Every time Yasiel Puig steps out onto the field, his unbridled enthusiasm takes center stage in a game that usually lacks intensely engaging players. While Puig’s antics have made him one of the more polarizing figures in baseball, his energy and sensational athleticism have allowed him to be a mainstay on a Dodgers team that is currently the favorite to make the World Series coming out of the National League. Love him or hate him, it can’t be denied that Puig’s confident presence is uniquely refreshing, which has slowly become respected by Dodgers and baseball fans in general. 2013-2015

Two months into the 2013 season, Puig was called up by the Dodgers due to his impressive capabilities in the outfield. While Puig showcased his immense arm strength in his first major league game, it was his bat that got him the most immediate recognition as he became the first Dodger to have a multi-homer game in one of his first two appearances. 15 games into the season, Puig already had 27 hits, which tied him with Joe DiMaggio (1936) and Terry Pendleton (1984) for second-most all-time. By the end of the year, Puig had posted impressive hitting numbers across the board, the most notably of which were a .319 batting average and a .534 slugging percentage.

Coming into his second year in the majors, Puig was already a prominent part of the Dodgers roster and continued his excellence at the plate in 2014. By mid-May, Puig had completed his eighth consecutive game hitting at least one extra-base hit and at least one RBI, the longest streak by a Dodger. Puig’s prolific success on offense earned him his first (and thus far only) All-Star selection and he was also selected to participate in the Home Run Derby. By the end of the season, Puig had once again put up spectacular numbers at the plate as he set career highs in RBI’s (69) and hits (165).

While Puig wanted to continue his dominance in 2015, he experienced left hamstring issues throughout the season, which inhibited him from emulating his glowing successes from his first two years in the majors. Still, Puig was a threat at the plate, particularly as a power hitter as he put up 11 home runs and 38 RBI’s in 79 games.

He reportedly earned $4.5 million in 2015.

2016-Present

Still feeling the lingering affects of his hamstring injury from the previous year, Puig’s production at the plate became anemic. On August 2, Puig was sent down to the minors and was even told by the Dodgers that he would most likely be traded or demoted. However, Puig rejoined the team in September and was able to knock in 45 RBI’s despite his sporadic playing time in the majors.

This year, Puig has looked every bit like the tenacious power hitter that he was during his first two years in the league. He has slugged 19 home runs on the season (tied for a career high) while knocking in 52 RBI’s. While his batting average has not been impressive by his standards (.255), his all-around production as an offensive threat has been essential to the Dodgers success this year.

Going on just his fifth year in the majors, Puig has already made a tremendous impact on the sport with his rowdy personality and tenacious contributions on both offense and defense. While some may frown upon Puig’s outbursts, it can’t be denied that the young outfielder has attracted the attention and wonder of younger sports fans that baseball is sorely lacking. If Puig can continue to be a consistent contributor for the Dodgers, his unique and at times aggravating exuberance may be a blessing in disguise for a sport that already has enough reserved and stoic athletes.

Sam Shepard, a veteran American playwright, actor, author, screenwriter, and director, has passed away at the age of 73 years old. His cause of death is unknown at this time.

Shepard, who had been battling ALS for some time, died on July 30 at his home in Kentucky.

The author of forty-four plays as well as several books of short stories, essays, and memoirs, Shepard received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for his play Buried Child.  In acting, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of pilot Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff in 1983.

Chris Boneau, a spokesman for Shepard’s family, said that the family “requests privacy at this difficult time.”

Shepard received the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award as a master American dramatist in 2009. New York described him as “the greatest American playwright of his generation.”

He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1986.

Shepard, whose plays were known for their “bleak, poetic, often surrealist elements, black humor and rootless characters living on the outskirts of American society”, had been described as “the greatest American playwright of his generation.”

Shepard, who was together with Academy Award-winning actress Jessica Lange for nearly 30 years, is survived by his three children.

Shepard’s final play was A Particle of Dread (Oedipus Variations).

Being born in the early ’90s, I’ve lived through quite a lot in my quarter of a century on this earth.

I’ve seen the rise of the internet and the fall of the Twin Towers. I’ve seen smartphones take over the world and both the first African-American and Orange-American presidents. We’ve seen the birth of social networking giants such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as the death of massive media platforms such MySpace, and sooner or later, Twitter. Point is, over the past decade, technology has been revolutionized in ways we’ve never seen, and these advancements have impacted all aspects of life, including dating.

