Russell Simmons, born October 4, 1957, is an American entrepreneur, producer and author. The chairman and CEO of Rush Communications, he co-founded the hip-hop music label Def Jam Recordings and created the clothing fashion lines Phat Farm, Argyleculture, and Tantris.

Born and raised in Queens, New York, Simmons’ father is a public school administrator and his mother a New York City park administrator. His brothers are painter Daniel Simmons, Jr., and Rev Run of Run-DMC.

The Michigan State Spartans are winners of 5 straight after dropping their opening game to the #1 ranked Duke Blue Devils. Michigan State is lead by their Sophomore forward Miles Bridges who is battling through an ankle injury. This is Michigan State’s 3 ranked opponent in their first 7 games. They beat #9 North Carolina 63-45, their defense looked impenetrable and with Bridges given a couple days to rest that ankle Michigan St is looking to show why they should be one of the best teams in the country. 

Notre Dame comes into this one undefeated on the young season after an absolute thrilling 67-66 win over the #8 Wichita St Shockers. Notre Dame returned some key players from last year including NCAA tournament stand out Bonzie Collins. Notre Dame is gonna have its hands full with The Spartans tonight regadless and It does them no favors to have to go to Michigan St, one of the top atmospheres in all of college basketball.

Michigan State is a 6 point favorite heading into this game. I fully expect them to win by double digits, the game will be close until the end where the depth and talent advantage of Michigan St. will see them come out victorious.

Alcohol culture is a little upside down these days.

Zima, the lightly carbonated alcoholic beverage introduced by the Coors Brewing Company in 1993 is back. Icing people with Smirnoff Ice is back. You can buy ‘to-go’ cups of wine.

Yet, despite all this, beer still reigns supreme, according to the latest Gallup Poll.

After collecting data from a random sample of 1,021 American adults, Gallup found that Americans who drink alcohol continue most often choose beer, with 40% choosing beer, 30% choosing wine, and 26% choosing liquor (26%).

The latest results are from a July 5-9 update of Gallup’s annual Consumption Habits poll. Gallup has found that beer is most popular among men; this year, 62% of male drinkers say they prefer beer, compared with 19% of female drinkers. Less-educated and middle-incomeAmericans also tend to choose beer.

For the past two decades, at least three in 10 drinkers have said they prefer wine, peaking at 39% in 2005. Wine was slightly less popular in the early to mid-1990s. Women are significantly more likely than men to prefer wine, at 50% vs. 11%, respectively. This beverage is also preferred more among college-educated adults.

The 26% of drinkers who name liquor as their beverage of choice is the highest in Gallup’s 25-year trend, but similar to the 24% recorded in 2004. The percentage naming liquor has typically been closer to 20%. Future measurements will help determine whether the current figure marks the beginning of a trend toward an increased preference for liquor.

With over 5,000 breweries in the United States, it seems as though beer’s longtime stranglehold on American drinking culture is going nowhere fast.

Despite what they say, it appears as though the pussification of America isn’t complete after all.

A Texas State University newspaper is under fire after they printed an opinion article, titled “Your DNA Is An Abomination,” directed towards white people. The article states that “white death will mean liberation for all” and that whiteness is “a construct used to perpetuate a system of racist power.” Therefore, to the author, if you’re white your identity is inherently linked to oppression and you hold privilege over all non-whites despite your/their socioeconomic status. And of course, this article stirred some serious controversy…

The student-run newspaper, Texas State’s University Star, has already issued an apology following severe backlash from readers online. “After reading this I’m embarrassed for my University! I would not be okay if this was written in any other context, I made many friends from different cultures,” said one embarrassed student on Twitter.

“Whiteness will be over because we want it to be,” wrote the author of the article, Texas State University senior Rudy Martinez. “And when it dies, there will be millions of cultural zombies aimlessly wandering across a vastly changed landscape.”

Martinez calls every white American “an aberration…who is a descendant of those Europeans who chose to abandon their identity in search of something ‘new’ stolen land.”

“Until then, remember this: I hate you because you shouldn’t exist,” wrote Martinez. “You are both the dominant apparatus on the planet and the void in which all other cultures, upon meeting you, die.”

