Wow. Now THIS is something we can get behind.

Based on what we’ve seen from Warner Bros. recently I’ve been incredibly worried about the prospect of a solo Joker movie that reeks of a quick cash grab move. Sure, the prospect of Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese being involved in some capacity seems promising, but at the end of the day, WB has done absolutely nothing over the last few years to give us any reason to have faith in a Joker-based project.

Until now.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, WB “will make an ambitious attempt to use Scorsese to bring Leonardo DiCaprio into the world of comic-book movies.”

Certainly, Scorsese’s involvement in The Joker film, which The Hangover filmmaker Todd Phillips would direct, could elevate and diversify the studio’s contributions to the genre, creating the potential to make awards-worthy films such as Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. There’s no offer for DiCaprio, and sources say Scorsese’s deal to produce isn’t even done yet. The chances of landing DiCaprio could be slim to none. But the attempt in itself sends a signal to talent that Warners wants to hire serious filmmakers to make serious films.

This plan was not met with applause in all quarters: Insiders say Jared Leto, the actor who portrayed the Clown Prince of Crime in last summer’s Suicide Squad and is slated to reprise the character not just for a sequel but for another spinoff movie (with DC villainess Harley Quinn), was caught off-guard by the plans. Leto is said to have made his displeasure with the notion of multiple Jokers known to his CAA agents, and rival agency WME has been using the concern to court him.

Warner Bros. launched its DC Extended Universe to compete with Marvel Studios with 2013’s Man of Steel. The movies have included the poorly reviewed Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad as well as this summer’s well-received Wonder Woman, which was seen as finally correcting a wobbly series. The movies have a through-line not just of stories but also actors, making them part of a superhero universe.

While Leo’s involvement in a comic book property is certainly a long shot, the rumor alone is enough to peak some newfound interest.

Although the role of the traditional running back has been noticeably diminished recently, athletes at the position have expanded their unique skill sets to become more versatile in quarterback driven offenses. While there are still plenty of purist rushers who pride themselves on carrying the rock and busting through stout defensive lines, when it comes to fantasy football, the most coveted running backs are efficient as both runners and pass catchers. As a result, exceptional running backs have elevated their value on both the field and in fantasy football as vital contributors to their respective teams.

In terms of deciding where to select a running back in your draft, you should take comfort in the fact that you do not have to be hasty to acquire an elite rusher. While there are certainly prospects that are certainly worth taking with a #1 pick, the immense depth at the position gives you the liberty to be more selective in how you pick a running back that perfectly fits the overall make up of your fantasy squad.

10. Isaiah Crowell, Cleveland Browns

Okay, so you’re probably asking yourself this obvious question: how can any player on the Cleveland Browns be considered a top-10 fantasy prospect? While this is a fair inquiry, a closer look at Isaiah Crowell’s sneaky impressive output will certainly alter your understandable albeit short-sighted assumption. Rushing for 4.8 yards per carry in 2016, Crowell proved to be one of the more efficient rushers in the league last year. His elusiveness allowed him to gain 3.3 yards before contact, which was essential to Crowell’s success considering he is not the best at absorbing contact. While Crowell may not be your first choice at the position, he definitely has one of higher floors as a reliable running back.

9. Leonard Fournette, Jacksonville Jaguars

For anyone that followed the 2017 NFL Draft, it was readily apparent that there were several franchise running backs to be had within the first couple of rounds. However, Fournette was the first to be selected at the position and considering what he did while attending LSU there is every reason to expect Fournette to be just as dominant in the NFL. At six feet and weighing in 240 pounds, Fournette is a monstrous rusher that accelerates quickly out of the backfield while using his immense size to bulldoze over opposing defenders. While Fournette struggles as a pass catcher for now, he will get an extremely high volume of carries considering how poor the quarterback play is in Jacksonville.

