Police Department into the allegations that a former substitute teacher endangered the welfare of our students.”

She was released on $5,000 bail and is next scheduled to appear in court on December 26.

Authorities are asking anyone information related to the case to call Somersworth police at 603-692-3131 or the department’s anonymous crime line at 603-692-9111.

The Giants will be battling outraged fans this week with their decision to bench Manning. Although head coach Ben McAdoo stated that he was interested in looking into other quarterbacks next year, it is strange that they wouldn’t just let Manning finish the season, especially considering the year the team has had. The Giants have had a tough run and Manning hasn’t been playing his best, but he has also been playing behind a pretty rough offensive line and lost two key players early on in the season.

What does hurt them is the fact they can’t win their Conference Championship. So Nick Saban’s going to need some help. I knew it.

Earlier in 2017, when writing about Subway’s disgusting and frankly offensive pulled pork and Fritos sandwich, I said this:

Let’s talk about the perpetually stinky (literally) Subway and their ‘Pulled Pork and Fritos’ sandwich. First of all, riddle me this: How is that pork being cooked? As far as I know, Subway doesn’t have a smoker, crock-pot, or grill at its restaurant. Red flag, right off the bat.

Welp, turns out they don’t even have to worry about cooking their meat, ’cause it isn’t even meat in the first place!

A DNA analysis conducted by researcher Matt Harnden at Trent University’s Wildlife Forensic DNA Laboratory tested the poultry content of six popular chicken sandwiches, finding that the chicken used in Subway sandwiches contained only about half chicken DNA. The other sandwiches tested were McDonald’s country chicken, Wendy’s grilled chicken sandwich, A&W chicken grill deluxe, and Tim Hortons Chipotle chicken grilled wrap.

Additionally, two Subway sandwiches were tested: the oven roasted chicken sandwich and the sweet onion chicken teriyaki.

An unadulterated piece of chicken from the store should come in at 100 per cent chicken DNA.  Seasoning, marinating or processing meat would bring that number down, so fast food samples seasoned for taste wouldn’t be expected to hit that 100 per cent targe

In the first round of tests, the lab tested two samples of five of the meat products, and one sample of the Subway strips. From each of those samples, the researchers isolated three smaller samples and tested each of those. They were all DNA tested and the score was then averaged for each sandwich. Most of the scores were “very close” to 100 per cent chicken DNA, Harnden says.

Subway’s results were such an outlier that the team decided to test them again, biopsying five new oven roasted chicken pieces, and five new orders of chicken strips. Those results were averaged: the oven roasted chicken scored 53.6 per cent chicken DNA, and the chicken strips were found to have just 42.8 per cent chicken DNA. The majority of the remaining DNA? Soy.

Subway released a statement denying the results of the study:

“SUBWAY cannot confirm the veracity of the results of the lab testing you had conducted. However, we are concerned by the alleged findings you cite with respect to the proportion of soy content. Our chicken strips and oven roasted chicken contain 1% or less of soy protein. We use this ingredient in these products as a means to help stabilize the texture and moisture. All of our chicken items are made from 100% white meat chicken which is marinated, oven roasted and grilled. We tested our chicken products recently for nutritional and quality attributes and found it met our food quality standards. We will look into this again with our supplier to ensure that the chicken is meeting the high standard we set for all of our menu items and ingredients.”

Next, they need to test the pulled pork. I bet you that’s about 30% real pork.

I give it another decade until Subway files for Chapter 7. It’s a trash company pedaling poison to the entire world and it needs to be stopped. Oh, and they also employ pedophiles.
