New York City is known far and wide as the city that never sleeps, and for good reason. No matter the time of day you’re guaranteed to see some version of the city’s bustle. Be it the 6pm’s midtown traffic or the quieter ambiance of a mostly-empty-but-not-quite subway car at 3am. Becoming the city that’s always up and always going doesn’t come easily- or without a considerable amount of coffee to make it so. While not as caffeinated as cities like Seattle or San Francisco, New York still has a thirsty love of coffee.

The New York City Coffee Festival is a jubilant celebration of that love. A gathering of nearly 100 different vendors, mostly from the coffee industry, the NYC Coffee Festival is a vibrant demonstration of New Yorkers’ distinct love for all things coffee. The New York Coffee Festival is happening this weekend, from Friday 10/13 to Sunday 10/15 at the Metropolitan Pavilion on West 18th street in Manhattan.

About the NYC Coffee Festival

Created by the same people who established the Craft Coffee Festival, which highlights the growing independent coffee roaster scene in New York, The New York City Coffee Festival is a larger and more encompassing event for roasters across the city as well as experienced industry professionals and other sponsors. Now in its third year, the festival is expected to draw a crowd of roughly 12,000 coffee lovers, baristas, shop owners, and others for a weekend of boundless coffee sampling, educational workshopping, and industry networking.

According to the website, The New York Coffee Festival is also the kickoff event of the charitable Coffee Week NYC, which aims to promote the spirit of coffee while also raising funds for clean water and sanitation projects in coffee-producing communities all over the world.

What to Do

First and foremost, drink all the coffee you can muster. Unlimited coffee tastings from some of the finest local coffee shops and more are nothing to sneeze at. Beyond just coffee drinking, though, the festival offers food, live music, educational workshops from experienced industry professionals, and live latte art.

As the festival will draw over 85 coffee, food, and equipment suppliers it is a great networking opportunity for anyone in the industry or thinking about joining it as well as regular coffee lovers. You can connect with local roasters and artisanal coffeemakers from here in NYC while sampling unlimited coffee and take in lessons from experienced members of the industry.

Notable participants in the festival this year include; Gotham Coffee Roasters, a Brooklyn-based coffee company with an espresso bar in Chelsea, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, the Portland-based dynamo of the coffee industry in America, and Coffee of Grace, the coffee company established by Robert De Niro’s wife Grace Hightower De Niro in cooperation with Rwandan coffee farmers.

In addition to the vendors and samplings, there will be a demonstration of Coffee Masters, a competition between 16 baristas to demonstrate their unique coffeemaking skills. Through 7 challenges the baristas have to prove their skills, timing, and presentation. Challenges include “Signature Drinks” and “Latte Art”.

Coffee for Charity

The entirety of the proceeds from the weekend’s Coffee Festival will be donated to Project Waterfall, an organization that aims to deliver safe drinking water and sanitation projects for up to 100,000 people, specifically in coffee-producing countries in Africa. In addition to Project Waterfall, the festival supports Charity: Water, another nonprofit organization that seeks to bring water and sustainable water delivery systems to communities all over the world.

Last year, the New York Coffee Festival raised more than $75,000 for Project Waterfall through ticket sales and on-site fundraising. With the projected attendance of the festival this year, that number could potentially climb to $85 or $90 thousand.

Abbi Jacobson is a comedian, writer, actor, illustrator, and star of Comedy Central’s critically-acclaimed series Broad City. Jacobson met her co-star Ilana Glazer while attending classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York City. Broad City developed on stage and on the web, earning the duo a cult-like status online and positioning them to become future TV stars.

From 2009 to 2011, the internet was treated to the Broad City web-series. Glazer and Jacobson’s show quickly gained traction, receiving positive reviews and major attention from media outlets such as Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal.