8. Jordan Howard, Chicago Bears

At the beginning of last year, Jordan Howard was a relatively unknown rookie running back who opened the season third on the Bears depth chart at the position. One year later, Howard is now the bears featured back and will look build off his impressive rookie campaign where he garnered 5.2 rushing yards per carry. As a receiver, Howard was effective in terms of yards after the catch (2.2), but struggled mightily when it came to keeping his hands on the ball consistently (position-high eight drops). Still, Howard will get plenty of opportunities to be the Bears go-to offensive work horse as Chicago’s quarterback situation is dicey at best.

7. DeMarco Murray, Tennessee Titans

After a debacle of a season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015, Demarco Murray got a new lease on life last season as the featured back for the Titans. His versatility as both a decisive runner (4.4 yards per carry, nine rushing touchdowns) and trusted receiver (377 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns) has allowed him to become one of the most trusted running backs in fantasy football. While there is some concern that Murray could see his role slightly reduced as second year back Derrick Henry continues to develop, the 29 year-old rusher should continue to confidently stave off Henry’s ascension in the Titans offense this season.

6. Jay Ajayi, Miami Dolphins

Similar to Jordan Howard, Jay Ajayi started out the season with a massive chip on his shoulder after he lost the starting rushing job to Arian Foster. After Foster’s season-ending injury and eventual retirement, Ajayi exploded on to the scene as a fierce runner who effectively utilized his physicality to gain extra yardage (2.5 yards after contact, fifth at the position). While some will point to Ajayi’s three game stretch where he had consecutive 200 rushing yard showings as a sign of potential regression this year, his intimidating toughness and persistence to fight for every valuable yard cannot be taught and will definitely be one of the many reasons why the second year rusher will be just as effective in 2017.

5. Melvin Gordon, Los Angeles Chargers

One of the most dangerous red-zone threats last year, Melvin Gordon was a scoring machine as he racked up 12 total touchdowns during a resurgent 2016 campaign. Despite being below average when it came to yards per carry (3.9), his ability to garner two extra yards after contact per carry allowed him to make up somewhat for this particular drawback. His effectiveness as a receiver elevated Gordon’s worth in fantasy to elite heights and will undoubtedly become a much more prominent part of his game in 2017.

4. LeSean McCoy, Buffalo Bills

If you’re looking for one of the most dynamic running backs in the league, it’s hard to ignore McCoy’s coveted output as a high-scoring fantasy weapon. Rushing for 5.4 yards per carry, McCoy proved to be one of the most elusive backs in the league last year and took his abilities to the next level as he became a trusted receiver coming out of the backfield(caught 91% of passes thrown his way). Considering McCoy posted a top-10 fantasy week during 53% of his 15 outings, his elevated projected floor will allow him to be one of the best rushers in the league even if he gets less carries under a head coach that is not Rex Ryan.

3. Devonta Freeman, Atlanta Falcons

Despite accruing 52 less touches, Devonta Freeman produced only 32 less fantasy points in 2016. His 4.8 yards per carry is impressive by itself, but when you combine it with 3.2 yards before contact it becomes clear that Freeman is in an ideal situation in Atlanta where he is the beneficiary of terrific run blocking. On top of that, Freeman was a top-5 rusher and receiving running back last year, which will allow him to accumulate points in a plethora of ways this season. While the presence of running back Tevin Coleman could detract slightly from some of Freeman’s potential contributions, it’s abundantly clear that Freeman will continue to be the favored rusher in Atlanta.

2. Le’Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers

While Le’Veon Bell missed four games in 2016 due to suspension, he still managed to finish fifth at the position in rushing yards and finished second in targets, receptions and receiving yards as well. His coveted elusiveness combined with his production as a dynamic offensive asset will make Bell one of the most valuable fantasy weapons in 2017. While Bell has yet to show up to practice with the Steelers, fantasy owners should not be concerned as Bell has proven that he can miss time with his team and still produce at an elite level when he is present.