In the article, Martinez writes that out of all the white people he has met in his life, he has come across “perhaps only a dozen” who he would consider “descent.”

Late Tuesday, the University Star’s Editor-in-Chief, Denise Cervantes issued a statement reflecting on “widespread criticism from readers.”

“The University Star’s opinion pages are a forum for students to express and debate ideas,” she said. “While our publication does not endorse every opinion put forth by student columnists or guest contributors, as the editor I take responsibility for what is printed on our pages.”

Cervantes suggested that the original intent of the article was to provide commentary on issues relating to race and racial identities.

“We acknowledge that the column could have been clearer in its message and that it has caused hurt within our campus community,” she said. “We apologize and hope that we can move forward to a place of productive dialogue on ways to bring our community together.” – I wonder if that also includes race-baiting and dehumanizing language, considering what was already accepted as being fit for print.

Andrew Homann, Former Texas State student body president and chief of staff at the Texas Federation of College Republicans, was one of the voices who spoke out against this column.

“Just when you think the opinion’s columns in the University Star couldn’t get any worse, they publish this masterpiece and exceed my expectations,” he wrote on a Facebook post on Tuesday. “No one is going to take this paper seriously if the editorial board continues to allow baseless garbage to be published week in and week out.”

“I expect a better response and repercussions,” said one Twitter user, in a message directed to the president of Texas State University.

Who is Rudy Martinez?

He’s a senior-level student at Texas State University who has stirred up some serious controversy with his op-ed article, “Your DNA Is An Abomination”.

Martinez is a philosophy major who thinks “white people” are an “aberration,” which means “a departure from what is normal, usual, or expected, typically one that is unwelcome,” according to Google’s dictionary.

In a past article, titled “Dane Powell is a hero,” Martinez writes that he was one of 200 people arrested on January 20, 2017, for protesting “the inauguration of proto-fascist Donald Trump.”

The Texas State University student writes that he hates white people because they “shouldn’t exist.”

“Until then, remember this: I hate you because you shouldn’t exist,” wrote Martinez. “You are both the dominant apparatus on the planet and the void in which all other cultures, upon meeting you, die.”

Martinez took to Facebook on Wednesday to write, “This just in! Texas State President Denise Trauth, best known for falling asleep during a talk given by Angela Davis, has called me a racist. Therefore, she is no longer a member of my “decent dozen”.

He wrote in a now-controversial op-ed article that, “When I think of all the white people I have ever encountered – whether they’ve been professors, peers, lovers, friends, police officers, et cetera – there is perhaps only a dozen I would consider ‘descent.'”

The student lives in San Marcos, Texas, but was originally from Hialeah, Florida. He had formerly attended Miami Dade College (from 2010 to 2013) and Marter Academy Charter High, according to his FB page.

Albuquerque Police are investigating the stabbing death of 20-year-old Dezmond Ravenel. Ravenel, a student at the University of New Mexico and a brother in the Pike Fraterntiy, was stabbed and killed at an apartment complex near San Pedro and Gibson in Albuquerque.

Police were called out to the Pearl at Spring Creek Apartments around 6 PM local time on Monday, November 27. Once officers arrived they say they found a man, Dezmond, who had been stabbed in the chest. The man was taken to UNM Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Police say that the suspect in the murder is the victim’s younger brother, 20-year-old D’Andre Ravenel.

Ravenel is now in custody and currently booked at the Metropolitan Detention Center. He was charged with an open count of murder.

A fight between two brothers left one dead Monday night when police were dispatched to a southeast Albuquerque apartment complex. When officers arrived they said D’Andre Ravenel was still at the scene and admitted to stabbing his older brother Dezmond, 22 in the chest, twice.

The 20-year-old told police his brother Dezmond “came after” him and punched him several times in the face. In the police report, detectives said D’Andre’s story was inconsistent, as he didn’t appear to have any injuries to his head or face.

On Wednesday, friends and classmates of Desmond said they were shocked and saddened to find out their friend didn’t survive.

The 22-year-old Dezmond was also a Pike Fraternity brother at the University of New Mexico. The fraternity is planning a candlelight vigil, but a date has yet to be set.

A GoFundMe has been set up by Dezmond’s family.