Comedian Amy Poehler caught wind of the comedic duo and helped them shop around their idea of a Broad City pilot episode for television. In 2011, FX picked up the series. However, they didn’t approve the script and ended up selling over the show’s rights to Comedy Central. The show debuted in January 2014, receiving positive reviews and excellent ratings. Broad City was Comedy Central’s highest-rated first season since 2012, with an average of 1.2 million viewers.

Swim Across America, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for cancer research using swimming events, has just gotten a $3 million charitable contribution from the Merck & Co. pharmaceutical company, also known as MSD outside the United States and Canada.

‘The Swim Across America mission is a testimony to the human spirit of coming together’

“Every 15 minutes, 50 Americans are diagnosed with cancer,” said Rob Butcher, CEO of Swim Across America, according to Business Wire, adding that, “The good news is that there is hope for more Americans to become survivors than ever before, and Swim Across America’s commitment to finding new cures and treatments has been an important catalyst for that progress.”

“We are going to apply Merck’s contribution to better support our existing benefit swims and add new ones with a goal of funding $100 million into cancer research and clinical trials in the next decade.”

In additional support, Merck will also try to establish their own sponsored teams at the organization’s benefit swim events. In fact, Merck will start with the first 2018 Swim Across America event hosted in Tampa, Florida.

As Jill DeSimone, senior vice president of Merck, said in a statement, “Merck is committed to advancing research and to giving more families hope in the fight against cancer, and we know that that progress can only come from many people and organizations doing their part.”

“Swim Across America has created a program that has inspired thousands of Americans, including many Merck employees, to participate in their benefit swims with the proceeds funding cancer research and clinical trials. We know this contribution will help them do even more to fight cancer.”

Craig Beardsley, a 1980 Olympian and Swim Across America supporter, commented that, “I was at our first swim when we raised $5,000.”

“The Swim Across America mission is a testimony to the human spirit of coming together to try to solve a problem that has affected nearly everyone. Merck’s contribution is going to allow us to speed up our ability to add more swims so we can fund even more research projects.”

I believe that the fact that we don’t know for certain bodes well for the fate of the Wildling leader, as a character of his status would almost certainly be killed unequivocally. And it appears that my beliefs would be true, as the actor who plays Tormund, Kristofer Hivju, was spotted in Belfast along with the rest of the Game Of Thrones cast (such as Dany and Samwell Tarly), where they just began production.

Police are responding to yet another active shooting situation in the Sunshine State of Florida. Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has responded by closing down part of State Road 52 near Meadow Drive in Hudson after receiving reports of an active shooter situation inside a home in Gulf Highlands subdivision within Pasco County.

The suspect was reportedly killed by police during a standoff in the Gulf Highlands subdivision.

As a result of the shooting, Gulf Highlands Elementary School in Port Richey has been placed on lockdown.

A reverse 911 call has been issued to residents of the area. The police has also warned the public to stay away from the area until this active shooting situation is neutralized.

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office released the following reunification plan for parents and students at Gulf Highlands Elementary School:

*Car rider student reunification point is at Longbranch Dr and Harvest Moon Circle. We want parents to turn off 52 at Lamadera and go west on long branch until they reach their re unification point. School staff and law enforcement will be requiring identification of parents and guardians to release students.
Car riders are released first and bus riders after.
*Parents of bus riders need to stay at their bus stops as buses will be taking students to their stops. Please patient as we are releasing students late.

After several months of regular season baseball, postseason baseball is upon us, continuing today with game 5 of the NLDS between the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals.  Both teams won their respective divisions and have the talent to make a deep postseason run in 2017.

The series is tied after Nationals won game 4 behind a dominant effort from Stephen Strasburg, who earned his first career postseason win.

On the mound for the Chicago Cubs tonight in Chicago is Kyle Hendricks. Hendricks went toe-to-toe with Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg last Friday in Game 1, earning a win while allowing two hits and striking out six over seven scoreless innings.

As for the Nationals, their starting pitcher has yet to be announced. The Nationals have yet to name a starter for Game 5 with the options likely to be either lefty Gio Gonzalez or righty Tanner Roark. Washington skipper Dusty Baker is expected to announce his decision a few hours before first pitch.