This is why, in today’s society, being catfished is nowhere near as taboo as it used to be, and because of that, it’s nowhere near as embarrassing as it used to be.

Here are just a couple of reasons why being catfished isn’t as embarrassing as it used to be.

Smartphones Have Flipped Dating On Its Head

Just like everything else in 2017, the point I’m trying to make can be summarized with a meme:

That same inversion of social norms can be applied to online dating.

10, 20 years ago, online dating was seen as a last resort for the hopeless romantic. Now, in 2017, thanks to the invention of mobile dating apps like Tinder and Bumble, it’s the status quo.

In fact, the shift in dating culture has been so drastic that millennials are 75% more likely than baby boomers to have dated someone online and 57% more likely than those of other generations to have created a profile on a dating app.

In today’s society, not only is it more common than ever to date online, but it’s easier than ever to create a fake profile. So, just by way of sheer statistics, that means more people are being catfished, too.

It’s A Lot More Common Than You Think

Here’s where math comes into the equation.

According to Next Shark, in the last decade alone, the percentage of people who know someone that has dated online has risen from 11% to 42%. That’s a 73% increase, and yes, I Googled how to figure out that number all by myself.

With the number of people dating online increasing, so does the number of people getting catfished.

I’m not sure if you’ve looked outside recently, but it’s pretty hectic out there. North Korea is determined to blow themselves up and the student debt bubble is about to burst. Temperatures and water levels are rising while the value of the dollar is falling.

Point being, people have enough to worry about in their own lives, let alone the lives of others.

A couple of months ago, a buddy of mine — who crushes, mind you– was all giddy about some girl he met on Tinder. There was only one strange problem: she asked him for pictures of his feet.

He asked us what he should do, so we checked out her pictures to see what he was working with. It turned out she was a 10, so we told him to play into her apparent foot fetish. What’s the harm, right? Except, my friends and I weren’t being totally honest to our boy because when he looked at the pictures of the alleged Tinder match, we recognized the girl immediately — it was Instagram model Rachel Bush.

But instead of chastising or criticizing our boy for playing into a catfish, we had a little fun with him. And you know why? Knowing that it could have happened to any one of us meant that none of us could care less.

I think it’s the general consensus of every living person ever that late 90’s through early 2000’s WWF, known as the Attitude Era, may be the peak of human pop culture.

Chris Christie is in the news again, but not for any of his political moves. He got into an argument at a baseball game over the weekend, and the internet is not letting him hear the end of it. Between his baseball game confrontation, his private beach experience and his audition for talk radio, Christie is not having the best summer.

Come to think of it, Christie has not had the best last couple years. His presidential bid ending prematurely and his support for Donald Trump went unrewarded. His “bridgegate” scandal severely hurt his statewide popularity and undoubtedly hurt his run for president.  All in all, Christie is one of the most well-known governors in the country, but is also one of the most disliked. Recent polls have his approval ratings at historic lows.

Still, Christie is in office until January 2018, and should stay in the headlines until then. It would be nice if the headlines were about some of his accomplishments in office instead of fights while holding nachos. Late 1980s-2002- Career as a Lawyer

Christie graduated from Seton Hall Law School in 1987, and began work at a law firm and becomes a partner in 1993. He worked on various Republican campaigns in the 1990s including George H.W. Bush’s re-election campaign in 1992. He became director of the Morris Country Freeholders Board in 1997. Christie was closely involved with fundraising for George W. Bush’s campaign in 2000.

Once Bush was elected, he saw potential in Christie, and nominated him for the position of US attorney for the state of New Jersey. His position would serve as the platform for his future political involvement.

2002-2008- First Political Positions

As state attorney, Christie targeted corrupt public officials and went after mostly white-collar criminals. He earned a reputation for cracking down on corruption and convicted people from both parties. Initially, Christie’s credentials were questioned as he was placed in such an important role without much experience. Still, Christie was able to impress and served until 2008 as state attorney. His bid for governor began then.

2008-Present- Governor and Presidential Runs

Christie won the election for governor in 2009, and has been serving in the position since his inauguration in 2010. Christie was seen as a moderate Republican in a mostly Democratic state, and his competitor in the 2009 election had been dogged by allegations of corruption. Christie was popular in his first years in office, and even hinted at a 2012 run for president. He was a big part of the state’s recovery from Hurricane Sandy, and the support from that event led to his reelection in 2013.  He was at the height of his popularity.