The Tennessee Volunteers Head Coaching job has been one of the hottest topics in college football in recent weeks. Greg Schiano was prepared to be the next HC but then Tennessee pulled their offer back after backlash from their student body and on social media. Now that the job is open again Everyone has a different guess who the next coach will be. But after what went down with Schiano candidates will be a little more hesitant before taking this job. Let’s take a look at who has the best shot of landing the head coaching gig at Tennessee.

Jon Gruden

Grumors are whipping around at record high speeds and all roads point to the Tennessee Volunteers Head coaching job. Jon Gruden’s name seems to come up every time there is an open head coaching sport open wether that is in college or the pros. This year the rumors seem stronger than ever, there has been multiple instances where Gruden has hinted at the job. Lets list off all the “coincidental” things that have happened.

1. He’s been in Knoxville Tennessee for 3 of the last 4 home games
2. He randomly brought up how much he loves the Tennessee Fight Song during a radio interview.
3. He’s had several meetings with the schools AD in Orlando FL

These are just the main contributing factors. Granted its all speculation at this point, but I can tell you one thing for sure Tennessee students sure want Gruden to lead their team next season. Despite rumors saying Gruden turned down the job I still like he is very much in the mix.

Lane Kiffin

ALL ABOARD THE LANE TRAIN!!!

Lane Kiffin once upon a time was the HC of the Tennessee Volunteers. He then quit after 2 years and went and became the HC at USC. When he left he left a bitter taste in the entire fan bases mouth. But with bad hire after bad hire they’ve had enough 1,500 students have signed a petition to try and get Lane back. Kiffin remains adamant that he will remain at FAU and continue to take that program in a positive direction. But Tennessee is a very tempting offer especially because he has all the leverage in this situation. Keep your eye on the Lane Train Rocky Top

Kevin Sumlin

Kevin Sumlin was fired from Texas A&M after a lack luster 7-5  start to this season. Sumlin enjoyed a lot of success with the Aggies and his firing came as a shock to most. Regardless Sumlin can coach and no one is gonna deny that he had a career record of 51-26 at Texas A&M who also play in the SEC. Sumlin makes a lot of sense here, he knows the conference every well, he’s had success, he’s a good recruiter, and fan bases generally like him. I’m sure he would love a chance to coach again right away.

Scott Frost

Scott Frost is one of the hottest young coaching candidates in college football. He has completely turned around UCF and has them at an astonishing 12-0 after taking down 11-1 USF last week. Frost would be a great fit for Tennessee he is a guy who is familiar with the area for recruiting, bring new energy to a team that is in desperate need of an energy boost, and best case scenario he can easily be their coach for the next 10 years. If Scott Frost is willing to leave his job at UCF and become the Volunteers new coach Tennessee would be dumb to not welcome him with open arms.

I’m not going to pretend like I think weed is the answer here.

Look, weed is tight, everyone knows this, but I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you need to be stoned to have a coherent political discussion. Anyone with a rational brain should be able to hear the other side’s point of view, but then again, rationality seems to be few and far between these days.

That said, I will concede that getting high before a discussion like this certainly takes the edge off due to the general relaxing effects of weed.

My personal highlight of the video is the Trump supporter, the former teenage mother who benefits from the Affordable Care Act, admitting she thinks he’s a shitty human being. If only all the people who support him were willing to be that honest.

Is this some sort of guerrilla marketing campaign for Better Call Saul? This entire thing looks/feels/plays like a scene out of the Breaking Bad universe.

Let’s start with what’s happening: a little girl, adorably dressed in all pink, is prancing around a tattoo parlor lobby in Chandler, Arizona, while one of her parents presumably either gets or gives a tattoo. As a child does, the girl just seems to be bopping along in her own world, when suddenly, a hail of bullets whiz past her head.

Miraculously, she was not hit. I don’t know about you, but this seems like an early Heisenberg scheme gone wrong to me.

And if that isn’t Breaking Bad enough for you, just check out the mugshots of the arrested suspects. They just look like they’d be boys with Jesse Pinkman. Hell, the dude with the tattoos looks like the heroin-version of Skinny Pete.