Just who is on the list?

10. Jaylen Adams, St. Bonaventure

2016-17 Stats: 20.6 PPG, 6.5 APG, 3.7 RPG, 2.1 SPG, 35.6 3P%

For starters, a St. Bonaventure senior making it on the national list already makes Adams a threat. If anything is in his corner, he played all 40 minutes 25 times in the past two seasons, or 549 minutes on the floor, so you know he has experience.

9. Gary Clark, Cincinnati

2016-17 Stats: 10.8 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 2.1 APG, 1.2 BPG, 1.0 SPG

Clark’s biggest card to play is win shares, and he is one of six players over the past three seasons to make at least 15.9 win shares.

8. Jock Landale, Saint Mary’s

2016-17 Stats: 16.9 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 1.7 APG, 1.2 BPG

As Sports Illustrated explains, “Landale was the focal point of opponents’ game plans in 2016-17. That will continue in 2017-18…Landale should be able to dominate inside in WCC play during his senior season.”

7. Angel Delgado, Seton Hall

2016-17 Stats: 15.2 PPG, 13.1 RPG, 2.2 APG

Delgado had been a threat back when he was a freshman, when he averaged 13.2 points and 14.0 rebounds per 40 minutes. Hopefully, he’s also aged well now that he’s become a senior.

6. Trevon Bluiett, Xavier

2016-17 Stats: 18.5 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 2.1 APG, 37.1% 3PT

Back in September, SB Nation wrote, “The star is, without question, Bluiett. The senior flirted with the NBA after a season in which he averaged 18.5 points per game (37 percent from three) and 20.5 points during the postseason.”

5. Jevon Carter, West Virginia

2016-17 Stats: 13.5 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 3.7 APG, 2.5 SPG, 38.9% 3PT

With Carter being labelled “the unofficial captain of this group of seniors,” the original listed even credited him directly with West Virginia’s growth as a team.

4. Joel Berry II, North Carolina

2016-17 Stats: 14.7 PPG, 3.6 APG, 3.1 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 38.3% 3PT

Berry already made himself a rarity when he was nmaed the NCAA tournament’s most outstanding player and returned for another season, following Joakim Noah in 2006, Kyle Singler in 2010 and Luke Hancock in 2013.

3. Bonzie Colson, Notre Dame

2016-17 Stats: 17.8 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.6 APG, 1.4 BPG, 1.1 SPG, 43.3% 3PT

With Colson’s three-pointers, 46.1% came in the final 22.2% of Notre Dame’s season. To put it into context, he already proving that he was just warming himself up!

2. Devonte’ Graham, Kansas

2016-17 Stats: 13.4 PPG, 4.1 APG, 3.1 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 38.8% 3PT

Graham managed to make high numbers in spite of a rather low usage. Some of the other names on this list have experience on their side, this might be Graham’s time to shine.

2016-17 Stats: 14.5 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 3.5 APG, 36.5% 3PT

The original list puts it best, “Hate on the guy all that you want, but there is not a more noteworthy senior in college basketball. Frankly, it’s hard to remember the last time there was one.”

Sturm’s special talent is sure to entertain any barfly he comes across. Here’s a look at his record-breaking feat. The dude carries a sh*t-load of beer and leaves the event with his name officially in the record books…

Here’s the rules for this Guinness World Record: The participant must cross the finish line with at least 90% of the beer that he/she started with. This allows for the contestant to spill up to 10% of liquid. I imagine it’s near impossible not to get a little wet when carrying that much beer across such a lengthy distance (which is over 131 feet long). Sturm passed all requirements and earned himself a world record.

Before Sturm set the Guinness World Record for most beer steins, he attempted to go with 28 beer steins. Sturm ended dropping a beer, which shattered glass everywhere, and ended up cutting his knee. He slapped a bandage on that bad-boy, and tried again with 26 steins. Sturm’s second attempt proved successful.