In the last few years, Christie’s popularity has plummeted. He has been at the head of a number of scandals, and has seen his runs for president come up short. His approval ratings continue to fall and the controversy continues to mount. It is starting to look like the private sector may be a better destination for New Jersey’s embattled governor.

According to the The Irish Times, the shamrock nation has seen a rise in the “pull out method” during sex, especially among the young lads and lasses. The IFPA has uncovered a huge sexual demographic, stating that a third of adults rely on the “withdrawal method” to prevent pregnancies. These lads rely on “pulling out” before the load is shot. And according to the survey, the highest number of people “pulling out” were between the ages of 18 and 34, while the lowest rates were among adults over 55 years old.

Meanwhile, 38 percent of sexually-active Irish adults (ages 18 and up) don’t use any form of contraception whatsoever. And 70 percent of those surveyed claimed to be in committed relationships.

This staggering number of Irish people “pulling out” has caused serious consequences. As a result of this less than responsible act, unplanned and crisis pregnancies have been on the rise. These specific pregnancies offer a personal crisis for the female and (potentially) the male in the relationship, as they are both unplanned and undesired. In Ireland, 16 percent of adults ages 18-34 have experienced crisis pregnancies.

In the survey, a quarter of all sexually-active adults in a relationship report using condoms as their primary contraceptive method. Almost 40 percent of Irish citizens aged 18-34 rely upon condoms to prevent pregnancies. Meanwhile, 20 percent of women in a relationship rely upon an oral contraceptive pill.

If a pregnancy would be a crisis for a woman or couple, then it makes sense to use a contraceptive method they can rely on…This is really concerning and shows that there is a need for more education and knowledge so that women are empowered to make the choice of contraceptive thats best for them.

Dr. Henchion reports that one in 10 couples rely upon the “pull out” unreliable contraceptive method in attempt to prevent pregnancies.

Young women aren’t the only ones experiencing unwanted or crisis pregnancies. Chief executive of the association,Niall Behan, said the narrative that unintended pregnancy only happens to young women is simply inaccurate as a number of women over 35 are seeking and attending pregnancy counseling services.

Georgia police are searching for two suspects after an off-duty Georgia State University police officer was shot on Sunday, July 30, around 9:30 PM in southwest Atlanta. The shooting happened during an attempted robbery in the 1400 block of Donnelly Avenue.

According to reports, LaToya Denise Crook, a 31-year-old Georgia State University police officer, was walking down the sidewalk with a friend in downtown Atlanta on Sunday night when they were approached by two men. Crook told police that the two men, one of which was on a bike, approached them and attempted to rob them at gunpoint.

Crook and one of the suspects got into an altercation, which led to Crook being  shot. Police say the officer then pulled out her own firearm and returned fire, prompting the suspects to flee.

Georgia State University released a statement about the shooting:

Georgia State University police officer LaToya Denise Crook, 31, was approached last night in Atlanta at 1460 Donnelly Avenue SW by two males in an apparent armed robbery attempt. Officer Crook was off-duty, walking back to her home when shots were exchanged between the robbery suspect and Officer Crook. Officer Crook was hit twice. She was taken to Grady Hospital and admitted with non-life-threatening injuries. She is in good spirits and Georgia State police officers, friends and family remain by her side.

The Atlanta Police Department (APD) is investigating the attempted armed robbery under APD case number 172112180. Georgia State’s police department is working with the APD as it tries to identify suspects in this case. We thank the APD, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department and Grady Hospital for their professional response to this incident. Because this is an Atlanta Police response and investigation, questions about the incident details, suspects or criminal investigation should be referred to the APD’s Public Affairs Office.

Officer Crook has been employed by the Georgia State Police Department since January 2017. She came to the department from the Georgia World Congress Center Police Department where she served from November 2013 until joining Georgia State. She is an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

We continue to pray for a speedy recovery.

Crook, who was shot twice (once in the hand and once in the side), was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition.

The bicycle left at the scene is being used as evidence, however, police haven’t released a description of the suspects at this time.

The United States has not hosted an Olympics since 2002, but the next one is on the schedule. Los Angeles will be the host for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, according to various reports. This will be the cities third time hosting the games as the Olympics were held in Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984.