23-year-old Michael David Hart arrived at the Damaged Ink Tattoo located at 590 N. Alma School Rd. with 21-year-old Rafael Santos and a third unidentified Hispanic male, for a tattoo.  Around 11:00 A.M., a verbal dispute broke out between Hart, Santos, the unidentified male, and the tattoo artist.  Hart was asked to leave the parlor and return at a later time.

After leaving the tattoo parlor, Hart, Santos, and the unidentified male entered a vehicle.  As this vehicle began to drive away, Hart allegedly fired at least three rounds from a firearm, in the direction of Damaged Ink Tattoo.  Instead of striking the tattoo parlor, the rounds struck the Paisanos Barber Shop located next door.  Two of the rounds struck the front window of the barber shop, narrowly missing a four-year-old girl who was watching television

Hart was taken into custody at a residence in Mesa.  Santos was arrested a short time later at a different location.

Both Hart and Santos were booked into the Maricopa County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and endangerment.

Campbell’s

More than halfway through the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers sit amongst the top of the NFL’s elite having lost only two games this season. COED got the chance to sit down with All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown to talk football, Campbell’s soup, touchdown dances, and business (which is boomin’).

Antonio, along with Luke Kuechly and Dak Prescott, currently stars in a new series of Campbell’s soup ads where he fills in so you can fill up. The spot features AB taking a man’s spot on move-in day so that he can eat some soup. Brown hinted that new versions are coming soon with both him and Luke.

The commercials might be entertaining but the show hasn’t stopped there for Antonio this season. Already with over 1,000 yards on the season, Antonio put on an iconic performance Thursday against the Titans reeling in over 140 yards and 3 touchdowns. Multiple players have taken stances against Thursday Night games, the criticisms focus on lack of rest for the players and the league being overly greedy. AB praised coach Tomlin saying, “not going full speed, not having that hammer thrown. It keeps you fresh” highlighting him as a major reason for his success.

This year, not only are the Steelers winning, but they’re having a blast while doing it. Le’Veon Bell and rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster captured national spotlight multiple times this year with hilarious celebrations including hide and seek, an elaborate bench press, and throwing dice.

Antonio hasn’t gotten in on the fun as much this season (remember him twerking last year in the end zone?), but don’t worry, because he promised COED that he has some dances he’s waiting to bust out. Just in case he gets cold on the sideline we collaborated on making a Campbell’s soup touchdown celebration, a fill up while he fills up the statline.

Off the field and outside of the kitchen, AB told us he watches a lot of YouTube videos which inspired his next project. Boomin Productions, Antonio’s company, is in the process of creating informational videos for the next generation of football players. In this series in the making Antonio teaches you how to read a defense, the proper way to run routes, and all the nuances that go into leading the league in receiving yards (again).

Antonio Brown, always the professional and a charismatic person, just keeps doing his thing. Torturing defenses, loving the game he plays, and whatever he wants in between. Keep an eye out for Brown’s Campbell’s Maxx Soup (AB’s favorite is the bison), his company’s videos, and especially Brown for the rest of the season.

Ever been triggered by the word “freshman”? Does it sound like an outdated label harkening back to a culture of intense male supremacy? Or do you just think of your first year of college when you hear that word? Either way, Trinity College Dublin has decided to play it safe and crack away at the patriarchy brick-by-brick, eliminating the word “freshman” from their normative collegiate vocabulary for good.

Instead of “freshman,” first-year students will be referred to as “fresh.” Trinity College Dublin wants to remove the visible gender distinction attached to collegiate vocabulary relating to first-year students. Afterall, there aren’t any freshwomen courses in college (unless you count gender studies), but every first-year course is referred to as “freshmen level.” The term “freshman” is then seen as a word that further marginalizes women and upholds a notion of male supremacy within academia.

Trinity College Dublin’s Vice President Chris Morash recently sent out an e-mail to their students and staff, informing them of this recent name change. From now on, all first-year students will be referred to as “fresh” rather than the traditional “freshman” terminology. He said, “[this] small but important change will ensure that all Trinity students are equally included by the language used to describe them”.

The move reflects an effort made by the college towards promoting an environment of gender inclusivity while dismantling structures that contradict with gender equality.