More than two dozens women have came forward with allegations against Weinstein, ranging from sexual assault, harassment, and rape.

Back in 2013, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane cracked a joke about Weinstein’s sexual nature, allegedly targeting mostly Hollywood actresses for various sexual favors. In the video, MacFarlane introduces the nominees for Best Supporting Actress at the 85 annual Academy Awards. After the intro, he says, “Congratulations, you five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein.

Even Hillary “Hilldog” Clinton has something to say about Harvey’s allegations. She said that she had no idea about his alleged behavior/actions. She once considered him “a friend” and claims that news about Weinstein made her “sick.” Weinstein supported Hillary’s run for president in 2008 and 2016. He donated $46,350 to the Clinton Foundation in 2016. Hillary has promised that she will donate all the Weinstein-related contributions to charity.

In 2017, Barth was one of many women to come forward with allegations of sexual harassment against Harvey Weinstein. Some woman have also accused Weinstein of sexual assault and rape. She alleges that Weinstein changed the conversation from offering to cast her in a role to “demanding a naked massage in bad.”

Seth MacFarlane said that Barth told him, in 2011, about her encounter with Weinstein. Two years later, MacFarlane hinted at Weinstein’s alleged sexual behavior at the 2013 Academy Awards.

“In 2011, my friend and colleague Jessica Barth, with whom I worked on the Ted films, confided in me regarding her encounter with Harvey Weinstein and his attempted advances,” MacFarlane wrote on Twitter on Wednesday, October 11. “She has since courageously come forward to speak out. Ashley Judd is an award-winning actress, who has appeared on film for well over two decades. The 49-year-old star has landed lead roles in films such as Double Jeopardy, Dolphin Tale, Bug, Divergent, High Crimes, and much more. In October 2017, Judd claims that Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed her on the set of the 1997 film Kiss the Girls. She is only over a dozen women, mostly Hollywood actresses, who has came forward with accusations of sexual harassment or assault against longtime film producer Harvey Weinstein.

The actress first appeared on two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1991, titled “Darmok” and “The Game”.

One of Ashley Judd’s first films was a 1993 critically-acclaimed independent film called Ruby in Paradise. Judd played the lead role of Ruby, which earned the young actress two awards: one Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Most Promising Actress, and one Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Female.

Armstrong Renata, 23, has been sentenced for the death of Cole Miller. Renata has pled guilty to the charge of unlawful striking causing death. He was sentenced to seven years in prison as a result of the attack.

In January 2016, Renata punched Mr. Miller in the back of the head in the back of the head, causing the teenager to lose balance, fall, and hit his head on the pavement. Before the attack, Miller walked through a mall with his friend and was trying to catch a taxi cab to go home.

Miller was a former Brisbane State High School student. He received severe head injuries and massive brain damage as a result of the attack. One day after the incident, the once-promising water polo athlete was taken off of life support and pronounced dead.

Shortly after Miller’s death, thousands of people joined together in a vigil and rally in King George Square to show support for the victim and the family of the decease, as well as condemning and calling an end to violent behavior.

Renata’s co-accused Daniel Maxwell allegedly started the fight after the duo was kicked out of a venue. He was given 18-month service for assault and was later deported back to New Zealand.

Both the families of Renata and Miller were in the courtroom during Thursday’s sentencing.

Renata will be forced to serve at least 80 percent of his sentence, and may be eligible for parole in four years (considering time already served). He is only the second person to be sentenced under Queensland’s one-punch laws.

According to statements from Prosecutor David Meredith, the victim (Cole Miller) and his friend Nick Pace weren’t the instigators of the confrontation and made no contact with either Renata or Maxwell until the fatal incident.

Maxwell was allegedly drunk that night, and was said to have picked fights with at least three individuals, before the two groups ever crossed during that fatal encounter in the Chinatown mall.

Maxwell allegedly wanted to fight Mr. Miller, and is said to have punched him in the chest, after initially aiming for the victim’s jaw. Miller didn’t retaliate and indicated that he wanted no part in a fight.