The report of the Los Angeles games comes with the new that Paris will be the host of the Summer games in 2024. The two cities were competing hard to host in 2024, but both will end up hosting the games. Paris hosted the summer games back in 1924, and will be celebrating an anniversary.

While the competition between Paris and Los Angeles was fierce for the 2024 bid, there was a noticeable absence of other cities and countries in contention. Hosting the Olympics is not cheap and puts a great deal of stress on the infrastructure of a city. Unless they can afford to make changes or the proper systems are already in place, hosting the Olympics can be more trouble than they are worth.

The official announcement of the bids is expected later today, and LA Mayor Eric Garcetti is expected to hold a press conference to formally announce the bid. It will be interesting to follow reaction once the official announcement is made. The 2018 winter Olympics will take place in Pyeongchang in Korea, and the 2020 Olympics will return to Tokyo for the first time since 1964.

Who likes to party? Even the most party-prudish people among us have to cut loose and let out their wild side every once and while. College is a time of self-transformation; as you meet new people, learn new and sometimes annoying ideas, get super-stressed over tests, study hard and party possibly even harder. Some people leave college as a completely different person, for better or for worst.

The Princeton Review’s annual “Best Colleges” book surveyed tons of students (140,000) to be exact. The review asked the participants to rank 20 colleges within 62 different categories. And the party school list is one of the most popular and sought after features in the entire book.

“We know applicants need far more than an academic rating or ranking to find the college that will be best for them,” Robert Franek, Princeton Review’s editor-in-chief and the book’s lead author, said in a press release. “We created our 62 ranking lists to help narrow that search. They are based entirely on data we gather beyond academics that gives insight into what the school’s enrolled students say about their professors, administrators, school services, campus culture, and student life. In the end, it’s all about the fit.”

The ranking system is based off 80 questions, asking participants to chose between five choices when it relates to campus life, ranging from “awful to excellent.” This study is based upon opinions rather than empirical evidence.

Last year, the University of Wisconsin-Madison nabbed the top spot for party schools. Let’s see how they do this year. Without further ado, here’s the list of the top 20 party schools across the nation…

Just ten days into his role as White House Communications Director, Anthony Scaramucci, known as ‘The Mooch’, has been fired from his position.

In just over a week as the White House Communications Director, Scaramucci was at the heart of multiple controversies, including, but not limited to, his profanity-laced interview with the New Yorker, his wife filing for divorce, and the firing of Reince Priebus.

According to a statement from the White House, Scaramucci left the position because he felt it was best to give Chief of Staff John Kelly “a clean slate” and the “ability to build his own team.”

Mr. Scaramucci’s abrupt removal came just 10 days after the wealthy New York financier was brought on to the West Wing staff, a move that convulsed an already chaotic White House and led to the departures of Sean Spicer, the former press secretary, and Reince Priebus, the president’s first chief of staff.

The decision to remove Mr. Scaramucci, who had boasted about reporting directly to the president, not the chief of staff, John F. Kelly, came at Mr. Kelly’s request, the people said. Mr. Kelly made clear to members of the White House staff at a meeting Monday morning that he is in charge.

It was not clear whether Mr. Scaramucci will remain employed at the White House in another position or will leave altogether.

Whether or not we believe that explanation is irrelevant (we don’t) — all that matters is Twitter’s glorious reaction to the news that Scaramucci had been fired and “The Mooch was loose.”

So thanks for everything, Mooch. We barely knew ya, but boy did we love ya.

1967-1985

King sold his first professional short story, “The Glass Floor,” to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. After graduating from college, he couldn’t find a teaching position so he decided to sell his short stories to men’s magazines such as Cavalier. In 1973, King’s first novel Carrie was accepted by publishing house Doubleday. King had thrown an early draft of the novel into the trash after becoming discouraged with his progress writing about a teenage girl with psychic powers. His wife retrieved the manuscript and encouraged him to finish it. His advance for Carrie was $2,500; King’s paperback rights later earned $400,000 . After his mother’s death, King and his family moved to Boulder, Colorado, where King wrote The Shining (published 1977). In the late 1970s, King began what became a series of interconnected stories about a lone gunslinger, Roland, who pursues the “Man in Black” in an alternate-reality universe that is a cross between J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth and the American Wild West. The first of these stories, The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger, was initially published in five installments by The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction from 1977 to 1981. The Gunslinger was continued as an eight-book epic series called The Dark Tower, which books King wrote and published infrequently over four decades.