His 2010 debut album All I Want Is You didn’t sell well initially but was able to rack up at least $1 million worth of sales over the years. His 2012 album, Kaleidoscope Dream, also sold quite welling as the record amounted in $860 thousand worth of sales. His single “Sure Thing” alone earned Miguel $1.425 million in sales. Similarly, the single “Girls Like You” made $1.85 million.

Early Beginnings

His full name is Miguel Jontel Pimentel. He was born on October 23, 1985, in San Pedro, Los Angeles. By ninth grade, Miguel was already signed to a production deal with Drop Squad. In 2006, he was supposed to receive his big break, as his music video “Getcha Hands Up” debuted on BET’s 106 & Park. But Miguel wasn’t feeling the gangsta look and walked away from his deal with Black Ice Records. He described the experience in a 2012 interview with LA Weekly, “We shot a video, and if you ever see it, you will laugh your ass off. I have a fitted hat on and a white T-shirt and baggy jeans. I was 19 years old and it was the first time anyone had ever given me money.”

Miguel released his debut album All I Want Is You in November 2010. At first, the album performed poorly but then began to turn around for the better after the release of two singles, “Sure Thing” and “Quickie.” The album spent 45 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and ended up making $1 million in sales revenue.

2012 – 2013

Miguel dropped his second studio album on October 2, 2012. Kaleidoscope Dream was released to critical acclaim and major financial success, reaching the number 3 spot on the Billboard 200 in the first week while selling a total of 71,000 copies. “Adorn” was the album’s lead single, reaching the number one spot of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and becoming his highest charted single on the Billboard 200 (as his song reached number 17 on the chart).

The rising star was featured in Mariah Carey’s 2013 single #Beautiful, which became Miguel’s third record that made at least $1 million in sales.

The 32-year-old musician has also faced his fair share of controversy. At the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, the artist attempted to leap across the stage but ended up injuring two audience members. At the time, he was performing his hit song “Adorn” as he made a leap of faith, which harmed two women as his right leg hooked over one, slamming her into the stage. This moment is known as the “Miguel Leg Drop” and has inspired many memes and GIFs…

2014 – Present

In December 2014, Miguel introduced the world to NWA.HollywoodDreams.Coffee, a 3-track EP that was used to promote his third studio album, which was released on June 30, 2015. His album Wildheart also received major critical acclaim and ended 2015 as Time‘s album of the year. The album also earned Miguel two Grammy nominations, including Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Miguel is set to release his fourth studio album, War & Leisure, on Friday, December 1, 2017.

Before the Summer showdown in Moscow, 32 teams will head to the State Kremlin Palace to divide up the 32 qualified teams into eight four-team groups (from Group A to Group H). The draw for the 2018 World Cup is set for Friday morning, as 32 of the best teams find out which group they fall into.

All 32 teams are already divided up among four pots based on the October 2017 World Cup rankings. The teams in these pots will be drawn into groups by Friday morning.

Pot 1 is occupied by the seven-highest ranking teams plus Russia who acts as the host for the event. The Pot 1 teams include Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland, France, and Russia (host). Pot 2 is made up of the next eight highest ranking teams. Pot 2 has Spain, Peru, Switzerland, England, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Croatia. Pot 3 has Denmark, Iceland, Costa Rica, Sweden, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, and Iran. Lastly, Pot 4 has Serbia, Nigeria, Australia, Japan, Morocco, Panama, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia.

These Pots were be divided as each country is placed in eight four-team groups. Each group will play at least three games, with the two top countries from each group advancing to round 2. The World Cup tournament will run from June 14 to July 15 in Russia.

As a BIG comic book guy, I can confidently say that Wonder Woman was the best comic book film I’ve seen for some time. Don’t believe me? Let this GIF do the talking then:

Anyway, Wonder Woman was everything that superhero movies are supposed to be: kick-ass, funny, and full of heart. And while the script was tight and the action scenes on point, we can’t help but feel like most of the credit needs to be given to Gal Gadot, who turned in an intoxicating performance as Diana Prince.

Whether it be her adorable cluelessness towards the human world or her fierceness in battle, Gadot gave us the Wonder Woman the DCEU doesn’t deserve, but needs right now.