After Miller and Pace attempted to retreat, Renata admittedly punched Miller in the back of the head, while the victim was facing away with his hands at his sides.

“Renata moved around behind Cole Miller and then punched him in the side of the head,” said Mr Meredith. “Miller would not have seen the attack coming. The blow was of such force … it, as well as contact with ground … [meant] injury was unsurvivable.”

Pace attempted to revive his knocked out friend and called an ambulance.

According to Defense attorney Angus Edwards, his client feels “genuine remorse” for any and all wrongdoings relating to Miller’s death.

Edwards said, “He perceived, wrongly … that Mr Miller was going to hit his friend so he struck first.”

Osa Masina, a suspended University of Southern California football player accused of sexual assault in Utah, pled guilty to misdemeanor charges in a deal with prosecutors.

According to reports, the plea agreement carries no possible state prison time for 20-year-old Masina. However, he could be sentenced to three years in county jail and probation. Prosecutor Donna Kelly said that prosecutors have yet to decide what sentence they’ll seek at a hearing in December. Masina won’t be forced to register as a sex offender.

Defense attorney Greg Skordas said the plea deal gives his Masina a chance to “pick up the pieces at some point.”

Bethany Warr, the attorney for the victim, said the guilty pleas to three counts of sexual battery are “grossly disproportionate” for what she called a violent sexual assault.

The agreement was the best prosecutors could do after Judge Keith Kelly excluded key evidence, she said.

“Their case has been gutted, essentially,” she said.

The case is among a series of sex abuse prosecutions across the country involving collegiate athletes that have brought calls for stronger protections by universities and justice systems for women. Masina was a standout player at Brighton High School outside Salt Lake City, and a sophomore linebacker for USC when he was suspended.

He declined to comment after the hearing. Skordas said he’s not expecting Masina to return to USC’s team after the case is finished but hopes he can continue his education. A lawyer for the Masina family, Gregory Phillips, blasted the decision to file charges in the case, saying Thursday there had been a “rush to judgment” against a high-profile athlete.

Prosecutors in Los Angeles declined to file charges after authorities investigated allegations that Masina and a USC teammate assaulted the same woman in California days earlier.

Prosecutors said it would be difficult to prove the woman was too intoxicated to consent.

Police at the University of Maryland are investigating three hate-related reports of graffiti inside a men’s restroom stall.

According to police, offensive language or drawings scrawled in black marker were found in a men’s restroom stall in the Ellicott Dining Hall between September 28 and October 9.

The first report was on September 28, the second shortly before on October 7, and the third on October 9. The October 7 report was about an offensive phrase and a swastika.

Police are offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to an identification of the person responsible.

Campus police at College Park have served a criminal summons to one individual accused of malicious distribution of property. This person has been served with a denial of access to campus and is no longer an employee of the university, college officials said.

“Diversity and inclusion are core values of our institution, and these values will and must be upheld. We are currently leading forward a campus-wide action plan to combat hate and create a safer campus for all,” a statement from the university said.

At UMBC’s Catonsville campus, authorities are also investigating swastikas being drawn on or carved into surfaces in restrooms, classrooms and residential buildings.

Reports of such incidents began over the summer and have continued through the semester, police said in a crime alert.

Every quarterback needs a security blanket. From speedy wideouts to physically formidable tight ends, there are a plethora of options that signal callers favor depending on their preference. However, the common theme amongst these reliable pass catchers is their ability to hold onto the ball when it’s thrown their way while being able to convert those receptions into either massive amounts of yardage or touchdowns. For rookie quarterbacks, it is paramount for them to have at least one receiver who they can rely on to bail them out of sticky situations. While tight end Zach Miller was not a go-to target for former Chicago Bears starter Mike Glennon, his presence was essential in helping Mitchell Trubisky find success in his professional debut against the Minnesota Vikings.