1986-2004

It, published in 1986, had an initial print run of 1,000,000 copies, King’s largest to date. In 1987, King released the second installment, The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three, in which Roland draws three people from 20th-century United States into his world through magical doors. In the early 2000s, King revised the original book, The Gunslinger, because he felt the voice and imagery of the original stories of the late 1970s did not seem to fit the voice of the final installment of 2004; King felt the style of the work had markedly changed during the intervening 27 years. The revised version was published in 2003.

2005-Present

In October 2005, King signed a deal with Marvel Comics to publish a seven-issue limited series spin-off of the series called The Gunslinger Born. The first issue was published on February 7, 2007.

In 2006, King published an apocalyptic novel, Cell. The book features a sudden force in which every cell phone user turns into a mindless killer. King noted in the book’s introduction that he does not use cell phones.

In 2008, King published both a novel, Duma Key, and a collection, Just After Sunset.

In 2009, King published Ur, a novella written exclusively for the launch of the second-generation Amazon Kindle and available only on Amazon.com, and Throttle, a novella co-written with his son Joe Hill and released later as an audiobook titled Road Rage. King’s next novel, 11/22/63, was published November 8, 2011, and was nominated for the 2012 World Fantasy Award Best Novel. The eighth Dark Tower volume, The Wind Through the Keyhole, was published in 2012. King’s next book was Joyland, a novel about “an amusement-park serial killer.” It was followed by the sequel to The Shining (1977), titled Doctor Sleep, published in September 2013.

King announced in June 2014 that Mr. Mercedes is part of a trilogy; the second book, Finders Keepers, was released on June 2, 2015. On April 22, 2015, it was revealed that King is currently working on the third book of the trilogy which name was later revealed to be End of Watch. The book was released on June 7, 2016, and hit the top of the New York Times bestseller list.

On November 3, 2015, King released his tenth collection of short stories, The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. The book was released to critical acclaim and commercial success.

During a tour to promote End of Watch, King revealed that he had collaborated on a novel, set in a women’s prison in West Virginia, with his son, Owen King. The novel with the working title Sleeping Beauties is set to be released in 2017.

A bomb threat in Northwest Washington DC has caused the entrance to Metro’s City station to shut down. The threat was confirmed Monday afternoon.

According to Metro, the entrance to the station has been shut down at the corner of 13th and G Streets in Downtown Washington DC. Meanwhile, other entrance to Metro City remain open while authorities conduct an investigation into the threat.

The threat has only recently reported and the story is developing.

Back in July, a man was accused of making bomb threats a different station in Washington DC. James Cherry allegedly made bomb threats to DC’s Union Station back in July 2016. He also made bomb threats to Metrorail station, and an area near the White House. He apparently made those threats for his own entertainment. However, Cherry’s particular case has not been linked to Monday’s bomb threat at DC’s Metro City station.

The Chicago Cubs won the World Series last season to break a more than century-long drought and bring a championship back to the north side. The years without a championship was hard for Cubs fans as they suffered through devastating losses and were even cursed by an animal. Of all of the tough times over a century, the low point for Cubs fans came in the 2003 NLCS.

The Cubs were playing the Florida Marlins, and looked like they were on their way to winning game six and the series. In the late innings, a Marlins player sent a foul ball down the left field line. What happened next will live on in baseball history.

The fan who reached for the ball was Steve Bartman, and his life was forever changed after this moment. Instead of getting an out on this play, the inning continued, and snowballed into a big inning for the Marlins. The Cubs ended up losing the game and eventually the series. Fans needed a scapegoat, and found one in Bartman. Despite the errors and poor play by the Cubs following the Bartman interference, the fan is the one who got blamed.

Since that time, Steve Bartman has remained hidden from private life. He received death threats and was held responsible for the misfortune of millions of fans. He was finally forgiven following the Cubs championship in 2016, and the Cubs are going even further to make amends. They have decided to give Bartman a World Series Ring.

Bartman graciously accepted the ring, and had a very powerful message to send. He wants people to understand how poorly he was treated following this incident, and he hopes nobody else will ever have to endure the hatred that he felt. Whether you think this ring was deserved or not, we can all agree that Bartman did not deserve to be the scapegoat, and hopefully, he can find a way to move on with his life.