1. David Johnson, Arizona Cardinals

While it’s fair to assume that David Johnson will most likely be unable to replicate his 20 total touchdowns scored number from last year, the immensely productive running back will certainly come close to being that dominant when it comes to finding the end zone. His 2,118 total yards more than made up for his pedestrian 4.2 yards per carry statistic, which was in part the result of the garnering 293 rushing attempts. However, what really allowed Johnson to register a top-10 fantasy week during 75% of his outings (position best) was his adeptness as a receiver. His 80 total receptions and 879 receiving yards were far and away the best amongst running backs in 2016 and this same type of production will allow him to be the best running back in fantasy football in 2017.

Alberta Padilla, a 52-year0old teacher at Johnson High School in San Antonio, has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with one of her students.

Padilla, 52, reportedly told police she had romantic feelings for the unidentified boy, now a sophomore, when she began tutoring him in June of 2016.

According to the arrest warrant, Padilla told investigators they eventually began having a sexual relationship which continued for more than a year. The affidavit also stated that Padilla bought clothing, food and a cell phone for the boy and often allowed him to stay at her home.

The affidavit does say that investigators questioned Padilla’s underage daughter who told them she suspected something was going on and mentioned it to another relative.

It says the girl, at one point, recorded a phone conversation the boy had with her relative.

She told police she overheard him expressing that he had also had feelings for Padilla and trying to convince the relative not to report it authorities.

Padilla was arrested on Thursday, August 31, on a charge of improper relationship between an educator and student.

Long before the epic McGregor-Mayweather fight went down, I argued that McGregor had already won, regardless of what happened in the ring.

Last Saturday, McGregor essentially willingly took a knife into a gun fight as an MMA fighter in a boxing match — but it didn’t matter.

Even though he lost, he was lauded for his balls, skill, heart, and will. Besides, he was expected to lose to Floyd Mayweather, one of the greatest boxers of all time. So regardless of the outcome of the fight, McGregor still walked away with a fatter wallet, further adoration and respect, and endless options. That sounds like a winner to me.

Conor seems to realize that, too, as his first post-fight statement reads as it was written by a man who is totally content with the outcome and his options (I would be too if I just tripled my net worth).

I had an amazing team and It truly was an amazing and enjoyable camp, and honestly I feel with just a little change in certain areas of the prep, we could have built the engine for 12 full rounds under stress, and got the better result on the night.

Getting to 12 rounds alone in practice was always the challenge in this camp. We started slowly getting to the 12 and decreasing the stress in the rounds the closer it got to 12. I think for the time we had, 10 weeks in camp, it had to be done this way. If I began with a loaded 12 rounds under much stress I would have only hit a brick wall and lost progress as a result and potentially not made the fight. A little more time and we could have made the 12 cleanly, while under more stress, and made it thru the later rounds in the actual fight. I feel every decision we made at each given time was the correct decision, and I am proud of everyone of my team for what we done in the short time that we done it.

30 minutes was the longest I have fought in a ring or cage or anywhere. Surpassing my previous time of 25 minutes. I am happy for the experience and happy to take all these great lessons with me and implement them into my camp going forward.

Another day another lesson!

Congrats to Floyd on a well fought match. Very experienced and methodical in his work. I wish him well in retirement. He is a heck of a boxer. His experience, his patience and his endurance won him this fight hands down. I always told him he was not a fighter but a boxer. But sharing the ring with him he is certainly a solid fighter. Strong in the clinch. Great understanding of frames and head position. He has some very strong tools he could bring into an MMA game for sure.

On September 2, Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve will look to resume his winning ways against Alexander Volkov despite not competing in a UFC fight since last October. Both fighters are currently on multiple fight win streaks and are in their late 20s.