In terms of opportunity statistics, Miller has quietly posted some of the more consisted numbers for a tight end in terms of targets (27, 11th amongst tight ends) and overall target shares (16.4%, 14th amongst tight ends). Combined with his contested catch rate of 20% (8th amongst tight ends), Miller is actually one of the more steady tight ends in the league. However, Miller’s grit and toughness are often overshadowed by his lack of flash, which is due in part to him running only 1.9 yards per pass route (39th amongst tight ends).

Still, the fact remains that the Bears are devoid of reliable playmakers, which is evident when you consider that Miller receives 33.3% of his teams end zone target shares (4th amongst tight ends). So, While Miller may never garner the big receiving yards of the top-notch prolific tight ends, his targets in the end zone will allow him more opportunities to score. It may not always be pretty, but Miller has the hands and toughness to make contested catches in the area of the field that matters the most.

In the end, Miller is an intriguing bench player that could definitely fill in for one of your tight ends that is either injured or off on a bye week. While he’ll never have a high ceiling scoring wise, his presence in the offense combined with his end zone targets makes him fairly valuable in certain matchups. Although Miller may never be a consistent starter even with Trubisky relying on him heavily, he can definitely score enough points as a stand-in should you need him.

On a team that is loaded with receiving talent like the Pittsburgh Steelers, it can be difficult for tenacious rookies to get the ample playing time they desire. Often times, talented rookies have to take advantage of the few opportunities they get whether they come from playing in the place of a sidelined veteran or simply converting the two or three targets they get per game into big plays. Even then, it takes many weeks of established consistency for these rookie wideouts to earn the trust of their respective quarterbacks, which is a unique rapport that takes time to develop. Although rookie receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is still working on strengthening this connection with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, his steady improvement each week in the Steelers offense is certainly worth keeping an eye on for fantasy owners that lack receiver depth.

Out of the 20 targets that have come his way, Smith-Schuster has only dropped one of them, which when you consider that the rookie wideout operates primarily in the slot and is heavily targeted in the red zone (28% target share in the red zone, 22nd amongst receivers) is particularly impressive. Despite only a 9.1% end zone target share (96th amongst receivers), Smith-Schuster has scored two touchdowns on the season, which suggests that his impressive speed has been the main reason for the rookie being a viable scorer.

Although Smith-Schuster has not garnered the total target shares that he would like (10.3% total target share, 99th amongst receivers) his presence on the field for his teams pass plays (on the field for 41 pass plays per game, 7th amongst receivers) indicates that the first-year wideout has earned ample playing time but hs still working on finding his moments to be a trusted target for Roethlisberger. Considering how many mouths the Steelers offense has to feed when it comes to passing the football, this disparity is relatively normal and will ultimately become more balanced assuming Smith-Schuster can continue to be a mainstay on the field.

While Smith-Schuster is still developing, his potential and heavy participation in pass plays seem to favor a progressively increasing trajectory in terms of success. While he may not have the big-play ability now, his red zone numbers and speed will give him plenty of opportunities to score touchdowns, making him an intriguing flex play week-to-week.

Tiffany Cordes, a 27-year-old former Ohio high school teacher, faces up to a year-and-a-half in prison after she admitted to having a sexual relationship with a student.

Cordes, 27, pleaded guilty on Thursday, October 12, to a count of sexual imposition, which is defined as “the touching of another person’s erogenous area” under Ohio state law.

After school administrators became aware of the charges, she was fired and banned from school property. Cordes was fired from her job as a teacher at Union Local High School in Belmont County, Ohio.

Cordes’s relationship with the 18-year-old boy after the mother of the victim caught him texting with the teacher and contacted police. The boy told investigators that Cordes admitted to him that she had “hooked up” with another student.

Reports state that the incident took place after the student helped her haul prom supplies in his pickup truck

Sentencing is set for 9 AM on October 27, and if convicted, Cordes could face a maximum punishment of up to 18 months in prison.

Furthermore, as part of her guilty plea, she is required to register with authorities as a sex offender.