Struve, at one point, looked to be a serious contender in the UFC Heavyweight contender back in 2012. In September of 2012, Struve defeated current Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and looked poised to become a future champion. However, Struve’s title hopes suffered a setback courtesy of knockout specialist Mark Hunt who knocked Struve out in spectacular fashion on March 3, 2013. Struve was forced to miss over a year due to a broken jaw and then lost to Heavyweight title contender Alistair Overeem via first round knockout before defeating Nogueira in 2015. After losing to Jared Rosholt via decision later that year, Struve let the UFC know that he was back when he defeated Antonio Silva via knockout just 16 seconds into the fight. Struve now returns to his homeland, the Netherlands, where he hopes to defeat Volkov and resurrect his title hopes. Struve currently has an MMA record of 28-8 and will look improve it if he has any hope of turning that title shot dream into a reality. Standing at seven feet tall, Struve will have to use his reach advantage to keep Volkov at bay. If not, Volkov has the knockout power to end it.

Struve’s opponent for this fight is Alexander Volkov. Volkov is a powerful heavyweight who made his professional MMA debut in Russia back in 2009. Volkov has an MMA record of 28 wins and 6 losses with 18 victories coming via knockout. However, unlike previous fights, Volkov will be against a much taller opponent. Since Volkov stands at six feet and seven inches tall, he is used to having a reach advantage and is not used to fighting against taller fighters. It will definitely be interested to see how Volkov handles the massive frame and reach advantage that Struve possesses. However, according to Vegas, Volkov is the slight favorite so it appears that Vegas has faith in Volkov to overcome Struve’s height.

In my opinion, I think this fight is a coin flip. Volkov has a tremendous amount of power and can easily knock Struve out similarly to the way Mark Hunt did. However, Struve is still five inches taller and has won 17 of his fights via submission. If Struve gets the fight to the ground, then he should win the fight. However, if Volkov can keep the fight in the standup, he should be able to knockout Struve. It will truly be a conflict of fighting styles and I am gonna side with Struve on this one. I think that Struve will use his height and frame to force Volkov to the mat where he will win via submission in his home country.

A Salt Lake City detective really wanted to get a blood sample of a blood sample of an unconscious patient he was investigating, but the nurse at the hospital refused. She said that it went against the hospital’s policy to not draw blood from a patient without their consent unless their is a warrant for that patients arrest or if that person was already arrested. The patient didn’t fit into either category and the nurse insisted to the officer that she is unable to comply to his demands. As a result, he put her under arrest, as she screamed all the way out of the building.

Officer Jeff Payne finds himself in a heap of trouble over this recent arrest of a Utah nurse. The Salt Lake City police department has put Payne on paid leave. Meanwhile nurse Alex Wubbels says she was “assaulted and illegally arrested” by Officer Payne.

However, according to Payne’s report, he was instructed by his superior officer Lt. James Tracy that if the nurse doesn’t comply with the order to draw blood then she would be arrested for interfering with an investigation.

Payne claimed he wanted to get that sample to “protect” the patient rather than punish him. Payne also wanted to see if the patient had any illicit substances in his system at the time of the crash, and was allegedly responding to a request from Logan police to solicit a sample of the patients blood. The unconscious patient had been injured since a July 26 car crash in Northern Utah, which killed the other driver.

Wubbels is frantic as she is dragged out of the hospital by Payne. She yells out, “Help! Help! Somebody help me! Stop! Stop! I did nothing wrong!”

Federal law backs up this nurse and the unconscious patient. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that the Constitution does allow warrantless breath tests in drunken-driving arrests, however it does not warrantless blood tests.

“I can’t sit on this video and not attempt to speak out both to re-educate and inform,” said Nurse Wubbels. Police agencies “need to be having conversations about what is appropriate intervention.”

Wubbels has not been charged of any crime. She says that she has already watched the video of her arrest four to five times, and “it’s hard to relive it.”

Even the mayor of Salt Lake City is backing up this nurse. Mayor Jackie Biskupski released a statement on the incident that now has gone viral. The mayor said, “Like many of you, I watched the video of police officers interacting with University of Utah Medical Center nurse Alex Wubbles for the first time through the media late yesterday. What I saw is completely unacceptable to the values of my Administration and of the values of the Salt Lake City Police Department. I extend a personal apology to Ms. Wubbles for what she has been through for simply doing her job.”

As a result of the hospital incident on July 26, Officer Payne has been suspended with pay from the department’s blood draw program. He has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

A North Carolina man decided to take a dip in the ocean on Wednesday in an attempt to elude police. Surf City cops spotted illicit drugs and paraphernalia in this guy’s car and he went a swimming as a way to lose the fuzz.

Police didn’t jump into the water after their suspect because they were able to send out a drone to follow the man on his ocean-bound journey. But then…a police chase turns into a rescue mission when they spot a big ‘ole shark is stalking the man like prey.

Somewhere out in the (North Carolina) Atlantic, a large shark swam alongside 20-year-old Zachary Kingsbury who attempted to flee police, but found an even greater predator on his tail. Alright, w

This guy Kingsbury may have an awful few criminal charges to deal with, but the kid is a total beast at swimming. He led that drone on for an hour, unaware of the shark following close behind. All and all, he’s charged with resisting arrest, obstructing an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine, and possession of marijuana of up to a half an ounce. However, this dude did what Michael Phelps said he’d do and that is race a shark…a REAL F’N shark!

Police started to get really worried “After 60 minutes of flight time, Kingsbury was over 4,000 feet offshore and visual contact was lost. At that point, the operation became a rescue operation,” according to a statement from Surf City Police.

But as police were trying to save Kingsbury, they noticed a shark swimming near the man, drone footage showed.
Police were able to nab Kingsbury about 7:45 p.m., according to the Charlotte Observer.
“I would’ve drowned after 10 minutes…dude’s an animal,” a witness wrote in a Facebook post.
Kingsbury was charged with resisting arrest, obstructing an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine, and possession of marijuana of up to a half an ounce. via Fox News

No need to cast undue blame on that shark. The creature had an enormous amount of restraint for not taking a nibble out of that wayward human. Maybe the shark just wanted a friend…

In the first week of college football, there is only one game between top ten, even top five, opponents. That game is between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Florida State Seminoles. Both teams come into the season with the hopes of lifting another national championship. Alabama has not won a championship since two seasons ago while Florida State has not won since 2013. Both teams hope to end that brief title drought and a win over a top five opponent would basically lock either team into the college football playoff.

Alabama, led by coach Nick Saban, will attempt to rally from its crushing 35-31 loss to Clemson in the national title game last season. Alabama kept the majority of its offensive talent and will be led by sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts and junior running back Bo Scarbrough. Hurts is a dual threat quarterback who has the ability to elongate plays with his legs as well as pick up key first downs through scrambling. The issue with Hurts is his throwing accuracy which led to his awful performance in the title game. In that game, Hurts only completed 13 passes out of 31 attempts and was dared by the Clemson defense to beat them with his arm which he failed to do. Scarbrough, on the other hand, looked phenomenal in the title game and ran for 93 yards with two touchdowns before leaving with an injury in the second half. Scarbrough, when healthy, is a serious Heisman trophy contender. He has the NFL prototypical combo of size and speed and he should be a force this season as he hopes to carry his team to another title.

On defense, Alabama did lose some key pieces including star linebacker Reuben Foster and star defensive lineman Jonathan Allen. However, it is Alabama so Saban has already prepared for these losses through great secondary and defensive line depth as well as elite recruiting. Returning for Alabama is star defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick will most likely be a top ten pick in the upcoming NFL draft and will use his elite size and range to generate tons of turnovers. Overall, this team probably has the most talent on any current college roster and is the favorite to win the national title as a result.

Alabama’s opponent, Florida State, is definitely capable of pulling off this upset. Florida State finished 10-3 last season including a victory over Michigan in the Capital One Orange Bowl. Leading the Seminoles will be second-year quarterback Deondre Francois who threw for over 3300 yards and 20 touchdowns in his freshman season. Francois has the talent to be an elite college quarterback moving forward. The only issue concerning him was the amount of sacks taken. Francois was sacked a lot last season due to an inconsistent offensive line as well as a tendency for him to hold the ball for too long. With Alabama’s elite defensive line, Francois needs to get rid of the ball quicker. If not, it could be a long day for the Seminoles.

Florida State is also dealing with a key loss on offense as star running back Dalvin Cook is gone. Replacing Cook will most likely be newcomer Cam Akers. Despite being a true freshman, Akers was the number one ranked high school running back in the country and will probably be a phenomenal running back in college. I expect Akers to take the NCAA by storm and to use his size and speed to leave tacklers in the dust.

On defense, remember the name Derwin James. Last season, he was regarded as the Seminoles’ best defensive player before suffering a serious knee injury in week two that ended his season. James might be the best all-around safety I have seen since Sean Taylor. He has the ball-hawking skills of a young Ed Reed and the hit power of a Kam Chancellor. If he stays healthy, he will be a top five pick in the draft and will be a future All-Pro in the NFL. Mark my words.

As for a prediction, I have to side with Alabama. Nick Saban has always scheduled difficult opponents in week one of the season and his team continues to destroy them. In the last two seasons, Alabama started off the season by defeating a ranked Wisconsin team handily and then destroying a ranked USC team the following year. Alabama has the experience and the talent to go undefeated again and I expect them to wear down Florida State in the second half. I still like this Seminoles team and expect them to make the college football playoffs but Alabama has not lost consecutive games since 2013. I think Alabama wins a very close game due to Scarbrough and their defensive line.

The marquee college football game on Saturday afternoon is a contest between the 17th ranked Florida Gators and the 11th ranked Michigan Wolverines. The Gators will attempt to build off of last season as the Gators went 9-4 including a victory over Iowa in the Outback Bowl. Florida is still a long ways away from being a title contender, but the program is definitely headed in the right direction. Michigan, led by coach Jim Harbaugh, will look to build on last season as the Wolverines went 10-3 last season. However, the season ended with a brutal 33-32 loss to Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Both of these teams have a very slim chance to make the college football playoffs but a win against a top 20 team will definitely help.

Florida, led by coach Jim McElwainn, has the ability to put their program back on the map and a victory over Michigan is a good place to start. However, that victory looks less likely as the program had to suspend several players indefinitely including star running back Jordan Scarlett. With Scarlett out, one has to wonder if Florida will still be able to put up enough points to defeat Michigan. To add to the confusion, Florida is going to start freshman Feleipe Franks at quarterback but it is still likely that other quarterbacks like Malik Zaire will see some snaps. However, Florida’s team will succeed this season due to its defense. Florida has a very solid defensive line which can dominate the line of scrimmage and make life difficult for the Michigan offense.

Michigan, led by senior quarterback Wilton Speight, have their work cut out for them in they want to make a title run. Specifically, Michigan’s defense is a huge question mark. Michigan only has one returning starter from a season ago on defense and could be using up to six freshman in the starting lineup. However, Harbaugh is known for being an elite recruiter and one can expect those freshman to play a lot better than most people anticipate. Out of all the losses on defense, the biggest loss has to be safety jabril Peppers. Peppers played a variety of positions, on offense and defense, last season and was a head of that defensive unit. With him gone, one of the new faces will have to step up and make several game changing plays.

As for a prediction, I am going to side with the Wolverines. Both these teams have serious issues which makes this specific game extremely tough to predict. However, when in doubt, go with the better coach. No offense to Jim McElwainn, but Jim Harbaugh is clearly the better football coach. Harbaugh is an expert at getting his players to overachieve and to play consistently well. For that reason, I will take Michigan winning this game by about a touchdown or so in what should be a low scoring game.

It’s Labor Day (Monday, September 4th) and that means two things: a long weekend and the end of summer (real big catch 22 there). Landing on the first Monday of each September, Labor Day is a holiday to celebrate the American labor movement and meant as a tribute to all the accomplishments of the American workforce.
